NFL Conference Title Games Open Thread
The NFL's final four is upon us. The NFC title game is a big ole surprise between Philadelphia and Arizona. The AFC title game is a not quite so surprising matchup of Baltimore and Pittsburgh. I think the Eagles-Cardinals game will feature a whole lot of scoring, while the Ravens-Steelers should be a grind-it-out dogfight.
Philadelphia Eagles (9-6-1) at Arizona Cardinals (9-7)
12:00 PM PST, FOX
Eagles coverage: Bleeding Green Nation
Cardinals coverage: Revenge of the Birds
How many times will we hear discussion of the big chip on the Cardinals shoulder? Or of how Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb overcame the odds. Of course, if the Eagles lose, I'm sure the post-game reaction of the city of Philadelphia will not be pleasant. I think Philly wins this game, but given how topsy-turvy the NFC playoff has been, nothing would surprise me today.
Baltimore Ravens (11-5) at Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4)
3:30 PM PST, CBS
Ravens coverage: Baltimore Beatdown
Steelers coverage: Behind the Steel Curtain
How many times will we hear how these two teams really don't like each other? How many ways can the pregame crew and the announcers predict a smash-mouth type of game? I think the cliches will be truly free-flowin. I think the Ravens pull off the upset. Flacco could completely crap the bed, but the Ravens have done a good job of keeping out of situations where Flacco has to do too much. We'll see if they can keep it up.

Wow
Warner looks on the verge of tears (of joy) just to actually be playing in this game. I’m still rooting for the Eagles, but it kind of makes it hard to root against the Cards. It’s good to see players so thankful for their opportunities. And Warner has every possible reason to be thankful to be here.

They’re not just outplaying Philly. At this point, they are severely outcoaching them. I’m amazed.
Can this keep up in the second half?

Jesus. That looks like Cardinals ball to me. Unbelievable luck on that kick if it gets challenged and overturned.

It did touch him after the bounce (you can see the rotation change), but I don’t think that matters.

That shoulda been Cardinal ball, no question about it
I can’t believe that the announcers weren’t as sure. Karma dictates that the Cards won’t lose after that so I’m officially calling a Cardinals win at 4:20 (hah) Eastern Time. Brave I know given that they’re up 15

Geez
Well, rather than call myself an idiot, I think I’ll make an argument that I was still right about this game.
I said that it would take a Panthers-like meltdown from the Eagles for the Cardinals to win this game, and I actually think that’s exactly what we’ve been seeing. The Eagles came out playing flat. They have a surprisingly uninspired gameplan, which apparently consists of giving Warner lots of time and putting Larry Fitzgerald in solf single coverage.
But more than that, the fact really is that the Eagles have caught every single break that this game has thrown, and they’ve taken a big crap on each and every one. They caught a huge break on the game’s first interception when Jackson forced the fumble and got the Eagles the ball back – only came away with 3. They caught a big break when they had a chance to make that goal line stand, except Asante Samuel ran into Fitzgerald and gave the Cards a fresh set of downs and, ultimately, 7 points. They caught a HUGE break on the kickoff that was called out of bounds that should have been the Cardinals ball and managed to give that possession up on downs within 90 seconds. Then, they had a chance with the Cardinals backed up on 3rd and 15 with over a minute to play to get the ball back with ANOTHER chance to score, and they give up 20 yards on the way to going down ANOTHER 3 points.
Every single time the Eagles have had a chance to turn this game in their favor (and they have had a LOT), they have come away from the opportunity with next to nothing.
And that is in no way to take away from what the Cardinals have done. Their gameplan has been brilliant and their execution has been consistent and effective. They’ve made big plays at critical moments. They’ve played great and are rightfully winning this game right now.
I just hope the second half sees a better effort from the Eagles.
Also, my favorite “The announcers are making shit up” moment came when Aikman said early on about the Cardinals OC that he tells Warner not to bother with his progressions (which is just BS to begin with, I mean, that guy NEVER EVER told his QB to throw his progressions out the window), and then later said that this same OC praises Warner on his proficiency going through his progressions.
WHICH IS IT AIKMAN? HOW ABOUT NOT MAKING SHIT UP THIS TIME?

Aikman
My favorite bad comment of his was early in the game, it was 7-3, when DeSean Jackson ran down the INT and stripped the ball. Aikman said he felt that would be seen as a turning point. Yea, I don’t think so Troy.
And unrelated, but I’d love to see the Cardinals blow this.

kickoff out bounds and then a missed xp when they should have gone for 2?

going for 2
I’m not sure if they absolutely had to go for 2. Personally I’m a fan of taking the points you can normally get. Obviously they missed the XP but you don’t expect that. If they had made the XP and Arizona gets a field goal here, it would only be a 7 point game (instead of 8 if they failed on the 2-pt conversion). Although all useless now.

Playing We Are the Champions
Really? I understand celebrating the conference title, but it seems a little over the top for a team with a game still to play.

Good for the Cards. They’ve outplayed every team they’ve faced in this post-season and have looked legitimately good doing it.
Also breaking news: Larry Fitzgerald is a great player.

Cards
I’m in the same boat… here’s how I see it…Let the Cards win that way Steelers don’t get the sixth ring, and when the 9er’s beat the Cards next year we can brag about knocking out the champs…
I hate the Cards too and Warner but I can’t accept another team at six SB wins before the niners.

they weren’t good enough to merit any animosity from me, even though they did beat us. Its nice to see the NFC West flipping a giant bird to all the pundits out there
