Trade Deadline & Free Agency & Draft

Hey Niners Nation,
Just like the rest of you, I have been wasting my hours arguing over an NFL daft that is a year away, scrounging for any new 49ers development, and hoping to forget our humiliating loss to the Falcons last week.  This bye week has been possibly the most boring week of my life.  When Americans are bored, what do we do? We blog!  So I'd like to embrace the American in me, and write my first FanPost about the options at the trade deadline and free agency for our San Francisco 49ers.

First, let's take a look at our needs. We need:
Starting Right Tackle
Franchise Quarterback
Stout Ted Linebacker (to Replace Takeo Spikes at end of season)
Ancoring Nose Tackle
Ball-Hawk Free Safety
Pass Rushing Defensive End
Gamechanging Kick Retuner
& Maybe even an upgrade at Cornerback

Now let's take a look at who is available on the trading block:
QB Brodie Croyle (KC)
LB Derrick Johnson (KC)
WR Dwayne Bowe (KC)
QB Brady Quinn (CLE)
WR Josh Cribbs (CLE)
DE Julius Peppers (CAR)
CB Nnamdi Asumogha (OAK)
RB Darren McFadden (OAK)
RB Steven Jackson (STL)
QB Josh Johnson (TB)
RB Lendale White (TEN)
DE Jevon Kearse (TEN)
If there is Anymore you know of, feel free to add on to the list.

I am very intrigued to see Nnamdi on the block.  I would give up our 1st and replace Bly with him, but other than that or the possibility of Cribbs, I would not make any deadline deals.

Now let's take a look at the 2010 Free Agent class:
QB Jason Campbell
QB Kyle Orton
QB Chad Pennington
RB Ronnie Bown
RB Lendale White
RB Jerrious Norwood
RB Peirre Thomas
RB Darren Sproles
RB Willie Parker
RB Cadillaac Williams
WR Vincent Jackson
WR Brandon Marshall (if he's not resigned)
WR Braylon Edwards
WR Steve Breaston
WR Kevin Walter
WR Miles Austin
WR Muhsin Muhammad
Jahri Evans
LT Marcus McNeil
LG< Daryn Colledge
LT Jaed Gaither
LT Chad Clifton
T Mike Gandy
DE Julius Peppers
DE Aaron Kampman
DELB Kyle Vanden Bosch
DE Elvis Dummervil
DE Derrick Burgess
DE Jevon Kearse
DE Leonard Little
DT Vince Wilfork
DT Richard Seymour
DT Casey Hampton
DT Ryan Pickett
LB Demarcus Ware
LB Shawne Merriman
LB Karlos Dansby
LB Kirk Morrison
LB Thomas Howard
LB Demecco Ryans
S OJ Atogwe
S Antoine Bethea
S Nick Collins
S Will Allen

Now we look at who will be leaving the team after this year:

Signed through 2009

G David Baas

CB Dre' Bly

WR Isaac Bruce

WR Arnaz Battle

LB Jeff Ulbrich

LB Ahmad Brooks

NT Aubrayo Franklin

S Mark Roman

T Barry Sims

DB Marcus Hudson

LB Marques Harris

Let Baas, Bly, Battle, Bruce, Roman, Sims, Hudson, and Harris walk!

Now that we know our options, lets take a look at our checklist of needs again:
Starting Right Tackle- Free agent Signing of McNeil or Clifton
Franchise Quarterback- Carolina's 1st Pick(Sam Bradford)
Stout Ted Linebacker (to Replace Takeo Spikes at end of season)- Sign Kirk Morrison
Anchoring Nose Tackle- 2nd Round Pick?
Ball-Hawk Free Safety- Sign OJ Atogwe(as said numerous times on NN, he is dating Singeltary's Daughter)
Pass Rushing Defensive End- Kampman could be nice FA pickup
Gamechanging Kick Returner- Josh Cribs for 3rd Rounder
& Maybe even an upgrade at Cornerback- Nnamdi Asumogha

What do you think of your new 49ers?  This is my first post.  Sorry if it is sloppy, suggestions are welcome.

My thoughts on how to improve the team into next year

I’ve been thinking about the same thing Sac-townz finest…. especially since I realize that the 49ers might make it to the playoffs but aren’t really a contender for a championship.

Here’s my thoughts:

First, I’d look into whether the Bucs would be willing to part with Davin Joseph at the trade deadline. I doubt but he’s very good and on a very bad team.

Offseason-

New proven O-Line coach if it doesn’t improve after the bye week.

I’d look for a veteran guard and maybe Otogwe as FA pickups. I think G Logan Mankins will be a FA this year and, if I remember right, he would have been our pick instead of Baas if he’d fallen one more spot. They may not need to go safety because of the panthers pick or Reggie Smith gets healthy and proves himself.
I don’t think McNeil will be available but I’d certainly go after him to play RT if he is.

Resign Franklin. Bring back either Brooks or Harris to compete for a roster spot… maybe Battle too if he doesn’t get much interest elsewhere (his professionalism will help other receivers). If Baas starts playing like he did at the end of last year then we can bring him back too but there must be competition at LG.

Draft -

With the Panthers pick I would just take the BPA. By season’s end I expect this pick to be somewhere between 9-13. It’s a great place to pick up a really good player after teams reached for needs ahead of them.

49ers 1st rd pick – RT. Should be a great position to pick up a stud RT if we don’t draft one earlier. BPA again if we already got one with the 1st pick.

2nd-3rd rd. – Have to be a little flexible but another pass rusher, NT, ILB, CB all have to be options.

In the later rounds I’d look to steal one of those small quick WR’s or RB’s that can return kicks and possibly add another thing for D’s to prepare for on O.

Conclusion-

This leaves the team with one more year of Spikes at ILB which I think he can handle and I’m going with the idea that they believe in Nate Davis…. if they don’t then the Panthers pick becomes BQBA. Might take another year before he’s ready to take over though. I think Rachal will eventually bounce back from his early struggles this year.

There should be a lot more speed among our receivers next year and an O-Line that can hopefully run and pass block… I’d be happy if they could at least do one now. Rachal has talent but needs to stop blowing protections. Our current RTs are backups. Baas is too inconsistent and injury prone.

Defensively another playmaker anywhere should be the focus. Franklin is adequate but I think he benefits playing next to Smith and in front of Willis. An upgrade would be nice but not overly necessary. At safety, Goldson needs to improve in the mental part of the game and Lewis needs to stay healthy. If one or both fail then upgrades are necessary. They do need another OLB who can provide some pressure, no, sacks.

It’s too early to predict actual picks and injuries could always change things.

Depth Chart-

QB-Hill, Davis, pick
RB-Gore, Coffee, Robinson, scatback?
FB-Norris
WR-Crabtree, Morgan, Hill, mid-rd. pick, Battle/FA
TE-Davis, Walker,
LT-Staley, pick or Snyder
LG-Mankins*/FA, Wragge
C-Heitman, Wallace
RG-Rachal, Wragge
RT-1st rd. pick, Snyder or Pashos

Defense
LE-Sopoaga/Balmer
NT-Franklin/early pick
RE-Smith, McDonald (pass rush specialist)
LOLB-Lawson, Brooks/Harris/Biggs/pick
Will-Willis
Ted-Spikes, Mckillop
ROLB-Haralson, Brooks/Harris/Biggs/pick
CB-Clements,Brown
FS-Goldson/Atogwe*, pick/Smith
SS-Lewis, Smith/Goldson

Yea we should get

Mankins and Atogwe that would instantly make our line and our secondary better sprinkle that with our draft picks and maybe another FA or two and we got a pretty sweet squad.

Willis at “Will” LB? I think you mean at the “Mike” spot, no?

Kirk Morrison is more of an OLB, and Aubrayo Franklin is doing an excellent job as an NT. Otherwise, great post.

Bengie Molina is the slowest human in existence- except maybe Homer Simpson. And Man-Ram.

Just a few disagreements on our needs

Spikes is signed for another year, and we already have McKillop to replace him supposedly.

Franklin has been great this year besides the last game, when pretty much everyone had a bad game. I think people get too hung up on the need for a brand name nose tackle like a Hampton or a Wilfork. How many people know that the Ravens 3-4 has been anchored by Kelly Gregg for the last few years? It works because they have other great players in the front 7 (Ngata, Lewis) and frankly we have a couple studs too in Smith and Willis.

Also our CB depth is fine. Clements is Clements, Spencer has been outstanding (although health is a concern with him always), Tarrell Brown has been good whenever he gets on the field, Walt Harris could be coming back, and if we had to we could probably even re-sign Bly.

One HUGE need which I think you missed was guard. Baas has been avg at best and constantly injured. I doubt we re-sign him. Rachal might already be a bust before his career has barely even gotten started. Frankly I think we are closer to solving our problem at RT (Pashos could be the guy) than we are at OG.

As for guys we could sign, Atogwe (Stanford, dating Sing’s daughter) and Leon Washington (Jimmy Raye was his position coach for his first 3 years) are two guys with connections to here that I’d like to see us get.

I think its actually kinda the opposite and most people underrate the importance of an extremely good NT in the 3-4. How many people know the Ravens D has been anchored by Kelly Gregg? I think most know that and the Ravens have also been playing quite a bit of 4-3 lately with Gregg, Ngata, Talvou and Mckinney all spending quite a bit of time in the middle. It could be argued pretty easily that at least 3 of those 4 are better than Franklin. Gregg may not be quite as big of a name as Casey Hampton or Vince Wilfork, but he’s been about as good. Name a 3-4 D thats been really successful without an excellent NT or at least very good NT depth. Franklin has been better than I thought he’d be, he ended up playing pretty well late last season and started this season well but he isnt a great player and we don’t have much depth at the position. I think OL (both guard and tackle) are the primary needs right now, but I think the NT position is also a pretty big need.

We do just fine stopping the run as is. Our main problem on defense is generating a consistent pass rush. Aside from Jay Ratliff, 3-4 NTs generally contribute nothing in terms of pass rush. I just don’t see how using our resources to upgrade at NT will do much for upgrading our overall defense. Pass rush OLB and a playmaking safety are much higher priorities on defense imo.

by znk916 on Oct 17, 2009 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thats just false. While few 3-4 NTs collect a large number of sacks its ridiculous to say that guys like Hampton, Jenkins, Gregg, and Wilfork haven’t made considerable contributions to the pass rushes their teams have been able to generate. You don’t think it would be easier for our DEs and OLBs to get a consistent rush if Franklin were the kinda of guy who occupied 2 or even 3 O-lineman on every down? Seriously?

True statement

by 49erSalvatrucha on Oct 17, 2009 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just feel that the effect of having a NT tie up two blockers in the middle isn’t really that relevant to the pass rush when most of the pressure comes off the edges rather than up the middle. Anyways I just think it’s a roundabout way to fix our biggest problem when we could just as easily spend our resources on getting a pass rush OLB or playmaking safety.

Anyways the main point I wanted to make from the start is just that I think people are still a year behind in terms of thinking Franklin is a weak link and needs to be replaced asap. We’ll have to see how the rest of the year goes, but it hasn’t been that way since Manusky got full control of the defense.

by znk916 on Oct 18, 2009 1:19 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just feel that the effect of having a NT tie up two blockers in the middle isn’t really that relevant to the pass rush when most of the pressure comes off the edges rather than up the middle.

You do understand that the offense has a finite number of blockers, right? So if fwo guys or three guys are forced to block the NT in the middle it means there are one or two fewer guys on the edge? My point is that spending a ridiculous amount of money on a big name OLB who has been playing with a dominant NT will be a waste of money because he’ll be facing more blockers than he faced with his previous team and may not be anymore effective than Lawson and Haralson. Similarly a big name FS may not be quite the same kind of “playmaker” when the offense has one more player it doesn’t have to use to block the NT. The difference between a NT who occupies two or three blockers routinely and a NT like Franklin is massive and has a strong “trickle-down” effect on the rest of the defense. Franklin has been better than I expected and he’s a guy I’d love to have for depth, but I rarely see him eating up blockers the way Hampton, Wilfork, Jenkins, Rogers, and Williams do.

Franklin has been playing really good this year

Not getting lots of stats but that’s tough for an NT anyway. He’s tying up offensive blockers, which is letting the linebackers have a great day. He’s an integral part of our run defense I think.

by smileyman on Oct 18, 2009 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Where would you rank Franklin among 3-4 NTs?

Franklin is solid and I’m not saying, by any means he’s a weak link, but he’s a guy you should be looking to improve upon. He’s not an upper tier NT with Ronald Fields as the only guy I can think of that Franklin ranks above.

Besides from eating up blockers the elite NTs get a lot of push into the pocket on passing downs. That really affects QBs and opens up more lanes for blitzers.

That said, I’d like to see the Niners resign Franklin but add another guy in FA or the draft. A platoon system will help and someone to groom for the future is needed, Franklin is 30. If a rookie doesn’t pan out then we still have Franklin who is capable.

I’d like to see guys come in who can challenge Haralson and Lawson too. Haralson is a pretty good pass rusher but lacks the versatility that Lawson has. Lawson’s not a much of a pass rusher. Even a ILB who’s good at blitzing would add another dimension to the D.

A young corner to groom for future years and a safety to challenge for playing time.

Guess I would mostly draft for D

by abasketballfan on Oct 19, 2009 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rachal did good last year and just needs some work. He will be ok.

Need to replace Baas as this is his last year and either resign Franklin or draft/sign a FA another NT in the offseason.
Clements is ok but it would be a good idea to get a good DB for the future. Bly won’t be here next year so he could fill that spot.
SS is a spot where the Niners can get a good replacement for Roman, to back up Lewis
I would still like them to either sign a OT FA like McNeill or a high OT draft pick.. Need to solidify the front line and the backups. Boone could be the backup for a long time starting next season

i would rather the 49ers trade Smith and sign Rhett Bomar off the NY Giants Practice team

That would give the Niners two possible QBs for the future.

I like the way you think

haynbredren, you’d make an excellent GM. That move to aquire Peppers, then grab Mays with our Panther pick would make us Super Bowl caliber with a good CB to go with Clements. We obviously need to be busy in FA for an O-Line upgrade. We could use a big RB to give us some thunder in the backfield. I love Gore, but he’s been injured every year thus far. We could use a bruiser back there to go with Singletary’s smash mouth style of play. Even with Gore at 100% we could use some thunder…This could be possible for 2010’s Depth Chart

LE= Julius Peppers FA/ Ray McDonald

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by chikmagnet_565 on Oct 17, 2009 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Peppers does not fit into the 3/4 defense, rather get a top OLB/Pass rusher in the draft

You have two 3rd round picks one going to a WR and one going to Kam Chancellor

Cribbs will not be a Niner.. there are enough WRs already and he would cost too much

Why would the Niners take Jonathan Dwyer with Carolina’s 1st round pick? OT is the best bet here and you also the Niners taking Mays with this pick at the bottom. OT or BPA. Many also like Berry more than Mays so if they get a good RT FA then it could be Berry.

Baas is a free agent after this season but Brandon Carter looks like a good pick
Wallace is Heitmann’s backup at Center

By 2010 Rachal should be back at RG like you have but there should be a backup, isn’t Wragge signed through 2010?

LE is K Balmer and Ricky Jean Francois

McDonald is not a NT and Franklin is a free agent so here is another possibility for 1st round pick with a couple good NTs going high.

Clements and Spencer are the two starting CBs with Terrell Brown close behind both so your 2nd round pick will not be ahead of any of them

SS with Smith and Chancellor could be good, not sure how he is rated

Ok my take on a few things ..giving it a shot

I"m making a big list for myself of FAs (using Walter Football as a Free Agent Reference) and here’s some guys I’m seeing (I’m not finished going thru the FA list so might be some other good ones I have not gotten to so far)

Free Agency Possibilities of note
OT – Marcus McNeill SD (26), Jared Gaither BAL (23) , Tyson Clabo ATL (28)
OG – Logan Mankins NE (27), Daryn Colledge GB (27), Deuce Lutui ARI (26), Chris Kuper DEN (26), Jahri Evans NO (26)
OC – Lyle Sendlein ARI (25)
FB – Lawrence Vickers CLE (26)
RB – Jerious Norword ATL (26), Pierre Thomas NO (24)
WR – Stephen Breaston (26) (RFA) , Michael Jenkins ATL (27), Miles Austin DAL (26), Chris Henry CIN (26)
MLB/ILB – Barrett Ruud BUCS (26), Karlos Dansby ARI (27)
DE – Elvis Dumervil DEN (26)
DT/NT – Gabe Watson ARI (26) , Nick Hayden (23) (ERFA), Dusty Dvoracek CHI (26) (RFA)
CB – Fabian Washington BAL (26) , Richard Marshall CAR (24),
S – Oshiomogo Atogwe STL (28), Roman Harper (26), Antoine Bethea IND (26)

There are many options there so I won’t make immediate choices (I’ve done that a bit in a number of posts) but I will say that we could possibly get a good OT, G, S, MLB, CB and Safety in FA and maybe pick up some other pieces too. Then strike in the draft and get either another good Safety (Berry or Mays) an NT (Cody) or even a good OT in the first. And get some other good players in other rounds with no loss of those picks.

That’s my take, for now. :-)

Haha I agree

Way too early to predict FA pool when most of the elite guys will probably be re-signed anyhow. The Chargers have 3 guys coming up for big pay days (McNeill, Merriman, VJack) and they’ll probably have to let one go. At this point, it’s probably gonna be Merriman, so the question becomes whether you’d want him anyways, since he’s coming off a major injury and has been hit with a drug suspension as well.

I’ve been 100 times more entertained in the Raider and Vikings “show my team some attention” fan posts because it at least it involves the NFL. I don’t care about your favorite college football player, it’s Week 6 of the NFL season. Come February thru April when nothing else is happening we can talk plenty then. GITFO, none are playing an NFL snap this season let alone for the 49ers.
