Matt Maiocco (via Twitter) reporting Kory Sheets may have been picked up by the Dolphins, saying his goodbyes to the rest of the team.

Kind of a bummer, given how Kory's name was sure to pop up among most of our discussions about the offense.

WHAT THE ?

WHY DID WE LET KORY SHEETS AND BRIT MILLER GO ? THEY WERE BOTH AMAZING AND PLAYMAKERS FOR OUR FUTURE.M I THINK THE MAFIA CONTROLS EVERYTHING AND THEY DONT WANT US TO WIN. DIDNT ANYONE WATCH KORY SHEETS AND BRIT MILLER TEAR UP THE PRE-SEASON ? FRANK GORE IS AMAZING, BUT GETS HURT TO EASY, TRYING TO OVER COMPENSATE FOR OUR SUPER WEAK OFFENSIVE LINE. GLEN COFFE IS WAY OVER RATED. ALL HE CAN DO IS RUN STRAIGHT AHEAD, AND WITH A POOR OFFENSIVE LINE HE IS DOOMED. KORY SHEETS CUTS AMAZINGLY AND HAS AMAZING INSTINCTS TO FIND OPEN HOLES. GLEN COFFEE JUST RUNS RIGHT INTO THE BACKS OF OUR LINEMAN. BRITT MILLER WAS JUST LIKE TOM RATHMAN, SUPER SKILLED AND HARD NOSED. WE NEED NEW TALENT SCOUTS. MAYBE I SHOULD APPLY. I PICKED AARON RODGERS INSTEAD OF ALEX SMITH FOR QUARTERBACK,AND HEIS KICKING BUT WITH A WEAK OFFENSIVE LINE ON THE PACKERS.

this is just flat out stupid...

Why in the world would we protect a player like Ziegler, Spurlock, and Hill. While we have like 8 WR on the roster. We lost Thomas Clayton and now Sheets! So we are a run heavy team with 3 RB’s two of which are serviceable because Robinson might as well be a fullback, and 8 WR with 2 or 3 that won’t see any snaps.

This makes no damn sense. When Sing said he was going to make some moves I don’t think this is what he had in mind. Miami knows how to put their RB’s in situations to make plays and not run up the gut 80% of the time, so I’m sure he will have a good career.

I hope he does well, but I’m still not dropping him in my Madden franchise ;)

P.S. This really does piss me off!

From what I understand...

… the 49ers moved Crabtree to the 53-man roster a week ahead of schedule to prevent Zeigler from being released from the PS. Some rule about 3rd year PS-ers and the active roster having to have 53 players on it.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sheets get some regular carries going into 2010.

by shlecko on Oct 13, 2009 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm wondering

WR: Crabs, Morgan, Jones, and Battle probably are not going anywhere next year or years after that.

RB: Gore, Coffee, and Robinson.

We all know Gore is injury prone. Coffee needs time, and Robinson might not even be with us next year.

So are we going to change schemes next year or even this year and turn into a pass heavy team is that why we are stocking up on all these WR’s. which even then sheets would have been perfect coming off screens and into the flats.

Pass Blocking is not a reason to let go a young fast RB that has decent size for the speed he brings. So disappointed right now.

by whitemike1644 on Oct 13, 2009 1:33 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

We don't have the OL to be a pass-heavy team

not unless some drastic changes get made in the off-season

by smileyman on Oct 13, 2009 2:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is one of the least informed posts that I have read.

Robinson is signed to a long term contract and that’s a good thing. He does all the things that Kory Sheets could not and he does them with a much better attitude. Robinson is Pro Bowl material on special teams, as a tackler, blocker, upback and now as a returner.

Sheets could not block and had no interest in learning how to block. You say pass blocking is not a reason to let a young fast RB go? Of course not. Keep his lazy ass around so your QB can get killed. This kid had a bad attitude and got on Singletary’s bad side. He’s just another one-dimensional back with speed and not much else. Good riddance.

This kid was sure to be a good role in our future, preseason proved that. He had that change of pace break away speed that we needed. And now he’s gone and we’re stuck with Power. Don’t get me wrong I like our running backs….minus Michael Robinson.

And why didn’t we just put Sheets in for our kick returns. As I recall the kid is fast and has some good moves. Too little too late.

by Brodieman on Oct 13, 2009 1:37 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Sure

Get rid of our special teams captain who is also an excellent receiver from the backup FB position, and a great blocker and pass protector to keep a kid with one skill — speed. Sheets had an attitude problem in college and it carried over here. Read my lips: RBs MUST block in the NFL — period.

Fail job by 49ers

For a team that wants to have a running identity, I never understood why we kept so few RBs compared to WRs. I like Spurlock as a special teamer, but I get the feeling we kept him around for the Taser role, and we all know what a fail that has been. His spot should have gone to Sheets.

Now I’m mad. Gore is prone to injury. Cofee is slower than Gore. He just runs straight. This kid was sitting on the practice squad while Delanie Walker returns kicks. C’MON MAN!!!!!!! So what he can’t block, he is a change of pace and receiving running back. We have this boring offense. 8 WRs our QB can’t find. He’s faster than Cofee and has better hands. Sheets could have been like Ahmad Bradshaw, also undrafted. Damnitt. We don’t even use Micheal Robinson and trying to pickup a DL off of waivers. WHY?

Everyone laughed when I mentioned trading Gore to get Cutler

I only suggested it, and don’t get me wrong I like Gore a lot, but his health is a liability and he’s not getting any younger. The Eagles and Colts drafted RB’s, but hey we’re better than those teams right? Fact remains this past draft was a RB draft and the one coming isn’t. Coffee looks good I’m just not sold on him just yet. The time to get a RB that is elusive with hands was NOW, not later. now we have two backs that don’t have top end speed, great for us.

Everyone just needs to calm down over losing Sheets

I’ve already said it several times before, if Sheets was the huge stud everyone thinks he is, don’t you think the 49ers would have made sure he was on the 53 man active roster especially since they want to be a run first team? The 49ers have seen him in practice and in the preseason for several months. They know what he can do. And I guarantee you that if he was the second coming of Jim Brown they would have done everything they could to protect him. I think everyone is just projecting their desire for what the want Sheets to be and it’s clouding everyone’s judgment about what he really is. A RB that was undrafted and who’s own college coach had nothing but bad things to say about him

Don't trust this guy. He lies.

by urnext on Oct 13, 2009 2:36 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It's obvious he wasn't a huge stud

but he was at least as good as Spurlock or Walker (better I’d say), and we let him go while we’re keeping deadbeats around. That’s the issue I’m seeing.

Plus Sheets has huge upside. Whether or not he has a long career in Miami I’m willing to bet he’s gonna do well enough to make us wish we’d kept him.

by smileyman on Oct 13, 2009 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

How many RB's are out there that Miami can pick up?

Miami needed another RB with the recent injury. All the good RB’s are already signed to teams. Parcell’s just thinks Sheets is the best of the rest. But Sheets will probably be nothing more than a backup RB. The 49ers have seen a lot more of Sheets than anyone on this board. I trust they know his talent level and they felt it wasn’t enough to gaurantee a roster spot.

Don't trust this guy. He lies.

by urnext on Oct 13, 2009 2:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But every team has an RB on their practice squad

Yet this is the one he decided to take. The guy doesn’t have to be the next Jim Brown to make a contribution to the team.

by bignerd on Oct 13, 2009 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're right

Miami felt he was the best of the rest. But it’s doubtful losing Sheets will affect the team. Obviously we just disagree with how valuable Sheets really is, or isn’t, to the 49ers.

Don't trust this guy. He lies.

Parcells

I don’t know if that’s the best argument here. Parcells would seem to view him as a third body to have behind Brown and Williams. I’m not saying Parcells might not think there’s something special with him, but given the role he’ll fill (at least in the rushing game) I’m not buying into that yet. Of course, if they roll him out and he’s awesome, I’m just an idiot.

by Fooch on Oct 13, 2009 2:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

True

No other team drafted him or picked him up when we waived him at the end of preseason. SO even if he does okay in Miami, it’s not like parcells or other GMs can say “we knew he’d be real good” otherwise they’d have drafted him or signed him one of the two previous chances they had.

Remember, many people saying we should cut Spurlock to bring him on to the main roster (and I agree with this) were very high on Spurlock in the preseason. Opinions often change when players get regular season playing time.

But no one on our roster had moves like sheets. How many guys on our team do you see hurdle over a player, land on his off foot, and still turn the jets on upon landing. Singletary said that sheets has a lot to work on with blitz pickup…well, if teams know he’s not good at blitz pickup, they would realize he’s there to run the rock, change of page. Can someone say Play Action?! Something I don’t think we do enough of. Like many of you have said already, he’s got a much higher upside than most of our WR’s… and speaking of, i know Bruce runs good routes, and I loved him last year, but clearly the man has lost a step or 5. I’d rather have our young guys start over him. Let’s develop our WR’s already…jeez. Hill better not be our starter next year. Raise your hand if you’ve ever seen him throw an out route successfully…whether it be short, intermdiate, deep… He simply cannot get it there in time. Sad to see you go Kory

Not worth 1st round picks.

If you're a Parcells fan

He prefers big backs over speed guys. Miami picked up Sheets only because one of their guys is out for the year. If one of our backs was out for the year we’d have promoted Sheets too.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

For what it's worth

After watching last night’s game I think the jury will be out on Kory well into next season, if the Fins don’t find a better replacement before he can play a real role on the offense.

Not to mention the fact that Miami’s offense is a carnival, just bits and pieces of borrowed elements from other offensive styles and we may never get to see just what Kory would have brought to the table in our run first, “physical with an ‘f’” offense.

That being said, I remember hoping to see some real action from this coaching staff after that beatdown on Sunday, and now that we’re seeing lots of movement, I’m finding it to be a real test of faith. Thankfully, it shouldn’t take long to see the effects of all this movement.

It’s not the end of the world but we hardly use the WR’s and wouldn’t have crabtree to talk about had he not fell in our lap. While we would have a rookie OT. Still no speed. Vernon Davis is faster than our receivers and running backs. But in the end I have faith in my team and can’t wait til the Texans game so everybody can calm their nerves. One has to wonder if the playcalling is boring because of Shaun Hill’s lack of physical skills.

see

i thought the play calling was better because we were airing it out more, and being less predictable, but hill just wasn’t hitting the targets. and VD and hill were not on the same page on those short pases

Just voter NO on Singletary’s approval for Week 5 because of this terrible mistake!

of course they do this after they put up the approval post and after everyone voted!

When voting on Sing, just remember Nolan.

Why vote no?

Voting NO means I don’t like what happened in Week 5: letting Sheets go. It doesn’t mean I don’t want Singletary to stay as coach.

Doen't sound right.

Don’t see how. The coach should be the one assigning player slots

by CorneliusJ on Oct 13, 2009 8:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wait so you are saying he has to be worse then Nolan so people can vote no that they didn’t approve of his decisions this week. I have been thoroughly upset with decisions this week all over the place.

Sheets did well in the preseason and the worst they could have done was brought sheets up and tried him out before knocking him to the wildcats(dolphins). They wouldn’t even consider dropping one of our non used WR’s to get him up. We have freaking 7 of them but we are a heavy rushing team.

Not only that but someone needs to slap Raye upside the head for getting on the guys for going outside when they see something available and telling them to just get stopped at or before the line up the middle.

Judgment day is coming!

now that would be retarded...

2nd round a most… 3rd fine… but not 1st… i’m would not be ok with passing up a Safety or a Olineman for a RB

Not if we got the jets 1st :)

by 49erSalvatrucha on Oct 13, 2009 6:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Niners signed Crabtree... odds are that they will not get any of the Jets draft picks

But the Jets will get hit somehow. like what happened with the 49ers and Bears.. if the Jets draft lower than us then it may be our 4th for their 3rd or something like that.

I don't know

I’d like to actually see the lasting potential for 1st rounders- my feeling is that the very top of the 1st round is more prone to busts, and the success ratio gradually rises as you go lower, and probably peaks late in the 1st / early 2nd.

Depending on where our picks fall, a good late 1st round RB might hit the sweet spot in terms of price and talent, leaving us free to address our OL with the rest of our picks.

I'm a little bummed out

Because I believe Sheets could be a dynamic player. I don’t think he’ll be this superstar but he had a lot of 1st down potential.

by Ninjames on Oct 13, 2009 4:36 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Honestly i like him right on par with coffee but i think he is better suited for the fast and slash running, where coffee is just straight line speed. I mean do you all remember the leap over the end zone pile sheets made in the preseason for the TD. That was what i want, cant get a hole in the line, fine be superman and just jump over it!

Here comes all the negative people!!!

Dang I’m seeing alot of negative comments about our line about out decisions about everything. I’m not judging the niners until way way later. First off those people that are bagging the niners are the same ones that were so happy with our o-line when Gore ran for over 200 yards over Seattle or were so happy with Shaun Hill when he’s winning but as soon as something goes wrong omg!!! We are the worst team in the NFL our o-line blows and Hill sucks blah blah blah! Geeze calm down people. Yes we got smacked up pretty good against falcons but remember that was one bad game we have had 4 good games one of which we lost cuz of some miracle play.

We are gonna get Gore back after the bye. We got another threat with Crabtree signed. We got a hard slap in the face to bring us back down to earth and tell Singletary and crew we have to practice harder! We have to be humble and start playing even better then we were in the first 5 games of the season. I still feel we all need to be optimistic, it’s not over yet people! GO NINERS!

by 49ersAllTheWay on Oct 13, 2009 7:04 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Don’t get me wrong i still love the Niners and think we got a hard reality check last week, but sheets was a promising talent which is a lot more to then Zeigler or Spurlock. I am just dissapointed now because we gotta wait another 1 1/2 weeks to see some crabs/ VD and gore on the field..That should make things more interesting. I would have loved to seen what kind of Speedy athletic moves that sheets would have made on the field. I guess now we will have to start watching him sleep with the fishes!

Judgment day is coming!

Completely agree

by 49erSalvatrucha on Oct 13, 2009 9:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed with Fooch and others

I don’t see what the big deal is. SIngletary didn’t think Sheets was good enough to keep as a 3rd RB, not even over guys like Sims or RJF. There was no chance Sheets was going to get in a game unless both Gore and Coffee were hurt.

Sheets did okay in preseason, he had some big runs but also had five negative rushes in 29 carries. It wasn’t anything spectacular against 2nd and 3rd stringers, it certainly didn’t show him as some future great runner. He had little chance of ever seeing the field with the Niners, hopefully he gets to see the field in Miami.

by Brendan Scolari on Oct 13, 2009 8:21 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Not so much that Sheets is amazing...

as much as it’s another lingering doubt concerning this organization’s ability to construct a roster and evaluate talent.

Why so many WRs for a team (7 on the active roster) committed to being run heavy and usually have 2 WR on the field any given play, but no thought to a decent 3rd/change-of-pace back (regardless if Sheets is the answer)?

Why try and convert Khalif Mitchell to OL after the failed Duckett experiment?

Why are former 49er OL guys, practice squad (Dahl) or otherwise (Smiley, Kosier) excelling elsewhere while our line continues to flounder? Is it a OL coaching issue?

Why several high picks on projects (either in terms of being very raw like Smith and Rachal, or converting focus or position like Lawson) as opposed to, for lack of a better term, safer bets to produce?

All those little things combined makes you wonder. The team is effectively in the same place now as it’s been the last couple of years – competitive for a playoff spot solely by virtue of being in the NFC West. I don’t see that changing anytime soon, but I hope I’m wrong.

But

I really enjoyed watching Miami last night. I hope this report isn’t true.

How do you have a run-first team with too many receivers and not enough running backs?

Are they looking for someone out there to replace Sheets?

by Bob On The Coast on Oct 13, 2009 8:50 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

What's puzzling me the most is his biggest downfall was pass blocking.

I’m sure if it were a lack of effort, Sing would not have kept him on the practice squad. What the hell is Tom Rathman’s job as running backs coach? Isn’t it as simple as technique and a player learning a playbook. He was there for all of training camp and the preseason not to mention OTA’s. So if pass blocking was the problem, why is it our position coaches didn’t get him up to par, since his given talent would have been very beneficial?

by rlott#42 on Oct 13, 2009 10:32 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

WHy assume that's on the coaches?

Some players just don’t get it. Check out Russell over in Oakland. Perhaps the reason Sheets was never brought up is because though they liked his speed, he wasn’t grasping the technique of blocking and/or the understanding of proper blitz pickup. Let’s not prop Sheets up on some pedestal when he has yet to play a down in the pros and was not in demand for any team.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

Sheets

had a me-first attitude and had no interest in learning to block. You don’t stay on Singletary’s team with that kind of attitude.

The problem we all see

We see the weird imbalance on the roster. We are supposed to be a run-heavy offense but our run-heavy offense has been pretty ineffective. Plus, our “bell cow” has missed three games. Our second-string runner was knocked out on his first carry in the game where we lost Gore. Granted, he came back, but that shows how thin the running back position is. Robinson is a college quarterback turned running back who is a great special teams player but in no way a pro running back in our system. And we have a fullback to block.

Then we have a huge receiving corps, most of whom never see the ball.

So if Sheets wasn’t that good, is there a back out there for the Niners to pick up to take his place? Running backs are supposed to be plentiful, but having a back who knows the system is a little harder to replace.

This looks like a boneheaded decision, but maybe McCloughan has a plan. Right now I don’t see it. If, on the other hand, Gore comes back, stays healthy, and adjustments on the offensive line puts the team back on track and the team rolls off a few wins then everyone will forget Sheets. Almost.

by Bob On The Coast on Oct 14, 2009 6:29 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i will never forget sheets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

…that is unless he does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in the next 10 years, which i doubt..i thinkkk he will be a very good rb in the league..and honestly miami is moving in the right direction in alot of ways…adding sheets was just another wayy…gta keep pickin’

well can anyone explain it?

why in the world would we let sheets slip away? if coffee and gore are hurt we’re supposed to believe robinson can pick up the slack? our ownership is still just as horrible as i thought. profootball weekly said, regarding our loss to atlanta< “now we’re back to reality. thanks falcons”……..i think they’re right
