Grading NFC West + Houston Players
OK, the grades from Pro Football Focus for Week 5 are done and I've compiled a list of how our 49ers players compare with other players in the NFC West. And I threw in the Houston Texans players (prior to yesterday's victory over the Bungles) to give us an idea of how they compare.
Once again, this is subjective grading, not objective analysis, and thus the results are affected by whatever biases the two or three people doing the grading possess. Here is a link to the PFF page that explains their grading system. Basically, they grade every player on every play, with about 63% of the grades falling between +0.5 and -0.5 and the maximum/minimum grade for each play being +-2.0. The grades shown below are cumulative grades, accrued over the course of a game and season. This means that the higher the magnitude in either direction, the better, or worse, that player is. Please note that I have left out the penalty grades because they are irrelevant in the vast majority of cases, and thus the displayed grade totals will not necessarily add up. A player's ranking compared to all other NFL players is given as the first number displayed in each entry. Some rankings will be meaningless because the player has not really had many plays to grade - these are almost always the players with several "0.0" grades and a cumulative grade near 0.0.
Links to the appropriate PFF page are located in the headings and it is worth noting that by going to the linked page one can click on the player's name and get a nice chart of that player's grades within that category graphed over the course of the season. Nice feature, and I recommend using it to gain further insight into a player's performance.
Again, the correct way to view these rankings and grades is not as the bible on player performance but as something to improve one's confidence in other, more objective, statistical analyses like DannyInFlorida's FO presentations.
First, the Cumulative Team Grades, and then the individual position grades.
CUMULATIVE OFFENSE
Total Plays On Offense ~ 305
Overall Grade Sum = -40.4
Passing = -0.6
Running = -2.9
Pass Blocking = 0.0
Screen Blocking = 1.5
Run Blocking = -29.9
Penalties = -8.5
QB Sacks = 14
QB Hits = 12
QB Pressures = 24
It's not difficult to see that the -29.9 grade on run blocking is the main problem on offense. The individual grades below confirm this. Also, S. Hill has been either sacked, hit, or pressured on 50 out of approximately 172 offensive plays, or about 30% of all passing plays. Not good at all.
CUMULATIVE DEFENSE
Total Plays On Defense ~ 363
Overall Grade = 32.4
Pass Rush Grade = 9.3
Pass Coverage = 6.2
Run Defense = 28.9
Penalties = -12.0
QB Sacks = 12
QB Hits = 21
QB Pressures = 49
Here, it's the 49er run defense that is carrying the team, as it should, but the pass coverage has not been the greatest, as we will see below in the CBs section.

Goldson, wow
I would not have figured that he would be so awful just from watching the games. Figured Clements would be much lower because he’s been prone to giving up huge plays, but I’m guessing this system is pinning alot of the blame on Goldson. We badly need some new and better players at safety.
Big props to Spencer btw, the guy has been an absolute stud.
Goldson hasn't been that good.
Not Roman-like, but not that great.

According to some metric...
… posted on here a couple days ago, he makes Roman look like an All-Star.
spencer has been the most plesantly suprising player on defense...
along with franklin and mcdonald

I agree with...
… the assessment of Spencer. Definitely a surprise.
I like these numbers
We’re just a top safety and O-line away from making a splash. Some would include QB, but I don’t think it’s as dire a need with the type of offense we wanna run. Hill’s a good fit.
Orton
Everyone is on his nuts now, but it has alot to do with Denver’s godly OL. I don’t see much of a difference between him and Hill.
He throws a much better ball
Even though I agree that his Line is awesome and gives him all day.
He just seems more accurate though.

Michael Oher....
Let’s see how Crabtree does on Sunday, but I was hoping for Michael Oher to join the 49ers. Already playing LT for a good Ravens team. Just think, Oher at RT and Staley at LT. Would be a pretty good start and probably would improve our run game.
How would Oher join the 49ers?
Not going to happen.
We can still hope that Crabtree becomes the best player of last year’s draft class.
The fact that he has been promoted to starter so quickly is great sign.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

"Shaun Hill is actually doing his job pretty well. He's not the problem with the offense."
I don’t see how you can reach that conclusion based on those numbers.
Look, the three guys below him are having terrible seasons. I mean, just horrid. They are really, really bad.
Hasselbeck has basically been average this year (DVOA +.1%).
Schaub and Warner have been pretty good (both have DVOA’s over 25%)
(Okay, as an aside, that puts in question the value of these numbers. They rate Hasselbeck as being in the same ballpark as Schaud and Warner … but these are the only numbers which will tell you such a thing.)
That being said, as a group, it’s safe to say they’re solidly above average, if not spectacular. They aren’t lighting the league on fire.
And Hill’s rankings are about HALF of what those guys’ are.
I agree with these numbers’ opinion that our run blocking has been a BIGGER problem. However, these numbers show Hill being solidly worse than guys who are above average. Furthermore, he is worse by a BIGGER margin than he is better than the guys who just suck.
In other words: Hill is closer to terrible than he is to good. (And, of course, the bottom two guys on the list are backups. Great … Hill is closer to Seattle’s backup than he is to their starter!)
If he had, say, half the number of somebody having an MVP season, that might be okay. He doesn’t. He has half the rating of guys who are top-half of the league, probably even top third.
The PFF graders are giving him positive marks.
He doesn’t turn over the ball and does a decent job with completions given the fact that he is playing with severe pressure most of the time. If ever gets a decent OL to work with, he could be good. Not great, not a Manning or Brees or Brady, but good.
But if you simply disagree with his grades, that’s a very legitimate argument because we really don’t know anything about the people doing the grading.

He's thrown 2 INTs and fumbled like 4 times already (only lost 1...I think)
Look at it this way:
Arizona has a terrible O-line, Seattle has an injury riddled O-line…yet, Warner and Hasselbeck are better than Hill.

Um yeah?
No one’s saying he’s better than Warner or a healthy Hasselbeck. I just think that Hill is closer to the middle of the pack (as reflected by PFF’s grading metric) than bottom-of-the-league worst (as per DVOA).

Going back to Clements' grade
Granted, corners and safeties are the hardest for casual viewers to judge because we don’t see them in the screen until the pass is arriving.
What do you guys think? is our poor results vs #1 wrs on Clements or is it on the safety help.
safety help a large part of his struggles...
his take chances/aggresive playing style depends upon solid safety play…which we lack…well at least when roman is in the game
"You look at Vladimir Radmanovic, this guy is cut from stone. As if Michelangelo was reading and a lightening bolt flashed before him."

"17. Kelly Jennings SEA (2.7,0.0,2.2,0.5)"
Something is up with their DB ratings, Jennings gives up receptions all the time with the exception of the season opener.
"Mayhap a hidden door lurks nigh. Let us search the environs."
You're right. Too many variables.
For instance, we all know Nate Clements is a physical player who is great at throwing WRs off their timing routes and at run support. Does he get beat deep at times? Sure, but is that because he’s been playing them tight to take away the quick timing routes or is it because he just missed the assignment? My vote would be that he’s taking away the quick routes and exposing himself to getting beat deep, and this results in just what one would expect – he gets beat deep sometimes. He could take away the deep routes by playing off 5 yards, but that would open up the short routes. So take your pick. The graders at PFF don’t know what the coaches have told Clements to do and may ding him for letting someone go by when his primary responsibility was to take away the short routes.
