Why be a 49ers fan?

My family and I just moved over from England a few months ago. lately, my friends have all been talking about american football and its all they talk about. They are now telling me that i need a team. We live in Boise, so there is no local team for me to root for and there are obviously no english players for me to root for. Just wondering If I should become a fan of the 49ers. None of my friends like the niners, they are more into the chargers, colts, or cowboys. If you guys could tell me why I should be a fan of your team, that would be great. I need something.

PS- if you want a real football team, GO CHELSEA!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

A few reasons

I am a huge niner fan and am damn proud of it. Our fans are known through the nation for being amongst the most loyal and friendly. We always sell out every game, dispite having a below average stadium. Our team is very young and has a lot of talent. We have a coach (mike singletary) who has established himself as a leader, who wants to win. The players play with so much enthusiam and intensity, and are not loud mouths (unlike Dallas) and have a ton of heart. And we have history. The niners of the 80s and 90s are among the greatest of all time.

According to the comminsioner of the nfl, 104 people retired last year. 7 due to age, and the rest because of Patrick Willis

Welcome to the land of 49ers fans. I’m going to move this to the front page tomorrow late morning to get more eyeballs and thoughts on it. And I’ll give my own thoughts.

The Upside

Welcome Acho, and may I be the one of the first one to argue the case of the 49ers as your go-to team in the NFL.

First, our new head coach, Mike Singletary. If you dont know, Singletary is a Hall of Fame Linebacker that played on the Chicago bears, and has served as the 49ers defensive line backers coach for three seasons. This season, we removed our head coach, Mike Nolan, and put Singletary in charge on an interim basis. The team played with a passion us fans haven’t seen in years, and at the end of the season we put Samurai Mike in charge of this proud franchise on a full time basis. He now has full control of a draft, mini-camp and and time to build the team around a scheme that seemed to have success in the later half of this season.

Second, we have some of the most exciting superstars in the NFL. Patrick Willis is one of the best inside Line Backers in the game; he is hard hitting, quick on his feet, and a reason to watch football period. Frank Gore is a dominating RB on the offensive side of the ball, and the offseason QB drama with Sean Hill, Alex Smith, and/or anyone we might bring to our team in the off season.

Third, and finally for this post, undying passion. Niner fans are loyal to their team til the end, so you will never not have fans with you, supporting the ups (and downs) of this team.

Go Niners! (And chelsea rules too, i’m not below sucking up to add to our ranks).

Blind devotion.

This is easy!

Joe Montana played here. That’s all you need to know.

Seriously, It’s a good time for a new fan to join a team that has some of the most respected history in the NFL. Unfortunately we spent the last 6+ years in the ‘horrible’ column. Now is the time to be a part of the RISE OF THE NINERS!! We’re underdawgs right now. The excitement and celebration when we win the Super Bowl will be so much better for you than being a fan of Dallas, Indy, S.D., etc. Those teams are expected to win it every year- how boring for a new fan.

We got lots of talent here Frank Gore, Patrick Willis is a beast, Justin Smith, Veron Davis, just to name a few we have great tradition here 1st team to win 5 Super Bowl Championships Rings. We have had some of the best players to ever play the game like Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Steve Young, Roger Craig, Charles Haley, Ken Norton Jr. Wait till the 2009 season starts again you will see a great, hungry, young football team

by BIG49ERS_1 on Jan 4, 2009 1:43 PM PST reply actions

Go with history

Three teams have 5 Super Bowl wins — San Francisco, Dallas, and Pittsburgh.

The Cowboys are pure evil, so if you root for them your soul will rot in Hell for eternity. I advise heavily against that option.

The Steelers are a very good, respectable, proud franchise, and would be a good choice, save two reasons: 1) They live in a place frequently (and rightly) called “Shitsburgh”, and 2) They are currently one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl this season, so becoming a fan of theirs right now would be seen (rightly) as bandwagon-jumping, and you’d run the risk of being a fair-weather fan.

The Niners have as proud a history as any franchise in football. Besides our 5 rings — all in the last 28 seasons — our Hall of Fame former coach Bill Walsh revolutionized the league in the 80’s with the “West Coast Offense”, which is now run, at least in part, by the majority of teams in the league. Our alumni includes a number of the best offensive players in the history of the game (Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Jerry Rice just to name the creme de la creme), and we also have recent defensive players in the Hall Of Fame (Ronnie Lott, Fred Dean). In fact, Montana, Rice, and Lott are widely considered the best players at their positions in the history of the game.

The team plays in San Francisco, one of the most beautiful and beloved cities in the world. The team might be a little down recently, but this year they were an improved 7-9, and went 5-3 in the 2nd half under their new coach (all 3 losses came on the road to winning teams, including 2 division winners). They have several good young players, and the future could be bright. Get on board while the gettin’s good!

Check out The Examined Life. Or don't. Whatever.

I back this reason

I think history is as good a reason as any to root for a team. Otherwise, I’m not sure I could arbitrarily choose a team to root for. There would need to be some sort of vested interest for me in the local team. I became a 49ers fan because I lived in NorCal when I started watching football (still do), and my dad and brothers were all Niners fans too. I could have just as easily been a Raiders fan, except they were in LA when I first got into football, and much like the Cowboys, you’re sheer evil if you root for the Raiders.

However, my wife and her family are from Pittsburgh. But because I like you, JfH, I won’t rat you out for that comment. =)

Now that i've read everything above^^^^

I don’t have to say much, except that if you were to become a niners fan you would be apart of one of the most historically rich teams in the NFL, with 5 super bowl championships, and some of the best players in NFL history with the likes of; Joe Montana, Fred Dean, Steve Young, Roger Craig, Ronnie Lott, Jerry Rice just to name a few.

Being a fan

Well, I became a Niners fan because they were the first team I saw growing up as a kid. And living in the Bay Area, it helped that I could follow them.

I think that you should find a few players that you like and maybe be a fan of their team. But I think that you choose a team that you like because of their play, their history and just what makes you like football.

But it’s like being a fan of a team from any other sport. There is always something about that team that stuck to you more than any other team. That’s the one you stick with

Eh, there’s really no good reason that’s going to make anybody a fan except for 1) actually enjoying the sport, and 2) following a team until you realize that enjoy following that team.

So, become a 49er fan because you try following them for a year or so and then suddenly realize that you’re actually rooting for them. You can follow other teams while you do it, too, and if you end up suddenly rooting for them instead, well then there’s your answer.

Just remember what I said about the babies.

Pick whoever gets the most coverage in your area

Honestly, there is no real arguement for picking one team over another (except for the Raiders and Lions). I’d just pick the team that got the most coverage in your area, that way it’s a lot easy to keep track of them.

Be a Cowboys fan

If you’re a Chelsea fan you’ll be used to the media circus atmosphere and the gauche, nouveau riche attitude of ownership contrasted with the drooling, sneering redneck/chav element of the fanbase.

by howtheyscored on Jan 6, 2009 8:24 AM PST up reply actions

I still hate the Packers

and while it’s not a rivalry anymore, I missed the days when we clashed with Carolina.
During their brief (and odd – isn’t Carolina on the east coast?) stint in the NFC West, we had some good battles.

Falcons and Saints go on that list, too. They’ve become neutral since leaving for a division that makes sense, but we enjoyed beating up on them for years.

I almost brought up the Panthers, because man I hated them at the time.

The Raiders are just not a rival in my book

We hardly ever play them. You just cannot be rivals with a team you play once every five years.

This is probably influenced by the fact I’m more pro-Al Davis than most, but I don’t hate the Raiders at all. They function in a parallel universe.

by Bitter Fan on Jan 8, 2009 9:43 AM PST up reply actions

actually it’s every 4th year and we still play them every year in the preseason, in which the players still get into fight during their scrimmage

And the Rams are rivals, though it isn’t as big of a rivalry as they were even 10 years ago, you can count the cardinals because i think that the rivalry is just heating up, and i agree with the fact that the ’boys, packers are also rivals

Rivals

Main Rivals
Arizona- Rising Rivaly(As a new fan, you will see them as a rival, and not as a lovable loser, so you may be the largest anti zona fan of them all)
Seattle- Big Rival over last six years. They have dominated the nfc west, but are going down hill
St. Louis- Classic niner rivals, tracing back to the LA rams. It has calmed a little in the past few years, but if st.louis can ever draft a good olinemen, then it might come back
Oakland- Battle of the Bay, probably are biggest current rivals. We represent the classy, well functioning organizion, while the raiders are the loud mouth, disfuntional organization.
Dallas- Pure Evil. Nuff Said
Others You Might Consider Hating
Pittsburgh- A classy and respectable fanchise none the less, but the second biggest fan base in the nfl for a city of around 300,000 makes you question the loyality of the non native Pittsburgh fans. The team never has an off year, which can get under peoples skin. They are also tied with the niners and cowboy with 5 superbowls, most of all time
Green Bay Pckers- Without Farve, they are a new team, but they have dominated us over the last 15 years
New Orleans Saints- Old time rivaly when they were in our division. Another lovable loser, but they have had a lot of success against us over the last six years, and are now known as underacheivers.

According to the comminsioner of the nfl, 104 people retired last year. 7 due to age, and the rest because of Patrick Willis
