2009 Niners Nation Mock Draft Database
For those who have been checking in at Niners Nation for at least 10 or so months, you probably remember the mock draft database we had in place last season. There are probably hundreds of mock drafts out there providing useful and not so useful information. Hail Redskins is one of the preeminent mock draft databases, but naturally they focus on Redskins picks. So, last year I decided to create a mock draft database of 49ers picks. We started with just first round picks, but slowly added second and third rounders as well.
Well, now we're back with the 2009 Niners Nation Mock Draft Database. If you checked out last year's, you'll notice some changes. I've removed player height and weight, and I've removed the specific sites commentary. Space was an issue and it's a pain in the butt copying that stuff over. I may add it back in down the road, but I'm not sure yet. As with last year, the plan is to update the database once a week. Of course, if somebody out there has some free time and wants it updated on a more regular basis, I'd certainly accept a volunteer for the task. If you're interested in helping with this, email me at ninersnation@gmail.com (or post a comment here) and we can figure something out.
It's still early so some of these mocks might occasionally throw out some pretty random picks. Also, underclassmen will be declaring in the coming weeks, which will affect many of these mock drafts. Right now we've got 23 mock drafts and I will continue to add more to the list. At the bottom of the page you can see the breakdown of positions and players being projected so far. Also, in the coming weeks I'll add pages with 2nd and 3rd round picks more than likely.
If you don't see a particular mock draft, feel free to let me know through the comments or via email and I'll get them added. There is no real order to these and some obviously are a little more "expert" than others. To give you an idea of the value of some of these mocks: Last year I had approximately 58 first round mocks up and only 2 had the 49ers selecting Kentwan Balmer.

Talor Mays
I don’t care what any mock draft says we need to draft Taylor Mays with the 10th pick!

"With the tenth pick in the 2009 NFL draft...."
Wow Im really hoping for USC’s Taylor Mays. He may be a bit of a stretch with the tenth pick but if we dont take him there he won’t last much longer, with the Texans and Broncos coming up next on the board. Could you imagine the fear our defese would strike in the hearts of opponents. With he and P Willis patrolling the middle of the field. STOP IT. I know we could use a D lineman or pass rusher or even a tackle but I believe someone like Mays would help bring in that sense of toughness that Singletary is looking to establish. I think he can finally put our defense over the hump and make us a consistent top ten defense. Besides I know everyone is tired of Mark Roman but what dissapoints me even more is that Dashon Goldson couldn’t even break the lineup when Singletary was giving everyone but his grandmom a chance to get in the game. Come on Niners. Do this for the FAITHFUL.

Mays
Welcome to both of you. Mays seems like a talented guy, but if you can’t develop a significant pass rush I don’t know how much it matters that you’ve got a great free safety. He’d certainly be an upgrade, but our defensive line seems like it needs to be shored up more significantly. Unless you think we could sit on that until the second round and grab a defensive end then….Thoughts?

Well
There is definitely always talent for the DL in the second round but its discovering that talent that is the issue. You don’t scout a DL for the second round, you pick one and hope he pans out, which is why I’m so torn on the issue. If we pick a FS then you know what, I’m fine with it. If we pick a DL in the first round, I’m fine with it too. If I were picking, my hate towards Roman would get the best of me and I’d pick a safety.

It seems to me that he should've started Sunday
But he didn’t. I wonder if Singletary thinks he’s good enough, and I trust Singletary. I’d love to see Goldson get a chance but if there’s somebody in the draft that looks great we need to jump on it. Maybe DL is more pressing but FS seems like such a forgotten position and its killed us so hard this year.

Now I havent watched every single 9ers game but when I do, it seems as though Ray MacDonald is a force at right end (minus the 1 or 2 offsides penalties he get a game). If you figure Justin Smith is a lock at left end, then the only question mark on the D Line is nose tackle. Abrauyo Franklin has recieved some publicity these last few weeks but I’m much more concerned about the less than stellar year and a half we’ve invested into him. Maybe Singletary is finally getting what Nolan couldn’t out of Franklin. Its pssible but not very probable. I would be just a happy if we picked up a monster to anchor the middle like Boston College’s B.J. Ragi or Michigan’s Terrence Taylor. However I am dying for the taste of just one winning season and over the last couple of years defensive tackles really don’t make a huge contribution in there first 2 or 3 years (2008: KC Glenn Dorsey, NO Sedrick Ellis, 2007: Hou Amobi Okoye, GB Justin Harrell). Of that group of first round DTs only Okoye has made a slight name for himself. So I’m not that sold on the whole nose tackle thing.

TAYLOR F**KING MAYS
The kid is a beast! Take him! Case Closed! With some more coaching from Singletary this kid will be one of the best safety’s in the league.

For the record
I like Goldson alot but man…. Mays is a freak. There should be some good free agent pass rushers to pick up anyways.

Goldson
I realize you can have both on the roster, but I’m curious what you think they would do with Goldson if they took Mays?

Hard to say
Goldson would probably come in when they use 3 safetys and special teams. Hard to pass on Mays given his size, leadership, hit power, and speed. Tough one. Just that the upside Mays is hard to pass on thats all.

Goldson
Is also pretty quick so you could maybe use him in the dime over the slot reciever. That is depending on the depth they have next year.

TMay is the Way.
After seeing Taylor Mays explode on both the receiver and his own corner at the same time in the Rose Bowl, I was sold. If Singletary could teach him to keep his head up I could easily see a Ronnie Lott reincarnate in 2009.

Plus, the guy looks like a football machine. Then again, that hasn’t worked out so well for VD.

I think the first draft pick should either be Mays, S, USC or Orakpo( nickname: O-sack-po), DE, Texas. Either one would be extremely helpful to what Singletary wants out of the niners next year.

On an interesting side note
I’ve checked out about 12 mock drafts around the net, and I would have to say that 9 of those mocks had the niners taking a QB in the 1st round (8-Stafford, 1-Bradford), obviously these guys that made the mocks don’t really know what the niners want. I just thought i should throw this out there because even though theyre mock drafts a QB in 9 out of 12 is rather……interesting……..
