Should the Niners sign Ray Lewis?
Watching the game and thought of something which I thought I would throw out there. Should the niners sign Ray Lewis? Could be another great mentor for Pat Willis and would help contribute to the overall mentality of the niners D. Plus we all know Coach Sing would love him. I know we need offense badly but what are all of your thoughts on this? He becomes a free agent this year and continues to dominate on the defensive side of the ball.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Ted, Willis, etc...
I realize Lewis is insanely talented, but given the existence of Patrick Willis, I’m not sure it’s a smart use of resources. I’d rather resign Spikes at a significantly lower salary than what Lewis will demand and then use the bigger salary on Terrell Suggs, or in some other way. Just seems like there are smarter ways to send your cap space.

yeah what Fooch said
not that I wouldn t love to have Lewis, but realistically we have much bigger holes to fill this offseason.
Simply by pulling on both ends, Patrick Willis can stretch diamonds back into coal

Yes but no
You can’t really go wrong adding a Hall of Famer to your team, but there’s other more pressing needs.

It happens more than you think. Frankly, it’s a dumb idea to add Lewis (who’s going to be looking to get paid) when you’ve got a better (at least comperable), cheaper, younger option already on the team. It would be a horrible waste of resources.

True. But you can't go wrong adding a murderer to your team

Ravens LB's
Im pretty sure every LB on that team other than Johnson is a free agent… i would love to have suggs or bart scott, who was called the psychotic Leader of the team. They are both great players with great mentalities on winning.
As far as them resigning i dont think they would want to. One of them will get lured away and then the whole scheme is shot…. especailly if lewis is the one to go. That team finally has a QB but i dont see their D staying intact… at leat with the current players. So sign either one in my opinion, doesnt matter to me which one it is.

people said the same thing when Adalius left………..and when Ed Hartwell left………… My guess is theyll keep Ed Reed and one of Scott or Suggs, Johnson will emerge as a playmaker and theyll be just fine.

ravens
i dont ever doubt defenses like the ravens…. they could keep it together but i never see the backups get many plays and there is a great chance those LB’s leave for money. Maybe they wont depending how long this ravens train goes but i doubt it. I think it is doubtful suggs resigns after the franchise tag was placed on him.
If we would sign suggs he would obviously never leave the field….. who would win the other OLB spot?…. i personally am not sure…. Lawson had a pretty good year as a pass rusher… i always thoguht parys was the better pass rusher but Lawson surprised me this year….. he’s better in coverage too probably but i just like Parys …. tully would be done ….. and roderick green also had some big plays for us when he was on the field….,.. Jay Moore probably wouldnt ever be given a chance… i have no idea how the organization feels about him anyway….. So Parys or Manny? Probably a Platoon.

It would be Manny as long as he’s healthy because he’s far better in coverage and Suggs would basically be the designated pass rusher. Haralson or Green in pass rush situations maybe, but I’d expect Lawson to get the bulk of the playing time.

I think the ravens D will be fine
They’ll still have a ton of playmakers

He's got a point
One of them will get lured away and then the whole scheme is shot
Especially if Rex Ryan counts as one of them. This defense could be introuble if they lose half their LB corp and Rex Ryan.

No...They should go after Suggs!
but only if his shoulder injury today isn’t that big of a deal

sugg signed a huge contract at the start of the season if i am not correct
According to the comminsioner of the nfl, 104 people retired last year. 7 due to age, and the rest because of Patrick Willis

franchise contract
He signed a 1-year franchise player contract. So they could conceivably franchise him again, although Ray Lewis is also a free agent, so maybe they use it on him….

Franchise tag
im pretty sure he played with a promise that he would not be tagged again

I think thats a better idea
He’s a lot younger

Omg
best not to even think about that. You’ll get your hopes up too much. :)

too late. I’m basically obsessed with the idea of Haynesworth anchoring the D-line freeing up Willis and his crew to do their thing
by sam23 on Jan 12, 2009 2:22 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
What are our chances to sign Haynesworth?
Who else has a better chance to sign the guy?

First and foremost
The Titans… with the Franchise tag
by Sebaz49 on Jan 12, 2009 12:33 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Nope.
Part of his contract this year. If he makes the Pro Bowl this year he can’t be tagged, and he made it. So they’d have to sign him to a long-term contract.

How’s that, any better?
by methodrampage on Jan 13, 2009 8:36 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Didn't know that
Ok, so the flag is out which makes it a little more likely he’ll hit free agency. Again, as I’m assuming method implied above, even without the tag, I’m sure the Titans will do everything they can to work out a long term contract.
Then you have teams that are probably in much better cap situations than the Niners, (though I’m not sure what they can work out with Smith and what cutting Jennings, I’m assuming they will, will do to the cap number) and will be able to bid higher than the Niners.
Also, who knows if Haynesworth is a Singletary kind of guy. I’ve heard talk that he’s really stepped up his game this year since it’s a contract year. Is he just going to take it easy once he gets that monster contract?
If he seems legit, in that he will play hard after getting paid, and the Niners have the cap space, I would love them to pursue him. But I think the Titans have a good chance of resigning him, and if not a bidding war might get too price for the Niners. We’ll see soon enough.

49ers cap situation
The 49ers cap situation may be one of the best in the NFL. I’m too lazy to look it up, but Matt Maiocco mentioned the other day that the 49ers may have $22M to $30M in cap space this year to spend on free agency and the draft.
There’s a lot you can be disappointed in the new front office about, but managing the cap is something they’ve done pretty well (considering the 49ers have been in the heap of things in terms of large free agent signings).

Oh....
I foget where I looked recently but it had the Niners with the 9th or 10th highest salary total in the league in ’08. I guess it was either a bad source or the cap figure is going to change some in ’09.
Either way, that’s good news. Hopefully we could put that to better use than Jennings…
And I agree, the FO, and even Nolan to some degree, did a good job of clearing the cap space for this team, even with some wasted money getting passed around, e.g. Smith, Davis, Jennings.

No
we should not sign Ray Lewis. Lewis is a great player who can do a lot, but he would take up to much cap room. We should use that cap room to get another player. Like a great wide reciever or a good ol or dl man

I understand that restricted and unrestricted free agents has to do with their tenure in the league. What implications does the team that signs another’s unrestricted free agent incure?
by MinerNiner on Jan 11, 2009 9:57 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
restrictions
I don’t have the rules in front of me, but when you sign unrestricted free agents, it affects your chance to get compensatory picks. I believe if you lose more than you sign you get comp picks of some kind. I don’t know the exact details on that.
As for restricted free agents, depending on the type of contracts offered it costs certain types of draft choices. It’s covered in Article XIX of the CBA (a little too detailed to include here).

Okay. So Housemanzedah(sp) is a likely target in addition to using a draft pick on a reciever?

saw a little blurb about it on maiocco

There's no penalty for signing another teams UFA's
you just have to fit them under the salary cap
by Brendan Scolari on Jan 12, 2009 1:18 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
True, it's not like MLB
But if you lose a bunch of really good players via free agency and fail/choose not to sign any really good free agents then it’s possible to gain compensatory picks (which start at the end of the 3rd round).

Our biggest need is a playmaking safety and pass rushers. Ray Lewis doesn’t provide either of that. He might get a few sacks, but that is not where his value is.
