ALEX SMITH?
Hey, just a thought. If you don't remember, last year in Singletary's first game as our head coach he replaced J.T O' Sullivan at half time with Shaun Hill. Shaun Hill was never really the for sure starter coming into the year. And his competition Alex Smith once ran this 49ers offence, and ran it well. I really did think there was a chance that Smith would get some time in todays game when Hill could just not controll this offense. I aprove of Shaun Hill, and am skeptical about Alex Smith, but hey, anything can happen, and im not really sure whats next. What do you think?

If Hill plays as badly in the next game as he did in this one he should last about as long as JaMarcus Russell would without Al Davis.

You can't blame it all on him, true ...
… but you can’t drastically change the play of any other position by benching one player.

It's hard to bench someone with Hill's record...
But… I kind of thought, and was looking forward to, seeing Smith get in some minutes this game… As much as I like Hill’s record, our offense is terrible. I hope with Gore coming back, and maybe within a few more weeks of Crabtree getting into the system, that Hill will be more comfortable. My opinion, that by week 9 or 10, if we aren’t in first place and offense is struggling, that Smith should get a shot…. Opinions?

All things equal....
I couldn’t have possibly thought of any better situation to get your back up some playing time (other than being up by 35 in the fourth) and I really don’t understand how Smith didn’t see playing time last week. If the goal was to show that Hill is the leader to the team and lead by example, I would say FAIL. I believe that the only thing Hill did after mid 3rd quarter last week was shake his teams’ confidence in him, what with all the “tough” faces and stares he was kicking down. A few times the camera zoomed in on him bitching as he was walking up to take the snap. In fairness, this was really the first time we have seen him melt down but I think he should have been out of there to cools off, get Alex some snaps (especially with our line play last week, we may see him sooner than later) and see if there is some new chemistry. I think Sing was showing his confidence and trust in Hill as the starter, but I don’t think there would be a controversy from Alex taking 20-25 snaps. IMHO

Yes Hill will remain the starter but
I would prefer that Singletary get Nate Davis and Michael Crabtree and have them practice throwing together. That is our future and it makes no sense to delay it with Hill or Smith.

have to disagree--I think
like you, I looooove the fact that those two are getting to be friends. If college and the preseason is anything to go by, Davis has tremendous upside potential, and obviously Crabtree has the potential to be great. But count me among those who think it would be a terrible idea to put Davis out there before next season for any reason other than an injury.
Davis did not come out of a college system that ran a pro-style offense. He was in the shotgun much of the time and did a lot of running when his first read wasn’t open. Sound like anybody else on the roster at QB?
I think the team would be doing Davis wrong by not letting him ride the bench the rest of the year (under Mike Johnson’s tutelage) and going through another training camp, where he’ll get the kind of reps he needs to come in and contribute.
So I agree that the Davis—>Crabtree connection is the team’s future, but I would’ve expected a person with your sense of the team’s history to argue against giving Davis the same treatment that it gave to Smith.

i agreed with kezarvet
i thought thats what he meant because i dont think singletary would start davis after one bad game, and again it wasnt hills fault, the team looked like a frosh/soph team playing out there. next year he will be in for open competition unless hill can drive us to conference. i see smith goin to the redskins or the panthers next year.

dont give up on Hill
I think with the bye week and then playing a bad defense in Houston assuming we get Frank Gore and possibly Crabtree our offense will open up a bit more and Hill will have more targets to go to
I like Coffee but he is not yet close to as good as Gore and with Crabtree our pass game will get better with his presence and other teams will know he’s a threat so guys like Morgan and B Jones will have a better opportunity to make plays
it’s not time to panic lets wait and see what happens after the bye week against Houston

I remember reading that Coffee got chewed by Raye for trying to bounce plays outside.
Now it looks like he (Coffee) is going to run the play exactly as designed no matter what, he is afraid to improvise.

If
the offensive line would block somebody, it wouldn’t matter who was in there cause they’d actually have time to get it to a receiver (and not just a check down). On a few occasions today Chilo Rachal snuck past the defensive tackles making himself available for ascreen pass not realizing he was an OFFENSIVE GUARD! Matadors don’t have anything on our offensive line!

sucks. Period. Hindsight is 20-20. Should have drafted Aaron Rogers. Hill is just good enough not to single-handedly lose the game. Davis? No idea, buttime for finding out should be reserved for when we are in no position to make a run at the playoffs or when Hill gets broken in half, whichever comes first.

the way the Panthers are playing who knows? who is worse than them? I’d say the Raiders, Browns, and maybe Rams and I doubt the Raiders or Browns would draft a QB so hopefully the Panthers suck as much as the Rams but if the Rams finish with the worst record you’re right they’ll probably have Bradford

I think Davis could be a good starting QB if given the chance but if we were to draft a QB I would go with Sam Bradford he looks like another Matt Ryan but even though nobody thinks Tim Tebow will be good I dont see why he can’t he’s a natural born leader and IMO is the type of QB Mike Singletary would love

Ryan stayed in school for 5 years (redshirt freshman) and played mostly in a pro-style offense.
Bradford takes almost every single snap out of the shotgun and he’s still a junior.

Smith is not the answer
He can make those crucial intermediate depth (10-15 yards) throws that Hill can’t, but he needs even better pass protection to succeed, because he takes even longer than Hill to get rid of the ball.
Actually I wouldn’t be opposed to drafting two OL with our 1sts next year, and putting Smith back there again, but I’d rather just start fresh and draft a franchise QB.

If Hill does get benched
I pray they put in Nate Davis over Alex Smith. I do not want to see Smith run this offense again. We’ve seen that and it doesn’t work.
Davis has pocket presence, a great arm, ability to scramble, etc. While I don’t want to get him in there too soon, I would like to see him get some reps this year. He can be our future if we develop him right and get a decent O Line to protect him.
by mountaindew77 on Oct 12, 2009 12:39 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I'd rather lose the rest of the season,
than risk ruining Nate Davis by throwing him out there, before he’s ready, and with no protection. He’s the future. This season is just a corner turning year for the Niner’s. If we over-achieve: awesome. If not, oh well. Let’s not jeopardize the next five.
Besides: Hill had a bad game. The whole team did. It happens. Let’s see how they bounce back. No reason to start throwing everyone into the mulcher just because we’re dissapointed that we’re not quite the “Team of Destiny” that we were getting excited about.
by Krowley on Oct 12, 2009 5:00 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Agree with all of this ...
… Nate could be the future, but either way, there’s nothing to be gained in throwing him to the lions now. If we do, it’ll be history repeating itself when a desperate franchise threw Alex Smith in before his time and arguably ruined him. I could see the same thing happening with Stafford in Detroit – already with him, the little niggling injuries are starting to keep him out of games. You could imagine him becoming an Alex Smith.
They need to stick with Hill this season. He had one disastrous game – as Krowley says. The other games he’s been unspectacular but not a liability. i reckon Singletary knows that chopping and changing demonstrates a weakness of mind, and I believe he’ll get Hill back round again. Smith is a serviceable back-up, and Davis is a good youngster to school as a project. And we will have some good options around the next draft, even in spite of the Panthers finally winning.

My usual stance on predicting the draft still stands (i.e. I don’t like to specify names a whole season before the draft), but I wouldn’t be wholly opposed to taking a QB high. If they DO do it, though, I can only hope they do it because they truly believe the guy was worth it, and not just because they feel like they need a QB. I agree both lines and, in my opinion, the secondary and pass rush, can use a lot of help with those higher picks (four in the first three rounds).

I'm getting really sick of Shaun Hill
I think we did the right thing naming him the starter. I think he did enough last season to earn it. Clearly Smith didn’t do anything to prove that assumption wrong in the preseason. Yes, Hill is a “winner,” he plays well in the clutch, he has “moxie” etc. But I’m starting to feel like all these intangibles are all that Hill has and the problem is that those things are by definition not tangible. Which also means they aren’t helping us win games. Anymore. He was downright awful yesterday – clearly all the blame can’t fall on him but let’s face it – he will never be more than an average QB at BEST.
Watch a really good QB play (i.e. watch Peyton Manning last night). What do great QBs do? They are accurate passing the ball, they read the defense and don’t stare down their only read on every throw, they move intelligently in the pocket to avoid pressure.
Hill? Inaccurate. Looks at his receiver from the moment the ball is snapped and doesn’t seem to go through a progression. Always backpedals whenever there is pressure and runs into sacks.
Now I’m not saying we should bench him and put Smith in right away. But I do think we need to realize that we aren’t going to have a great offense with him, ever. Maybe not even a good offense. Smith still has a lot to prove but I think over time he might give us a better chance. I would have liked to see him play in garbage time yesterday.
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.

I definitely have fallen off the “ALEX SMITH FOR PRESIDENT” bandwagon, but it definitely would have been nice to see him garbage time yesterday. I’m not as sure anymore that Smith has what it takes to be an NFL QB, but I don’t think it would have hurt to throw him out there toward the end of the game.
