Are the 49ers Built to Run?

Hi everyone,

First off, I'm really excited for the game this week. Bye weeks may be good for the team, but it sure sucks for the fans!

Anyway, I guess I'm buying into all Crabtree hype going on lately, and am starting to wonder whether the 49er's strength is their running game. Honestly, 49ers have been awful running the ball. Seems to me that the team beat the Cardinals only when they started relying on the pass, and then did the same thing in Minnesota before the whole Favre affair (2 late 80 yard drives to take the lead). I think the Seattle game was a fluke, because the running game has been pretty bad. I'm not sure how much Frank Gore will help if the line doesn't get better.

Seems to me that the 49ers should be a pass-first team, especially with all the talent at WR and TE. Of course, this is all contingent on O-Line play, but I think the 49ers are better at the pass then run.

Thoughts?

All NFL teams should strive for balance.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

and most are typically stronger running or passing.

Thanks for the insight.

To answer the posters question – I think the 49ers have been unquestionably better on offense when they have been willing to lean more heavily on the short passing game. The offensive line is nowhere closed to good enough to run at people successfully when they expect it, and they’ve shown that over the course of the season. Outside of Gore’s two long runs, which I think are closer to freak plays that indicative of the offense, the team has been averaging well below 3 yards per carry – not good.

Are we built to run?

NO.

Are we built to get into a shoot out passing?

NO.

What are we? A mediocre offense that hopes to hang it’s hat on the defense.

We're a draft and a good FA year away from a very competitive team!

I agree...

but that’s asking a lot don’t you think? We are like 4 starters away from being SOLID. RT, Guard, QB, and either SS or NT. That’s a LOT to ask in one year.

Not really

But we are weak in more positions and that’s a lot to ask

Safetys definitely suck

See Daniels’ TD for evidence. Bite on play fake? Nope. Double cover the underneath crossing route and leave the guy jogging into your zone? Yep!

However, we need more pressure on D and less pressure on O. We need guards and a nose tackle most of all.

You have been DFiBrillated.

Until we get out O-line sorted out, we're not built to run

Personally, I’m very curious to see how much of the problem was Rachal. It’s disappointing because he looks like he should be a very solid run-blocker …

But if your RG isn’t getting it done, you’re not going to have a power running game.

Chilo

He almost seems lost. Like he doesn’t know his assignments. He seems physically talented but just lost mentally.

I could be wrong but

i think the line could do better myself. i’m not a x’s & o’s master so your goin to have to bare with me. I jus know what i see. first the line has showed at times that they can give hill time & open some holes for the runnin game. don’t get me wrong I’m not sayin it was consistent but in chunks. coach sing himself has said that they have the best players on the field. i’m pretty sure that the h.c. would recognise talent that best suits our team. he’s been doin a decent job already. one thing that gets me is last year people were sayin that how good or decent chlio was playin his rookie year & this year he’s missin assignments bad & partly lettin the line down.

so that had me thinkin if it has somethin to do wit the line coach. i will admit jus like everyone else that the line has looked horrible for the most part. i’m not totally sure but i think the line coach we have, this is his first year wit us. i read on his resume that when he left miami or baltimore(can’t remember which one) that the line he had was in the low twenties. who ever took over got them to the low teens with basically the same player. so he’s making me wonder if it’s the players or the line coach.

second people knock coffee but i think he is doing a decent job runnin. he may have miss some holes but he has also hitting some too & he’s just a rookie. look what he did in the preseason, the chunks he got during the regular season even in the viking game, their line got him 85yds(35 on one play) on round 20-25carries while coffee got round 74 on 24 carries. take that one play & our line almost did a better job against their dline.

lastly i think some of it falls on the oc. runnin when people know it is comin is stupid. the only time that’s a good idea is when a team is beat down physically & mentally. like what the 80’s niners use to do when they were winning late & the opponent couldn’t hang n-e-ways. not in the beginning when they’re ready for it. 60-40 runnin is a coo ratio if you know how to mix the playcalling up. that’s jus me & i know someone will let me know if i’m wrong. member no x’s & o’s for me, jus what i see.

go niners!!! airday allday

"All the talent at wide receiever."

Seriously?

Trust, noone in the league would use the term “All the talent at wide receiver” about the 49ers.

Maybe if Crabtree develops as he should and you get a real #2 threat.

You are a running team with one of the best backs in football. Fix your O-line problems, then run to setup big strike to crabtree. That’s how you are built.

i agree with TF

talent at receiever and 49ers don’t go together, it’s all about the O-line doing their job for the running back and opening things up for the receicevers to make big plays, yeah we got this rookie WR who i hope play better than he held out and we have Mr. Davis at
TE, but the running game is key to open up the pass, not saying we have a great passer but have to work with what we have, all and all, get the O-line together and i think we will be ok from here on out…….
