Adam Schefter Reports
Adam Schefter this morning on Mike and Mike said if he was the 49ers that he would be looking into trading for Julius Peppers with one of the 1st round picks that we have befor the trade deadline. To me that makes alot of sense in that it upgrades our D-line play and pass rush insantly. Teams will have to double team him freeing up Justin Smith on the other side. To me I would make the trade happen in a heart beat but I wouldn't give them back their pick but I would trade them our 1st round pick and sign Peppers to a long term deal, what do yall think?

I'm not familiar enough but,
a lot was made in the offseason as a reason not to do it because Peppers is more familiar w/ a 4-3 system. Of course the transition to a 3-4 is not the hardest thing in the world a guys do it every year, but midseason it may seem like we could be taking a step back, at least in the immediate weeks. Going forward, I think it would be just fine.
As for the trading of a pick, I agree, I wouldn’t want to trade the pick they gave us, ‘cause its looking like a top 10, if not top 5 selection. Not to start a whole other topic, but what to do with the Carolina (top 5ish) pick: Taylor Mays. There was a 3rd and short against Cal where he outran Jahvid Best to the corner to prevent him from getting the 1st down. He’d be a nice upgrade at safety w/ his size, smarts and speed.
But I’m w/ you> bring on the Peppers.

Is there anyone on Tennessee's defense besides Berry?

Come along and ride the muthaship!
Of course
there’s other players on defense but stand out players, should stand out every game. Particularly if they are supposed 1-5 picks. Mays does that EVERY game. He literally knocks guys out cold.
I think Berry is good, I just think there’s a tad too much hype around him.

Judging from this comparison Mays hasn’t done much at all this year, and hasn’t really played against anyone. Berry has better numbers in less seasons in a better conference. Very close comparison, edge to Berry, better numbers against better competition, everyone has a bad game. Berry has a better body of work!

Just watching
Mays on tape vs. Berry, to me, I see a better player on the field (all stats aside)
Even though this particular vid is a penalty tell me that #24 won’t be having nightmares. This guy will fear going across the middle eever again. That’s what Mays brings to the table…. FEAR
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLD33s7V7EU
(Mays knocks out 2 players)
Ignore the stats and the competition?
3 years vs 4 and the numbers don’t lie against better competition.
Berry can’t hit?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xePs7iLaNI
Moreno looked like he wanted to quit. He gets hit by DL and LB’s, and a safety put him on the sideline.
Don’t get me wrong Mays is the best of the two at hitting but both can deliver a blow. Berry is better at zone and man coverage and plays better comp, How is Mays better other than your opnion?
"Optimist Prime"
Come along and ride the muthaship!
It is just my opinion
I have watched Mays play more than Berry, but the games I have watched Berry, he hasn’t done anything over the top to WOW me. I tried looking at highlights on youtube, and while he has some good ones, I just have a gut feeling that Mays will be more of a factor at the NFL level. WR’s are terrified to go across the middle or deep with Mays’ presence. Ronnie Lott shows up to watch him though (and because he’s alumn); I think that watching Mays reminds Ronnie of himself. Berry is more of a fear factor for QB’s because of his ability to ball hawk. Palamalu played alot like Mays when he was at USC (he only had 6 INT’s) and look what he can do now.
I'm not draft scout but
I think the Polamalu comparison is interesting because of exactly what you pointed out, that he wasn’t much of a ballhawk in college either, but he was clearly a dominant player. However, the consensus is that Berry is clearly the better prospect, in fact probably too good that we won’t have a chance to draft him since there are easily at least 5 teams worse than the Panthers this year. For that reason alone I think it’s more prudent for us fans to take a harder look at Mays and consider whether he’s really the guy we want.
Personally though, I think we have too many glaring issues on offense to take care of first through the draft, and although I don’t know what the deal is with Atogwe and whether the Rams will franchise him again, he went to school at Stanford, and he’s dating Singletary’s daughter so I’m sure he must have some interest in playing for the 49ers.
It will definitely be interesting
to see where everyone goes with such a stacked draft. Anything could happen. I mean, no one and I mean NO ONE thought Heyward-Bey would be drafted before Crabtree. So there’s no telling where Berry would be drafted. I mean you have to look at the top 5 teams that will be drafting in those positions. Do they need FS’s? If the Rams keep Atogwe, they wont be dealing. I happen to think that Reggie Smith will be a very good FS, maybe not great but he could be very solid back there. I am an OU fan and watched every down that he played in college and thought to myself that he was going to be good in the NFL. He was pretty awesome in preseason, think he had 4 picks or so
If the Rams keep Atogwe, they wont be dealing
Meant , they won’t be needing a FS.
You have to assume that the top 5 picks would be this, and not necesaarily in this order but:
Rams (FS Atogwe)
Raiders (FS Hiram or Huff)
Cheifs (FS Page)
Cleveland (FS Pool)
Tampa (FS Allen)
You have to consider the teams glaring needs
Rams need a QB
Raiders need a QB
Cheifs need secondary help and WR help
Cleveland needs help everywhere but prob wont go QB
Tampa needs LB’s and DL help
So I can only see the Cheifs possibly going with a FS out of all of those really. You never know though.

You can definitely see
If you’re making that argument the same could be said about Berry. #2 is in on EVERY run play and when teams pass, he’s usually the guy making the tackle. Much like Palamalu did when he was at USC.
Making the tackle and not the play on the pass!

Peppers
Is an immediate upgrade over Sopoaga. The guy is insane. Two Probowl caliber defensive ends would be very dissruptive for opposing offenses.
Me, personally, I think we need to be spending time looking for O-lineman not D-lineman.
Peppers
He wants to play OLB in the 3-4, not DE. So he’d be replacing Lawson or Haralson.
by David Fucillo on Oct 15, 2009 9:46 AM PDT up reply actions
Interesting
I think him standing up would give him an advantage in speed against any tackles on a blitz. However, I think it would make more sense to replace Sopoaga.
Where did you see that he wanted to play OLB?
No, he discussed his distatste for Carolina and said he wanted to play OLB in the 3-4

I wouldn't give them a first without a 3rd and peppers

If that happens
I think it would benefit us more to have him take Haralson’s place. And if Manny messes up then we have a solid guy to replace him.
Justin Smith and Julius Peppers on one side (Most QB’s blind side too)? QB’s would have nightmare’s
Not really a report.
I’d really have to see 1) how available Peppers actually ends up being, 2) what our defense is looking like in the offseason, and 3) what the drafting pool looks like in the first round.
Without those three things, I can’t pretend to say anything intelligent about the idea.
Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.
Well...
Before the trade deadline we won’t have any idea about two of those things, and we’ll only know if he’s actually available if talks heat up. We’ll see. He ain’t young though. Don’t know if I’d want to give up a first for him.

Adam Schefter is assuming that Peppers would improve the 49ers pass rush.
The problem is the Niners defense hasn’t been using the OLB for pass rush that much. Also, since he would be a FA after this season, that is a lot to give up for half a year. If the Niners really wanted him they could sign him as a FA.
I would rather keep both of the 1st round picks and pick up a good, young player in each for a long term future.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
You don't seem to understand what kind of defensive system the 49ers run
They run the 3-4, so Peppers wouldn’t be playing on the D-line.
He would have to play OLB (something he’s never done).
And that wouldn’t do anything for Justin Smith (since Smith plays on the line)

Lawson for Peppers??
When I was watching the draft this year and I saw that the 49ers traded their second round pick away to the Panthers, I was really thinking that we would have picked up Peppers.
What about this trade; a second round pick and Lawson for Peppers. That way we can have Peppers playing OLB. That would really make the front 7 scary.
And I am totally on board picking up Mays in the draft. Although at this point I think our top pick will be better spent on an O-Lineman.
Draft
If we kept the two 1st rounders, we could get a safety with the 1st one and there will be a very talented O-lineman left with our 2nd 1st rounder. No need to get a lineman with the potential top 5 pick.

only if...
the 49ers trade their pick and not carolina’s pick and we sign him to at least a 5 year deal. However there have been a lot of reports that teams are no longer double teaming Peppers because he is not playing great. Now I look into as him wanting out and not really trying all that much. So if you play like crap most teams will trade you so I will chalk it up to that. I would do take peppers over lawson in a new york minute.
"Of all the things in the world losing isn't so bad; it just starts to feel like it does when you do it for so long"
I wouldn't mind experimenting...
… with Peppers. However, since it is INDEED an experiment, a first round pick is too steep a price.
Please no
What has he done this season in Carolina? When I watched the MNF game @ Dallas, he was consistently out of position and giving up huge run lanes. He pass rushes every play and still wasn’t getting to the QB. Do we really want to give up a 1st round pick for an older player on the downside of his career who has never played in the 3-4 and is a FA next year? Even if he agreed to a contract before the trade he’s going to want payment on his past years in Carolina, not what he’ll bring to the table going forward. I say no unless the Panthers take a conditional 3rd round pick that becomes a 2nd if he meets certain statisitics.

I’d be driving the Fire Mc Boo Foo bandwagon if the team makes such a trade. He’s old, he’s already on the decline, he’s expensive and more importantly the team can sign him in 11 games without giving up a thing. In contrast that 1st round pick represents another upper tier player that will be contributing to the team for another 6 years.
Only a conditional pick that can not be a #1
Then we could use him the way Walsh used Fred Dean; only on obvious passing downs. It would keep him fresh, he could replace Manny on 3rd downs and his lack of discipline would be a non factor since going after the QB would be his only job. I doubt Carolina would make such a trade but it’s worth considering only under hte conditional scenario. No #1 in trades.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.

What I Am Hearing Is That The 49ers
are willing to give up Soap and a 2nd round pick for Peppers. But Carolina want’s their 1st round pick back. Well that is not going to happen so they can keep wishing. Soap and a 2nd is the best they are going to get.

Seems plausible
Soap makes sense for them since they do need a run stopper inside for the long term. They signed Hollis Thomas recently as a stopgap measure. Soap as trade bait makes sense for us too since we have Balmer and Evans who don’t get much action because Justin Smith rarely subs out on the other side. Our cap is probably in good enough shape to accomodate Peppers’ salary demands also.
Even with him having to learn how to play OLB in a 3-4, I would definitely support a trade like this. Aside from Haralson dominating Levi Brown in week 1, most of what little pressure we get is through scheming rather than straight up talent. Frankly it makes me wonder if Nolan’s defense failed while he was here because we never had someone like Dumervil to make 3rd downs miserable for opposing qb’s.
Actually gonna say flip and say no
Totally forgot that Peppers doesn’t have a long term contract, so basically any trade for him should only be valued on his services for the rest of this year, 10-11 games basically. In other words, a 2nd rounder is way too much to give up in terms of cost efficiency, and a 1st round pick is even more valuable. Don’t know what kind of trade value he has atm, but it can’t be much.
don't know
enough about j.peppers to go for the trade. I think there should be a few questions asked. like j.peppers age, is he still playing like a player worth a 1st round. how much longer can he play, is there a j.peppers type player coming out in the draft. cause why trade for a player that doesn’t have that much time left when you can draft a player for the future that will last mo than 5 or 6 years. I think our line will make it through this year & we can address this problem in the draft. I read in one of the other replies that he doesn’t even play a 3-4, so he would play olb and if he can’t play the position then he is a liability mo then help, that’s just me though.
go niners!!! airday allday
They aren’t to give a first for him he’s not worth that. Most likely a 2nd and a player

Other Players That Could Be Had
LB- Derek Johnson, Kansas City: Has fallen out of favor under new coach Todd Haley and has seen his playing time drop over the last 3 weeks. Will also be a free agent at seasons end. What it would take? Probably a player and 3rd or 4th round pick
My offer: DT- Isaac Sopoaga and 4th round pick for Johnson
DT- Glenn Dorsey, Kansas City: Remember how dominating this kid was coming out of college? Apparently he has failed to live up to expectation, but i think a lot of that has to do with the Chiefs using him at DE instead of NT for the better part of his career. What it would talke? Mid round pick and possible player
My Offer: 5th round pick and DL- Ricky Jean Francois
QB- Brady Quinn: Now they are saying he isn’t on the market. But c’mon he sold his Suburban Cleveland home and i said to be unhappy. Now we all know that Quinn has not lived up to expectations but has he lost the talent that made him a 1st round pick just a couple seasons ago? What It Would Take? This is hard to gauge.
My Offer: QB- Alex Smith and 3rd round pick
DT- Saun Rogers: Has continuasly been unhappy in Cleveland and they are looking and ridding themselves of this headache. One thing. Is he even an upgrade over Franklin? Somehow i doubt it. What It would Take? Mid round pick and future considerations or player: My offer: 5th round pick and WR- Jason Hill

Something about his being promised a new contract and the new F.O. won’t give it to him so he wants out. I’m not sure but he may be a FA next year so a team going nowhere may be open to getting rid of a guy that doesn’t want to be there and at least receive something in return. Obviously not a #1 or even #2 but if he’s on the block I’d certainly be inquiring.

Spurlock just needs to go.
If the guy isn’t going to return (which he hasn’t the past two weeks with Rossum inactive), and the 49ers aren’t running the taser, he’s a complete waste of space. Even if they ran the taser more than once a game, he’d be a waste of space, as I think Michael Robinson or Arnaz Battle should be able to run the taser just fine.
Cribbs
The team probably doesn’t want a guy like him…
Rossum was released because he wasn’t very good in kick/punt coverage.
Cribbs doesn’t seem like the kind of guy that’s going to make lots of key tackles on ST.

Some shortsightedness I feel or maybe I'm just in a pessimist mood
LB Johnson – He’s going to be an FA next year why give up Soap and a draft pick ..a 4 even for him? Pick him up in FA there yeah for just a paycheck it would be good but taking a flyer on a guy like that doesn’t seem worth the bite we’d have to take.
DT/DE Dorsey – He’s not an NT in an NFL 3-4 in my mind. And I would find it surprising that the Chiefs would give him up (a very high first pick if I remember, and a recent one) for that paltry of a sum.
QB Brady Quinn – Still worries me giving up a 3rd and possibly a 4th next year (I’m guessing we might be able to get a 4th or 5th for Alex but maybe not). It’s a possibility but ..I still have what a friend said to me today ringing in my ear “We’re talking about a kid that has more commercials than NFL starts”
DT Shaun Rogers – Hmm if you could get him for a 5th and Jason then would be worth taking a flier on him. This is something to think about.

More Trade Options
Continuing with the trade market. I have found some more intriguing options
RB- Lendale White, Tennessee: Now obviously not an area of need but with the loss of Sheets and Coffee not really proving himself White could be a nice pick up. What it would take? mid round pick and defensive player What I Would Offer: DL- Ricky Jean Francois and 4th round pick
OT- Michael Roos, Tennessee: A really strong tackle heading into free agency. With the likelyhood of going to 0-6 the Titans may be willing to deal some pieces rather then have them walk in free agency. They normally don’t retain high priced free agents
What it would take: 1st round pick. Or 2nd/3rd a long with a player
What i would give offer: 2nd round pick and Soap
G- Davin Joseph, Tampa Bay : He could be had with the up and coming Marcus Johnson backing him up. But what would it cost for this franchise type guard? What It would take? 2nd round pick and player
What i would offer: 3rd round pick and OL- Adam Snyder… Maybe just maybe a 2nd round pick
QB- Vince Young, Tennessee: This is intriguing. Tennessee needs a QB of the future with Collins on his last legs, but they don’t view Young as that. He barley beat out Patrick Ramsey for a #2 spot. Why not take a flyer on him?
What I would offer: 5th round pick and future considerations depending on Young’s play

The Advocates Devil Here LOL
The Titans want Chris Johnson to get more carries and be a “true” every down back. With White on the roster that is hard for them to do. I can see them moving White with little hesitation.
Regarding Michael Roos: If we were to deal for him then some type of long term contract agreement would have to be agreed on before hand. Also he wouldn’t turn down franchise tackle money. Would he?
Vince Young: It is pretty apparent the Titans have given up on him. He may get one more chance this season but i really don’t think it will be as a legit shot to win the starting job. But i could see this occuring in the off-season more then mid year.
Davin Joseph: I doubt any of these names will be dealt. It’s not the MLB trade deadline after all. Bur apparently Rahim Morris isn’t exactly happy with Joseph’s run blocking. Not sure what that means but that’s what i heard. Plus some say Morris wants to put his own stamp on the team so i could see this happening. One issue though, are you comfortable giving up such a lot for a guard?

I’d have to agree with the magnet that the Titans wouldn’t be looking to deal lendale that one two punch is about all the punch they have. Chris Johnson is great but they want to have that multi-back system I think. And with Collins looking as shaky as he is I don’t see them giving up VY either. (Plus who knows we may have the cheaper version of VY in our own ranks in Davis).
Davin is good still bugs me to give up all those draft tokens that we could use to build the team into a strong point also giving up players like RJF and Soap kinda bug me when you think of “The Bill Walsh way” Hmm that’s something to do this weekend read his book again.
I agree you’re doing some dang good scouring of possible players, you and I just disagree as far as how much to give up draft picks and such. Let’s hope that this week will be spent by the team realizing how they bleeped up last weekend and recovering from that. This is where (I hope) Sing will show his ability, that psychological ability to tear someone down then build them back up again.
See here’s what I’m thinking. A) We have a good chance of taking the division if we don’t let adversity take us down. B) We’re on a good path, we have been getting players we had on the team “in line” (ala Vernon) thanks to Sing. C) Mc is not the best GM around but he’s not the worst either. And if we stupid idiots (or at least this one LOL) can see there are people around then he should be able to as well. D) Though we have a darn good chance to get to the playoffs (either as division champs or a wildcard) our chances now are not sure how far we will go in them. We work with what we have. We’re not one of those teams that just needs a player to get us to the big dance. We will get there, trust me they will see us again at that dance and yet again we will be holding the prettiest girl (the Lombardi) in our arms. The way we will get there is thru determination and perseverance not by trying to emulate Daniel Snyder or Uncle Al (Davis).
Let’s fill the immediate holes and let’s fill them with prudence. I"m not dooming us nor considering us god’s gift to football with just a tweak or two. Like the hill there are no shortcuts.
I’ll shut up now LOL

Now
I am not saying make these deals. What i am saying is what i would give up if i wanted to make the deal. Get what i am saying? A little confusing i know.
In reality i would rather wait until the off-season and continue building the team the way they have started to. With at least 3 picks in the first two rounds, maybe more depending on the Jets situation. And a lot of money to spend (actually means something because York is willing to actually SPEND the money) we can improve a great deal in the off-season.
A minor trade like bringing in Josh Cribbs etc…. may be beneficial to us succeeding this season. As it is we will have both Frank Gore and Michael Crabtree in the game against Houston. Those are two great additions, better then any trade we could think about making.

All these guys mentioned
with just a year or two left on their existing contracts are licking their chops at the thought of the 2010 uncapped year… So anyone that is in a contract year is pretty much out of the question in trade talks (i.e. Peppers). Not sure what Schefter was smoking this morning but I imagine it was something that makes one halucinate.
If anyone saw the actual peice this morning would have noticed after every suggestion he said, “although probably not likely”. Making up garbage possibilities to stir the pot.
BREAKING!!!
Tampa Bay has traded the 4th overall pick in the 2007 draft DE- Gaines Adams to the Bears for an undisclosed 2010 draft pick. Reports are that this could be the first of a couple deals by Tampa Bay before next weeks trade deadline as Morris looks to make his mark on the team. Other players listed as possible departures are Davin Joseph(mentioned above), WR- Michael Clayton, RB- Carnell Williams, OT- Jeremy Trueblood,, DT- Chris Hovan and CB- Ronde Barber

starting DT- Anthony Montgomery who has started every game since the start of the 2008 season. at 6-6 and 330 LB’s he might be worth it to take a flyer on.
