Week Five Prediction Games: The Almost Laughable Results
I'm watching America's Funniest Home Videos right now. You know, this show is cool for, like, 55 minutes. And then they give out the cash. So you spend 55 minutes watching a bunch of funny videos, with three or four duds thrown in there for good measure. And then you get to the last five minutes and they're giving money to the duds! I mean, quite literally, the three least funny videos in the entire show. Without fail, these videos are not funny at all. They are lucky to pull so much as a grin out of you. The only reason you even laugh is because you're laughing at yourself for thinking things might be different this time.
But it doesn't bother me. I look at it this way: the show is about awarding viewers with funny videos, but even more than that it's about giving money to families that need it. Have you ever noticed how every winning video is always a family? And never a rich-looking family? Yeah. They're giving money to people who need it. Ultimately, it's charity. And that's a good thing.
That's kind of how I score these games.

So the first thing that you should know about the prediction games is that they really aren't like America's Funniest Home Videos. The people who need to win the most aren't the families. They aren't the poor or the out-of-work. They're not trying to pay off medical bills.
What they are, is a lot like me. They're so much like me, in fact, that they are me... and those who are like me. ro128487, for example, that guy is one cool dude. I like his attitude. He's handsome, too. And if that doesn't describe somebody who should be almost beating me in this game, I don't know what does.
To get back to real life, though, you guys kind of made this week a joke. Three people scored in the 49ers game? Three!? Out of almost 70?! And one of them was groug?
For shame.
Two point brackets went completely to waste in the Bengals game. Heck... that could be the difference between tied for fourth place and being in sole possession of fourth place! These are the picks that are going to keep you out of the playoffs down the road.
So let's talk strategy. Everybody likes to pick an upset. Except that in practice that isn't true. But think of it this way: You're picking for a game where 90% of the people are predicting one way. That's going to be, like, 65 - 80 predictions between you and points. Chances are, no matter how much of a shoe in the game is, you'll be lucky to come away from those odds with one point.
So pick the upset. Suddenly, if you get the right winner, you're looking at... what... three votes between you and points? That's guaranteed points!
So would you rather have MAYBE one point, or guaranteed points? I think the choice is simple here.
Let's look at the results.
A few names immediately jump out. Mine, of course, but then directly beneath my name are a few more. Again, ro128487 had a great week and is now in sole possession of second place. More than that, he's darn close to first. This guy is riding a hot streak like no other right now, so don't sleep on him going forward.
Then, jpgarfunkle went silly on your faces. He can sniff first place, and he was one pick away from being there, too.
Then cassusriff, one of our previous first-place players, did just enough to hold onto a playoff spot. Has the hot start faded, or is he just finding his second wind
It would be terrible for me to not mention YoungWillis here. Guy went from 33rd to 12th in one week. Strong week, man. Good stuff.
Iwantwinners gets honorable mention here. Knocking out 10 points in your first week of play is no small feet. 10 points a week is a championship pace. By a lot. Can Iwantwinners keep it up? I'll tell you one thing: Iwanttofindout.
And, actually, groug had a pretty good week. There's no reason to lol at him this time around. He was solid. It's more fun for me when he's not, you know, because of the lols, but he done did good this time. Poop.

The three stooges who chose Atlanta to win should be publicly beheaded, skinned alive, tarred and feathered, drowned, hanged, shot, and in general just drummed out of town. Anyone second the motion?

hung would be the right way instead of saying hanged which isn’t a word i believe.. I’d love to agree with you but that just means they remembered how crappy our O-Line is and that Shaun Hill doesn’t win us games he just doesn’t give the game away. I’ve never said this on the NinersNation site but after last Sunday I am. Shaun Hill is a 2nd or 3rd string quarterback playing a 1st string position and he doesn’t even look like quarterback material, he looks like some dad that was watching a 49er game and came onto the field from the stands to offer a helping hand at the quarterback position. Heck, that’s basically what he could have been since he wasn’t drafted meaning he was just some dad lol.
We’d never be able to catch them to do all that stuff. They’re clearly smarter than we are. I mean, they got the pick right and the rest of us completely screwed the pooch.

You did well. I was going to mention you, but the post was already too long and rambly.

Woohoo
Moved up to the bronze spot. I’m loving that.
hey howie can you check something for me
last week I had 21 points total. This week I got a 3rd place finish and a second place. That should be worth 3+4= 7 points, correct? But you list my total now as 25, not 28.
Thanks
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
Aw hell, my new point counting system is supposed to be fool-proof! I’m spreadsheeting the hell out of this crap.
I’ll take a look.

I’m really disappointed that happened. It seriously should be next to impossible with the way I’m adding the scores. I’m not doing anything by hand this year. It’s almost 100% copy/paste + add function + sort.

But let it be a lesson to you all: double-check your scores! I’m not perfect.
And contrary to my jokes, I don’t fudge the numbers.

except mine. Guess you finally got tired of losing to me.

Well, I meant to say “I don’t fudge the numbers for my own benefit or amusement.” I just forgot that last part.
I can definitely fudge them by being stupid. I double checked some of the other players who scored in those two games, and they look okay. So I’m not too worried that I blew an entire set of scores. Which was my biggest fear here. Hopefully yours was the only fudge.

yeah that would have sucked
if there had been a widespread problem
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
It was a minor problem.
I know exactly what happened. I had a Ctrl-Z error scoring that Washington/Carolina game. It affected your score, and the two around it. So, sorry jpgarfunkle, wjackalope, and 49ERFAN. Your scores are all now adjusted.
It looks like the rest of the scores are still above board. Assuming that “above board” means “in good shape.”

woohoo
back in the top 10

I got groug'd.
I mean, PHUT also beat me to the points, but it’s funnier to say “I got groug’d,” I think.
It's the right call.
“I got PHUT!ed” has a nice ring to it, but it looks weird. “I got grouged” has alliteration and aesthetics going for it.

Can i
Join in on the fun?? even if its already week five i see people with like 1 and 3 points so i think i wouldnt be that far behind…So if i can can you tell me how and where do i sign up or put my predictions?? Appreciate it!!
"Im not a numbers guy, im a Football player"
Sure you can.
You (or anyone else, for that matter) can join in on any given week. Fooch or howtheyscored posts the six games that everyone will be predicting for the week on Wednesdays/Thursdays in the FanPost section of the site. You just predict the score of those six games within that thread and wait for the weekend.
A few notes:
- Make sure you follow the formatting that is required. If the game is listed as “49ers @ Houston Texans”, and you predict the 49ers will win 21-0, the score must be reported in that order. If you predict the 49ers will lose 21-0, you must list it as 0-21. If in doubt when you’re about to post your score, just look at what most others are doing.
- You can change your prediction at any moment before the game starts. You just have to make sure you do it as a reply to your original predictions.
Hope that was more helpful than it was confusing.
also
if you make the team that you think is going to win Bold it helps – that way if you post the score in the wrong order someone will catch the mistake for you. The post announcing the games has a full rundown of how to enter. Should be going up soon!
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
This week stunk
Twice I thought I was going to score good points only to watch the team I picked blow it at the end. I’m looking at you Pats and Jets. And the pick I wouldn’t have mind being wrong about, Carolina, pulled off the huge comeback.
Don't trust this guy. He lies.
Actually
I missed week 4. So the fact that I’m still in this is incredible. I’m like the niners. I had a hot start, came back to earth, and completely took a week off, but still I’m in the playoff hunt!
