First off, I thought I'd get this opened up now so people can discuss both the 49ers-Cardinals match-up and the morning games.  If the thread gets filled with pre-game commentary I might open up a separate thread for earlier games next week.  For now we'll play it by ear.

More importantly, after months of waiting and months of analysis on everything under the sun, it's finally game day.  The national media continues to consider the 49ers a joke.  Out here there are plenty of questions we've been hoping to get answered.  Will Mike Martz and J.T. O'Sullivan be the answer to what ails the offense?  Will Bamm Bamm continue his rise to greatness?  How long will Mike Nolan last?  Starting today we'll finally begin to get some answers.  Good or bad, answers are answers.

For the lurkers out there who would like to discuss the game, either click on "Sign Up" on the top left side of the front page or follow the directions at the bottom of the comments section of the thread.  Whether you're just cruising through or are a long time reader, everybody is welcome.

Future open threads will include some more last minute analysis, but for this one, let's just enjoy the beginning of another NFL season.

And if you're still trying to find a sports bar, it sounds like some folks will be heading to Aces on Sutter and Hyde.  Hopefully people will keep using the sports bar thread to find places in SF and around the world to watch the 49ers.

GO NINERS!

Finally!

I can’t think of a better team than the Cardinals to start off the JTO era. While they do have some playmakers on defense, we have actually been able to put some points up on the board against these guys the past couple years. I feel like we have a good shot in the game but I don’t how much of that is because of us or the fact that we’re playing AZ.

I guess I’m going to have to watch Favre for the next three hours..

I was going to but with Desean Jackson getting the start at wide receiver I’m going with the Rams and Eagles on Fox, at least initially.

I will definitely be switching between the two once the endless beer commercial parade starts. Hopefully the Eagles can put a whooping on the Rams, which I think they will.

They have looked horrendous offensively and defensively. For all the weapons they have on offense, it just goes to show that nothing can be done with a garbage O-Line.

Jackson

When he was drafted, he was like the a Vernon Davis type of running back, wasn’t he? Ridiculous physical specimen with all kinds of power and speed. That combination for a running back is hard NOT to like.

The NFC West

The Rams are getting pounded by the Eagles. I don’t know what’s going on up in Buffalo but the Seahawks are losing 14-0 in the second quarter. By game time at the Stick the Cards and Niners could be playing for division lead. Make that 14-7.

Any thought to who the Niners will get for their third quarterback?

Make that 21-0, Eagles.

by Bob In Beaverton on Sep 7, 2008 11:24 AM PDT reply actions

well

It depends on the severity of Smith’s injury.

Remember, we’ve got Arnaz Battle and Michael Robinson on the roster – both can serve as emergency QBs. This early in the year, I’m not sure that you want to mess with your 53 man roster.

by shlecko on Sep 7, 2008 11:26 AM PDT up reply actions

If I'm not mistaken

Robinson was the emergency QB a couple of times last season. Of course, I could be wrong.

by sfgfan on Sep 7, 2008 11:31 AM PDT up reply actions

QBs

I’d imagine we’ll figure out sometime this week the extent of Smith’s injury in terms of time out of uniform. Robinson is the emergency QB today and of course they also have Battle. I remember the Patriots used to use punter Tom Tupa as their #3 every single week. At the same time, I’d rather have an actual QB back there. Maybe bring back Kyle Wright since he at least got to check out the playbook for a couple weeks?

by David Fucillo on Sep 7, 2008 11:32 AM PDT up reply actions

A broken bone in the shoulder

Maiocco and Barrows are both saying that it’s a broken bone in the shoulder. It’s probably going to require surgery and pins. I don’t suspect that we’ll see Smith in uniform for the rest of the year, if that’s the case, but I’ll defer to the doctors. If true it means that they’ll have to get someone in for number three. I heard that Wright had a very strong arm.

I think Tupa played a lot of quarterback in college. I seem to remember him playing quarterback for someone. Atlanta? Speaking of Pats’ QBs, Brady went out with an injury. Looked like a knee.

by Bob In Beaverton on Sep 7, 2008 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Andre Woodson

the guy was pretty good in college, a training camp cut of the giants, apparently stunk during camp, but he does have alot of physical talent, and we can sign him off the giants practice squad

wouldnt hurt to see if you can find a diamon in the rough, which would mean we arguably could have three (we got hill out of nowhere, and same with JTO)

by Vote4Gore on Sep 7, 2008 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Woodson

At one point people were projecting him in the first round as one of the first 2 or 3 QBs selected. He put up great numbers all season long and then things quickly went south in the offseason, particularly I believe at the Senior Bowl and in working out. I wouldn’t mind grabbing him. He was signed by the Giants to their practice squad but the 49ers could grab him as long as they keep him on their 53-man (which would obviously happen with Smith’s injury).

Rams' DBs

Either the Ram’s defensive scheme sucks, or their DBs are really bad. Maybe it’s both?

by sfgfan on Sep 7, 2008 12:07 PM PDT reply actions

Most of their slips have been blown coverages – the coaching/playcalling was there, but the secondary haven’t been taking care of their assignments. I’d say most of the blame should fall into the hands of the DBs.

Niners Nation - The premier 49ers blog on the Internet!

by David Fucillo on Sep 7, 2008 12:13 PM PDT reply actions

Surprised

I am as well. If you think about it though, they kind of already have a TBC in Parys Haralson: someone who has potential pass-rush skills and can kind-of-sort-of drop back into coverage. Green, I think, is viewed by the team as probably their best pure pass-rusher, so I guess you can kind of make sense out of it all.

by sfgfan on Sep 7, 2008 12:29 PM PDT reply actions

I think the point of starting Parys over TBC is that he’s actually got better coverage skills. TBC as a pass rusher is more of a strength kind of guy…he hits hard, and has the power to slap away tackles in pass rush situation. He’s just not exceptionally fast or agile.

Haralson can use his quickness to rush the edge, and Green is a cheaper, younger option for a power OLB in rush situations. Shouldn’t be surprising at all to see the Niners keep TBC out of the lineup.

I’m high on the Bills this season. Trent Edwards has enough weapons around him to look ok at times which is all they really need. I’m not saying they’ll dethrone the Patriots, but I think they’ll be challenging for a playoff spot.

3rd and short

I’d say Gore up the middle, but why not line up Vernon Davis out wide and throw a quick screen type pass to him? Let him use his size to peel off cornerbacks.

time out vs. penalty

Joe Nedney would rather have the penalty to show off his leg.

hey TexanNiner

how’s the browns/cowboys game shaping up?

by shlecko on Sep 7, 2008 2:37 PM PDT reply actions

Dallas up 21-7, they’re not having any problems moving the ball.

I’ve seen Braylon Edwards drop a few passes, one would have been a long touchdown.

by TexanNiner on Sep 7, 2008 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Damn

An INT there would have been so huge. Even the sack would’ve been nice….instead they get 2nd and 10.

Strickland has been solid

He broke up a play and that was a big stop…prefer he try and wrap the guy up, but a stop is a stop.

thats two good plays i’ve seen today, maybe hes coming around

by Vote4Gore on Sep 7, 2008 2:39 PM PDT reply actions

Our defense looks solid

Can we get it into FG range? Or is Nolan going to kneel to keep JT from throwing another pick?

smart play

Rossum smart to give them a chance for a deep pass, even if it was returnable

"JT O'Sullivan, in his first NFL start, has had a solid first half"

Um, no he hasn’t. 10 for 14 looks good, except those were all screens or swings, which anyone can throw. He can’t protect the football, causing two turnovers.

Who the hell made you guys announcers?

by Rishi on Sep 7, 2008 2:46 PM PDT reply actions

performance

He did have a couple good passes to Bryant Johnson and another couple to Vernon Davis. Not spectacular, but encouraging.

(reluctant) yeah...

he threw a couple over 15 yards that didn’t look too bad…even if he did stare down his receivers

by shlecko on Sep 7, 2008 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I suppose, but I wouldn’t characterize it as solid.

The game is tied right now because of the ineptitude of Arizona’s offense, the strength of the Niners’ defense, and Frank Gore. JTO is not the reason why.

by Rishi on Sep 7, 2008 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

except those were all screens or swings, which anyone can throw.

I don’t recall them going all that well last year.

Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com. It's not being updated right now. Hope for more at your own risk.

by groug on Sep 7, 2008 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

We had a different oc last year. Smith attempted a lot more medium and deep passes.

Hell, look at the Chicago preseason game that gave JTO the starting job. Compare the passes JTO threw vs the passes Smith threw. Don’t tell me these aren’t different kinds of passes.

by Rishi on Sep 7, 2008 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Dude, give it up

Smith has consistently sucked for 3 years. He would have overthrown at least one or two of those “gimme” screen or swing passes. He played himself out of the starting position. JT looked okay…not great, but okay.

Young to Rice. Touchdown.

by Call It The Throw on Sep 7, 2008 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions

And I still think Smith has been given a raw deal. And Hill hasn’t even been given a fair chance.

Regardless, I want JTO to succeed. He’s still the starting QB for the Niners and I want the Niners to do well. I’m just not seeing our franchise QB in JTO.

by Rishi on Sep 7, 2008 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd say he was okay

One bad interception, the fumble wasn’t entirely on him (though he should have been a bit more aware). He had a couple nice passes.

Like I’ve been saying, keep handing it to Gore.

Young to Rice. Touchdown.

alltogether, a solid first half

considering the miserable start we had, going into the final half even is about as good as one can reasonably expect

by shlecko on Sep 7, 2008 2:46 PM PDT reply actions

Go Giants

The baby Giants put up as many runs in the 5th inning as the niners scored all half!

Considering his first start

O’Sullivan put up 140 yards. That was a full game’s passing offense last year. Cut out the mistakes and maybe get a turnover or two from them.
