Once the Season is Over Greg Manusky Needs to be Fired
San Francisco 49ers statsSan Francisco 49ers roster
It's amazing how a few wins can get you to a point where you forget about what one of the main problems was. Now that there's another embarrassing loss against one of the more talented teams in the league, it quickly comes back into the forefront.
Last year, I wrote an article on Greg Manusky calling him the worst Defensive Coordinator in the league and that designation still rings true today. I do not believe he'll ever be a good fit for the 49ers and he should have been fired at the end of last season.
Here's the link to my first article on Manusky http://bleacherreport.com/articles/85069-the-san-francisco-49ers-home-to-the-worst-defensive-coordinator-in-football
Not that anything has really has changed in terms of the 49ers defense. It has become a little bit more aggressive, but I attribute that to Mike Singletary's influence on the team and not Manusky's.
Now since Manusky has been coordinator for the 49ers let's take a look at what has happened against the talented teams in the NFL.
Today's game is an example: 35 points given up in one half, three rushing touchdowns for Michael Turner, and 185 yards receiving by Roddy White.
That's just one example though there's plenty more which I will get to. Manusky was hired by the 49ers has the Defensive Coordinator in 2007. My concern is with Manusky is that this type of effort, this type of defensive play-calling is going to happen in the playoffs and the 49ers are going to be embarrassed.
Let's look at the 2007 season defensively.
49ers allowed 364 points which was an average of just about 23 points per game. Now here's the points given up to teams with a record above .500: Steelers 37 points, Seahawks 23 and 24 points, Giants 33 points, Browns 20 points, Buccaneers 19 points.
Against the teams that were .500 or below the numbers were: Cardinals 17 and 31, Ravens 9, Saints 31, Falcons 20, Rams 13 and 16, and Panthers 31.
You get the reason why the 49ers were only 5-11. Their only win against an above .500 team were the Buccaneers.
Furthermore, there was only five times the 49ers allowed less than 300 yards of offense. Falcons, Vikings, Giants, Cardinals, and Rams. The sad part is the defense allowed 22 points per game when allowing under 300 yards.
That means those teams were very efficient in terms of making plays and scoring the football.
Looking at where the 49ers ranked on defense will help, as they gave up 5.1 yards per play, 24 touchdown passes and the defense only picked off 12, average yards per attempt was 6.3, 31 sacks, and the defense gave up 187 first downs through the air.
Their defense against the run the 49ers gave up 1896 yards rushing, which is 3.8 yards per carry, also gave up nine touchdowns, and 94 first downs on the ground.
In Manusky's defense the run was pretty well contained but the passing lanes were easy to pick apart because the 49ers defense didn't get pressure on the quarterback and that continues to happen for the 49ers now.
Looking at the 2008 defense, they actually gave up more points than the 2007 defense. In 2008 the 49ers allowed 24 points per game and gave up a total of 381 points.
Against the teams with a record above .500 the 49ers defense looked like this: Cardinals 23 and 29, Patriots 30, Eagles 40, Giants 29, Cowboys 35, Jets 14, and Dolphins 14.
When the 49ers faced teams at or below .500 the points looked like this: Seahawks 30 and 34, Lions 13, Saints 31, Rams 16 and 16, Redskins 24, and Bills 3.
The 49ers did have seven games where they gave up less than 300 yards on defense. Jets, Dolphins, Lions, Seahawks, Redskins, Giants, and Cardinals. Even with that the 49ers still managed to give up 22 points per game.
In terms of the defense as a whole the 49ers gave up 5216 yards for an average of 5.1 yards per play. For defense against the pass the 49ers gave up 3507 yards, 22 touchdowns and had 12 interceptions, 6.1 yards per attempt for the quarterback, had just 30 sacks, and teams achieved 170 first downs through the air.
Defensively against the run the 49ers gave up 1709 yards, 14 touchdowns, at 3.8 yards per attempt, and 108 first downs.
2009 so far the 49ers defense looked good against teams that had a combined record of 2-9. Defense did well against the Vikings but didn't make the plays they needed to get the 49ers a win.
In terms of team record against the teams the 49ers have lost to, it's at 6-1. There's a big difference between the two winning teams the 49ers have faced then the teams with the losing records.
Also, if you'll notice that in 16 games in 2007 the 49ers had 31 sacks and in 2008 they had 30 sacks. When a team averages less than two sacks per game that's really telling you that the quarterback has plenty of time to throw the football.
It's not a huge wonder why the corners of the 49ers get beat by wide receivers; the guys up front aren't creating any pressure on the quarterback. That's one of the biggest frustrations with Manusky, very rarely will the 49ers get after the quarterback and since it's the NFL if you give a quarterback all day to throw the defense is going to get shredded.
Right now the 49ers need to make a change defensively and that is to get rid of Manusky it probably won't be during the season, but it should definitely happen afterwards.

I know right now feeling like everyone should be fired, but team would be winless if our D wasn’t tops in many rankings (before this disaster game of course). Sure we haven’t played the Saints, Colts, etc. thede first couple games…but Vikings, Cards are not the worste teams in the league. Incredibly bad showing against Falcons, as even commentators were getting on the team. Gotta hope this was just a poor game we can learn from and look towards our diva WR bringing something to an offense that is obviously deserving of some of their league rankings at the bottom.
LOL is this serious?

Wow…. Are you really trying to blame 2007 on the defense? The offense was horrendous, even this year it’s been mostly bad.

bad week
it happens. get over it. 2 weeks to recover. im more worried with the look of hill’s deep ball when he DOES have enough protection.
speaking of enough protection
should we maybe fire chris foerster, the o-line coach? we know we have some talent on that line and they still suck every week.
I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.
have to disagree.
they hadn’t allowed a rushing touchdown before today, and only 4 in the passing game. they were giving up 13 points per game. this was clearly a fluke game for the defense.
and 2007 is a moot point now, because the defense has significantly improved.
I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.
This season at least, the offense far more concerning than the defense.
"I wish the Seahawks were back in the AFCW so we didn’t have to face Willis and Gore twice a year."
Totally disagree
The scheme is good and Manusky has done a good job of simplifying so the players can make plays and not have to overthink. Two problems in this game: this young defense seemed to start believing in their press clippings and they clearly gave up and stopped playing hard very, very early in this game. As a fan I feel very cheated by the effort. Also, I think it is way too early to start calling Patrick Willis the best linebacker in the game. I think a little more growth and experience is necessary.

Ummmm
It wasn’t manusky who simplified the defense it was Singletary. Singletary needs his own man to run the defense not Mike Nolan’s!
If Singletary wanted someone else
He would have fired Manusky after the 2008 season.
Manusky is Sing’s guy.
But you still can’t blame Manusky if his players can’t tackle.

Ever heard of a new playbook?
Do you have any idea how large these playbooks are? This is the 7th OC in as many years and he wants to bring the team along slowly. Some of you guys are pitiful with you r rants and raves about firing coaches. Coaches are just educated baby-sitters and it’s up to the players to execute on the field. If Hill threw better passes that completed you’d be ready to two hand serve Jimmy Raye. You guys are comical how you turn on coaches because of a bad game.

Really?
Is this what this site is going to be resorted to for the next couple of weeks? One week we have a top 10 defense and now well we have to fire the defensive coordinator. I mean give me a break!!! People chill the heck out, take a deep breath and relax. It is one game people, our defense didn’t forget how to play overnight.
Teams have bad games during the course of a 17 week season, it happens to even the best teams (See the 49ers-Eagles 1995 game) It just so happened this game was a lot worse then any of us could have imagined.

Last Week
He was proclaimed the orchestrator of an elite defense. Now he’s garbage that needs to be fired.
A rational person would figure he’s somewhere in between.
If we thought today was bad ...
The game against Indy is going to be U.G.L.Y.

Yes, today was a terrible game… But I think we just had a really bad week.
We all know we should have never got destroyed in this game. We are not that bad of a football team. Singletary will make this a long bye week for the Niners..

Oh yeah, since Manusky is out there missing tackles and fumbling footballs.
Get a clue fool.
What we just witnessed was HORRIBLE execution.
You can’t blame Manusky if his players play like they did today.

Amazing how dum some 9ers fans are.
We have 1 big blowout loss and its “fire everyone” all of the sudden? Rediculous.

Not from week 1-4
Funny how you just ignore their play the previous 4 weeks.
And how you refuse to acknowledge that the players couldn’t execute (something Mausky can’t be held accountable for).

it's 2009
until today we have had a top 5 defense. Who cares about the last 2 years?
"Pat is still just scratching the surface." - Coach Singletary on LB Patrick Willis
AGREED
Who cares?! And the defense finished in the best half of the league by the end of last season. Last year doesn’t matter. What matters is now and the D has been stellar until today. The team had a bad game. What matters is how they bounce back. Good thing its before the bye. So Sing can get the kinks worked out. We can all calm down. It was 1 game. No one needs to be fired yet.
"Bar None!" - William Floyd
I understand the pessimism but it's a little overboard.
We have holes in our lineup and they still have played above potential. I do think we need personnel changes, but I’m not sure people are aware of how dramatic of a change is neccessary. We need OL, DB’s, and despite the number on the roster we still need wideouts. As far as personnel goes we have a lot of changes needed and the coaches can only do so much. We don’t have a consistent push up front, key word CONSISTENT. Hill is a good QB but his throwing style is an issue. I know you can’t measure his heart and determination, but his pocket presence is poor, IMO and his release is an issue as well as how good of a ball he throws. These issues can’t be addressed this season and I’m fine with the performance thru 5 weeks. We took care of business when we needed to agaisnt the Division opponents, and have a bye week to work on execution. There is still a lot to be optimistic about.

Look we played
the Vikings (away) and almost pulled off the win; should have. I don’t think the Falcons are a better team than Minnesota. I’m not sure where everybodys heads were at this afternoon, but I suspect that the defense will show up again against the Texans. That was not the team we have watched 4 times previous to this for whatever reasons today.
Rocky-
I think you are talking from the wrong side of the ball. Jimmy Raye is just flat out horrible. He needs to go. As far as the D is concerned, they just had a complete meltdown in execution and focus (and other dumbass things like Dre “T.O.” Bly’s 25pt deficit showboat revue, don’t forget to tip your waitress). Manusky has done great things this season with Sing at the helm, and the D should pick it up vs Houston.
Well, at least we beat the Rams...
by corvette49rdave on Oct 11, 2009 9:27 PM PDT reply actions
You too can be a pessimist!
Jimmy Raye can only be as good as the players he has. I din’t see Raye under center, didn’t see him fumble, and he didn’t throw that ridiculous passer rating. Raye plays to our strengths, Vernon is having a career year and you can’t see that. Not calling him a savior, but you have to give him time based on his philosophy. If the offense can’t execute the simple parts of the offense why get into the more difficult, he adds a littl every week and has done fine. he’s far better than Martz with all those damn turnovers.
"Optimist Prime"
Come along and ride the muthaship!
Raye maybe a mess too
But, it’s Singletary’s ability to communicate with the defense. He’s the one firing them up he’s the one with the heart that motivates the defense. Manusky is the exact opposite.
How many sacks do the 49ers have this year? 10 sacks! That’s two a game. That’s an unacceptable number. Let’s look at it this way when half of your total amount of sacks come in one game, then there’s a problem and it starts with the coordinator.
The 49ers will not win against the good teams if they give the quarterback all day to throw! How many sacks did the 49ers have against Favre? The answer is two.
How many sacks did the 49ers have against Ryan? 0
So on average against the teams with a winning record there’s one sacks average! Really, that’s called good defense! I’ll give you a hint what seperates the 49ers from having an elite defense is exactly that! It’s exactly why Manusky needs to be fired!
There is absolutely no pressure on the quarterback being put on by the 49ers defense! Who’s fault is that? Manusky’s! 61 sacks in two full years, absolutely should have had him fired!
Manusky doesn’t even use Patrick Willis properly! How in the world can anyone defende Manusky! He is a terrible coordinator who needs to lose his job!
Look at the Bengals what’s the diference between them and the 49ers? They get after the quarterback they have a defesive player in Antwan Odom who nearly has as many sacks as the 49ers do.
What about the New York Giants the team has the same amount of sacks as the Bengals. They also force turnovers something that the 49ers do not do either.
There comes a point in time to take off the blinders in regards to Manusky. He’s garbage and needs to be throw to the curb!
Answer this then?
Are you happy with the 49ers pass rush over the last couple of years and this year? Aren’t you tired of the defense getting burned because the 49ers can’t even pressure the quarterback? It falls on Manusky’s scheme, there’s rarely any blitzes.
The most exciting plays against St. Louis was cutting Patrick Willis loose to go after Kyle Boller! Where was that in today’s game?
49ers have done a good job getting to the QB so far this year
Through the first 4 games of the season the 49ers had only allowed 3.11 yards per rush attempt (4th best in the NFL), they either sacked or intercepted the ball on 9.64% of the pass plays (10th best), and teams had only converted 35.94% of their 3rd down attempts (13th). They had a bad game against Atlanta, but they were a top ten defense through the 1st four games. Most young teams will have days when they struggle.
Don't trust this guy. He lies.
Try to get a grip on this concept
Whatever the defense was or wasn’t “the last couple of years” isn’t relevant. What the defense has been this year is. Which outside of the last week’s games it’s been pretty awesome.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

The D had an awful day, as did the entire team
It’s a sixteen game season. Give credit to Atlanta for executing a strong game plan. They had two weeks to rest and prepare and played like it. Our guys were a step slow across the board and hat their hat handed to them. It sucks but it happens, even to playoff teams. It’s no reason to fire anyone.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
let's not overreact or anything
I don’t love Manusky but let’s face it – until yesterday the defense has been very solid this season – and once again the offense constantly going 3 and out is clearly starting to put a strain on the D.
I do think Manusky could be more creative in the way he designs and utilizes blitzes and I don’t think the Niners probably do enough to confuse opposing teams (disguising the coverage, feigning a blitz and dropping back, etc); but Manusky has done a fine job.
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
