Official NN Trade Deadline, Free Agency, Draft Thread

As was pointed out yesterday, we've had a whole heck of a lot of FanPosts going up discussing the NFL trade deadline, potential free agent acquisitions in the offseason and even draft targets.  While I personally think it's rather early for that discussion, I can understand the excitement people have for it, particularly in a bye week.

One drawback to all these FanPosts is that some intriguing ones are being pushed off the front page.  Accordingly, I think it's time to consolidate the thought process.  The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday October 20.  While not much is expected to happen at the deadline, I'm sure folks will have plenty to discuss about potential trades, and thoughts on trades that do actually go down.  And of course, if the 49ers make a deal we'll have plenty of front page coverage of it.

There has been an increase in offseason discussion even though we find ourselves only entering week 7.  Since the trade deadline and the offseason are both about player acquisitions, it makes sense to compile the discussions into a single official FanPost for the time being.  So, if you do decide to create a new FanPost on one of these topics anytime soon, I'll probably be in touch with you about moving it into this official FanPost.  If you can provide a compelling argument why your FanPost should be allowed I'll certainly consider it.  But again, this is not about stunting creativity.  it's about trying to organize it so we can maximize everyone's experience here.  If you have any questions or concerns about this, please email me at ninersnation@gmail.com.

In order to keep this up top for folks to discuss, please Rec this up as much as possible.  3 recs gets it moved to the top, but even then please keep rec'ing it as that'll keep it up top longer.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

First and Foremost Get Willis extended to a 7 year deal and pay up.

Any young guards on the trade market, which I doubt wait until FA. Get Berry in a 49er uniform and also Rodney hudson from FSU. Throw in Ciron Black from LSU for our OL and Passing defense issues. Also I think there could be some depth at cb.
1.Berry- if not there ILB,OL
2. OG- get one of the best prospects
3. CB-needs to be addressed
4. T
5.T
6.CB
7 CB

Something along the lines I think we need help in the defensive backfield, and offensive line

Question for ya Lott

you don’t have NT up as an apparent need are you considering that they resign franklin and have him be the NT for next year? Or do you just not consider it a high enough need to be addressed?

A guy that I have liked for a third round pick if he falls is Eric Decker from Minnesota. I know we don’t need a receiver at all but I think he could be great on 3rd downs. He has great hands and body control and the only thing keeping him out of the first round is his speed.

Most Overrated Draft Prospects

Taylor Mays (FS, USC) – 5 career INT
Jake Locker (QB, Washington) – Career 51.7% comp.

I’ll throw those two out there and am interested in hearing what others have to think (not limitted to those two but also about others). For overration sakes we’re talking atleast 1st rounders, if not early to mid 1st rounders.

Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

by methodrampage on Oct 19, 2009 10:08 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know how much drops would affect Locker’s completion percentage but with the team that he has around him I wouldn’t read too much into that but I do think he is a little overrated. I do agree with Mays though. I would much rather have Berry.

Locker wasn't very good in his first two seasons.

Steve Sarkisian has done wonders for him.

Locker has shown improvement with Sarkisian

But if I was an NFL GM I’d definately would like to see him play his senior before I spent a high draft pick on him. I’d still like to see at least a 60% comp. once in his career.

Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

by methodrampage on Oct 19, 2009 11:35 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm pretty sure he'll finish this season with a 60% comp.

However, I do agree that I would like for him to stay for his senior season.
Sarkisian can turn him into an elite QB….and either way, Locker needs the experience.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Would we even be talking about Locker without the USC win?

I just don’t see how he’s now the #2 QB prospect. I’d rate him, until I see more, as pretty much on par with Juice Williams.

You cannot look at Taylor Mays' interception numbers and discount him

they way Pete plays him, he doesn’t have much of a chance to garner interceptions. Pete basically has the other safety play in the box/coverage and has Taylor Mays play a deep rover position to make sure no one breaks any big plays. The man is one of the quickest people I’ve ever seen on a football field and hits like a linebacker. There is NO way he’s overrated. Top ten pick, for sure.

Too funny

USC homers are a load full of giggles. Mays looked mediocre at best against ND. A deep rover should be able to nab some balls. Frankly, Mays technique sucks, he’s all measureables, somewhat like Vernon Gholston.

Seems there were lots of people who wanted him on draft day and now he’s available supposedly. I think he might be worth it, for a 4th, to try an add some pass rush from the outside.

FA and the draft.

In free-agency, I saw we get McNeill from the chargers, or Jahri Evans from the Saints. I don’t think we should go after both of them. They will both have big price tags. I don’t know how good Evans is at run blocking, but when we had Larry Allen at G, our rush offense was dominant.

In the first round i say we get Taylor Mays with the first pick to fill in for M. Lewis, and then Brian Bulaga with our second pick.

by crevis1987 on Oct 19, 2009 12:19 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Why not both?

We have good money and a good cap. I say we make some hits in the FA market and grab some players. Get McNeill and get either Jahri, Mankins or Colledge at G. Then we can focus on S, RT, NT and depth (maybe even QB) in the draft. If Berry is there pick him up, if not get Mays and there are going to be a number of good OTs in the draft as well and we could get one of them and hopefully still get an NT (a real 3-4 NT not a DT for a 4-3, my pick stays with Cody if we can get him. The OT/RT pool is a lot deeper than the NT pool I think (correct me if I’m wrong) then if QB Lefevour (sp?) is there at like 3rd or 4th pick him up. Ok I think I just got too greedy there maybe LOL But what the heck :-)
Our line is bad right now but not that bad. We have a good LT and need a good RT, we have Snyder playing RT and he’s a Guard (probably could be a pretty darn good one) And we have Heittmann for at least a few years more and Chilo needs some seasoning and training but might not suck longer term, then with Snyder and Evans/Mankins/Colledge as our other OG that would be a sweet line.

Ok I’ll hush up for now. :-)

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Oct 19, 2009 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Could also pick up a top LT in the 1st and move Staley to RT

If McNeill is available that would be a great pickup.

Because the 49ers were able to sign Crabtree it is remote that they will receive more that a mid round pick.

In the tampering case the 49ers lost to the Bears, the 49ers lost a 4th or 5th round pick and I believe they switched the 3rd round picks because the 49ers pick was several spots higher than the Bear’s. I really doubt that the penalty for the Jets will be much more than that.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Oct 19, 2009 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

There is a big difference in the two cases.

In the 49ers’ tampering case, Briggs never missed a team meeting, a practice, training camp, or a game due to tampering. The Bears suffered no damage, thus the penalty was slight.

In the Jets’ tampering case, Crabtree missed many team meetings, OTAs, mini-camps, an entire training camp, and his services for five full games. Those are significant damages, and if the Jets are found responsible the penalty should fully compensate the 49ers for those damages. How much Mr. Goodell believes those damages are worth is something none of us knows, but if the concept of proportionality is served this could be a huge penalty.

But the Jets play in a huge media market the NFL doesn’t want to alienate and the 49ers don’t appear to carry much weight with the league office, so who knows. I’m just preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.

Yes we need O-Line help but...

Why is everyone so against drafting a QB in the first round?
There are a # of QBs tat would be good for us.
McCoy, Clausen, Bradford, Locker, Jevan Snead
Thee are NO QBs in free agency worth going after, but a few # of OT worth going after.
So why not get OT help in free agency,Pick a QB in 1st round , because 1 mor yr of Hill will be hell!

I can hear it now... David Stern says, "And with the #1 pick in the 2009 Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Blake Griffin, Power Forward from Oklahoma."

by sac-townz finest on Oct 19, 2009 7:59 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The Niners will probably have two 1st round picks from about #10 to #20 so I don't think one of the top QBs would be available

Too many needs to do a big package to trade up, to many good players in the 2010 draft to do that. Out of the list you have I see Clausen and Locker as high firsts if both come out and maybe Bradford but hurting himself twice this year is not good.

by Eastbayjim on Oct 19, 2009 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

I’d try to trade back. Maybe the #10 for a late first rounder and an early second rounder. Though, if Eric Berry somehow drops to #2 (I know, a virtual impossibility, right?), we should trade every single one of our picks this year to move up to get him.

You have been DFiBrillated.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Oct 19, 2009 9:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would love to get Berry but we can sell the house for one player.

Now if he falls to the 49ers like Crabtree did this year… I think most people here would be ok with McC picking Berry
Trading back in the 1st and picking up a high 2nd would be great. It would allow the 49ers to get good OL help, Maybe a OLB/Pass rusher (not a converted DE), and also a good cover CB. Also would like to see them draft a good, strong, fast RB who knows how to block :-D . Not sure how deep the RB class is in 2010.
I would be happy with Berry and WIlliams or Bulaga in the 1st round.

He’s got an arm from what I’ve seen and has the height to see around the pocket. Showed a lot of fire against Florida too which I actually like. A little too early to project him in draft terms though. Lets see how he does the rest of the season.

pass rusher

Not to be Captain Obvious or anything, but the 49ers defense needs to figure out how to get after the QB on a regular basis. Whether it be trade, draft or FA, the defense will continue to struggle until they can force the opposing QB to get rid of the ball before he wants to.

by illini49er on Oct 20, 2009 10:25 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

The Niners have built a solid foundation with the exception of a maybe an O-Lineman or two and a franchise QB (crossing my fingers on Nate Davis). Now it’s time to add some more playmakers whether they come through stars or specialists.

They can add a guy who can rush the passer now but may not do much else. At least that will help on 3rd and long. McDonald already fills that role for the D-Line. We need to add another LB who can rush.

I’d also like to see them add a speed player to the offense. Guys that could add a few more wrinkles that opposing teams have to prepare for… hopefully that speed guy can return kicks too. A Darren Sproles like RB would be nice.

I am not sure if it is the pass rushers or the defensive play calling.

In the 49ers 1st game Lawson and Haralson were all over the QB but I don’t they were used that much in the other games.. in the same way.
Yes, we could use a top OLB/pass rush talent but we should be ok with what we have.. if they were used that way

Haralson looked dominant cuz Levi Brown is a turnstile

I hate to say it because I like him, but the problem is Lawson. He is completely useless as a pass rusher. He only ever gets to the QB when other guys get pressure first and force them to scramble.

by znk916 on Oct 20, 2009 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

On Matt M’s blog, he talked to a person from NFL matchup who broke down the film of the niners this year and his conclusion was that the success of the pass rush was from the schemes that they had been playing. It was his observation that player by player, the niners pass rushers were less than impressive ability wise. They need a guy or two that can get pressure on his own, without the scheme creating it.

Wild idea that might kill two birds with one stone :-)

Free Agency we pick up Will Blackmon from the Packers. This would give us some young depth at CB (he’s 24) and he’s good on special teams (3 returns for touchdowns in his 4 yr career) . Another good young CB in FA would be Richard Marshall of the Panthers also 24, and/or Fabian Washington (26) from Baltimore.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Oct 20, 2009 5:41 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Question for the group..what could Garcia teach Nate?

If we don’t go and get another young QB then we’re going to need to get a veteran just to be around, just in case. Garcia still has the fight and he’d like to have the chance (so yeah he could push Hill for the starting position and hey if he wins it he wins it, we’re not Oakland LOL). But he also showed that he’d be willing to take it as 4th QB just not on the Raiders. If we picked him up as a vet for a safety measure, then he could probably teach young Mr. Davis a thing or two he’s been thru the league had his ups and downs and he knows scrambling and such. There are quite a few things he could teach Nate and he does have some “stuff” and he has a fire. (I know I’m full of wild ideas tonight. Some of you probably have said a time or two “Yeah he’s full of it alright!” LOL

Jeff Garcia?

He is a headless chicken who makes excellent theowns on the run. All of which are between 5-15 yards. He also is pushing 40. What fundamentals could he possibly pass down to anyone. I would go after Mike Vick if that was the case. Ironically I would give up a 3rd-4th rd. pick plus Arnaz Battle for Terrell Owens. He is suffering the same way Randy Moss did in Oakland. And just like Randy Moss then, all the critics are saying T.O. is done. He has no more ability. I beg to differ. He has dropped way too many passes. However, with Hill’s accumen at QB, T.O. would be an accet along side Crabtree, Morgan, Gore, and V.Davis. Just some food for though…..Peace….Stelf Bombz

Sorry for not elaborating

I thought it was pretty obvious.

Edwards is basically Shaun Hill with a stronger arm.
The only thing I don’t like about him is that he’s too afraid of throwing the deep ball.
But that’s partially because his offensive line sucks worse than ours….

Ok

I thought it was another one of those many Trent Edwards is good posts without any context.

I’m glad someone else noticed he’s a copy of Shaun Hill with a younger carbon date. Edwards has already stolen Hill’s obvious nickname of Captain Checkdown. I’m still debating who is better but so far leaning towards Hill. Edwards has a slightly better arm but Hill has a better feel for the game. Hill has had his moments so I’d probably give him the edge.

Dude to keep an eye on

LSU right tackle Joseph Barksdale.

He’s a junior, but he just might be the best damn RT I’ve seen in a while.
Unlike most college players he doesn’t just use his strength and/or athleticism to dominate…he uses technique.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.
