Week 7 Prediction Games

We're back for Week 7 and the 49ers are back on the card.  Once again, thanks to everybody for following the formatting rules.  We had one late entrant who didn't for one game and wasn't given credit for it.  So, make sure to follow the rules.  Since people have been doing such a good job with the formatting, I've moved the rules to the bottom of the post.  Keep up the good work with the formatting and all will be well in the world.

There are some really intriguing matchups this week and I feel like we had to leave some good games on the table.  My favorite matchup this week might be either Minnesota-Pittsburgh, or the Cedric Benson Bowl: Chicago-Cincinnati.  Umm, yea, anyways.  Remember that if you miss out on the early games you can always submit predictions for games not yet started.

Also, just a reminder that as always all times listed are pacific.  On to the games.

49ers @ Houston - Sunday 10/25 10:00am

Philadelphia @ Washington - MNF 10/26 5:30pm

Arizona @ NY Giants - SNF 10/25 5:20pm

Minnesota @ Pittsburgh - Sunday 10/25 10:00am

Buffalo @ Carolina - Sunday 10/25 1:05pm

Chicago @ Cincinnati - Sunday 10/25 1:15pm

IMPORTANT NEW RULE

Up until now, folks have just posted their scores in any particular fashion, although howtheyscored has made requests for a specific format.  Given the amount of time and effort howtheyscored has to put into determining the final results, I am implementing a requirement for how to format your scores (based on the spreadsheet howtheyscored has created).  If you fail to follow this format, any incorrectly formatted scores for the week will be disqualified.  The format is "Team A @ Team B: A score - B score."  That basically is visitor @ home: visitor score - home score."  Here's an example of how to do it:

Using Arizona @ NY GIants below, if you think NY Giants will win 24-14, here's how it HAS to look:

Arizona @ NY Giants: 14 - 24

If you think Arizona will win 24-14, it needs to appear as this:

Arizona @ NY Giants: 24 - 14

If you'd like you can bold the winner (Arizona @ NY Giants: 14 - 24), but that is not required (although probably a good backup in case you reversed the score by accident.

If you make a mistake in the formatting I'll reply to your score reminding you to correct it.  To correct it, simply reply to your picks and post them in the correct format.  Do not post your scores again at the bottom of the thread.  I'll make sure and include these directions each week so people do not forgot and lose out on points.  As I mentioned above, we're doing this to make howtheyscored's life easier in figuring out the scores.  The # of regular commenters has increased dramatically since last season, so we're anticipating a greater # of prediction contest participants.  While this is a new rule, I don't think it's all that difficult for folks to follow it.

If anybody has any questions at all about this, or anything else, feel free to email me at ninersnation@gmail.com.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

As you can see below, I’m a big fan of picking one or two games to predict against the grain. The surprising upset, unpredictable defensive struggle, or uncharacteristic offensive showdown can net you some points if you pick and choose your spots wisely.

Although it’s a little sad to say that my prediction for an offensive explosion from the Redskins is 16 points.

ok, i'll take the bait,

What are you doing?

From the looks of it, I’m skeptical, whatever it is… Washington will not put up 16 and minn/pitt will be much higher scoring. Then again, “that’s just, like, your opinion man.”

Chris Cohan- YOU'RE FIRED!

by bonbrillio on Oct 22, 2009 8:13 PM PDT up reply actions

It involves a combination of dumb yahoo stats (PF/PA, H/A Record, Opponents) and smart FO stats (pass defense vs. pass offense), with an edge given to either home teams or teams that I have a good feeling about. Then I fudge whatever score I got there (generally in the 20-25 range) up or down based on a combination of my gut and how everyone else’s predictions are trending. In games where predictions are coming in very heavily in a certain score range, I might try to pick a different range to see if I can catch lightning in a bottle.

It’s not a good strategy, sure. But it’s done me okay in the past.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

by howtheyscored on Oct 23, 2009 8:15 AM PDT up reply actions

WAS, for instance: the prediction range for Washington was very low, so I pushed their score higher in case everyone else is wrong. I also figure, “they can’t completely suck every week.” But then I couldn’t convince myself, so I kept them to almost all field goals and under 20. But more than 13!

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

by howtheyscored on Oct 23, 2009 8:18 AM PDT up reply actions

I hear that

There is probably more logic simply in picking against the tide of other predictions and going w/ your gut than even bothering w/ actual statistics (may seem counter intuitive).

I also do pick ‘em pools (picking every game, no spread) every week and the tie-breaker is the combined over/under for monday night… I’ve faired pretty well this year (12 pools thru 6 wks (2per wk) and Ive won 4 out of 12, against ~25 other people in each pool).

Ill be watching these scores to see if there is anything to this strategy of yours.

Chris Cohan- YOU'RE FIRED!

by bonbrillio on Oct 23, 2009 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions

You do all that for all your picks every week?

All I do is read the teams, go with my instant gut feeling and make up a score.

I wonder how our pick scores compare. Hmm…

"It came down like a punt, Coach!" - Josh Morgan

by shlecko on Oct 24, 2009 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions

good strategy

a few weeks ago, when the colts were playing the titans, my gut told me the colts would win 31-7. but instead i used a mathematical formula where you cross-reference each team’s Points For with their opponent’s Points Against and i predicted the colts to win 27-17. final score: colts 31 titans 9. i would have been 4 off.

I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.

I don’t do that every week. Most weeks I check to see what upset I want, then I check my gut, and then I look at how the predictions are trending to see if I can take advantage of anything, and then I pick my score based on those things.

I only go through all this work when my picks start sucking or when I get to the playoffs.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

Away team always listed first, and winning team in bold

49ers @ Houston – 24-20

Philadelphia @ Washington – 30-10

Arizona @ NY Giants – 18-30

Minnesota @ Pittsburgh – 28-24

Buffalo @ Carolina – 10-18

Chicago @ Cincinnati – 28-24

Yes, I know it’s late. But 6 exact scores get me 60 points, right?

No strategy

I actually have no real strategy for picking other than gut instinct, or some reasonable level of stupidity. Take your pick because that might explain my current ranking:

Arizona @ NY Giants: 21 – 31
Minnesota @ Pittsburgh: 17 – 19

by SpurredOn on Oct 25, 2009 6:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Ya

I find it hard figuring out the last score of the game. Is it going to be a garbage TD, garbage FG, 2-4 point lead affecting the final drive, etc. So far I’ve had a number of games were I had the outcome and circumstance pegged only to have points at the end negatively screw away from my prediction. It makes the game fun and frustrating.

not impossible

6 field goals and one touch down with the extra point made = 25
or
2 touchdowns with extra points made + 3 fields goals + 1 safty = 25
or
2 touchdowns with failed extra points + 1 Touch down with a made extra point = 25

And those are just the easy ways to score 25 points!
