Vick in SFO
did anyone read that article on the ESPN NFL "Rumors" section, because i couldn't cuz i dont have Insider. But really, could vick really be a possibility for us? I hope he has his act cleaned up, i wouldn't really mind him in SF, but i also wouldn't want him to ruin a franchise that has better things to come. Hopefully if any of you have insider, can let us in on more detail

Does Vick have a future in Frisco?
Michael Vick | Falcons | Interested: 49ers?
On his NFL.com blog, Adam Schefter has speculated that the San Francisco 49ers may be angling to bring former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick into the mix to be the team’s new field general, should Vick be reinstated by the league when his prison sentence is over.
Schefter notes that the team will interview Dan Reeves today for its vacant offensive coordinator position, and Reeves was the coach of the Falcons when the team traded for a No. 1 overall draft selection to take Vick in 2001. Two other coaches the 49ers have pursued for the vacant offensive coordinator position – Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson and former Falcons wide receivers coach Mike Johnson – also have ties to Vick.
The team has also signed Jimmy Williams, Vick’s former teammate at Virginia Tech, who lives in Hampton, Virginia near one of Vick’s homes.
In 2008, San Francisco’s passing attack ranked No. 13 in the league with 3,379 yards through the air. Shaun Hill and J.T. O’Sullivan combined for 21 touchdowns and 19 interceptions, and were sacked 55 times. In 2006, Vick threw for 2,474 yards with 20 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and also ran for 1,039 yards and two touchdowns.
you're a moron
vick will have lost so much speed by the time he comes back, and he never could throw the ball.
If you had a lineup of 9 Jack Custs who hit(Cust career average) .239 AVG, .382 OBP, and .475 SLG, then your team would score 6.12 runs per game-totalling to 991runs a season. The 08 rangers lead the majors in runs score with 901.
no need to call him a moron
I agree that he probably lost a good amount of speed, but I’m still curious to see what he has and has not lost.

these possibilities
along with other facts would very likely make Vick a low risk signing. I don’t see any NFL team ponying up much cash for him, and it’s not like we’re going to allow the franchise’s future depend on his success.
I don’t see much potential for disaster, so why not take a chance?
That sounds like a big, big stretch of the imagination. To go from “The 49ers have interviewed 3 guys” to “Hey, these 3 guys all have some connection with Vick, however minor” to “The 49ers may be angling for Vick!” is completely ridiculous.
So here’s what I see. The guy says the Niners might be interested in Vick, then doesn’t have any reason to believe that’s the case (no source!) except for some wild speculation based on playing a random game of 6 degrees of separation.
I really wouldn’t take this seriously if I were you, or if I were me, or if I were the guy writing it, or if I were anybody who was alive… or dead.

Funny
Last year I mentioned the idea of Vick in SF and was shot down quickly by most everyone. I still think it would be a heck of a lot of fun to watch him play, and it probably wouldn’t cost too much to get him. I am still for it. Public relations be damned.
STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.
but I also find it interesting
that this seems to be pure conjecture. they’re assuming that because the 49ers have either brought in or are interested in people that are tied to his past, that they are interested in Vick. I am very, very doubtful that Singletary would want Vick on this team.

I am totally against this
This is probably the only signing that the Niners could make that would make it impossible for me to cheer for them when the offense is on the field. Vick is a terrible person…he tortured and killed dogs for fun. I would honestly be cheering for a career ending injury. Please God, tell me the Niners won’t make this move. I love this team too much for this…
Talk me down.

Not to mention
Has he really been that great of a player?
Tons of athleticism, especially as a runner, but a bad attitude in the locker room, and, as a passer, he has ranged between below average and average passing numbers. He will be 29 by the time next season starts and will have come off an extended prison sentence. He also has had some pretty serious injuries in the past.
Even if you don’t share my disgust with Vick as a person, where’s the upside?
Young to Rice. Touchdown.
by Call It The Throw on Jan 23, 2009 2:49 PM PST up reply actions
upside
The upside is that freakish athleticism and the dream of what he could be. I’m not arguing for or against him, but given the talent it’s easy to get mesmerized by the thought of “what-if.”
Of course, he’s never completed better than 56.4% of his passes, surpassed 3,000 passing yards nor had a QB rating better than 81.6.
by David Fucillo on Jan 23, 2009 2:58 PM PST up reply actions
Of course, getting an electrifying runner who hasn’t played in well over a season and is getting into the ages where a person’s running ability begins to deteriorate makes it hard to want him for his playmaking ability since virtually 100% of that playmaking ability is based on his running ability remaining intact over the course of any contract he receives.
Pass. (Also, that would be sage advice for Vick in the future!)

Did you mean to use the word "electrifying"
You guys shouldn’t forget what those dogs suffered through. Even the thought of him being accepted back in the NFL makes me want to puke.

Change of pace QB
I’m been toying with a the idea of a change of pace QB for awhile now, kind of like when Ohio State was playing Prior and Boeckman at the same time. I think he could be pretty effective on 3rd downs where defensives have to stay honest or he’ll easily burn them for 5-6 yards with his feet. I also think Vick will be relatively cheap and can be signed as #2 QB, I doubt anybody thinks he’s ready to be a starter. But I think it would be a big mistake to bring Vick in as your potential starting QB.

Vick owns several NFL records, including the most rushing yards by a quarterback in a single season (1,039 in 2006), highest average per carry in a single season (8.45 in 2006), 100-yard career rushing games by a quarterback (eight), best two-game rushing total (225 in 2004) and rushing yards in a single game (173 in 2002).
His 1,039 rushing yards and 8.4 average yards per carry in 2006 marked NFL records for a quarterback in a single season.
Became the first quarterback in NFL history to tally more than four career 100-yard rushing games as he has now collared eight such contests in his career.
Vick and teammate RB Warrick Dunn (1,140) became the first quarterback/running back duo to each surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a single season, and one of only five teammates to accomplish the feat in NFL history, with the latest being New York Giants’ running backs Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward in 2008. This could be reclaimed with VICK and GORE!
Would enter the 09 season ranked third among quarterbacks for rushing yards (3,859) in NFL history. Behind Randall Cunningham and Steve Young!
Earned his second consecutive and third overall Pro Bowl nod in 2005 as he passed for 2,412 yards and 16 touchdowns in addition to leading all NFL quarterbacks with 597 rushing yards and six scores.
Named to the second Pro Bowl of his career after leading the Falcons to their third division title in team history and breaking numerous NFL and team records in 2004.
Set an NFL postseason record for a quarterback with 119 rushing yards in the 2004 NFC Divisional Playoff win against the Rams.
Became the first quarterback to ever throw for more than 250 yards and rush for over 100 yards in the same game at the Broncos (10/31/04)
From the looks of this…the man has a little bit of skill to speak of. Now weather or not he still has that same level after over a year away from the game remains to be seen. I think he’s worth the risk!

Not the end all...
… be all, but his QB rating has only surpassed 80 ONCE in his career. Sure, he’s fine and dandy making plays with his feet, but he really isn’t a good QB.
thank god
I feel the same way. I will always be a niners fan but if we sign vick….

I don't take issue
If he can actually play. As far as I’m concerned, he’s served his debt to society and he should be able to seek whatever means of employment that he wishes.
Whether he can actually play remains to be seen but I don’t object to the idea based on principal.
Welcome Vick
Im all for it why have Vick go with any other team, when he can play right here. The man has paid his dues, Vick, Gore, Davis, Morgan, re-sign Johnson. No Stoppin Us
Yeah!!!!!!!
And Obama at Nose Tackle! He’ll be our saviour!! Sorry guys, this post infuriates me. I’m done now.

Duo QB formation,
he’ll be a QB/HB hybrid.
And for all you people worried about his demeanor and attitude, let you not forget who our coach is.
An old school sav.
MURS for President!!!!!!!
institute the A-11 offense in the NFL!
(look it up if you haven’t heard of it – it’s good stuff, though it’s unlikely to be seen above the HS level any time soon)
Fur Coat Nite
Shark Fin Soup Night, Cock-Fighting after party’s and Polar Bear Rug Dance-offs would all be wonderful changes in culture too!!
Vick signing with the Niners would be about the only thing that would make me jump ship from the only team that I’ve ever loved.
"We'd like to think that tickets will be hard to come by." Bill Walsh
Hope the 9ers get him
Many people won’t like this but I’m saying it and here it is; I think the whole dog fighting thing was blown way out of proportion. I think it was horrible what was being done to those dogs and he should’ve had to pay fines up the ass for it. But going to jail for over a year when guys like Ray Lewis and Leonard Little get off the hook is rediculous. Especially Leonard Little! In both situations a person died! And they were let off. Dogs in no way compare to people therefore vick should not have had to pay that big of a price when those guys got barely a slap on the hand. Hope he comes to the 9ers and develops into a good QB and not just a runner.
Fans stuck in the 80's are lame. Respect the past, live in the now.
Hell Yeah
bring him in, but as a backup QB/WR/KR
Whatever team signs Vick is going to have a PR nightmare
SF, the second most PC city in the country, (congratulations Berkeley!!), would be insane with all the protests and controversy. I don’t like what Vick did, but I wasn’t as outraged as some. I look at some of the things that modern athletes are doing, and to me dog fighting is way down on the list of offenses.
I hope the niners don't sign him
like maveric87 said the dogs issue for Vick was probably blown out of proportion, and in any case, he has served his time for the offence like methodrampage says and now should be able to go about his life.
Given that, I would not sign Vick because he has been out of the game for 12 months, would be v rusty and it would take at least a further 12 months to get back to his previous level – and his previous level was, frankly, not consistent enough.
I would rather go for a younger QB and let him grow into the role-and, to me, we already have that guy in Alex Smith.Re-work his contract and bring him back instead.

he's scum?
wow that is such harsh words for a human being, I always want to laugh at those of you who judge a person so harshly as if your mistake free, error free and will get a perfect score on the rules of how to live your life. You are the same people who stand up and yell and clap for the players who beat their wifes and other women…give me a break yes what he did was awful no question about it but until you stop clapping for wife beaters, alcholics, drug addicts and murder suspects all whom hurt themselves and OTHERS get off of this “he’s scum and no good”.
You’re probably the same people who…..nevermind…..
Let vick back in and if he is a washed up as much as everyone says he is then okay at least he was given a second chance. I could care less about him being on the 49ers because I trust in Coach Sing. He doesn’t take any nonsense but this article is pue non-sense…why didn’t they say this when they offered the job to Linehan? Did he have ties to Vick? Ahhh probably not which means they weren’t angling for vick.
That would mean that all of a sudden the 49ers have abandoned what they wanted after Linehan turned us down….no way no how
but get off your high horse people….
never accept him
Vick is a criminal that served his time, I am all for him continuing his life. But no where in our constitution does it say that a person has the right to return to his old job. The NFL is a league surrounded by media coverage and since Vick is a PR nightmare no INTELLIGENT team would waste time on him. Maybe he can go into coaching somewhere or find a job as a inspirational speaker, but that depends on who might hire him. But for the NFL, PR is very important and the negative media from his hiring isn’t worth the pathetic output he will provide. This isn’t Steve Young or Randel Cunningham folks, this is a poor qb that liked to run. I agree with some of you, that man would ruin my experience as a 49er fan and I could never cheer them again, but he isn’t scum he just doesn’t deserve another chance based on his history of bad decisions.
But no where in our constitution does it say that a person has the right to return to his old job.
I guess the Bill of Rights missed that one. A better way to phrase that is that nowhere in the constitution does it say that a person DOES NOT HAVE the right to return to their old job. He absolutely has the right to come back to the NFL, having performed the service deemed necessary by the law to make up for his crime. The privilige to come back is completely dependent on whether anybody wants him, though.

People sayin no to Vick are plain just haters i know tons of people that fight dogs and they never went to jail for it, Vick was the first and maybe the last to do so. The man did his time, let the man play with who he want. EVERYONE SAYIN HIS A SCUM YOUR REALLY THE SCUMS HERE. WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE HIM. ANYONE WHO SAY’S THAT THEY WOULD ROOT FOR ANOTHER TEAM GO AHEAD YA REMIND ME OF COWBOY FANS ANYWAYS GO ROOT FOR SOMEBODY ELSE. He’ll return to the Top like KOBE BRYANT, AND RAY LEWIS DID. Another thing like Joey Porter said, Since When has Pittbulls Been America’s Favorite dogs. Never they are the most killed dogs by dog pounds everywhere.
i know tons of people that fight dogs and they never went to jail for it,
Yeah, you know that doesn’t make it any less legal or moral.
The rest of your comment is nonsense.
And here’s the fallacy:
The man did his time, let the man play with who he want.

Vick
I’m actually for letting him have a second chance but that doesn’t mean I have to like him as a person. There are plenty of scum bags in sports (and really in life as we know) but they’re still entitled to play. How can you say they’re scum for thinking Vick is scum for his involvement in dog-fighting and particularly his killing of dogs?
by David Fucillo on Jan 24, 2009 12:52 PM PST up reply actions
BTW
I never said I was against him having a second chance, I’m just against him playing in San Francisco because I never liked him as a player before he went to prison
not against a second chance
wouldn’t be intrigued by him as a QB, too plus I think what he did was terrible. The argument that it’s ok because lots of people do it?…well, I won’t even waste my time with that

vick in sf
i would love to see vick play for SF. that would give the 49ers much desired media attention, hopefully in agood way.
A bay area lova
If Vick were to come to San Francisco, all that media attention that we would be getting wouldn’t be good because it would just become a huge distraction for the players, coaches…well everyone in the organization. plus I think I read this already on one of the posts earlier, but the past few years since Terrell Owens the 49ers have been careful that the players who they pick up will have a positive influence on the team and doesn’t have a…well they don’t want the attention that the San Francisco Giants had with Barry Bonds
