Week 5 NFL Power Rankings and the 49ers
Not too surprisingly, our weekly look at the power rankings has the 49ers taking a dip. They dropped 3.78 spots in the composite rankings, which might actually a certain level of respect for the team. Given how embarrassing that loss was, the drop could certainly been much more significant. Of course, I didn't look closely at the teams around them so it's possible the way teams lost buoyed the 49ers ranking. It's enough work getting all the divisional rankings though, so I won't worry about that.
Speaking of divisional rankings, after five weeks of hard work, the St. Louis Rams have hit rock bottom in our composite rankings, coming in 32nd in all nine power rankings. Speaking if power rankings, I'll have the SB Nation week 5 power rankings out later today probably. I submitted my own rankings and had the 49ers 17th, Arizona 18th, Seattle 21st and St. Louis 32. More people ranked the 49ers higher than me and only a couple folks ranked them lower (both 18th), so we'll see how that power ranking plays out.
ESPN - #15 (12) - The worst defeat at Candlestick Park since 1967 will force the 49ers to reassess heading into their bye week. At least Frank Gore is coming back.
- Arizona - #19 (19)
- Seattle - #20 (24)
- St. Louis - #32 (32)
The Big Lead - #14 (9) - Oh, to be a dirty sock in the laundry basket of the Niners’ locker room Sunday. Messir Singletary could not have been pleased with his defense giving up six TD’s, nor Dre Bly’s geriatric highstepping.
- Arizona - #18 (20)
- Seattle - #21 (24)
- St. Louis - #32 (32)
Fox Sports - #14 (11) - THE BRIGHT SIDE: There may be no better time for a bye week than after getting your heads kicked around for four quarters, which is what happened to the upstart 49ers against the Falcons.
- Arizona - #19 (18)
- Seattle - #20 (22)
- St. Louis - #32 (30)
CBS Sports - #16 (14) - Thud. That's the 49ers defense crashing to Earth. They were exposed some against the Falcons. And they don't have an offense that can keep up.
- Arizona - #17 (18)
- Seattle - #20 (22)
- St. Louis - #32 (30)
Pro Football Talk (via NBCSports.com) - #15 (12) - Has there ever been an NFL coach who looks like a genius when his team is winning, and a moron when they're losing?

- St. Louis - #32 (32)

On the bright side...
Nobody is asking if Crabtree will be a distraction, even though he will debut right after the bye.
Getting Crabtree and Gore at the same time will be like getting a new FA signing. Now all we need is to trade away one of the 1st rounders we have next year for a solid offensive lineman (there are a bunch of winless teams that need that pick)
I wonder if we can trade our first round pick
not carolinas.
How many times has Joe Montana thrown an interception in a super bowl?
Just out of curiosity
when you say:
More people ranked the 49ers higher than me and only a couple folks ranked them lower (both 18th), so we’ll see how that power ranking plays out.
Is there any chance those are the Cards and Hawks bloggers?
rankings
Actually no. I just looked and the people were AFC bloggers.

Surprised
We’re still ranked that high. I hope we go to Houston and TCB/LF. That is a good team to measure ourselves by. Of course I thought ATL was a good team to measure our team by, but now I’m willing to throw that one away as an anomaly (can you hear me tear into the packet? where’s my sugar and eight cups of water). Shaub can throw. AJ is a beast. Our secondary will have to be on point.
On another note, I’m in DC this week, and Zorn’s press conference went like this:
a) I did not do enough preparation
b) Thanks to the fans, they deserve better
c) But boy, our guys played really hard
Does this sound familiar? I think the Sing lack of preparation is a cop out. I wish he would have came out and said our team stunk the place up. Period, no excuses.
Looking to put San Fran*six-o* here some time soon!
Singmay have a legit point
Especially their not adjusting to Atlanta doing things defensively they had not done all season. Zorn’s team was up 17-2 late 3rd quarter and had outplayed Carolina all game so his is avoiding some real issue. They were prepared. They just fell apart in the 4th quarter.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
