Week 4 Prediction Game: the Results
If you think about it, the Prediction Games are a lot like that guy who just crossed the English Channel on what was essentially a jetpack. I mean, really, that was pretty darn cool. He flew. Using a jetpack. If you don't think that's cool, then you must be from the future, when they have jetpacks and you're used to it.
The prediction games are a lot like that, because they are also pretty cool. Man, I'm the best at analogies. You know what else I'm the best at? Segues*. Segues that are also analogies. Check it out:
When the year 2000 came around, a lot of people who grew up back when the year 2000 was the distant future and it was popular to think that in the year 2000 we'd have warp drive and jetpacks and stuff thought it was a funny joke to go around saying, "where's my jetpack?" That's a lot like wjackalope. See, when Tuesday came around, a lot of wjackalope who grew up back when the prediction game results were posted on Tuesday mornings and it was popular to think that Tuesday morning would be when the prediction game results would be posted thought it was a funny joke to go around saying, "where's my prediction game results?"
Well, people, there's your jetpack.
Well wjackalopes, here's your prediction game results.**

49ers @ New Orleans
- Ninerfromacrossthepond (6)
- albertoleecho (8)
- wjackalope (14)
It's worth noting that nobody else picked the Saints this week. We're all suckers. Including those of us who aren't.
Philadelphia @ Chicago
- jtoj (8)
- albertoleecho (14)
It's worth noting that, obviously, nobody else picked the Bears this week. Boy, nobody could have predicted that one. Including those of us who did.
Baltimore @ Pittsburgh
- albertoleecho, Josh from Hollywood (6)
- wjackalope, StrictlyFootball (8)
- groug, 408, etb2, Vote4Gore, mojorisin', Netsky (12)
It's worth noting that lots of people picked Pittsburgh to win this game. Or it isn't. I can't really tell anymore....
Green Bay @ Tampa Bay
- 49erLou, bayboy, howtheyscored, Mike Hawk (6)
- Niner Fan Lost in WI (8)
- Ninjames (14)
Arizona @ New York Jets
- proudcanadian99 (36)
- montasmob69 (44)
- 49erLou, marcello, Mike Hawk, Niner Fan Lost in WI (50)
San Diego @ Oakland
- marcello, wjackalope (4)
- jtoj, KingofDucks1987, etb2, Fooch (6)
- 408, Vote4Gore (8)
I think it's worth noting that only one person predicted Oakland in this game. Bet you thought it would have been, like, 2 or 3 less than that, didn't you?
And that makes our week 4 leaderboard look like this:
- wjackalope – 25
- proudcanadian99 – 17

First of all, I'd like to say that we're back to normal. After a couple of noisy weeks in the scoring, we went through an entire week without so much as a dangerously close to perfect prediction. It was starting to seem like getting perfect predictions was becoming like going Super-Saiyan after Goku and Vegeta had kids - suddenly e'rrybody's doing it! Everybody but me, the prediction game equivalent of Kullilan, or groug, who I would characterize more as a Yamcha-type. Man, there I go again with those awesome analogies. I bet some of you don't even know who Goku is.
So this is more like it. You better EARN those 10 points!
Second of all, I'd like to say congratulations to albertoleecho, who had a tremendous week. He moved up from tied for 23rd to being tied for regular 3rd just like that. So, congrats albertoleecho. Nice job there.
Which brings me to my weekly update on myself. Hey, I'm doing alright! I only scored one game this week, but it was a win for 3 points. I haven't started getting the consistent points that I want, but hey... it's better than my crap sucking Fantasy Football teams!
wjackalope had a nice week, but he still didn't really distinguish himself from the second tier. Less than 10 points to second. The third tier is a little further back, but I'm not too worried. Somebody like albertoleecho goes on a tear, and that lead is in serious trouble by the middle of October.
And, you know, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Fooch is playing the silent killer. Every week it seems like he comes up quiet, but every week he's still hanging right around the edge of the top 10. Evil genius? Dumb luck? Some weird combination of the two, like dumb genius or levil duck? I'd say it's definitely one of those four and definitely not something else.
*Apparently, that's how you spell segway.
**Hot damn, I'm good at this.

worth the wait
for two reasons:
1. Howie, you outdid yourself with your intro and analysis. Great great stuff.
2. I did well. Better than I thought. I was getting worried when I picked wrong on 3 of the games, but getting a first, second, and third on the other three made for a nice week. Good to still see my name at the top. But again I don’t want to get cocky or complacent. I know there’s a long way to go and a lot of good competitors out there. I’m still waiting for sfgfan to break out… look out people.
On another note, Howie, I bet you were getting scared when it was 20-13 Pittsburgh late in the 4th quarter. You probably instinctively looked at my prediction, figuring it would be spot on, and got worried that Baltimore’s drive would stall and they’d settle for a field goal and hope to get the ball back. That would have made the score 20-16 and if it held, given me another perfect pick. But lucky for you they got the TD and lucky for me Pitt won it on a field goal, giving me a decent score of 8, good enough for 3rd.

Break out
I wouldn’t be so sure that anything I end up doing in this competition will resemble ‘breaking out’. I’m just looking for a couple of perfects to ride to the finish line again.

hey Howie
just a thought, cause it seems like you’ve got lots of time on your hands. And by that I mean some kind of job where you can sit in front of a computer and not actually work all day. I mean, right? So how about you calculate the mean total score so far and then relate the scores to the normal curve by figuring out the standard deviation of the scores, and give each of us a z score so we can see how we’re really doing. I mean, I’d do it but I have um, you know, work or something. And lack of math skills.

Goose egg.
After a fairly decent week, I come back with a big zero. Consistency, how can I lure you to me?

So I'm thinking of doing a new strategy
Do a sort-of $1 Price-is-Right move on wjackalope. You are killing, man.

that's hilarious
how would that work? Wait until I post my predictions, and then make a bunch of them very close to that one? So that if I’m off by say 8 total points, someone will have 6 and someone 4 and someone 2? That would be mean. I’ll just email my picks to Howie…
