Official Michael Crabtree predictions

Alright folks, tomorrow is the big day.  The debut of the 49ers prized first round pick, WR Michael Crabtree.  At this point I really have no idea what to expect from him.  However, I know folks would like to make their own predictions.  So let's just cut to the chase and let folks throw out predictions for what will happen in this first game.  In fact, if you want to make predictions for the rest of the season for Crabtree specifically, you can definitely do that as well in this thread.

Bodog put together odds and have given the following over/unders for Crabtree's performance tomorrow and for the full season:

Michael Crabtree - Total Receiving Yards in the 2009 NFL Regular Season
Over/Under                    349.5

Michael Crabtree– Total TD's in the 2009 NFL Regular Season
Over/Under                    2.5

Who will have more Receiving Yards in the 2009 NFL Regular Season?
Darrius Heyward-Bey      Even
Michael Crabtree            -130

I'd imagine it's a sucker bet at this point to think DHB will finish with more yards than Crabtree.  DHB may develop into a fine receiver but it has definitely not happened yet.  And it may be quite a while given the Raiders many problems.

Also, the predictions can be either straight stats for tomorrow and the season, or more descriptive in nature.  It's up to you.  I personally need to think on this.  At this point I think people could put just about anything and it could be reasonable or insane.  We really have very little to base our predictions on, other than his impressive numbers in college and theocal support he's received from 49ers coaches and players.  So have at it.

Not a big believer in the Crabman.
This guy is going to have to show me a lot, for me to jump on the back of the hayride.
I hope I’m wrong.
I think the early start and all the buzz and hype coming out of practice about this guy, is all for the sake of the Texans. We’re making sure that they have to consider our passing game.
Gore will be the hero tommorrow.

by Krowley on Oct 24, 2009 8:24 AM PDT reply actions

nope to gore

Silly niners, Why does everyone love this Gore guy so much, he is just going to get injured again. You need someone durable like AD. As for Crabtree, he will be terrible. He might have a decent game here and there, but never a good one. Minnesota’s Percy Harvin is the best WR to come out of the draft. He is currently in the running for rookie MVP. You all might as well join the Vikings quest for victory

Trust

Mike Singletary:

I think, for us, Crabtree coming in the way that he’s come in, a tremendous attitude, a tremendous work ethic, been doing everything he can to get on the field and I think the most important thing for us is to get him out there as soon as we can and as much as we can and see what he can and cannot do.

Shaun Hill:

Yeah, I can see that he has special talents without a doubt. He brings a lot of playmaking ability, he brings a big target and I’ve been pretty impressed in the way that he’s been able to pick up everything as well.

OC Jimmy Raye:

He conceptualizes football extremely well. He’s a quick study that way. It’s just a matter of him and the total flow of the call and the quarterback having some feeling that he knew what he was doing and we hasten that process a little bit by giving him a little more because he showed that he could handle a little more.

CB Tarell Brown:

He’s got real strong hands and he fights for the ball. I like that about him. Great receivers have strong hands and they really fight for the ball, so I think he’s on the right path.

Trust what the coaches and players are saying.

5 receptions, 80 yards, 1TD,
and yeah, I’m probably overly optimistic.

by 10forTech on Oct 24, 2009 9:33 AM PDT up reply actions

I'd be satisfied

with 5 or 6 receps, around 60 yards. What I’ll be watching more closely is how much attention he gets from the defense. If he can draw enough focus to help free up Bruce/Davis/Morgan, I’ll consider it a good performance. ..if Hill can get the ball to them. Also, if he helps loosen the defense enough to help Gore.
In short, despite all the hype, I’m hoping Crabtree can be a productive addition to the offense. He doesn’t need to be the star (at this point), just a cog in a better machine.

Back to earlier predictions...

I still think these numbers will hold true. I see something like this as his 2009 stat line:

nce 1994, average stats for Biletnikoff winners who started at least one game: 9 starts, 729.9 yards, 6.5 TD

As for tomorrow only, I am predicting 3 receptions for 45 yards but a lock for a TD.

by 49ers Rule on Oct 24, 2009 9:24 AM PDT reply actions

nice

I mean it’d be nice if he threw up a 1460 yard, 13 TD season (which, prorated for 11 games would equal about 1000 yards and 9 tds). Of course we know that that’s not going to happen with Jimmy Raye as coordinator.

Season Predictions for Mr. Crabtree

600 receiving yards (in other about 60 per game) and 4 or 5 TDs on about 45-50 receptions.

I’d love to see him get around 800 yards and 7 TDs, but I’ll settle for 600 and 4 or 5.

Tomorrow, I think Crabtree will have about 60 yards receiving and find his way into the end zone in his debut and I think it will be on the team’s first possession.

Isn't that being a bit conservative for a two time Biletnikoff winner?

I am thinking the OLine is going to play better so that Crabtree and Gore will both get at least 1500 yards… and we can’t forget V Davis with his 24 TDs

Actually i think 4 to 6 receptions a game and at least 1 TD every other game would work.
That would work out to around 55 receptions and 5 or 6 TDs.

i bet he breaks off at least one nice long reception and has some smaller ones over the rest of the day… i’ll say 4 catches for 80 yards

by JoeO on Oct 24, 2009 11:07 AM PDT reply actions

I'm a bit more pessimistic

5 targets – 3 catches – 41 yards. He gains the majority of his yardage on one beautiful play that we will all be salivating over for the following week while dreaming of things to come.

As much as I’d like to think that Crabtree will revolutionize the niners passing attack, I don’t see that happening in one game. Should take him a few weeks (at least) to get his legs back. I look to the Titans game, which would be his week 3, for him to have a big game.

by Spencer L on Oct 24, 2009 11:17 AM PDT reply actions

Crabtree- 3 catches for 70 yards with his longest being a 40 yarder to the house. 1 TD
Bruce- 5 catches for 30 yards
V. Davis- 4 catches for 50 yards 1 TD
Gore- 4 catches for 40 yards
Morgan- 1 catch for 10 yards

Gore- 20 carries for 90 yards 1 TD
Norris- 2 carries 10 yards
Coffee- 1 carry for 3 yards

Nedney 2/2 (31,42)

Anyhow, that’s my total prediction including Crabtree

U don't think Coffee gets more than one carry?

I’m thinking with Gore coming off an injury, they’ll be sure to split a few more of his plays with Coffee. I’m thinking Gore gets 20 and Coffee gets 5 or 6. If we’re winning, we’ll be running in the 4th and will have more TOP all game.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Oct 24, 2009 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Blowout

If the ball bounces our way a few times and those few times lead to 7 each time and it’s a blowout (blowout meaning beating them by 21 or more), he may see 5-10. I see your concern with the injury but if Gore is 100% Sing will keep the best 11 on the field 99% of the time assuming it’s a close game. To compromise having Coffee on the field…particularly that he’s our primary KR guy now, doesn’t see too probable if Gore is doing well. He may come in a couple times to give Gore a breather if he bust a few long run’s out though.

by Drew Kerr on Oct 24, 2009 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought Sing stated yesterday that Walker is still the primary KO returner?

Coffee had 9 carries at AZ so I’m thinking he’ll get at least a handful in a close game or game that we lead late. I believe Gore is healthy but I don’t see Sing wanting his first action in four weeks to require him carrying 25+ times in addition to receptions.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

Season Prediction for Crabtree: 11 games, 70 REC, 900 YDS, 81.8 YDS/G, 12.9 PER REC, 10 TD’s

by Drew Kerr on Oct 24, 2009 11:59 AM PDT reply actions

Week and Season predictions

5 catches for 60 yards. This includes a couple really short 3-8 yard passes, a couple 10 yard gains, and a beautiful 25-30 yard gain that everyone will be excited about. Also there will be atleast one block he’ll make that we’ll see Gore run by the defensive back with Crabtree blocking. I don’t expect any penalties from him but maybe 1 drop early in the game, with a defender really up in his face. I think VD, Morgan, and Gore will get any of the touchdowns this game.

Season- there’s no reason to think that these stats will not continue on. They will average out per week even much higher. Whatever he gets this game has a good chance of being the lower end of his production. So I think 55 catches, 880 yards, 7 touchdowns for the season is good.

by fortyniners on Oct 24, 2009 12:03 PM PDT reply actions

It won't be just his catching that will be interesting to watch ...

… but also his blocking, which might even be one of the reasons he’s been rushed into action as a starter so soon after signing. I remember a great line from Matt Maiocco, even before Crabtree ended his hold-out, when MM said that if the Niners could get MC signed, they would have a WR that blocked like a TE, and a TE (VD) that blocks like a left tackle. So in a run-first, run-second, offense, you wonder if his receiving ability is not the only reason they want him in so soon.

"This could be another Very Special Team" ... Superbowl winning Niners lineman Dan Audick ...

by LondonNiner on Oct 24, 2009 12:09 PM PDT reply actions

3 catches for sure

I mean, they’ll have at least one bubble screen, one slant and one of some other type. I’ll be conservative and say 3 catches for 29 yards. My hope is he helps to open up single coverage on Davis and Morgan, pushes that eight and ninth man out of the box for Gore’s running, and maybe Jason Hill gets some reps and has a catch or two.

I see us winning and that likely means a successful running game with 30+ team carries and efficient passing game that spreads the ball around.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by jpgarfunkle on Oct 25, 2009 6:34 AM PDT reply actions

the bottom line is the niners are not ready to be a playoff team they just are not getting it done in a lot of areas ( game plan, pass rush, big plays on defense down field, running game) mediorcre teams do what they want with the niners that is not a playoff team 7-9 at best again

by bluecap on Oct 25, 2009 12:08 PM PDT reply actions

I think they are adjusting and Mike Singletary is aware that changes

need to be made when they should be made. So the team is improving and has talent and drive in most of the positions to be a better than average team. Plus there are pieces in there that make it a way better tha naverage team with some of the defensive athletes and offensive playmakers.
So as long as they are improving, that will change your prediction about them every week or 2. So if they are able to win the division at 9-7, they don’t have to be 14-2 to reach the super bowl, as long as they get everything going at the right time, which is in 2 months+.

by fortyniners on Oct 26, 2009 2:14 AM PDT up reply actions

A couple of really close predictions by some of us. Good job (except that no W)

This will make it much more interesting for next game since now we see what I think is his lower end of the production from this game, as he will only get better. Plus after we know who the starting QB and what the offensive strategy will be…
