If you had to choose...
between Steve Young and Joe Montana who would you choose? Sure, Montana has 3 more rings and 2 SB MVP's, but Young also had a ring, and a SB MVP. When i watched them play, they were almost about equal. Young could create when running, or scoring on his own. Montana on the other hand had great pocket presence and had awesome vision. Young also had a great arm, but Montana could zip it in to small spots like it was easy. It's a dilemma, because i have no idea who i'd choose.

Its not even close in my eyes…
Montana WAS the 49ers. Young was amazing, but Super Joe was the team… The way he played in the back to back super bowl run we had was just off the charts…

I liked Young a little more and he was probably even more fun to watch than Montana, but you cant really NOT vote for Joe here.

Not that...
…Steve Young was a choker, but Montana’s late game ability was unreal.

Now for another QB question..
…why don’t more people talk about John Brodie?
by Bitter Fan on Jan 10, 2009 2:11 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
age?
I’m curious what the age spread is of people that read this site. With a younger demographic you’d have a lot of people who don’t talk about a guy like Brodie. Just a thought.

I think the thing with Brodie is that he had a really great end of his career with the playoff runs and the MVP season, and a few intermittent very nice seasons before that… but he also spent a lot of years struggling pretty deeply with with both his talent and injuries. That’s really the knock against him, imo.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

Yeah..
he threw a lot of picks even for the time, which is why he’s not a Hall of Famer.
He reminds me a little bit of Nolan Ryan. He had ridiculous physical skills (see above) but he probably tried for the home run too many times and which picks being much more a part of the game than today he missed a lot. Like how Ryan finally learned to pitch when he got too old to throw 98 on every pitch he had some great years when he got old.
I’d love to see us so some reminiscing during the off-season. I missed a lot of the early year by years but we should put up some players and see what comes up. There’s enough traffic on this site that there’s gotta be someone who saw Hugh McElhenny play.

True...
But I just downloaded the ‘70 NFC Championship game (last ever game at Kezar – I wish the Niners played there) and I saw Brodie play a full game for the first time. Dude had a friggin’ GUN, and he was 35 in a time when 35 year old guys were ancients in sports. He threw a bomb to Gene Washington for a 50 yard completion, and it wasn’t even a real bomb – more of a line drive! He was kind of like a poor man’s Favre.

Montana
Young was a great QB, Montana was the best ever. No question in my mind.

Love Steve, but if the game was on the line in the 4th quarter, you just knew # 16 was going to get it done.

I choose Love.
Shit, wait, wrong question.

Montana... but
It all depends on what kind of team I have to run with the quarterback too.
But if I had to choose one to start my team, Joe gets my nod

Montana was better but
There is no better pass than the 1 that Young threw to Owens against the fudgepackers. I was too young to appreciate Montana so he is more of a mythological hero to me, so Young was my guy.

I’m in the same boat.
But I also think it’s worth noting that Joe played very much to his generation of football. Could he have dominated a defense with Ed Reed or Troy Polomalu hawking the defensive backfield? I’m not so sure. However, I think Steve was a guy that had the skillset and the head that he could have succeeded in any year, at any point in the league.
What I mean is… Babe Ruth was without question the greatest baseball player of his day – but I’m pretty sure he’d be meh-to-poor in today’s MLB. Griffey in his prime, however, would have been a force in any age of baseball.
So if your theoretical refers to today’s game, then I’d take Young over Montana, just like I’d take Griffey Jr over the Babe – as sacreligious as that may sound.

Sometimes I can't tell...
… if you’re being serious or snarky/joking.
I’d go with Young, too. If you’re serious, I’m just curious why you’d go with him over Montana.

I'm very much serious
I feel Young was a better QB, who, under the same circumstances, would have accomplished just as much, if not more, as “Joe Cool”.

He did have a better arm and legs than Joe

I happen to also...
… think he had JUST as good a head on his shoulders as Montana did.

Better looking. Montana is kinda funny looking.

We will never know..
Steve Young had another superbowl in him if it wasn’t for a shortened career. Statistically, I favor Young over Montana. But the 49ers are “The House that Joe built.”
