Julius Peppers Chance?
I was reading on the nfl.com where Peppers agents released a statement that peppers want out and will not sign a long term deal. It also stated that he wants to play in a 3-4 theme that allows him to use all of his atheltic ability....heres the link

He wants to get away from Carolina and I would assume that might also mean away from the east coast teams because that is all he is use to. What do you think the chances are that the 49ers brass will spend the big bucks to get him? We all have stated that we need a pass rush and that if the yorks can spend the money on Nate Clements then this should be a no brainer right?
Anychance this happens guys? What are your thoughts?

I will say...
that it is highly unlikely seeing how many needs that the teams needs on offense and spending the money on peppers would virtually take all the money for next year. But dang wouldn’t that be a defense to reckon with? peppers, willis, clements, spikes(bring him back). If Balmer could step into that DT spot we would be nasty!

he would make our d nasty, then we can take our first pick on o-line.

franchise issues
I’m curious if the Panthers use their franchise tag on Peppers or Gross, or neither…

I think they almost have to use it on Peppers and then try to deal him now.

I’d rather have Haynesworth. I dont really understand why Peppers want to play in a 3-4….he wants to move to linebacker? He’s a bit small for a 3-4 end.

Um...
Julius Peppers is not small. He’s 6’7, 283 pounds. He’d be the biggest linebacker in football actually.

did you even read what I wrote?
He’d be a huge linebacker, but I’m not sure I’d want to spend a ton of money on the gamble that he could make that transition and he is small (as in thin) for a 3-4 end.

I highly doubt anyone would want to play 3-4 end.
He could be what they tried to make Justin Smith at the beginning of the season.

And that experiment worked so well....
I think what sam23 is saying is that a team shouldn’t spend the kind of money on a player like Peppers to move him from his “natural” position to a position he hasn’t really played in the NFL. It’s a fairly big risk (and a VERY big investment).

My fault
I thought you said he’d be small for a 3-4 OLB. How big should a 3-4 end be?

about as big as a 4-3 tackle
Which is to say, bigger than Peppers.

i agree
Why would a pass rush d end want to play in a 3-4… he must want to move to OLB…. We dont not need a D end… its probably the second strongest position on the team outside of inside LB

whoa, what?
We dont not need a D end… its probably the second strongest position on the team outside of inside LB
I’d assume you meant the double negative if not for the second half of that comment. I mean…what?
Justin Smith is good. Great, even. But…Sopoaga? Balmer? Ray McDonald? Seriously? We are very, very far from being anywhere close to deep at DE.
by shlecko on Jan 19, 2009 6:26 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
OH ok.....
Sopoaga is a good player… we gave him that money for a reason… if you go back to the posts last season before we re-signed i was telling everyone that we had to… he does all the small things that arent going to jump out at you unless you’re paying attention. There was a thread on players we should resign and let go and of course a lot of people that dont pay attention or know football and are just fans wanted to let him go. So don’t bag on Sopoaga. I think he would make a good NT for us… better than Franklin but i think management feels he is too talented to put there. He can get better push a DE.
Balmer is a 1st round pick … so we have to sit and see but that is a big investment for the position.
McDonald is a very talented player. In 2007 the Florida Defensive coach was asked the player he missed the most and he said McDonald. If he could just freaking stop jumping off sides.
Smith and Sopoaga are veterans and u have two young backups…. Thats where we want to be. What positions do you think are in better shape?…. i would love to hear this.
by Qbgetter13 on Jan 20, 2009 5:57 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
What positions are doing better than end? How about linebacker, running back, tight end, defensive backs, and most of the offensive line? The only weaker positions, I think, are defensive tackle, quarterback, and maybe offensive guard. You could make an argument our receivers are in worse shape; I think our young talent is pretty okay.
Our current ends can’t hold their men and let our OLBs get any pressure. You build from the lines out to build a great team, and depth on the line is the way to do it. Look at the Giants last year – four great ends in Strahan, Umenyiora, Kiwanuka, and Tuck. Barry Cofield and Fred Robbins are pretty impressive on the interior, too. That defensive line was insanely dominant due to depth – the entire line was going all-out on every single play. And that defensive line won the Super Bowl almost on their own.
That said, I don’t think that Pepprs is the man to take in our 3-4. He’s a speedy edge-rusher, not the kind of guy who pins down his man and lets Manny or Parys sweep in to smack up Tony Romo.

NO
First off i said inside LB was better off.
Running back we have a great player obviously but we need to go to a two back system and draft a change up back (wrecking ball or burner) over another DE. Especially since we are going to focus on running the ball. I think Clayton is good but he’s not a changeup.
Tight End… i agree it is probably stronger.
DB’s … are u serious?….wow…… ok ….. this to me is not even an argument but i’ll try to point out the obvious for you. WE HAVE NO FS. Goldson is Avg and wasnt even good enough to de-throne roman. (well he got hurt)… whatever he has not proven anything, even when he plays. Harris got spanked a lot last year by the quicker receivers. He needs down graded to nickle. Ok who replaces him? I hope tarrell brown can but nothing is proven. If Michael Lewis goes down we have Keith to back him up. I love Keith. He is hell on wheels for special teams but he cant cover to save his life and if you watch you know that. We need a backup SS to prep in case M. Lewis gets hurt. DB a strong position? no!
The offensive line cant stay healthy. We have Staley at LT (solid). Hopefully Rachal can be an answer at G. Snyder can step in at the other guard or tackle. Let’s say Jennings is set to play RT. He gets hurt constantly and it would be nice to draft a horse and stick him at RT to beat out Jenning or just wait for him to go down again. Wallace is supposed to take over at Center. So in my opinion unless snyder can really hold it down, we need antoher G. I def think we need a G and T over a DE. We also need to bring another C or let Wragge do it.
You cant put the lack of pressure on our DE’s … i would put it on play calling… and they just cant get pressure like they should…. Our best rusher is Haralson even though Green did much better than last year when his number was called. Lawson has had a couple plays but he has problems finishing the play with an actual tackle or sack. We have two good guys in Sopoaga and Smith…. We have two young back up getting groomed in McDonald and Balmer. We dont not need to draft a DE or Acquire one.
I want to hear other arguments for or against this discussion.

Foosball4949 FanPost
He had a FanPost after this one went up so i’m moving his comment here
He says that he wants out of the Panthers because he doesn’t believe that their defensive scheme is right for him. He specifically says he’d like to play for a team that runs a 3-4. As a lifelong UNC fan and current UNC student, landing Pep would be a dream come true and one that I’ve only played out in Madden (obviously, this has nothing to do with the real world, but he’s a pretty damn good OLB). He’s speed and athleticism a freakish and I feel he would essentially be an even better Manny Lawson. He has terriffic hands and is capable already at dropping back into coverage. The $$ it would take to make this happen is no laughing matter, but if the Niners are serious about upgrading their pass rush I would much rather see them sign a young, established rusher like Pep than take a chance on a high orund rookie (hmm, seems familar). Thoughts?

how old is he?
If I gotta play, I'm gonna play 'till I win,
Since I gotta be here, I can´t wait to begin

seems like we fit the criteria
funny how he wants to leave a super-bowl caliber team but whateva
If you had a lineup of 9 Jack Custs who hit(Cust career average) .239 AVG, .382 OBP, and .475 SLG, then your team would score 6.12 runs per game-totalling to 991runs a season. The 08 rangers lead the majors in runs score with 901.

thanks fooch, I appreicate that.
I’m usually very against spending big money on FAs however I can’t really fathom a way that this would fail. I definitely feel that signing Pep would be the best FA move we could make this offseason. I’d even be willing to give of draft choices considering he’s still young, very healthy, and is proven in this league. Much better than taking a chance on a rookie pass rusher which, honestly, is a crap shoot (see last year’s draft). I truly hope that the 49er brass pursue this with some tenacity

i dunno
it is weird that he is leaving a sb quality team so that makes me doubt if hed wanna come to a team like us were its less promising at the moment. i could def see us offering him money after seeing what we did with clements. our d would be nutty good. ’00 ravens d= ’10 niners d hah

Ambivalent
Peppers is a freak of an athlete. He can rush the passer or he can drop back into coverage – Carolina lines him up against receivers on occasion. He’s got incredible size, strength, and speed and generally would make his impact felt all over the field. On the other hand, he’s aging and he has problems with motivation and attitude. He doesn’t always play up to his full potential (maybe Sing could change that?). And he’s going to command a huge, huge contract. It would be incredible expensive to sign him, plus we run the risk of having him play below his potential or just aging poorly.
If we got Peppers, he’d be an absolute beast and help the whole defense – if he aged well and got motivated. But we’d also pay an exorbitant price to get him.
