Shawntae Spencer Our #1 Corner?
I debated on making this a fanshot or a fanpost, but decided on the latter due to the poll options.
I have watched tape on Shawntae Spencer all season long and it appears he is our #1 corner and the closest thing we have to a shutdown guy. In my opinion he is having a pro bowl caliber season making the coaches decision to start him over Bly look like a no brainer in hindsight. I am wondering if the coaching staff have had internal discussions on swapping him with Nate Clements? By this i mean putting Spencer on the other teams #1 receiver and letting Clements cover the #2 option. This would do a number of things.
1. First it would all but admit the 49ers made a mistake in paying Clements what they did
2. It would allow Clements to succeed by covering and most likely shutting down a lesser receiver in the other teams #2 option.
3. It would put our best cover guy on the opponents best receiver. Let me ask you it this way. Would you rather see Clements or Spencer cover Andre Johnson?
4. It would also give Spencer a larger role in the defense and allow him to excel as our #1 defensive back. Considering he is still young i would like to see how he handles being the man in the secondary
5. It would also give Spencer more national coverage and allow him the ability to vie for a pro bowl slot that i believe he has earned up to this point.
This larger question is this, Are the 49ers ready to admit the mistake they made with Clements? Or do they have too much invested in him to demote him to the 2nd CB spot?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

I agree to some extent...
That Shawntae Spencer should be the guy the 49ers look to for covering the deep pass. But you can’t deny Nate Clements has been a hard hitter and an all-around guy when it comes to stopping the tight ends and running backs. I do think, however, that Clements is less versatile when it comes to man-to-man coverage.

Spencer is the better cover guy but clements is the better all around corner

Spencer has exceeded all expectations....and them some
But keep in mind he’s been up against No.2 and No. 3 WRs all season.
He’s done a great job so far, but I’d wait and see how he does against a healthy Boldin before we start putting him on the opposing team’s No.1.

Clements has taken opposing #1 WRs so far.
Nate is great in press coverage, none better, imho. But he can be beat deep with speed and double moves. Instead of designating a #1 CB, I’d just let Spencer and Nate take whomever comes their way in man cover instead of having Nate move around to cover the top guy. Makes it less predictable for the receivers.

There really is no such thing as a #1 corner
Clements plays the left side and Spencer plays the right side, so whichever receiver lines up on their side is who they cover. They both end up covering the #1 WR sometimes and the #2/3 WR’s sometimes.

I thought I saw Clemments following Roddy White during the ATL game.

I think he might some
But I’m pretty sure he just plays a side for most of the game. I’m not at home right now but I can take a look at some of my recordings when I get the chance.
The one thing I can remember is that Roddy White tackled Dre Bly after his interception, so it seems Bly was covering White on that play at least.

The INT
Yeah Bly was covering Roddy White (he was in the slot)

No, Brendan. There is such a thing as a #1 corner.
Just not in this day and age. These days, DCs try to create schemes in which 3-4 people can cover the other team’s best WR as opposed to back in the day, when they had one teams best CB cover the other team’s best WR, and that CB was considered the team’s #1 corner.

I'd prefer they just not flop the corners and keep them to one side
So each gets a chance to guard the #1 WR of an opponent. I also don’t think SIng cares about the monetary value of a contract when deciding who plays or what the gameplan is. Otherwise, wouldn’t Smith be QB and Bly named the starter instead of Spencer?

Next year...
Walt Harris will be back next year also. Maybe rotating him in for Clements and swinging Clements back to FS would and moving Goldson over to SS. Could spare us from having to use a draft pick until the following season. We also will still have Reggie Smith and Tarel Brown as real solid backups.
Spencer- LCB
Harris- RCB
Clements- FS
Goldson- SS
nickel- either Tarel Brown or Reggie Smith
Idk…just food for thought

Gotta love Harris
But he’s gonna be 36 and coming off a torn ACL. Highly doubt he’s gonna be an every down CB

Clements is an asset when he plays close to the line of scrimmage....
Good at reading screens, quick passes to the WR.. etc

Usually
SS cover TE’s in the NFL. But in a case like this weekend, it could benefit us to have a guy to cover Owens besides Lawson. I hope Lawson can keep up. I am sort of nervous having Roman back there this weekend. I’d almost rather have Curtis Taylor or whoever…

#1 Corner?
I’m not sure how to answer this question because I don’t have all the game film in front of me (and a regular recording of the game itself is not enough to show fans what’s really happening). But! I will say that from what I’ve seen in both the preseason and regular season games thus far, defenses seem to pick on Clements a lot with their number 1 wideouts, and he hasn’t done a great job at ‘shutting’ them down. $80 million dollars isn’t supposed to let Roddy White break away for 2 long touchdowns, you know what I mean? The first one was just pathetic. You could see in the replay that Clements was playing soft, and relying heavily on a deep Dashon Goldson. White broke the route inside instead of to the outside where Clements was playing, and that resulted in a TD. The second one was equally as pathetic. Clements played man-to-man coverage and completely ignored the fact that there was no safety help to the outside edge of the field where the ball was thrown to. Well, the ball was thrown, Clements gambled by going for the ball and he missed it, and because there was no safety help, Clements got burned yet again for the YAC and eventual TD.
I really don’t understand the thought process behind the game-play of Clements. It’s as if he’s lacking the fundamentals. To my understanding of the game, you play man-to-man whenever you have safety help because that way if you get burned, you have the safety to make up for your mistakes. On the other hand, you play soft coverage (i.e. approximately 10 yards away from receiver) if you have no safety help because if you get beat, there’s no one down the field to help you.
The reason I bring up these two plays is because I think they are indicative of why Clements is not our #1 corner. I can cite plenty more plays, but it would take too much time. We need to start treating Clements like Zito. He deserves a demotion.
Back to your question… I’m not sure if Spencer is the 49ers #1, but I would like to say with a lot of confidence, that Spencer would do a much better job than Clements in covering the other team’s #1 wideout. Many people seem to forget that Spencer had a solid, solid season in his 05-06 campaign. He was healthy that year and produced 4 interceptions, 19 passes deflected (19!!!), and had over 80 tackles. This year is the first he’s really been healthy ever since that season, so I say why not give him the keys to the #1 spot. Coach Sing should give him the opportunity to line up against the other team’s best WR on every down. We should remind ourselves that the 49ers said publicly that they would line up Spencer against Fitzgerald in week 1, which they did throughout the game, and the results were amazing. (For further proof that Clements isn’t our #1 corner, look at the 40 yard pass to Jeremy Urban in the 1st quarter of that game. Guess who was covering him? Clements.)

That first TD
Was zone coverage. Completely on Goldson, though in a zone you expect some pressure on the QB within four seconds. Our rush got zero pressure so it’s almost as much on them as Goldson. But not Clements.

Explain to me again
In zone coverage, what is Clements’ role in covering Roddy White? I looked back at the entire play, and Clements was lined up against him.
Are you saying that in zone coverage, for that particular play, Clements wasn’t supposed to be responsible for White?
I admit I don’t understand everything there is to know about football, but I think Clements was supposed to be covering White. No? I just looked back at the play a few seconds ago, and NO OTHER receiver was to the left or middle side of the field, so there was no reason for Clements to just let White get that much separation from him. That was his guy. I agree Goldson played it horribly, but c’mon… let’s not let Clements off the hook for this one. Again, Clements gave up so much separation that by the time White caught the ball, Clements was literally 10 yards behind him. The only explanation for that is that Clements simply sucks.
by Waiting4JoshMorgan on Oct 24, 2009 5:38 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If I'm correct
And not saying I am, Clements takes White for the amount of time that White is in Nate’s zone responsibility. He is then passes off to the next zone which was Goldson. I say this without having the play to watch right now. Goldson is likely, in this zone coverage, to not let anyone get behind him. He not only allowed White behind him he lost his angle and trailed him both in depth and breadth of the field, if I recall. Either way, in a zone you’re only responsible for a player(s) when they’re in your zone, plus keeping down and distance in mind as to how deep you drop.
I believe Atlanta only ran a two man route and went with maximum protection which makes this all the more embarrassing. They probably expected us to blitz out of the timeout and instead we rushed four and played zone. They kept eight in to block and viola.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.

Clements is an excellent CB
I don’t know why so many people are advocating his move to SS. Yes, he is weak in terms of covering speedy receivers, but he does many things well as a CB. One of the best at jamming receivers, great at covering inside and short routes, an excellent tackler (especially for CB) and great at forcing fumbles. I know he can get beat vertical routes, but besides that he is an elite CB
