NFL Divisional Round Day 1 Open Thread
That first weekend of games was certainly interesting, but lacked a certain level of luster. Bring in the big dogs and that all changes. I predicted a lot of road upsets last week and it led to a less than stellar showing in the prediction contest. I think my first non-scoring week in some time. We'll see how we can rebound this week. Although, really I'm just looking for entertaining ballgames.
Baltimore Ravens (12-5) at Tennessee Titans (13-3)
1:30 PM PST, CBS
Titans coverage: Music City Miracles
Ravens coverage: Baltimore Beatdown
Joe Flacco and John Harbaugh look to go where rookie coach/QB combos rarely go. The Titans are the #1 seed but they drew the short end of the stick in getting a very tough Ravens team that's playing quite well. Although, in contrasting the conferences, I think there's a significantly greater likelihood that upsets happen in the AFC (so bet the other way).
Arizona Cardinals (10-7) at Carolina Panthers (12-4)
5:15 PM PST, FOX
Panthers coverage: Cat Scratch Reader
Cardinals coverage: Revenge of the Birds
Josh and Danny predicted double digit victories, Danny's a bit more convincing. I would be rather surprised to see the Cardinals win this, or even keep it close. The Panthers dominant running game just seems to much. The only thing that would keep it close is some measure of rust on the Panthers. Although, I tend to think that affects the passing game more than the rushing game.
If you don't get picks in for the early game, you can always pick the late game and tomorrow's games.

Chudzinski interviewed today
Not a surprise, but he officially spoke with Singletary. I’m curious what other names pop up in the coming week.

Dan Dierdork
he says it is unfair to call Flacco a rookie, but all game long, he and Gumball have been calling him a rookie and that the Ravens play conservative because of their rookie QB. just dumb.

he also said the TEN win over BAL earlier this year was...
…a “come from behinder”…that sounds a little too risque for a national TV audience

"Hall held onto the ball"
uh, no he didn’t.
I guess he held onto it long enough, but he did drop it after the collision with Lewis.

why didn't Tenn challenge the delay of game non-call?
you’d think that would be challengeable. They had 3 TOs left?

Unchallengeable
It’s actually not delay when the clock hits zero — it’s delay when the ref sees the clock’s hit zero and blows his whistle. If you get the play off before they they whistle it dead, they give it to you. Strange delineation, I know, but that’s how they’ve always called it.

Well, I wouldn’t call that first one a “good” game, but it sure was fun to watch.

So it's 27 - 7 and the Cardinals are beating the Panthers
Maybe we weren’t that bad, but the Cardinals were just that good. Ya that’s it, we weren’t in a weak division, we were just so good that we took each other out and were too tired to beat down out of division opponents. NFC WEST #1!

DVOA
I’d say Arizona is just slightly out-performing.

Matchups
Don’t underrate the ol’ “They match up well” cliche — Arizona torched Carolina’s secondary in the regular season (granted, with Boldin). That’s why I thought they might be able to have some success and make it a game. I never expected this, though.

Mind-blowing thought
The Cardinals could realistically host the NFC Championship Game.

division title?
Even though Philly has a better record than them, is it because of the division title versus wildcard?

Yup. Same reason San Diego hosted Indy last week.

they're all seeded
so higher seeds get homefield.

Its crazy how poorly Carolina (re:Delhomme) played.
Not that the Cards didn’t play well, but you’d think Carolina would have a better effort than that.
by Brendan Scolari on Jan 11, 2009 12:23 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Carolina made a few mistakes early and got down. They’re a very good running team, but if they have to play catch-up, it forces them to do things they’re not comfortable with, like throw the ball down field a lot, which is riskier anyway. Once they got down, the Cards could rush the passer and play coverage without worrying too much about the run. Carolina had to go for it more often and Delhomme made a bunch of poor throws, which solidified the blowout.
