49ers sign RB Keon Lattimore to practice squad
It's not exactly a huge transaction, but still worth noting. The 49ers signed free agent RB Keon Lattimore to their practice squad.
Lattimore (5-11, 225) signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent following the 2008 NFL Draft and was released on August 30, 2008. He was signed to the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad on December 10, 2008, where he spent the remainder of the season. Lattimore re-signed with Dallas on May 1, 2009 and was released on September 5.
Lattimore, a 25-year-old native of Baltimore, MD, played collegiately at Maryland. He finished his Maryland career with 1,744 yards and 19 touchdowns rushing. As a senior, he led the Terps with 805 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns.
Maybe Shaun Hill needs a fellow Terp to fire him up. On a barely related note, for the folks here who have lived in the greater Washington, DC area (I went to undergrad in DC), how many of you are Maryland fans? I have to admit that Maryland fans always seemed to talk an inordinate amount of crap even though they hadn't won anything. Prior to them winning the basketball national title I worked at the ESPNZone in Washington, DC and dealt with them on a fairly regular basis during basketball season. It seemed like while Duke and UNC were battling for ACC honors, Maryland was the third wheel with an inferiority complex. If we have any Maryland fans here I'd love to get an explanation for this. It's pretty off-topic, but I might as well take advantage of this rare opportunity.

Can this guy pass block?

Not sure
SI scouting report for 2008 draft.
BIOGRAPHY: Led Maryland in rushing as a senior when he posted 213/805/13 in nine starts. Also added 21/95 catching the ball. Junior-year totals included 160/743/3 on the ground. Struggled early in college with a significant right shoulder injury.
POSITIVES: Nice-sized ball-carrier who runs with outstanding quickness. Displays solid vision and instincts and waits for blocks to develop. Immediately finds the running lanes and quickly gets through them. Possesses the speed and agility to turn the corner.
NEGATIVES: Does not play to his size and does not show much power in his running. Tends to dance around rather than taking it up the field and running north/south. Gives minimal effort blocking.
ANALYSIS: Lattimore possesses terrific physical skills and showed a lot of ability as a senior when he was the primary ball-carrier. He lacks a physical nature to his game, which could be a consequence of his earlier shoulder injury. If Lattimore checks out medically and plays to his potential, he has a spot at the next level.

Sounds like a no on the pass blocking question
Gives minimal effort blocking
I like that he comes from a football family (Ray-Ray’s brother) and find it odd that he seems to lack..well it sounds like passion in his play effort. I also like that he has outstanding quickness.

this is the same reason sheets got let go! grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Sheets wasn't let go
He remained on the PS due to his poor blocking. And now Lattimore will be there working on his blocking. It’s not like there are PS eligible pro-bowl RBs waiting to be claimed.

Guys let's remember these decisions don't exist in a vaccuum
The 9ers were trying to figure out how to reorganize the OL and get the Crabs acquisition finally completed. And they had to take off a very valid member (Rossum) to accomplish that. The only way to get Sheets on the team would have been to make another cut. It wasn’t deemed as worth it at the time. That can be debated but as Ten said and Spurred we did not release him we had someone “steal” him from our practice Squad.

Maybe Shaun Hill needs a fellow Terp to fire him up.
If the offensive captain, who is coincidentally a Terp, can’t fire Hill up, I don’t see how a practice squadder could!

In personalities, yes,
in the way one plays the game, not always the case. The Mannings? Barbers? Etc…
My best friend growing up had 3 brothers and all four of them were very physical football players. When we played pick up games, there was never a time that someone or a few people left the field bleeding. Sure that may not be the case in every scenario but when you talk about a guy like Ray Lewis, I would have assumed he made everyone around him a physical type of football player, and most of all his little brother

On your Terp's Question
It’s a D.C. thing in general. I was stationed there for over 6 years, and all I ever heard was how this was going to be the Redskins year!! Terp fans just always had the same attitude… But I must say I did laugh the first time I heard "Fear the Turtle!" I mean really who is going to fear the turtle? Of course you always heard non-fans refer to them as Soup.

Terp Question
You’re not from the DC area, you’re not a Maryland alum, you simply have no concept of what being a Terp means to the rest of us. You met a lot of alums at the ESPN Zone 10 years ago and that makes you an authority on Maryland fans? Really? You comment is stupid, insulting and woefully misinformed. You shouldn’t comment on things you know nothing about, it makes you sound like an idiot..
by Terptown on Oct 21, 2009 12:48 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Whoah there Terp....
I spent 8 years in the DC area and dealt with a large number of Terp fans. I have many friends who went to Maryland or are Terp fans. I was simply pointing out the way I interpreted their actions and was hoping for clarification. I never once claimed to be an authority on Maryland fans.
And your response, fittingly enough, only furthers this belief in my own head.
by Fooch on Oct 21, 2009 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ridiculous
There are asshats in every fan base without exception, you should know that. Painting a picture of how some of the people acted in a BAR as the way Maryland fans are is stupid and insulting. You used the fact that a Terp was signed by the 49ers as a way to make a broad based general incorrect assumption about an entire fan base and you’re getting YOUR panties in a twist? And what clarification are you looking for exactly? That generalizations are generally retarded? Well, they are. You have some VERY fine Terps on the 49ers team, you couldn’t ask for better young men than Shaun, Keon and Vernon. We are incredibly proud of them as Terp alums. Why don’t you write about that instead of insulting our fan base.
by Terptown on Oct 21, 2009 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're not helping the image at all.
Just saying. My guess is that you’ve heard the argument you’re attempting to refute before and you have a calculated response and are failing to release that wasn’t the argument at all we were trying to make.
by Ninjames on Oct 21, 2009 1:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
actually
I think a person could in fact make a rational argument for why Terps fans may come across as a bit pompous and defensive. They might argue that Duke and UNC get so much love and in the ACC and there’s a sort of UNC/Duke bias, sort of like West Coasters complain of an East Coast bias.
Instead you’re blowing up on me and I really don’t think it’s necessary. I’m certainly not saying Maryland fans are bad people. Just like Duke and UNC fans aren’t bad people (it’s taken me a while to accept that about Duke fans). But I’ve just noticed a common trend in my life experience.
by Fooch on Oct 21, 2009 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Common Trend?
Then your experience is obviously extremely limited and obviously very biased. I find it interesting that you would paint a broad brush of Maryland fans based on the actions of a handful of asshats in a bar, but then still have the unmitigated gall to judge me. You don’t know me, you don’t know anything about me.
Let me tell you about Maryland fans. There is a HUGE contingent of us who are firmly on the 49ers bandwagon because we are so fervently rooting for our Terps. Maryland fans are some of the most passionate and loyal fans on the planet. Our alums are some of the most successful and influential people in the world, they impact every facet of society in every corner of the globe. Your incorrect generalization based on obviously limited experience is insulting. You obviously don’t know anything about us if you think all we are is a bunch of insecure trash talkers.
You have literally THOUSANDS of 49er fans on this side of the coast now because of the collection of Terps on your team. How about you try embracing us instead of throwing us under the bus.
by Terptown on Oct 21, 2009 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wow
I’m going to end this conversation on my end because we clearly can’t communicate effectively on this issue. As you can see below, other Terps fans offered rational explanations in response to my query. You try and offer explanations but then just choose to insult me.

You took a swipe at Maryland fans, I’m defending them. What did you expect? Clearly, you can dish it out but you can’t take it. Your original post was thoughtless, short sighted and dumb. That’s what happens when you categorize an entire section of people based on the actions of a VERY small minority.
by Terptown on Oct 21, 2009 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
What you don't seem to understand
Is that all you’re doing is making yourself seem like a jerk. All you’re doing is making anybody WANT to think those things about you. We’ve all pretty much stated we didn’t really have much of an opinion on the matter, that we were speaking in broad terms and that it wasn’t an entirely educated guess nor even a damning statement. But what you’ve done is made me, someone who had no opinion on “Terps” to begin with get the opinion that you’re trying so desperately hard to dispel.
Like I said previously, I feel that you’re incorrectly arguing something you’ve likely had to argue before. Save your statements for outspoken terp-haters—that ain’t us.
by Ninjames on Oct 21, 2009 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Incorrect
You don’t know anything about me either. I’m doing no such thing. I simply find it remarkable when people paint a picture of an entire section of people based on the actions of a very small minority. It’s ridiculous and small minded.
As for not being Terp haters — that’s good. We’re delighted to hear it. As a Redskin fan, I can very sincerely say I was way more upset about the 49er loss to Minnesota (ugh, that killed me) than the woeful Redskins losing to the Lions. I’m rooting like crazy for your team.
We love our Terps here, and we hope you’ll love them too. They’re very, very fine young men, they’ll work very hard for you and will represent your city (and my Alma Mater) with dignity and class.
We hope you’ll be as proud of them as we are.

Now you're just ridiculous.
“YOU DON’T KNOW ME, HOKAY? YOU DON’T KNOW ME!”
We painted NO picture and you are the one inferring and assuming, claiming to understand what our basis was on anything. Calm down and go back to cheering for your team, but I hope you know from this day on any time I hear the word “Terps” I’ll be reminded of the one fan I’ve ever come into contact with—you, and it wont be a good memory. I’ll shake my head and I’ll smile. Simply because you had to include that first part in your response. Had you said those last three things all would have been good, but you chose to keep it going by defending yourself when there’s nothing to defend. Just drop it and consider us convinced we DONT. HATE. YOU. GUYS.

Now I’m suppose to care what you think of me? .Just relax skippy, I don’t know you or anything about you and I could care less what you think of me or the Terps or anything else for that matter.

So, no, I don’t care what you think, not at all, not even a little bit. And you most certainly shouldn’t care what I think about anything. I didn’t care for the OP, I’ve made my reasons very clear. Your objections to my posts don’t change my opinion or my perspective on the OP, and it’s not going to.

Terps
Big Terps fan here, and I guess I can see your point, but I’d rather be a real fan than a fair weather one (Patriots) or follow a team that even though I didn’t go to school there (Notre Dame fans, Duke fans, etc.)
Maryland is just annoyed that they have a traditional basketball school (with arguably as good of pedigree as Duke), but the networks like ESPN are all over the Blue Devils. I mean, last I checked Duke hasn’t exactly won anything recently either, but they play probably 50% of their games on ESPN. They tend to have 5-7 high school all-americans on their basketball team and lose in the 2nd round of the tournament.
UNC is great, but hadn’t done CRAP for about a decade after Dean Smith.
Gary Williams will have the Terps playing at a high level this year – probably sweet 16. They were in the round of 32 last year, and they only graduated 1 guy (Dave Neal). They return everyone, add two PFs as freshmen, and retained Grevis Vasquez.
Plus the “Fear The Turtle” slogan is meant for the purpose of IRONY. Of course a turtle isn’t a dangerous animal…some people are too literal – and therefore, since they can’t think outside the box, are morons.
