Why a trade for Shawne Merriman makes sense.

I think I heard on espn recently that the Chargers were thinking about trading Shawne Merriman.  Needless to say, he has thourougly dissapointed this year, coming back from injury.  It wasn't long ago, he was the best outside rusher in the league.  I know he has had some injury issues recently, but if he could be heck, maybe 80% of the player he was, I think we should trade for him.  Merriman has done absolutely nothing this season, but in 2006, he has 17 sacks in 12 games.  If my math is right, that's almost 23 sacks in 16 games.

I know it would be risky, but our OLB's haven't exactly excited thus far.  Manny Lawson has one sack, and Parys Haralson has one sack.  Now I know we have been getting a good amount of sacks, and it has been spread out among everyone, but OLB's in the 3-4 are supposed to get sacks.

After the jump I will give reasons why we should trade for him.

Star-divide

1.)  We need OLB rush help.  Of course, he wouldn't play every down, he would be a situational player, unless he continues to suck as bad as he does in San Diego.

2.) He is owed 2.2 Million this year from his contract.  That isn't a lot of money for the amount of potential he has.  It's a pretty low risk/ high reward scenario.

3.) If he does suck, this is the last year of his contract, and we could just let him walk, but if he does show signs of his old selff, imagine having him and Bam Bam for 8-10 years.  That's a pretty good LB combination.

4.) We wouldn't need to draft one next year in the draft.  The draft is a crapshoot.  I would rather take my chances with a hurt Shawne Merriman, then with someone who has never proven anything in the NFL.

5.) We wouldn't need to get rid of much to get him.  I'm thinking like a mid-round pick, maybe like a 3 and 7.  I don't know, I'm just throwing out numbers.  Again, if he could give us half the production he had in 06, that's over 10 sacks a year.

6.) He's only 25.  I have no doubts he can heal completely and be the dominant force he was.  If he was closer to 30, I wouldn't. but he is still fairly young.

It would be awesome to get a talent like Merriman, and don't think we will.  It's still fun to dream, right?

This only makes sense if we can acquire him for a player or a draft pick from 2011.

Either way it would have to be cheap due to his injury. Hopefully niners brass at least takes a look.

have you seen him play lately???

he is horrible. slow can’t move side to side… never been good in coverage. i would rather stay with parys and brooks.

he has 3 solo in one game and in the other 3 games 5 assisted. 0 sacks.

that knee isn’t ok… maybe next year he will be fully recovered but don’t expect much from him this year. but if we could get him for cheap and hope he is full speed next year i’m all for it.

but it could also be because the defense as a whole is playing like CRAP!

That's what happens when you stop taking 'roids.

My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.

Hes a loooong way from being the player he used to be right now.

It just wouldnt be worth the price. The Chargers wouldnt let him go cheaply, and as of right now, both of our 1st round picks are more valuable then him. IMO.

i wouldn’t be upset with trying to get him for late round picks because AJ smith doesn’t like to resign players.

agreed

merriman for a 4th or 5th rounder sounds good right? i mean a 4th rounder has a slim probability of panning out anyway.

yea i just remembered

the chargers lost jamal williams and his back up so they are running a 3-4 with a 3rd string DT.

thats sounds pretty rough.

He's recovering from 2 horrible injuries

I don’t see how a guy with 2 bad knees is ever going to play near that speed again.

Yeah but two steps slower and he's as good or better than any OLB we have.

He hasn’t recovered, so he should be really cheap. Then he’ll be cheap to resign. I’d put him on ST’s so he could get healthy, but on ly if he is very cheap he is still fairly young

But not both knees at the same time.

by bignerd on Oct 12, 2009 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What's the difference. It's still a hard njury to recover from.

Yet you can recover from it! I’m just saying he can come cheap now and next contract. It’s just a thought is all. Say we get him for a 3rd and a 5th NOW and he has 12 sacks next year is that a bad move? Say he doesn’t get that many sacks and becomes a pro bowl STeamer? Is it worth a 3rd and a 5th?

MCL and ACL?

He really screwed it up huh?

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Maybe we should wait for free agency

Uh.

Apparently you didn’t see Sunday’s game? At least early in the game, I saw an offense that was fighting and a defense that was just flat out FLAT.

No pressure from the NT and inconsitent pressure from the DL!

A recurring theme...

… if you ask me.

I think the 49ers definitely need help in all aspects of the team (even special teams now that Rossum is gone). The defense definitely is the strongest of the three units, but anyone who believes it doesn’t need help is delusional.

I’m not all “THE SKY IS FALLING” like a lot of people on the site, but the 49ers weaknesses have no been exposed, and while a lot of it had to do with the coaches poorly preparing their players, the players themselves aren’t much to write home about.

No kidding, we need DB's as mmcuh as OL

Yep OL, DL, DB

YOu got it Lott my friend. But that doesn’t exactly spell doom as some others have been trying to call for around here does it? It also doesn’t spell knee jerk reactions like “bench Hill and put the rookie in!” or “let’s get TO or Merriman…etc.” . The team will have a spitload of money available and there are some good fill ins in FA and some good possibilities in the Draft as we all have mentioned. No this does not give us a quick fix for this year but I’m not sure that we can do that without damaging the position going forward.

Just my 1/2 cent

Its not a rumor.

He already tested positive that year he went off.

If he is juicing now, he might want to switch suppliers because its not helping.
