Official 2009 NFL Trade Deadline Open Thread
I'll be perfectly honest: I really don't see anything of substance happening at the NFL trade deadline today. The NFL trade deadline is 1pm today, but due to the many issues relating to the salary cap with trades, it is never nearly as busy as the MLB trading deadline. Throw in the fact that it's rather early in the season and that's just one more reason it's not crazy busy.
Nonetheless, rumors continually fly about potential trades. As this FanShot pointed out, KNBR claimed the 49ers might be interested in Cleveland Browns DE Corey Williams and Kansas City Chiefs LB Derek Johnson. There have also been plenty of rumors (not connected to the 49ers about Terrell Owens, Brady Quinn, Dwayne Bowe, Josh Cribbs and many others. John Clayton had a quick rundown on some of the rumors being tossed around.
So will anything happen? We've got an official FanPost for the deadline and any offseason acquisitions. Given that today is in fact the trade deadline, it makes sense to separate that out from the FanPost here on the front page. If the 49ers do make a trade we'll certainly have plenty of coverage on it, but I'm not holding my breath. Feel free to post any and all rumors here leading up through 1pm pacific time. In the meantime, if you missed it, Florida Danny has his latest player ranking discussion for your reading pleasure.

I didn't know the Texans had fans
Unless you have Andre Johnson on your fantasy team, you’ve got nothing to be proud about.

Nothing is going to happen.
It’s all spurred by the media needing good ratings.

out of the big 3 sports
NFL’s trade deadline ranks behind NBA and MLB. I rank MLB #2 because trades still happen after the deadline as long as the player clears waivers, whereas the NBA is a “hard” deadline. Honestly, this is the first time ive even been cognizant of the NFL deadline before it’s passed by.

OK, given that nothing is happening ...
… here’s LondonNiner’s Deadline Day Dream feature!
Let’s say that we were able to secure, in exchange for one of the first round picks we have next year plus a lower-round pick …
1. Any current player from the NFL.
2. Any player from 49er history.
3. Any player from NFL history.
Don’t worry about whether a player is likely to be traded, whether they would be attainable for a first-round pick and a lower-round pick, or in the case of historic players, whether they ever were up for a trade. Just imagine you’re in na room with Scott Mac, Jed York and Coach Sing, and the world is your fantasy oyster. It’s trade day, and you get to have whoever you want.
So you might go …
1) Drew Brees.
2) Ronnie Lott.
3) Lawrence Taylor.
Or whatever …

Uh, I think I get it.
1. Adrian Peterson
2. Joe Montana
3. Reggie White

Yep, you do get it ...
… and no doubt our team would be the better for those three. I chose to shore up our secondary a bit with the 49er choice, but hard to disagree with Joe. Reggie White beefs things up on defense, and you gotta love Peterson and Gore in the same backfield. Unless you’re bringing in Peterson to leave Frank on the sideline?!
Anyway, it’s a bit of fun, in the absence of actual news!

Is that cheating?
Woodson is also a former Niner. Although I didn’t stipulate that the former NFL star must not have played for SF. It’s possible I should have made that clear. It’s also possible I am thinking way too much about this and should get on with the rest of my life.

1. Champ Bailey (Take away one side of the field and look how much you can blitz)
2. Joe Montana
3. Anthony Munoz
Amazing how 3 hypothetical players would turn us into a Super Bowl favorite
by abasketballfan on Oct 20, 2009 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The overrated Champ Bailey?
There are a handful of corners in the league better than Champ Bailey. Starting with the kid playing across the bay, Nnamdi Asomugha.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.
by methodrampage on Oct 20, 2009 2:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Did you watch the game last night?
How often did you see a Niners D blitz under Nolan? They blitzed almost every play last night. The reason is they leave Bailey out on an island. When he’s healthy he’s still a true shut down corner.
Granted I don’t watch the Raiders much because it’s garbage but the time I did I saw Asomougha get burned for a long TD.
But I wouldn’t call Champ Bailey overrated.

I still don't believe thats the full explanation
I still cling to the notion that Nolan was just too conservative as a head coach.

1) Tom Brady (he was good when he didn’t have recievers he was even better with them)
2) Jerry Rice (imagine Brady, Rice, Gore, Crabtree, Bruce and Morgan)
3) Alan Fanaca (we need an o-lineman don’t we?)
by ro128487 on Oct 20, 2009 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Picking Tom Brady over Joe Montana is Blasphemous.
1. Some kickass offensive tackle that is better than what we have.. There are tons to choose from.
2. Joe Montana
3. Jerry Rice.
All you said was that #3 had to be an NFL player, and I’m pretty sure Jerry was an NFL Player. It’s not a bad idea to have the best EVER QB, and best EVER WR on your team… and since we have Gore, we don’t need Adrian Peterson. We have a good enough and young defense… all we need is that O-Line to stop making other teams defenses look so good.

1. Jared Allen
2. Jesse Sapolu
3. Orlando Pace (in his prime, of course)
i like the idea of ronnie lott playing for singletary and behind P Dub. that’s a killer thought, but I gotta do something about that O Line.

needs
The 49ers have so many needs on the offensive and defensive line i doubt they’ll start acquiring talent through the trading deadline. Besides, Scott Mcoughlan a product of former gm of the packers Ron Wolf has always built teams through the draft. There is no way they are willing to part with a high draft pick for an expensive DE like a Julius Peppers. One might argue that their rollover cap is 14 million next year, giving them plenty of room to spend but i would rather keep my draft picks (especially when you have two 1st rounders), stick drafting a OT and/or DE and spend the money on Free Agency.

anemic pass rush
When are my niner’s going to draft or pick up off the trading block,a true pass rusher. I know that a cornerback’s best friend besides the sideline is a dominant pass rush. nate clements a good tackler coming up on the run support, but, he seem’s to be in too many other teams highlight reels on the deep touchdown passes, he needs a better pass rush.

Get: Cribbs and Quinn
Give: Alex Smith (for some rewason they had ian intrest) and 1st roung draft pick we got from the Panthers.
(Although I know that if we haven’t heard anything by this time, it is all just dreaming)

by Drew K on Oct 20, 2009 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's obviously going to be a
Hall of Famer someday and he has been known to go get a ball or two over DB’s. That’s why I chose him. Fitz (now, or last year if you want to get technical) and Moss (in his prime- best season) are both fast and could jump with the best of them. Hence the comment Dan Marino throwing up a jump ball to either guy on either side of the field. I guess that’s what my thought process was on that. There’s been all kinds of wild picks here and I doubt that this was meant to be a serious type of thing at all
by Drew K on Oct 20, 2009 9:58 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Your other picks were great
I saw the plan too. I just don’t like that malcontent Moss.
I’m not sure he makes the HOF. Plenty of people would want to keep him out because of his on again, off again effort. Not having SB probably buries his chances because it gives the naysayers an excuse.
by bignerd on Oct 20, 2009 11:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I see your point though
when he was with the Raiders he was just collecting a paycheck and the way he left Minnesota wasn’t the best way to part ways with the team that gave you a shot. But you can never deny talent as well as records.
by Drew K on Oct 20, 2009 11:24 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Haha
I’m not sure he makes the HOF.
Ludicrous. If you have problems with Moss then you have problems with TO and by the end of their careers Moss and TO will be the #2 and #3 WR, statistically, of all time. There is no way in hell the NFL keeps out players with that kind of production, no way.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.
