49ers needs: T.J. Houshmandzadeh?!/New WR's?
FOOCH'S NOTE 11:05AM: I wanted to move this to the front page for a couple of reasons. First, it is certainly something worth speculating about. TJ Houshmanzadeh is in the prime of his career and even with our young talent would be an impressive upgrade. Second, I was actually the person who asked this question of Maiocco. Third and most important is the fact that Pro Football Talk actually turned this into a rumor! So I can honestly I helped start a PFT rumor. They based their entire 49ers interest in Houshmandzadeh rumor on Maiocco's response to my question. GIven how vague it is, that certainly says something.
_________________________________________
As Per Maiocco's Q and A:
Question: Any chance the 49ers make a run at TJ Houshmandzadeh? He's 31, but he seems to be right in his prime. Or do the 49ers like their future with Hill, Morgan and Zeigler?
My response: Sure, there's a chance the 49ers go after him. I've heard rumblings the 49ers are going to concentrate on tackle, receiver and safety in free agency. Houshmandzadeh would be a very attractive addition to the team.
Very speculative, no real sources, so its not "news". However this got the wheels turning, and from this I pose two questions:
1) Should the Niners be chasing after TJ, a pontentially aging WR (31 years young) but one with a definite upside?
2) If we are looking to build our WR core via free agency, who will we be focusing on adding to the organization?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

BTW, I suck at quoting, Maiocco's quote is "Question: ... to the team"

my question
I was actually the one who asked that question (as you might have figured from the user name next to it). It was definitely speculative more than anything.

i dont know how healthy TJ is going to be
sounds like he’s had a rough few weeks
Simply by pulling on both ends, Patrick Willis can stretch diamonds back into coal
Did I miss something?
I don’t get it. Is there a reference I’m missing or a point being made that flew over my head? Or was it just an attempt at humor?
I’m lost.
humor
It’s from The Onion, so an attempt at humor.

lol just a stupid onion article i came across

best line
The best line is at the end:
“I’m one of the lucky ones,” Houshmandzadeh said softly. “Muhsin Muhammad was rushed to the infirmary last week and he still hasn’t been back. Rashaan Salaam hasn’t been heard from in years. But the really weird thing is that most of these guys are just shopkeepers and goat herders. It makes absolutely no sense for them to be here.”

I think TJ whoseyamomma would be a great addition
we don’t need a deep ball threat cause shaun hill cant throw it further than 10 yards. TJ is a great route-runner with great hands and has not been a distraction in cincy like mr. ocho cinco
If you had a lineup of 9 Jack Custs who hit(Cust career average) .239 AVG, .382 OBP, and .475 SLG, then your team would score 6.12 runs per game-totalling to 991runs a season. The 08 rangers lead the majors in runs score with 901.
btw
i think we need to sign a proven pass rusher above all else, A Julius peppers/terrell suggs and not draft a edge rusher in the first round. We need someone we KNOW can get to the qb. i think we can use the 1st rounder for a tackle or D-line or secondary(not WR either).

Suggs
He’s quoted as saying he, Lewis and Scott should consider a home-town discount with Baltimore. Of course once one bolts for more money, the rest will as well!

It would be...
nice. I think Hill, Dominique and Morgan still have a year to go to become “top flight” WR’s. with Bruce and TJ, they can watch and learn a couple of tricks here and there. And add Battle to the mix, the WR line-up will be set for a few years. I also believe JJ Finley (given a chance) will help with the offense in terms of receiving. He was a decent TE in college.
"The voice of the intellect is a soft one, but it does not rest until it has gained a hearing"
I agree with you on the WR's
so long as we can work the right deal with him. With the cap set to be abolished from 2010 give TJ the bulk of his contract from then on, but for next season – whilst there is still a cap to work with – work his deal so that it leaves plenty of space to still sign other FA’s where our need is of a higher priority.

Way to get the rumor mill blooming, Fooch
Houshmandzadeh is a CA native, so its at least plausible that there would be mutual interest in he and the 49ers.
Too old
This team is at least a few years away from contending. We need guys who will peak together. Besides, Hill and Morgan look like they have solid futures. So, unless we can get him at a very reasonable price, it makes little sense to tie up a bunch of cap space with an aging WR.
You could have said the same about Isaac Bruce before we signed him last season, and that addition ended up being one of the things that made the team watchable.
Just a thought.

31 not too old for possesion wr
not like its a guaranteed contract, look at bruce. not like tj’s gonna forget how to run routes or catch the ball

The Niners don't need another bad attitude
If you like moody players who sulk and pout on the sidelines and disappear during games, then TJ Houshmanzadeh is for you. Maybe a change of scenery and a tongue lashing from Singletary a la Vernon Davis is the tonic, but Houshmanzadeh would be the second coming of Antonio Bryant or JJ Stokes.
THE BAD ATTITUDE OF T.J. AND CHAD...
COINSIDED WITH THE DEPARTURE OF BENGAL’S OC… HUE JACKSON!! BOTH WR’S DIDN’T TAKE WELL TO HEAD COACH MARVIN LEWIS’ STYLE. THIS IS FROM SFGATE.
BOOOOOO FOOCH!
I spelled TJ’s name wrong on purpose, and you changed it. aaaaaabooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
Anyways, I would love TJ on the team. He has biiiig play potential, and would be that downfield threat that teams would have to respect, opening up Hill, Dominique and Morgan in the shorter game, giving them yards, catches, etc. Besides, why not have a WR superstar to compliment our RB superstar? Now all we need is a superstar qb, and SUPER BOWL XLIV HERE WE COME!!
Blind devotion.

Just an Idea.........
I say we trade our 10th pick with for say, the Raiders or the Bengals and draft Jeremy Maclin in the first round. The kid is an all around player. I think he’s a better overall player than Crabtree. He returns punts and kickoffs. Led the nation in all-purpose yardage as a Soph. Which was 5th in NCAA history. Has great hands. I think he can have the kind of impact on the team that Desean Jackson at with the eagles this year.
3rd round we get a kid by the name of Juice Williams. This kid is better than Donovan McNabb was when he came out and is a mirror image of him with the way he plays. He has a rocket arm, mobile(which we need with our shitty O line) and tough. Had 8 mulity touchdown games last season.
Those are just my suggestions.
Maclin
If the 49ers wanted him, it seems like Maclin will be there at 10. They don’t need to trade up for him.

i really dont think we need a WR. Morgan when he wasnt hurt did a good enough job. J. Hill filled in nicely too. Ziegler is a good enough 3rd wide receiver. S. Hill cant throw the deep ball which we have seen…. think the longest pass i think he threw the whole season was the 50 yarder in the Rams game when Morgan caught it… so no need for a deep threat especially if Singeltary wants to control the clock and run it down peoples throats. we need DEFENSE that can get to the quarterback!!!! so use that $$$$ and pick up some D-LINE then we will be set! ohhh and please resign A. Rossum for special teams. we were hurting without him.
Rossum..
will have one more year with the niners. I think he’ll stay around and help with the developement of Micheal Spurlock who we signed this offseason. I don’t see any other reason to sign Spurlock besides taking the torch from Rossum.
