summary of NFL Experts picking 49ers to win or lose this season

Week 9 update against Titans:

Looks like about 75% of all the experts picks are for 49ers to win. Out of the 42 experts and consensus selections, 9 of them are either 7-0 or 6-1 picking in the 49er past seven games. Out of those 9, 6 of them have chosen 49ers to win against Titans. Another pattern is that 49ers are chosen to win 85% of the time but the best experts (best experts are the top 14 out of the 42).

Post explained:

I have compiled NFL expert picks for the 49ers games, including from 6 different major websites and 30+ sports analysts from those sites, and other projection selections.

These are only for the 49er games, to give us an idea how the experts predict in games that the 49ers play.  For example, Chris Mortensen (ESPN) and Steve Greenberg (Sporting News) were the only two that are 5-0 (after 5 weeks in the season), picking 49ers to win in their 3 games and lose in 2 games.

Additionally, after the 49ers pick record, I listed the number of times the expert has chosen the Niners to win a game.  So Mortensen and Greenberg both chose the 49ers 3 times.  As a 49er fan I would pick the 49ers 5 times through 5 games, but then would have a 3-2 record.

Maybe later in the season these standings would give a better idea of which "experts" are best at analyzing the games that the 49ers are playing in.  I've included their overall records aswell predicting all of the NFL games.  I'm sure many of yours and my picking winning percentage in our pick-em leagues are higher than some of these experts, but also I'm sure our picks are biased in the 49ers games, and many of us would be 3-2 (after 5 weeks of football). This way we can see what the best-of-the-experts are predicting in good matchups that offcourse we all would optimistically say the 49ers would win. I think these standings will make more sense later in the season.

Let me know if there are any good sources that I forgot or if anyone has an idea to upgrade this for future posts?...

Format of post is in this order for all of the tables below-

Source and link, (for example ESPN)

Sports writer and winning percentage of all NFL games, (Chris Mortensen 81-35)

Selection of 49ers or opponent Week 1 through current, (49ers, next row 49ers, next row Vikings, etc)

record of picking in 49ers games, (for example, if expert picks 49ers three times in the first three games of the season, the record would be 2-1)

number of times selected 49ers to win.

formatting is weird

trying to figure out if I can edit it nicely…

by fortyniners on Oct 18, 2009 12:12 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Ok.

I’ve been trying for an hour how to post and make formatting not screw up the whole page and still can’t get it. How do I post something basically from Excel or form a table format?

by fortyniners on Oct 18, 2009 1:22 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

would it have been possible

to make the formatting correct using an application, then take a screenshot, then crop and save the picture as a jpg or similar and then post the picture in the thread?

by danknerd49 on Oct 18, 2009 12:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You could also copy/paste the cells you want into MS Word, add borders wherever you want to make sure it looks nice, and then use the SBN MS Word paster tool.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

Hmmm...

Chris Mortensen has had us pegged.
except that we should have won that Viks game, so Wickersham wasn’t so bad either.
The only two guys to pick us in week 1.

by Krowley on Oct 18, 2009 9:05 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I like this segment

Why all the different tables? It might help solve your formatting issues if you combined all into one table.

by bignerd on Oct 22, 2009 7:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Thanks

Next week I’ll try to improve the formatting. If its all one table I’m not sure how the text wrapping will go, plus will be harder to separate out the different websites/networks that way. Pasting it into word does something weird and tag endings mess up and distorts the whole page. I think it’s decent now just doesnt have any lines.

Anyway MSN just updated their picks for week 7 and looks like we’re getting a bit more love from them (as opposed to ESPN with all 10 of their selections going for Texans).

by fortyniners on Oct 23, 2009 7:48 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Nice. Now we just need a computer programm( or someone very motivated) to weigh every pick based on past accuracy and give us the winner.

ESPN has the Niners losing across the board this week. The only other week ESPN was unanimous was the Niners over the Rams. Are the Texans so much better than the Niners that we deserve the Rams treatment by ESPN?

Amy Mainzer my brain thinks your brain is HOT!

by cybermaldonado on Oct 24, 2009 11:18 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

No.

But remember that 8/10 from espn picked AZ to beat us and 8/10 picked Minnesota, obviously feeling we had little to no chance in either game. I wouldn’t expect them to know much about our team compared to the usual heavy hitters. We have yet to earn that type of status but a win on Sunday would put us back into approaching that type of attention.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Oct 24, 2009 12:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes except that

against the Falcons were were picking up the hype and 50% or even more of picks were for 49ers winning.

So a win this Sunday will definitely get us back to that extremely respectable 4-2 zone. But it seems with each game everything is on the bubble, unless we build a good winning streak.

It pains me to have Mortensen as the best. Of course none of these guys really know that much. It would be interesting to have the picks of the real pros in Las Vegas.

If Bochy coached the Warriors Bengie Molina would start every game at PG.
