Possible Offseason FA acquisitions?
Yes, I know many of these FA's will be re-signed but it doesn't hurt to look at potentionals.
QB:
As Jimmy Clausen has ensured a return to ND and LOL-line being the biggest upgrade needed via draft, free agency might be the place to upgrade for QB.
Jason Campbell, Washington
Chad Pennington, Miami
Tarvaris Jackson, Minnesota
RB:
I know that this isn't a great need but looking through the 49er's roster, we REALLY need a 3rd/2nd-stringer to complement the oft-injured Gore.
Jerious Norwood, Atlanta
Ricky Williams, Miami
LenDale White, Tennessee
WR:
We need a 2nd-WR next year seeing as Bruce isn't coming back and Morgan isn't getting it done.
NOTE: I AM NOT PUTTING T.O. HERE.
Antonio Bryant, Tampa Bay
Vincent Jackson, San Diego
Domenik Hixon, New York Giants
Miles Austin, Dallas
LOL-line:
Well, I believe the major upgrade will come via draft but the prospects:
Marcus McNeill, San Diego
Jahri Evans, New Orleans
Daryn Colledge, Green Bay
Logan Mankins, New England
DL/DE:
With Manny Lawson emerging with the defense as a potential star, the pass rush need might not be as crucial. Nevertheless, pass rushing NEVER goes amiss with the Niners.
Aubrayo Franklin, (Priority re-signing) Niners
Elvis Dumervil, Denver
Ryan Pickett, Green Bay
ILB/OLB:
Who do we line up next to P-Willy after Takeo leaves? Ulbrich might retire after a series of concussions which leaves us with Diyral Briggs and Scott McKillop.
Shawne Merriman, San Diego
DeMarcus Ware, Dallas : It's quite likely that he's unavailable but who knows? (He might get tagged)
Thomas Davis, Carolina
CB/S:
Improvements to the secondary are on-going.
O.J. Atogwe, St. Louis
Brodney Pool, Cleveland
Stanford Routt, Oakland
Eric Berry/Taylor Mays? VIA DRAFT

Thanks for KFFL link
Thanks for the catch of missing top-tier FA’s but this post was supposed to be about likely signings
Really? Something tells me that there is no way Orton is going to become a free agent
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
I would be happy with McNeill
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
Off the top of my head
I’d love to find a place to see how many years are left on a player’s contract haven’t really found one yet. If anyone has a URL much welcomed. And thank you for your work on this.
Here’s my negative 2 cents LOL
QB
Tavaris is latin for can’t throw the football. Plus Favre is on a one year get me to the Superbowl ticket.
Unless something really bad happens, I don’t see Denver getting rid of Orton.
Jason Campbell is kind of like Smith, had so many coaches he looks like he should be in the Exorcist, his head is spinning so.
Chad is interesting. Chad is kinda “The real Shaun Hill” in other words what we were hoping Shaun Hll would morph into and might yet still.
RB:
Ricky is either retiring or staying with the Dolphins I feel and not sure how good of a FA pickup he’d be (unless on a really good short term deal)
Lendale is gonna stay with the Titans, that one two punch is all they have now. (Just a feeling)
Norwood…hmm maybe
WR:
Antonio - Hmm can you see him coming back to the fold? Not bad.
Austin - If they let him go then they’re foolish but if they do then pick him up. YAC in my mind.
Hixon - Mmmmaybe
Vincent Jackson – Heck yeah! But I don’t see them letting him go.
OL:
Jahri - good catch could be sweet.
McNeil - good also but could/would he play RT or would Staley (Staley has no choice really)
Adding: Logan Mankins, Darryl Colledge
DL:
Elvis - would love him but not sure we could get him. I think the Broncs are gonna hold onto him.
Pickett - don’t know much about him unfortunately kinda worries me as far as age kinda thrills me with size.
Aubrayo - Yep agree sign him if you can to a two to three year contract.
Linebackers
Merriman – Why do I hear “can’t coach them..can’t play with them..” ringing in my head and Merriman doing his lights out dance and then grabbing his knee?
Demarcus - Ain’t going nowhere I don’t think.
Davis - sweet but I don’t think it’s a possibility. I think Carolina is gonna keep him.
Secondary:
Atogwe - Might work.
Pool – another might work.
Rout - Hmm
Adding: Roman Harper (Saints)
Thanks to you for the list and for nocal for the KFFL link.
Love this stuff love the team, love football. Good to be around others that do as well.

I would like to see Chad become a 49er as he’s the ideal Sing QB: game-manager, doesn’t turn the ball over, can make crucial throws, is accurate.
And I will add your suggestions.
(I personally don’t believe the Saints will let Harper walk but, hey anything is possible)
Yeah
Chad would be a real nice stop gap QB oh wait we already have that.

Chad isn't just a stop gap QB
Chad can get the job done; he played in a run oriented offense last season was stellar.
I also see him as a potential mentor to Nate Davis/[young QB here]
And Shaun Hill really CAN’T get the job done.
Still Not Understanding The Shaun Hill
Can’t get the job done thing. But that is neither here nor there.
Is Chad Pennington going to be the 49ers QB of the future? NO!!! Then he is a stop gap QB, it’s that simple.

I'm not saying we should pick up Pennington
In fact I’d argue against it. Just saying that our current QB isn’t any more accurate than Chad.
I’d personally stay away from him simply because of his injury history.

chad. has the best passer rating of all time
Will it put us in a better postion.
?‘s at the OL indicate he wold be injured easily. He is the most accurate passer, I am aware. He’s gotta be healthy to win more than 10 games!

Chad has the 2nd best passer rating. Steve Young has the best.
Bengie Molina is the slowest human in existence- except maybe Homer Simpson. And Man-Ram.
I thought that Chad broke the record last season?
Steve Young played a lot more than Chad though…..
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.
by SportsChicken on Oct 18, 2009 10:28 PM PDT up reply actions
Young retired with a career QB rating of 96.8
Chad Pennington’s is just a hair over 90. Kurt Warner was a threat to break Young’s career figure, but he now sits at 93.7 lifetime. Other active players close to Young’s mark figure include Peyton Manning (95.3) and Tom Brady (93.3).
QB rating is a really dumb stat, but it’s nice to say Steve sits at the top of that leaderboard.
"It came down like a punt, Coach!" - Josh Morgan
Speaking of Manning
I’m pretty sure Joe Montana still holds the title of best QB all time right?
If anyone is ever going to take that away from him it should be Manning (not Brady…).
Plus I’d also like for him to break all of Brett Favre’s records.
:)

In terms of realistic comparisons...
Brady is a lot more like Montana than Manning has ever been.
… came into the league without too many expectations. A world-class coach put him at the helm of a league-changing offense where he began to thrive until really coming into his own with the best pair of WRs in the NFL, including an all-time great. Known for 4th quarter comebacks and dramatic postseason play, he took his team to the big show on well-rounded teams early and offensive juggernauts later on.
That bio would make excellent copypasta for both Brady and Montana.
Manning is more like Dan Marino + 1 Superbowl. Highly-touted 1st rounder that was a star from day 1. Pocket QB with a rocket laser arm, endless confidence and inhuman field vision.
I’m sure both Brady and Manning will be in the conversation for best ever by the time they retire. Ten years ago, the only reason that so many people were willing to give the title to Montana over Marino and Elway was the ring count. If that remains true, then it may well be the case that Brady’s career will be looked back upon as being “better” than Manning’s.
Though I do agree, from a personal standpoint, that if anyone were to ever strip Montana of the title, I’d like it to be Peyton. He’s the best pure passer I have ever seen, an extraordinary team player and an all-around pretty awesome guy.
My real question, though, is this: what happens if Brett Favre wins a Superbowl in Minnesota this year? It pains me to say it, but he’s playing as well as I’ve ever seen him, and he does hold just about every relevant passing record.
"It came down like a punt, Coach!" - Josh Morgan
He’s the best pure passer I have ever seen, an extraordinary team player and an all-around pretty awesome guy.
I feel the same way about Manning. The guy not only throws the ball, but he practically pulls ALL the strings in that offense. Brady, to his detriment, will always have Belichick “in his ear.” I also think he’s a pretty all-around awesome guy.
what happens if Brett Favre wins a Superbowl in Minnesota this year? It pains me to say it, but he’s playing as well as I’ve ever seen him, and he does hold just about every relevant passing record.
Even with all his back and forthness about retiring I think that Favre is an awesome QB and an awesome guy. Yes his indecisiveness has screwed teams and fans in some way or another, but there’s very little denying he’s a great QB.

Other Free agents
OT- Chad Clifton Green Bay
OT- Michael Roos Tennessee
G- Chris Snee New York
OT- Adam Terry Baltimore
G- Bobbie Williams, Cincinnati
WR- Steve Breaston, Arizona
WR- Mark Clayton, Baltimore
WR- Braylon Edwards, New York
WR- Lee Evans, Buffalo
WR- Michael Jenkins, Atlanta
WR- Brandon Marshall, Denver
DE- Alex Brown, Chicago
DE- Luis Castillo, San Diego
DE- Richard Seymour, Oakland
DT- Vince Wilfork, New England
SS- Dawon Landry, Baltimore
Also keep in mind that just because a team doesn’t want to “lose” a player it doesn’t mean that they can avoid that. For example San Diego will have 5 premiere free agents on the market yet they will only be able to keep one off the free agent market via the franchise tag. Also teams like New England, Tennessee and Green Bay normally don’t utilize the franchise tag as they avoid retaining high priced free agents

I like Breaston
Would fit well I think. If Edwards plays the rest of the season like he did Monday night no way the Jets let him walk. Same with Marshall—I can’t see Denver letting him go. I’d love to grab either Snee or Williams in FA. I actually think our D-line is ok for now.
My Dream Scenario
Sign WR- Michael Jenkins, T- Marcus McNeil and DT- Vince Wilfork
Draft
1. S- Eric Berry Tennessee
1. CB- Joe Haden Florida
2. DE/ LB- George Selvie South Florida
3. RB/FB- Charles Scott Louisiana State
4. G- Brandon Carter Texas Tech
Jenkins would step in and be a very good #3 WR behind Crabtree and Morgan if not overtaking the latter to become #2. McNeil is a franchise tackle and would be a great bookend with Joe Staley. Vince Wilfork is a dominant anchor for a 3-4 and would do wonders for the defensive scheme. We have all heard the hype surrounding Eric Berry and people it is real, we don’t have to worry about him turning into a Michael Huff type bust either. Joe Haden, well that may be a stretch considering he would come into 2010 as our 4th CB but it would be a steal, unless Jimmy Clausen declares and falls to us i say that is where we should go. George Selvie has top 10 talent and amazing pass rush skill. I expect him to go much higher but playing at USF hasn’t helped his stock much, he could be had in the 2nd round. Charles Scott is an intriguing option in the 3rd round, he could replace Norris at some point at FB as well as fit well behind Gore. And i see no reason to spend an early round pick on a guard, especially considering the top rated guard isn’t slated to go until the early 3rd round. Brandon Carter is the 3rd rated guard and has all the entangables.

nocal81, good choices
You have upgraded several positions in a very nice way. Now.. all you have to do is Twitter McC and let him know the draft and FA plan for 2010.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
Not bad
I have serious doubts that Wilfork would be available in fact if there is one player I would say in your list that has no chance of leaving there team it would be him. That’s why they got rid of Richard. Of course I’ve been wrong about numerous things a ton of times. I like Haden but based on my above assumption I’d go this way:
1-A. S Eric Berry or Taylor Mays (Just dont’ think we’ll have a chance at Berry, but who knows)
1-B. NT Terrence Cody – I think we need a big huge mofo to anchor that line and if it ain’t Wilfork what about Mount Cody?
2. DE/OLB George Selvie S FL
3. OT Selvish Capers WV
4. OG Sergio Render VT
And that goes with picking up in FA:
OG Logan Mankins (NE) or OG Darryl Colledge (GB)
OT Marcus McNeil (SD)
S Atogwe or Roman Harper (NO)
WR Michael Jenkins
Whatcha think? How much do I suck? LOL
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Oct 17, 2009 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions
Excellent picks except Capers may go earlier.
I think Capers is exactly what this team needs at RT – he’s very good in pass pro, but I can’t see him lasting until the 3rd. Early-mid 2nd rounder. And it might be good to think about drafting a college RT to play OG to make sure he has some feet along with size. But I definitely agree with the Berry/Cody 1st rounders. A trade up to get an extra 2nd for an OT might be wise, too.
McClo doesn’t believe in paying for OGs, so I don’t see him bringing in Mankins, and I think we’ve got more than enough WRs for this offense. But I’d love to bring in Atogwe or Harper and McNeil.
McNeill is my first choice and Atogwe would be nice
That would free up the 1st rounders. Depending on how high Carolina’s pick is if it is a 1 – 10 it would be good to trade back and pick up another 2nd. Then you can get somone like Capers… That is, of course, if Boone doen’t pan out at OT for the Niners.
Berry will go way too high and the Niners have FS covered. There are a couple good NT that are possibly coming out in 2010 draft.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
I say we get Otagwe..
Heck he is dating Sing’s daughter.. He will be valuable for our team and Sing will be able to keep those “deadly” eyes on him for at least 7 months out of the year :). Win win situation

WR's
The Crabtree & Morgan combo have plenty of upside. I don’t think it’s worth bringing in any of those receivers and taking snaps from the ones that we need to evaluate.
Besides, none of those guys are good enough to make any of our QB’s look good. Anybody short of Fitzgerald or Calvin Johnson would probably come in here and do squat.
"We Deserve"
As Much As Everybody Wants To Blame Hill
Put Phillip Rivers, Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, or any of those 2nd tier QB’s behind this offensive line and tell me they will succeed. They won’t!!! We must fix the offensive line before anything, that must be the primary off-season objective.
Regarding WR’s. It is true that the Crabtree/Morgan duo has plenty of upside. But what do we have past that?
Brandon Jones: Hasn’t proven squat since joining the 49ers (due to injury)
Isaac Bruce: In his final season with the 49ers
Arnaz Battle: Pending free agent. No better then a #4 WR
Jason Hill: Cannot even break the active roster and when he did couldn’t even haul in a pass
Michael Spurlock: Hasn’t been given any chance to do anything
Dominique Zeigler: Can’t break the practice squad
So if we are going to carry 6 WR’s it looks like we will need to add 2-3 in the off-season. If we are to carry 5 then we will need to add at least 1 but most likely 2.

Just a horrible offense line.
Pretty much popped the bubble that the team cannot run because defenses don’t respect Shaun Hill so they stick 8 in the box.

Succeeded in an offense and behind a line that has allowed him to get sacked a total of 7 times in two seasons. If we want any QB to have success we must fix the offensive line first. Of course that doesn’t have to be done via the draft either. Marcus McNeil, Michael Roose, Darryn Colledge etc…..

They had their chance to take a franchise QB this year, but opted to try and fix the OL and go with Bulger and his big contract. Their big FA signing was a center too. I tend to think they’ll try to make things work with Bulger unless he shows absolutely nothing this year, which is possible.

You can’t really expect any QB to light up elite defenses. If you saw today’s game, he made a few big time NFL throws and moved around pretty well in the pocket for the most part. With the way their schedule plays out, I think you’ll be hearing more and more good things about him as the year winds down.

Bulaga looks good
in run blocking, he is driving guys 3 or 4 yards off the line today, his pass pro is ok, and i think he could be our solution at RT if drafted. The reason he is at LT this year is cause he is the best option, its not like he is stellar at pass pro like some prototypical LT’s. he could prove to be a brutal run blocker anchoring our right side. lets get it done

Don’t think the Jets have signed him to a new deal yet, and his price may come down as it’s becoming more obvious this year that he’s better off strictly as a 3rd down back. We really need a true 3rd down back to help limit Gore’s wear and tear, and Washington is a very good return man too.
Also Jimmy Raye was his RB coach his first 3 years in the league, so maybe that will count for something.
