Singletary Faces Major Decisions

Falcons vs 49ers boxscoreAfter being just two seconds away from an undefeated 4-0 start, the 49ers came crashing to earth on Sunday as the Atlanta Falcons humiliated them 45-10 at Candlestick Park. For the first time this season, we were able to see what an outstanding job Mike Singletary has done to date with a team whose weaknesses were exposed for all to see.

Now facing a bye week ahead, and with the prospect of both the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks returning to form, Mike Singletary is faced with some major decisions. On the defensive side of the ball, the 49ers are sound and talented. Manny Lawson has been inconsistent, and the secondary has had its good and bad moments, but the unit as a whole is among the league's upper echelon. Patrick Willis and Takeo Spikes have been sensational, and Justin Smith and Isaac Sopoaga have been staunch against the run.

Aubrayo Franklin, after an excellent start to the season, had a terrible game yesterday, and Dre Bly should be cut. His hot dog performance and insistence that "Dre does what Dre does", proves that he is an individual playing on a team and there is no room for that kind of childish behavior on a winning TEAM, With just a few adjustments, the defense will remain solid.

THE TEAM UNDER REVIEW
The fly in the ointment for the 49ers is the offense. That they have been able to go 3-2 with Jimmy Raye's plain vanilla offense is remarkable, but it's time to play PROFESSIONAL football and this offensive scheme may be fine for a Pop Warner league team lacking a good QB, but it has no place in the NFL.

Let's pick the offense apart. First, the offensive line is just that -- offensive. To say that Shaun Hill has little or no time to pass is an understatement. Eric Heitmann and Joe Staley have been adequate, but the guard play of David Baas and Chilo Rachal has been very disappointing. Right tackle has been inconsistent with Snyder and Pashos both having mediocre performances. Elevating Alex Boone from the practice squad may be a good move as he will be a future starter and needs to get some reps.

At wide receiver, it is obvious that the Niners lack a breakaway man like they faced in Roddy White of Atlanta. Josh Morgan has disappointed, not only because he dropped a certain TD pass vs. the Rams, then made the excuse that the ball was "coming down like a punt", but because yesterday he was not running full out in an attempt to catch a pass. Anything less than 100% effort is unacceptable.

Brandon Jones has yet to set foot on the field and Jason Hill is apparently in somebody's doghouse but gives great effort on special teams and is, in my estimation, the best wide receiver we have active at this time. Arnaz Battle has never been great, and Isaac Bruce is ready for Social Security and shows it. The best receivers right now are the Tight Ends, Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker.

THE FORK IN THE ROAD -- SINGLETARY'S MOMENT OF DECISION
As someone who shares a birthdate with Singletary, I have insight into his thought processes. He's a Libra to whom balance is essential in life. Mike can see both sides of a situation and is motivated by fairness and discipline. His decisions are always made with the best interest of his team in mind and he will make sacrifices to see that his goals are met.

Now the 49ers are at a fork in the road. They are moving in the right direction with the Playoffs and eventually the Super Bowl as the goal. Yesterday's blowout exposed the weaknesses, and unfortunately, the biggest weakness is at QB. I love Shaun Hill. He is a leader, determined, and excellent game manager, and tough. However, he does not possess the passing skills to take an NFL team to a title. That fact became obvious to me yesterday for the first time. I wanted him to succeed badly, but he just doesn't have "it", and "it" is what is needed at the position to take the Niners to the next level. Continuing with Hill as our starting QB is only delaying the development of this team.

Mike is now faced with a dilemma. Shaun Hill is a serviceable quarterback, an excellent game manager, a fairly accurate passer with a soft arm, and a leader. Alex Smith came to the 49ers with great physical ability but no natural instincts for the position. Alex continues to take way too long to set up and deliver the ball. He makes very slow decisions which results in a very slow delivery. His passing is scattershot at best and while he has a strong arm, he is and continues to be very inaccurate. The game has never slowed down for Alex. He will NEVER be a top quarterback for the 49ers.

THE CRABTREE CONNECTION
As we enter the Bye week, the future of our receiving corps has come to camp. Michael Crabtree, if he is anywhere near as good as expected, will bring the excitement and explosiveness to the receiving corps that is needed. With Jones returning from injury and Jason Hill and Morgan ready to go, and with the return of Frank Gore, this offense should be ready to reduce the vanilla bean running scheme and go to the air with effectiveness.

Enter Nate Davis. In two preseason games he has demonstrated a rocket arm, and makes plays that the other two guys simply cannot; he is mobile and can make throws on the run the others cannot, and he makes excellent decisions. I don't care that he has only faced backups -- his ability is right there for all to see.

Most important of all is his poise. In four years, Alex Smith has continually shown that deer-in-the-headlights quality that frustrates 49er fans. Many blame his failure to excel at QB on the 49ers. They say he has been ruined by them due to having too many offensive coordinators, a poor supporting cast, etc. I say that is baloney (bologna to my Italian readers). In reading the forums and comments of many of the newer and younger 49er fans who don't even have a clue as to our winning tradition, beg and plead not to rush Davis into the fray and ruin him like we did Alex. I read comments saying he's our QB for 2010, 2011, and even 2012.

Why wait? Do the names Flacco, Ryan or Roethlisberger ring a bell? All were highly successful in their rookie season.

If I were Mike Singletary, I would get Nate Davis and Michael Crabtree together and have them start working on their chemistry right now during the bye week. They are the touchdown combination of the future for the 49ers and it makes no sense to finish this season with either Hill or Smith since neither is the future of the 49ers.

I am now in my 64th season as a 49er fan, having seen every quarterback in Niner history from the great Frankie Albert up to not so great Alex Smith, and consider myself to be a pretty good judge of quarterbacking talent. Nate Davis possesses the most talent and ability to be seen in a 49er quarterback since Steve Young. It makes no sense to hold him back. The only way he is going to develop that talent is to PLAY. We discovered a gem, let's polish it and put it on display. It is time!

NATE THE "GREAT" DAVIS

I was reading a comment from someone on here about that we need to draft a franchise QB next draft and do we really want to put our stock into a 5th round pick for the 49ers future. This guy must be from another planet, does he think 1st round picks is the only way to go….your comment about Ben and Joe makes so much sense and how about Brady, when was he picked, duh. You have an outstanding point and I back you all the way, I love NATE. Even if he played against 2nd teamers, he still made the throws, every possible throw you need to throw in the NFL and to be a hall of FAMER. I want NATE in there so bad I can taste it. So we may not make it deep into the playoffs he is OURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR FUTUREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and our future is NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

I KNOW MY 49ERS AND CAN SEE TALENT WHEN IT IS IN FRONT OF ME.. NOW I HAVEN’T BEEN AROUND AS LONG AS YOU BUT FROM 1968 WHEN i WAS 10 YEARS OLD I BECAME A FAN OF THE BEST FRANCHISE IN THE NFL, CUT AND DRY.

lol what the hell

So this whole post was building up to a ‘bench Hill play Nate’ poll? Sorry man, can’t do it while we are still in the driver’s seat for the division title. Hill might not be the answer, but he’s also not our biggest problem and frankly it’s a chicken/egg situation with our OL and Raye’s play calling, and it’s all related anyhow.

Bottom line, this team is way too broken on offense for me to feel comfortable with putting Nate out there and watching him get hammered repeatedly and possibly ruin his career before it even starts. We saw it just a few years ago with Smith’s rookie year. And it’s not like we have a Steelers/Ravens caliber of defense to salvage wins for us at the same time either.

Maybe next year.

you cant just throw the guy in and have him take a ton of sacks while hes trying to figure out his reads etc.

agreed to a point

if however, the season goes into the crapper late, then, I say, we put Davis in, let him gain experience, he is the future more so than Alex or Shaun.

Davis

I do think Nate Davis could be a long term answer (potentially, obviously no guarantees in any sense), but I also know he looked good in the preseason against 3rd and 4th string defenses. Sure it’s encouraging and a reason to be at least a little excited for the future, but to throw him in after one ugly game is a bad idea.

+1

How would he be promoted to starter when he’s our #3. He’s not going to leap frog over Alex Smith. As much as we’d all like to see that happen, it’s just not reality.

Davis is clearly a superior passer

and the QB of the future. Why delay the inevitable? Let’s put Davis and Crabtree together now, let them develop the chemistry now, so next season we will be serious Super Bowl contenders. The experience they gain together this season will be invaluable. Nobody ever improved sitting on the bench and watching less talented men perform.

I agree on Davis being the future.. or at least a very possible QB future for the 49ers.

BUT, the Niners have to fix the OL problems first. Ryan, Flacco and Roethlisberger all had good or better OLs in front of them.

If you watched the game yesterday, or Defense couldn’t get to Ryan… mostly because they have a good OL. One the Niners fix the OL then I am all for bring Nate in to start and learn on the job.

Nate Davis

He is good but still young. But remember that it’s not the QB that’s the problem. As long as Jimmy Raye is OC, he’ll continue to be the bad talent evaluator that he is and put the worse catching WRs on the field. Morgan’s out there because he’s a good blocking WR. He can’t get separation off a CB at all. Bruce (thank goodness) will be gone next year. He’s here simply because he’s a vet. It bugs me, though, when he misses balls, doesn’t hustle at times, and plays without heart (or so it seems). Battle will be gone next year too. That leaves us with Hill, Morgan, Jones, Crabtree, and maybe Zeigler. I believe agree with you, kezarvet, that Jason Hill is the best WR the team currently has active. He runs a 4.3 and actually knows how to get open. I really want him to shine in the upcoming weeks. I believe that for the future, the ideal situation for our starting WRs is to start Hill and Morgan and put Crabtree in the slot. Using 3-WR packages can come in handy for the Forty Niners. If only they had an O-line that could pass-block…

This is the EXACT same logic fans had for playing Alex Smith in his rookie year. Apparently you don’t remember how that worked out?

Nobody ever improved sitting on the bench and watching less talented men perform.

Try telling that to Aaron Rodgers. Singular case, I know, but there’s very little doubt he gained quite a bit sitting and watching.

by sfgfan on Oct 12, 2009 10:24 AM PDT up reply actions

My mistake with the Rodgers example.

I missed the “less talented men” part. I still disagree that Davis can’t learn from just watching the game unfold in general. You learn a lot from anyone’s mistakes, not just your own. That’s why the teach history.

by sfgfan on Oct 12, 2009 10:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Not as best I can remember...

I think he was actually one of the better USFL guys. Not saying too much there, though. Bobby Hebert was a god in the USFL. After the USFL folded, Young went to Tampa Bay, with an offense depressingly similar to San Francisco’s current offense, and sank without a trace. Tampa Bay traded Young to the 49ers, and most of the rest is highlight reels.

Davis hasn't had enough reps with the offense

This is PROFESSIONAL Football, and thaat would be stupid to start a guy that hasn’t had 25 percent of the reps. Smith would start before Davis. We are 3-2, and when Hill was making drives to get us in the position to sin Raye was the problem. Now it’s Hill? That’s BS. Funny how the best WR IYO is a player that can’t get on the field!

Are you serious?? and let him get eaten alive by linemen?? u must really dislike davis if you want to throw him in to one of the worst offensive lines in the nfl. The kid wouldnt survive a game, do you want another alex smith?? remember how he got injured right..a sack allowed by our oline and that was a much better oline back then than it is now..You guys are really missing the point here, shaun his is very capable of making throws and making plays, not like superstar plays but he can make them..its not shaun hill thats at fault its the oline..

I Support it !

Let’s face it; Shaun Hill will not win a super bowl for us so winning the division won’t matter. I say lets see what we have in Nate (how tuff he is etc.) so that way we know whether or not to use a 1st round draft pick on a quarter back in 2010. Especially if we really have given up on Alex Smith, who given real guidance from a quality offensive coordinator could flourish (per the season he had with Norv turner – a great quarter back coach). Which spawns the question should we get rid of Jimmy Rae and the O-line coach? I’m just saying.

by Fan_since_75 on Oct 12, 2009 8:48 AM PDT reply actions

First off we need to fix the o line before we even think of put Davis or any other rookie in there and fixing that problem will give who ever is back to be able to make throws. You can’t blame everything on hill when he has no time. Also yeah Davis could be the future but I wouldn’t start him right now.

by 49erSalvatrucha on Oct 12, 2009 8:51 AM PDT reply actions

Maybe if we're 3-5 in 4 weeks

I could see this being a possibility. But right now I don’t think you do it. You risk losing your team and it goes against everything Singletary is trying to teach the team.

Its not about the individual (davis getting reps), its not about talent (davis throws better), its about team (hill is our best option) and what is best for the team moving forward (experienced, mature signal-caller)…

I don’t want to see Davis on the field, outside of a blowouts we’re winning, until week 12-13 at the earliest. I just don’t want him thrown to the wolves. For every Flacco, Ryan and Big Ben there are a hundred Leaf’s, Akili Smith’s, etc. Its a trend for a reason and its news for a reason, those guys bucked the trend. Davis has the best talent at the QB position, but QB is as much about being cerebral as it is about being talented.

Seasons Not Over Just Yet

I am not going to say that just yet! I do believe that we have to get the O Line improved for our difficult schedule ahead. Yes our defense messed up, but all around the team played there worst game. Plus we are missing 2 of our franchise players. Nate Davis is the future and by learning from this year he will be ready to put in his bid for the starter or second string. He needs to learn this year cause he can see what and what no to do. Players need to step up or they will not be on this team next year. I am sure we got to get this O Line fix.

You don’t throw a young QB in there because the guy ahead of him is flailing around like a spastic monkey.

The OL is the best reason NOT to start Davis.

Not even Joe Montana could survive this offensive line. Poor Shaun Hill doesn’t even have the time to take a frickin’ 3-step drop before somebody is on him. They had to go to the shotgun to get him any time at all. And when your QB gets sacked by a 3-man pass rush – not just once, but twice, it makes no sense at all to sacrifice another QB just because the current one can’t play well with no OL.

The problem with the offense is the OL and nothing else but an improvement in this unit will help. With even a mediocre OL, Hill would be doing much better. Nate Davis needs to sit, learn, and adapt to the NFL game while the OL gets straightened out.

i put this in one of my other post

but Nate Davis doesn’t even know the entire play book. Wasn’t Raye quoted as saying “oh my god” when asked what it would take to get nate davis starting ready? Remember that it takes him a little longer to learn the schemes and all. But if you think our play calling is bad now imagine what it would be like with Nate at the helm.

He is not ready yet

Nate Davis preseason highlight reel

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkRIYba7hdg

NO I DO NOT WANT HIM TO START.

I’m posting this more for the people who think we should be drafting a high first round QB next year, instead of addressing a lot of other needs. i don’t think we are a QB let alone 1 position away from a super bowl.

I’m all for drafting Eric Berry especially now that Michael Lewis is probably not in our plan next year. and picking up lineman. i think we have a very young team and few positions that need to be replaced.

If we can work on Nate Davis and get him a line that doesn’t put him on the move every down i think he will do what we need.

Watching this film i know he is playing against people who probably aren’t even in the NFL anymore. but I’m more surprised by his presence he has a player in his face every down almost and still manages to scramble and best of all has the arm to get the throws off on the run, or just stand in the pocket and take the hit.

I’m fine with hill finishing out the season i just know that Nate Davis can do things that hill will never be able to do.

I would be worried he’d be gone by the time we get him and think we should see if we can address the SS position in FA just to be sure it’s handled.

Taylor Mays?

How come no one mentions Taylor Mays on here? Yeah Eric Berry seems to be legit, but so does Taylor Mays…and he seems more gettable. Berry is likely top 2or 3 off the board (…big time speculation at this point).

USC produces great defenders. Pete Carroll is a defensive minded coach and it shows by how many quality defensive players he has produced during his tenure at USC….Polamalu, Tatupu, Rivers, Malaluga…to name a few. Mays is a good enough hitter to play SS…i think he’s probably more suited to play SS than FS.

I mean really…have you seen this guy play??? Seems like Coach Sing would love a guy like this…

hit people in the mouth!

just think of that guy backing up Pat Willis….i’d double dare Ochocinco to go over the middle!

Mays...

… is more of a SS. I’m not going to speak for everyone else, but in my opinion, a SS is not worth a high first round pick.

by sfgfan on Oct 12, 2009 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree to a degree

Mays is more of a hitting, defensive enforcer type who might actually be there when the panthers pick comes up. I would be happy if the 49ers drafted Mays…Berry is just the bigger playmaker, and would make me happier.

Unless Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy are there for the Niners, dont expect a QB untill the 2nd-4th round, at least thats what i see happening. I believe this defense is lacking a playmaker in the Secondary, and the weakest part of this defense is the safety position (followed closely by the pass rush).

by Beatclash on Oct 12, 2009 3:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I believe this defense is lacking a playmaker in the Secondary…

I do agree the team is missing a playmaker in the secondary, but I don’t necessarily think a SS is a playmaker. Mays, so far, seems to definitely be more of a SS. From what I understand, Berry is leaning toward that direction, too.

Of course, a lot can change between now and the draft, so I don’t like speaking specific names. I wish the draft would fall in a way that one of the draft’s elite pass rushers falls to the 49ers, making the discussion for a safety rather moot.

From all the research I’ve done Berry is a Palomalu/Sanders type..

While Mays is the reincarnation of Ronnie Lott.

Neither one would I be upset about. Berry would help cover the field and be all over the place like Willis.

Mays would shrink the field because WR won’t want to cross his space.

it’s a win win for me.

I disagree...

… the the Mays comparison to Lott. Maybe in hit power, but people must be forgetting that Lott actually started off his career as a corner, meaning he can actually play in coverage. My understanding is that Mays has a difficult time with that aspect of the game.

If anything, Berry’s closer to Lott than Mays is.

SS is not a position to draft high

That’s what every team said that passed on Reed, Atogwe, Palomalu, and Griffin. How many of those teams would go back and change their minds. Berry is the BEST COMPLETE safety in this draft. Mays can hit, but can he man cover? Berry can, and he can hit too, just ask Moreno. Also if a SS is drafted that high he still getting SS money and not LT, WR, DT, or QB money. If Berry is passed on that will be the biggest mistake!

I watched

the Tennessee vs. Auburn game because I wanted to see what all the hype was about Berry; and I don’t know if he just had a bad game, but I didn’t see anything special that game. Maybe it was just a fluke though and I should watch another game (perhaps against #2 Alabama) to wait to come to my conclusion about him.

Berry may be there when we pick based on the performance of the Panthers.

Who are the worst teams in the league- Chiefs need a LT badly, Browns need a QB, Rams need a QB, Titans have Griffin, Seahawks may need Berry, but the Lions need an O-Line and Most teams who are bottom feeders in the league need lineman and QB’s

That’s why they took a TE over M. Oher (a dumb move, but Pettigrew was higher on their board).

Watched the preseason clips

And after watching that I am glad I voted Yes in the above poll…He has a feel for when the pocket is collapsing and moves to get out of the pocket. He is comfortable enough and has a strong arm to be on the move.

He does have some problems with the short, touch pass for the screen plays, but that could have been the rookie RB’s during the preseason…who knows…

I think he looked great in all those passes…sure I get that he faced 2-4th stringers, but he has the qualities, which is something we cannot say about Hill…I feel so strongly against Hill i would even give Smith another shot.

Nate Davis

should brought along by this point enouph to get considered if we con tinue to be horrible with our air attack. I think when Gore is back in the line up, our running game will enable us to be more efficient when passing. Hill simply isn’t the type of QB that is going to throw us out of a 21 point defacit. He hasn’t thrown for over three hundred yards in his life to my knowledge. Not in the pro’s at least. We need that type of QB. We have a good group of WRs. We have an excellent RB, and we have a sub-par game managing QB. I believe we have to stick with our guns with Hill this season. Win or lose, he’s our man right now. If we beat Minnesota, and remained focused for Atlanta he wouldn’t look so bad right now. I do believe our lack luster offense is what made our defense look so horrible…Peace…Stelf Bombz

by STELF BOMBZ on Oct 12, 2009 2:18 PM PDT reply actions

on offense obviously our players that are hurting i would really agree are O line and QB but at the same time those two go hand and hand… hell i watched that green bay game and that O line is TERRIBLE!

i think he got sacked like 9 times or something like that and i know rodgers is a good QB but how can you win a game when your running around like that, or should i say on your back… all i’m saying is things could be worse.

by whitemike1644 on Oct 12, 2009 2:32 PM PDT reply actions

lets put it this way you think tom brady or peyton could get anything done behind green bays line???

and for that matter look at the good QB’s in the game right now they have about 4-6 seconds on most down… hill has like 2-4 before he gets hit.

by whitemike1644 on Oct 12, 2009 2:34 PM PDT reply actions

Too Soon.

Davis is never going to see a snap this season. Its just not gonna happen.

Alex Smith is gone next season (it pains me to finally give up on Smith =/…), Shaun Hill is (maybe?) still the starting QB. Davis will have his shot next season. But ofcourse this all depends on how the draft turns out…i dont see the 49ers NOT drafting a QB before the 5th round….but then again i thought it was impossible for the Niners to not come out of the past draft with a tackle…they clearly proved me wrong.

by Beatclash on Oct 12, 2009 2:55 PM PDT reply actions

Smith

Unless the 49ers draft another QB, I don’t see Smith going away next season.

by sfgfan on Oct 12, 2009 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I see a QB being drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round.

But ofcourse this all depends on whos available when the picks come up. Singletary and Scott M. have showed they are all about value when it coems to the draft when they traded for the panthers pick.

by Beatclash on Oct 12, 2009 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions

We'll see

I can see your point and maybe in the 3rd. My personal choice would be to get with the two 1sts a NT and an RT then with the second an OG, then 3rd maybe a QB or maybe a SS (we will need an SS most probably right? I mean Lewis is probably gone either of his choosing or the doctors.)

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Oct 12, 2009 3:14 PM PDT up reply actions

With how the draft is looking right now

I would love a NT or a Safety with one of the 1st rounders as well. Upgrades at either of those positions would make this defense so much better. NT would improve the pass rush, Safety would improve turnovers.

The mid rounds are going to be flooded with lineman. A tackle in the first 3 rounds, and a guard somewhere in the 4th or 5th. I think the guard issue will work itself out in free agency though, but a young one in the draft cant hurt.

by Beatclash on Oct 12, 2009 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions

NT would improve the pass rush...which..

would improve the secondary. It has been said numerous times by men smarter than certainly me (I’m not that smart but you guys know that LOL) that a strong front line can help a secondary immensely and the best secondary with a weak front line is going to suffer serious shortcomings.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Oct 12, 2009 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Roman sucks and Goldson doesnt appear to ball hawk.

Look at the Steelers, they get the pressure but it’s coming too late and that secondary looks like crap without Troy. The Lions almost outscored them.

I think that...

Dashon Goldson hasn’t done anything wrong. Mark Roman will do many things wrong with Lewis out.

Different sets of skills

I actually think Roman fits at SS, mentally. The way he plays is the way a SS should play. The only problem I have with him at SS is his size, or lack thereof.

by sfgfan on Oct 13, 2009 9:22 AM PDT up reply actions

Well it looks like Lewis is done

I think if he does play he isn’t going to be in our long term picture, and I can’t handle a future which involves Roman starting.

by whitemike1644 on Oct 12, 2009 11:27 PM PDT up reply actions

With Lewis where he is now, expect a safety picked EARLY next year.

I always figured Lewis would have another 2-3 years in him. But that looks like a longshot now. And Goldson is nothing more then support really…his playmaking potential looks alot better then Mark Romans, but thats not saying much. Hes still very unproven in my mind. If this defense is going to stay top tier next year, its going to need a safety upgrade. I really doubt Curtis Taylor or Reggie Smith are going to rise up and be an all-pro safety.

by Beatclash on Oct 13, 2009 12:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Its the O-line

If the offensive O-line was playing well than we wouldn’t have this discussion. I like Nate Davis but it is too early to throw him in. Shaun Hill can do a decent job IF the O-line was playing much better. Hill doesn’t have any time to make any reads. He is being pressured right away. This is the same thing as last year except less turnovers. If Shaun Hill had the Giants O-line and he would look so much better.

Nate Davis is the quarterback of the future--and the future is not yet

Kezarvet, I posted this on another fanpost, but perhaps you’ll see it here.
Like you, I looooove the fact that Davis and Crabtree are getting to be friends. If college and the preseason is anything to go by, Davis has tremendous upside potential, and obviously Crabtree has the potential to be great. But count me among those who think it would be a terrible idea to put Davis out there before next season for any reason other than an injury.
Davis did not come out of a college system that ran a pro-style offense. He was in the shotgun much of the time and did a lot of running when his first read wasn’t open. Sound like anybody else on the roster at QB?
I think the team would be doing Davis wrong by not letting him ride the bench the rest of the year (under Mike Johnson’s tutelage) and going through another training camp, where he’ll get the kind of reps he needs to come in and contribute.
So I agree that the Davis—>Crabtree connection is the team’s future. But chemistry can be developed in places other than in the heat of battle with NFL defenses firing live bullets. Chemistry involves some trial and error—and with two rookies you’re going to have more error than with experienced players.
I would’ve expected a person with your sense of the team’s history to argue against giving Davis the same treatment that it gave to Smith.

Davis has the natural instincts

that Alex will never have. Alex was just a kid when he came up and was totally unprepared. Although Davis is only 22, he has poise and confidence well beyond his years. His older brother played QB in the Arena League, and Nate is an amazing athlete who could play in the NBA, Riding the bench doesn’t do anyone any good. During Montana’s rookie season, he rode the pines behind DeBerg, but Walsh would insert him in some games in the second half with pre-designed plays that he knew would help his confidence. Singletary could do the same with Davis.

I am with the coaches

Singletary laughed at a reporter for suggestion what you are. I think there has to be a reason for the laugh. Don’t you?

Calling for Davis would be like Redskins fans calling for Colt Brennan when he’s the #3 guy. Davis is the 3rd string QB and I think at best he’s gonna be #2 next year. If Hill screws up really bad for the next 3 or 4 games, then Alex Smith (God forbid) will be his relief.

I think that the only chance that Davis gets in this year is if Hill and Smith get hurt…and with our O-line, that’s quite a possibilty; which leads me to beleive that if Davis came in now, you’d be doing the same thing you did to Alex Smith as a rookie…confidence wise. Davis may not even be the guy of the future if the NIners draft a QB in the first 2 rounds….maybe even later. There’s always a chance that we get a guy even better. You mentioned DeBerg and Montana above. There is a possibility of Davis being equivelant to a Deberg and another guy being a Montana-like (franchise) type of guy.

Like I said before, it’s waaaayyyy premature after one preseason to be saying that Davis is our “future”… that’s thinking very blindly.

really?

Nate is an amazing athlete who could play in the NBA
At 6’2" and with a 5.0 40yd dash, he’s hardly got the skill set to be an NBA player. I think this ‘modest proposal’ (“he rode the pines behind DeBerg, but Walsh would insert him in some games in the second half with pre-designed plays”) makes more sense than Davis as the full time starter (which is what it seems like you’re suggesting elsewhere). But do you really think that “riding the bench doesn’t do anyone any good”? Didn’t it do Aaron Rodgers some good? Isn’t there a pretty serious transition from a college spread attack to a pro-style run-heavy offense? Isn’t chemistry developed on the practice field vital to game-day success? And how do you judge that Davis has these ‘natural instincts’ you speak about?

Morgan breaks through in 2009!

by grantmp on Oct 13, 2009 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

I think you permantley ruin Davis’ career if you stick him out there now. If we had a better O-line, I wouldn’t totally negate the idea…but I still wouldn’t promote it either. there’s a learning curve in the transition from college to the NFL unless (like you said) you come from a pro-style offense. Davis didn’t. Guys like Ryan (Boston College), Stafford (Georgia), and Sanchez (USC), all pro-style offenses. Ball State is not a pro-style offense.

by Drew Kerr on Oct 13, 2009 10:46 AM PDT up reply actions

My view

1. Cut Dre being Dre, I have bought into the team concept and Dre isn’t a team player. I almost puked when he did his thing after the INT.

2. OL coach has got to go, we can’t dump the offensive cord. just yet. Hill has no time to do anything. I wanted Nate at the beginning, I even made a prediction that he would be the starter before the second half of the season. But I have liked what I have seen so far, when Hill has time to look for a reciever to open, plus he is tough.

3. It is time for Mike Singletary to jump in our tight ends ass again. Anyone else see the 3 balls thrown to him, and he went the wrong direction. What does he need, telling him every time, three steps, look for the ball. He needs his head pulled from his arse again. Realize whats going on with the QB and give him some help.

4. Issac Bruce needs some HGH or a new incentive in his contract, to start moving his ass. This is a young mans game. Pick it up or retire. I agree with playing Hill, He was exciting at the end of last year.

by dkb1962 on Oct 13, 2009 1:31 PM PDT reply actions

Bruce

I love the guy. But he is too damn slow now. And he lacks the explosiveness we need in a reciever. Ever notice he will drop or manuerver to the ground instead of taking a hit for extra yards? I’ve seen him do it several times this year. A couple times just short of the first down. He also gets caught from behind a lot. However, he is still a decent route runner.
We need to look for a qb down the road. For now Hill is fine. But whoever we get will need better pass protection. Obviously Gore will benefit as well with some better blocking.
