MIKE SINGLETARY WANTS TO PLAY FOOTBALL

MIKE SINGLETARY WANTS TO PLAY FOOTBALL

The new 49ers coach said Wednesday that he wants “more of a traditional” approach as he
searches for Mike Martz’s replacement as offensive coordinator. Singletary
wants an old-school, sturdy rushing attack to replace the complicated passing schemes
the 49ers attempted under Martz last season. Singletary wants return to smashmouth football,You have to know that you can run the football," Singletary said. “I’m not trying to outsmart anybody. I’m not trying to be a magician. We are playing football.”

Singletary said that the traditional approach works as well today as it did during
his playing days in the 1980s. The top five rushing teams in the NFL. Giants, Falcons, Panthers, Ravens and Vikings are all in the playoffs this
season.

Singletary envisions a roster with a powerful offensive line that can open up holes for running back Frank Gore, even when the opponent knows the run is coming.
“I want to know I can impose my will on the defense,” he said. "I want to be one of those teams where we say, ’It’s been nice playing you, but right now we’re going to take the game over and we’re going to run the football.

Hmmm

This is the kind of talk that makes me a bit worried. I would love to see the NIners be one of the best rushing teams in the league, but I’ve heard a lot of coaches talk about how they want to be able to “run even when the other team knows it’s coming”. It’s a lot easier said than done and usually just leads to an unimaginative and predictable offense

I like

especially the best QB and getting him in the 5th.

MURS for President!!!!!!!

holy O-Line batman

Seriously, 5 O-linemen? Where’s the blocking tight end in there? Where’s the scatback to be the lightning to Gore’s thunder? Or where’s the thunder to make Gore lightning?
And for the love of all that’s holy, please no Losman—or J-Loss as I like to call him.

Throwback unis? Yes. Throwback afros? YES!

Moore

I agree we really need a FS and with Mike getting the job i think the chances we go defense increase greatly but why are u taking Moore over Mays… there will not be another safety like mays for years… mostly bc a guy that dominant will be moved to OLB at most all colleges

by Qbgetter13 on Jan 5, 2009 6:11 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Mays we be Gone By the time we pick at ten 10 spot.

Moore has good Range like Mike Singletary is lookin for can cover, take on blockers
and get off em to make the hit, good open field tackler.

Others Safety not goin in the first.

Kam Chancellor 6-4. Weight: 225 40Time: 4.5 big FS/SS
with great tackling form and hard hitting safety with good cover skills,
An extremely athletic safety that we can steal with the 2nd or 3rd round.

Michael Hamlin, SS, Clemson 6-3. Weight: 205 40Time: 4.51. A four-year
starter for Clemson, 91 tackles, seven passes broken up and six interceptions.
Made the All-ACC First Team.

Eric Berry FS TENNESSEE 6-0 Weight: 190 40Time : 4.36 ALL-American 1st Team Berry
finished the season tied for the FBS lead with 7 interception and a school and
conference record 265 yards interception return as a sophomore, is another great
Saefty but wont come out till next year.

Even though I would get Brain Orakpo(6-4. Weight: 260, 4.6 40time) he will fit
good in our 3-4 defense reminds me of DeMarcus Ware the NFL sack
Leader. Same body frame same quickness. He will be a good Rush OLB

SMASHMOUTH FOOTBALL STARTS AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, CONTROLING THE LINE, WITH THE RB POUNDING IT TO THE SECONDARY DB’s. THERE FOR U NEED BIG OFFENSE LINEMAN THE MORE U GOT HE BETTER. WHY WOULD YOU WANT ANOTHER TE FOR, VERON IS A GREAT BLOCKING TE. SAME GOES
WITH THE DEFENESE OF SIDE BIG NOSE TACKLE AND TWO BIG ENDS.

Drafting a RB is not priority first you need good lineman up front, plus if you look
at the RB that are going to be free agents this offseason we be better off jus signing one.
Few to name, Brandon Jacobs, Rudi Johnson, Dominic Rhodes, Derrick Ward, and
Maurice Morris

Mhmmm

Seems like Moore is a big drop from Mays. Even if Mays isn’t available, I’m sure there will be better options. I would either like to get a DE or OT.

DE: Brian Orakpo, Michael Johnson, Everrette Brown

OT: Michael Oher (probably will be taken), Eugene Monroe

If Aaron Curry is still on the board, i would take him in a heart beat.

We can draft a saftey in a later round if we don’t get Mays.

safety

When you get a safety in the later rounds you get a Goldson… avg cover guy that doesnt want to hit and isnt good enough to beat out mark roman… what is the point…. i dont want a special teams guy… i want a starter… to me this is the most obvious need on our defense….if we wait til after the second round we might as well forget it

You think...

… a safety is a higher need for the 49ers than a stout interior lineman or a pass rushing DE/OLB?

by sfgfan on Jan 6, 2009 9:09 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

no DL

there is not a NT worthy of the pick bc Cody said he isnt coming out last i checked….

We can keep gambling on these DE’s to come in and play OLB all day but it ain’t likely to pan out… the teams that have success with doing this are already good D’s …. thats bc the Offense has to worry about other guys and they bring this rookie on a blitz and he gets a sack… ie steeler with woodley…. the 49ers cant do this… if we waste our pick on orapako im gonna be pissed… i was pissed when we traded to get Lawson and i dont care what anyone says that pick was not worth it…… Parys has been more productive and he was a late pick (6th i believe)… its a crap shoot.. might as well waste a later pick instead of an early one…. anything but an OLB/DE conversion….

I’m so tired of hearing about these high round DE’s every year… if they can pass rush in a 4-3 then great but to stick them at outside LB is a gamble…. for one we dont even blitz enough to scare offenses and utilize those guys like the steelers or ravens… we sit back too much and these conversion guys get beat in coverage when we sit back….

I think a big problem with our defense is the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing… the coaching philosophy isn’t going with the type of defense we are running…. we have enough talent that we should be making things happen

There in lies the biggest question...

… for McCloughan, Singletary, and Manusky. What defense should this team be running?

If the answer to that question is the 4-3, then taking a pass rushing DE early in the draft isn’t THAT big of a risk anymore, as they’re not going to have to worry about learning how to drop back into coverage anymore. In my opinion, this would be the best option for the 49ers with their current roster. All they’re missing (if you count Haralson/Green/McDonald as one potential pass rusher) is a second pass rusher.

If the team tries to force the 3-4 issue again, they need a pass rusher at OLB AND a stout interior lineman. Filling one of those positions is already hard enough, let alone trying to find both in the same draft.

Take Mays instead of Moore

Bring the Pain Train!

All I want is to see Zach Follett jacking people up in a Niners jersey. He’d provide great depth and step up next to WIllis at ILB once Spikes retires (assuming he resigns)

Anyone know what round he’s projected to go in?

by yapheelme on Jan 5, 2009 9:06 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Some...

draft “experts” don’t even have him in their top 10 OLB’s. That’s a shame. If he was playing for USC or Florida, everyone would be talking about Follett being a first rounder.

by Jeff_Fuller_49 on Jan 5, 2009 9:23 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

exactly

Follett – 87 total tackles (58 Solo), 23 TFL, 10.5 Sacks and 5 FF
Maualuga – 79 total tackles (51 solo) 2.5 TFL, No sacks, 2 INT’s, 1 FF
And Maualuga is Pac-10 Defender of the Year and a clear first round (probably top 10) pick while Follett isn’t in the top 10 for OLB’s? I think Follett’s gonna be a steal for whoever gets him (hopefully the Niners)

Mays

Mays could be there…..
Aaron Curry is the only pick that will tick me off
Easy with the Follett talk… Jasper Brinkley would stone him in the board drill… great role player and could get him later in the draft

Mays May Not Declare

I would love to get Taylor Mays as much as anyone else on this board, but he’s an underclassman and last I heard he had not declared for the draft. In addition, one of my good friends is a die hard USC guy. The rumor at USC is that Mays is coming back. Now, that may be wishful thinking from Trojan fans, but the fact of the matter is he doesn’t need the money. Both his parents are executives (at Microsoft and Nordstroms) and his father is a former NFL player (DL, I think). There are also signs that his parents are pushing him to finish his degree unless he’s drafted VERY high. While #10 is pretty high for a safety, unless there’s a clear sign that he’d go that high, he might return to USC to try and get that national title that has eluded him the past 3 years.

I guess we’ll know on January 15. Right now I put his chances of declaring at 50-50.

by kiyoshi on Jan 6, 2009 9:10 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hmmm...

why would he declare? Football players at USC are paid anyway. Just a joke, of course. But, you think the USC football roster is full of NFL’ers. They always get the most 5-star athlete. I wonder what the alumni board and Carroll promises to these guys, other than the obvious?

he promises them....

will farrel and snoop doggy dogg to be at practices every day… and the region sucks when it comes to competition… recruiting is too easy for them… i used to be a usc hater… i dont think they play anyone and they always drop the ball to a team they shouldnt… i cant help but like pete carrol though… that 60mins piece on him was awesome

Alex Smith in 09

Has there been any word on Smith returning next year or any type of restructuring his contract? I think if he comes back and learns an new offense early he can still be a good player.

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

by bayboy on Jan 6, 2009 2:34 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Smith...

… says he’s open to restructuring his deal. McCloughan has said that the only way Smith returns is if he restructures it. That’s pretty much where it’s been for the past two or three weeks. I’m sure it’ll pick up after the season ends and the draft approaches.
