49ers All-Time Safety #2

The voting is in and people seem to prefer we go with two general safety positions, instead of a free safety and a strong safety.  We all know who the #1 all-time safety will be.  However, I'm a big fan of voting so we'll hold off on naming him and let you guys vote on the #2 safety.  Given that we're almost finished with the roster (two safeties, coach, any other suggestions?), might as well get some voting in.

The 49ers have had a strong history of quality safeties, particularly in the last thirty years.  I know a lot of people would have liked to see Taylor Mays drafted and join that group, but that won't be happening this season.  Here's hoping that Dashon Goldson could be that guy, because Mark Roman certainly is not.

Merton Hanks (1991-1998): I'd like to think everyone remembers his "funky chicken dance."  Unfortunately I couldn't find video on YouTube, so you'll have to settle for a picture.  If you can find video, please post it.  Hanks was primarily known for that, but in reality he was a phenomenal safety, finishing 5th on the 49ers all-time INT list, and second among safeties.  Equally important was that Hanks knew he was the man at that position.  Hanks didn't have an especially long career, but from 1994-1997, he was one of the best free safeties in the NFL, going to the Pro Bowl all four seasons, earning all Pro honors once and finishing with 22 interceptions in that stretch.

Tim McDonald (1993-1999): McDonald combined with Merton Hanks to form a veteran duo in the defensive secondary, that was as good as any in the league.  McDonald was in his prime when the 49ers signed him away from the Cardinals and in his seven seasons with th 49ers he finished with 20 interceptions, good for 13th all time.  That's especially impressive given that he was a strong safety, a position that doesn't always end up with the high INT numbers and often slightly less athletic than the free safety.  McDonald was named to three Pro Bowl squads during his time with the 49ers.  One interesting note unrelated to his 49ers career is that he was one of six safeties named to the 1999 Walter Camp All-Century college football team (along with Ronnie Lott, among others).

Dwight Hicks (1979-1985): Hicks sits right behind Merton Hanks as sixth all-time on the 49ers INT list.  Although I was only two at the time, many people might remember him for a key early interception against the Bengals in Super Bowl XVI after the 49ers had already turned over the ball.  In seven season with the 49ers, Hicks returned three of his 30 interceptions for a touchdown.  And oddly enough (or maybe not?), he's even got a MySpace page.  I'd imagine it's real, since how many people would imitate Hicks on the Internet?  Since the end of his NFL career, Hicks has actually developed into quite the character actor.

Mel Phillips (1966-1977): Consider this the old-timers division.  Phillips spent 12 seasons with the 49ers and now is the secondary coach of the Dolphins.  He is listed as having 12 interceptions, but some of those older numbers are a little less reliable.

Tony Parrish (2002-2006): Parrish only spent 4+ seasons with the 49ers, but it's easy to forget how much of a badass he was in that limited time.  In his four full season with the 49ers, Parrish had 22 interceptions, enough to put him eighth on the all-time list.  He actually had 16 interceptions in his first two seasons, along with a pair of forced fumbles and 125 total tackles.  I was actually quite excited when the 49ers signed Parrish and for the first couple of seasons, he paid huge dividends.

I loved Tim McDoland

he’s probably my all time favorite Niner. But I had to vote for Hanks on this one.

Jeff Fuller

I wish Fuller had had a chance to play out a full career with the Niners. I think he would have been sick!! Man could he hit!

Fuller

You’re the second person to specifically mention him. For those wondering, my list is a bit subjective and due to my memories not really picking up until the last couple years of his career, it’s my fault some guys are left off the ballot.

I’d imagine I left off plenty of solid options in several positions: http://www.ninersnation.com/section/all-time-49ers

Safties and stuff

Dwight Hicks was in The Rock, Armageddon and The O.C. (well there were hot girls on that show). big ups to Dwight Hicks.

Tony Parrish won’t win, but he far and away the best DB and maybe the best defensive player on some bad secondaries and defenses (I’m talking to you Hoselio Hanson).

Parrish

I really liked Parrish and always thought he was a great safety. I still remember him catching up to an Eagles reciever and knocking the ball lose through the back of the endzone that saved a touchdown and got us the ball. But unfortunately he was with the team for a short time and it’s really hard to call him the teams all-time #2 safety for what was really 3 1/2 seasons. Maybe if he played with us a couple more years and kept up the same level of production, I’d change my vote.

So I had to vote for the chicken dance man. I grew up watching the Niners in the 90s (too young for the “glory years” of the 80s unfortunately) so I remember Hanks playing in the backfield. Well, that whole defense was solid, and McDonald also helped make that a scary backfield. I guess what I’m trying to say is when I think back to those DBs, the thing I remember most is the dude with that goofy ass, long neck making so many plays.

Other All Time Niner voting options

All Time Hottest Cheerleader, complete with photos, profiles, and stats (hip to waist ratio)

All Time Biggest Fan, complete with pictures, a short blurb by said fan, and favorite list of his/her own

All Worst Players – Who we love to hate/blame for everything

Favorite overall team – super bowl years, playoff teams, etc

Blind devotion.

All-worst

I was actually planning on that. I think that one would be a lot of fun.

I also like the favorite overall team vote. I might have to take nominations for non-Super Bowl teams since there are some interesting other options.

For All-Time Hottest Cheerleader, I’m not even sure where to begin with that one. But certainly a winning option.

All-Time Biggest Fan: Any ideas on how to come up with a list?

Fan

Self application? Send in a picture, a short 100 word blurb on why you are the biggest niner fan, games you have gone to, contact with niners, favorite niners moments, kind of a “Niner Facebook” profile summary (wow what an awful simile)

As for the cheerleader, you can easily look at the current Gold Rush lineup, maybe do a google search for previous gold rushers (Jeff Garcia’s wife gets an honorable mention in the category, ohhhhh sooo hottttt…. want to touch the hineeeee). Where there is a will, there is a way, and with the lineup of codgery horn dogs on this site, i’m sure there is a large collection of wills.

Blind devotion.

Alex Smith All-Time Worst QB?

I’m being serious. Obviously there needs to be some kind of qualifying standard but is there any QB statistically worse than Alex Smith?

See that's the thing

Druckenmiller started 1 game for the Niners. That shouldn’t be enough to qualify for consideration of the all-time worst team. Maybe like 16 games played/started as the qualifying floor.

Druckenmiller

Part of that is factoring in draft status though. Druckenmiller was drafted to be the guy of the future and seemed to only infuriate 49ers fans. So I guess that would be making it a combination of all-time worst and all-time most hated. Should there be a division there?

by Fooch on Jan 15, 2009 5:45 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

For me, extended playing at a sucky level would elevate someone like Smith above Druckenmiller (who hardly ever saw the playing field) on the worsterer scale.

Steve Stenstrom?

GROUGTHINK ALERT

1 year as a 49er

3 games started. We had qualifications like having to have played a bunch of seasons with the 49ers to qualify for the all-time best team which is why I think Dieon Sanders didn’t make the team. There would be a ton of busts/1 year and done guys but do we really consider those guys 49ers? Are we going to consider Lawrence Phillips and Rashaun Woods? Niether one made a start for the 49ers.
