They've lost three games
It’s tough to say they should have won the Atlanta game because they were dominated on both sides of the ball. And for this one, it’s totally appropriate to focus on the second half if it resembles how this team will look in the future.

I"m just sayin, people really shouldn’t be bitching about losing 3 straight. They almost stole one against a team they should probably have gotten stomped by, then fell apart against ATL, and finally made some personnel changes and looked like a different team in teh 2nd half against Texas EVEN THOUGH THEY DIDN’T PREPARE FOR ALEX SMITH OMGZ

They really have to get their heads together for the Offense, they just kept shooting themselves in the foot with the delay of game penalty’s. that was a big 4th and 5 to 4th and 10

Agreed. Three penalties of that type (even if one was because too many people on the field?) is pretty unacceptable.

A QB with no game time in two years. A rookie WR in his first NFL game. An o-line with Pashos out hurt, Sims in for Staley on two plays (due to helmet problem) and that’s what hurt us the most. Alex got pressured quick on that final play. He certainly has nothing to hang his head about.

Good game guys.
As someone who doesn’t have dog in the SF qb hunt I would just say this.
Don’t get too excited about Smith just yet.
He played a GREAT half of football but remember that the Texan D game planned for Shaun Hill and a running team. Shifting to a spread Offense with Smith is a HUGE adjustment for a D to make mid game.
Not trying to rain on your QB parade.
But lets see how he does next week when a team actually prepares for him specifically.
Non the less, he played very well. little rusty in the clock managment area, but not unexpected since he hasn’t played much.

It's not that it's hard to change up your defense from a package standpoint.
But when you gameplan all week and watch film for hours a day of specific plays the other team runs, and then you design packages based on their packages, there is a huge difference when that all changes.
If you don’t understand that then I don’t know what to say.
Ask anyone here who has payed football and they will tell you.
It’s not like I’m saying he didn’t play well. Smith played well.
Just saying lets see how he does when a Defense is planning on him playing and the 49ers running a spread offense.

Back in 07
after the Rams game where our offense looked terrible, I asked Jeremy Green’s podcast (dennis greens son) why the 49ers didn’t go to a spread offense to accomodate Smith’s talents. He said it would be impossible because not only would smith have to change, but the WRs and RBs and Oline would all have to change and that would be “impossible” for them.
Well, obviously it isn’t I really think that people inside the game make it way more complicated than it needs to be.

True, the Texans game plan did not factor in for Smith, but also we
generally have low expectations for Alex as he tends to overthrow on the high side, then hangs his head and mopes…
Completely different looking Alex. He was throwing nice spirals and seemed to have a lot of confidence the whole way thru.

I’m not discounting the fact that he’s had a great game. But most QB’s that have come in relief guns blazing in relief end up being big time busts once teams scout them adequately. My hats off to Smith for playing well but I’m not proclaiming him the future QB from when performance especially since he’s had a history of stinking it up.

My take
Smith just outplayed Hill, not ifs ands or buts about it. He gives us the best chance to win, especially since we are not better formatted for him.. We have the WR’s, and TE , and the RB to be a GREAT team.. If Smith shows consistency, this is our division. We are the team that showed up in the 2nd half… The first half is Hill, which was EXACTLY what we have seen all season, poor offense.
Defense did a pretty good job IMO.. When your offense puts you on the field after 3 and outs like they did in the first half, it would be tough to get stops.
Back to the drawing board.

I don't even know what to say
This offense now has a direction. Raye finally played to the players strengths. You can say they didnt gameplan for Smith, but had to throw the whole 2nd half. So Alex Smith throwing like that with our running game, Great Offense.
by ckurt49 on Oct 25, 2009 1:19 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Alex Smith
As sad as it was to see that INT on the final drive, I think it’s safe to say he’s got the arm to be the team’s QB. The play calling seemed better when he was in the game, but maybe that was just the fact that Smith can hit the deeper routes.
VD getting 3 TDs? Are you serious!? What a game by our big game playmaker. Smith is the best chance we have at winning, not Hill. Thank goodness we found that out now, and not 4 weeks from now. I wish the coaching was better (especially after a bye week) and the delay of game penalties were the killers. Not sure who to pin that on, but the coaching staff needs to be yelling for a T.O. on that last one on 4th and 5 that’s for sure. We had enough time to pick up the first, spike it, and still get into FG range without any T.O.s. Instead, Smith had to force a ball and throw an INT because of the longer distance we needed.
DAMN! Good comeback, but bad coaching. Singletary needs to grow up fast, we can’t be excusing this type of performance any more.

I think it’s safe to say that Crabtree will have a 50 catch 600+ yards season in 11 games, thats if Hill is starting. If Smith is starting catches will slightly improve by 10-15, but yards will go up to 800+,

As a 9er fan for a number of years
One who moved to SF in part as a kid due to the 9ers and thinking a place that had them as a team would be kinda cool. I’m growing tired of seeing them tease us with possibilities and then not be able to carry thru. I have a lot of faith in my team and in Sing, yes I still do. I don’t have much faith in the other coaches though. The Rayesin is wholly unimaginiative and pretty much useless. The O Line coach based on his resume and what we see now is not that good. I just am kind of tired of being one of those people that works like a mother fucker all week and hopes for some glimmer of hope on the weekend to only be met with a 50-50 team.

We could have won this game actually if the Texans hadn’t scored that 2nd touchdown right after Arnaz Battle dropped the ball due to the sun on him.
All in all, it’s a loss but it wasn’t that bad of a loss.

Smith played
his first few years with no O-line. Now he’s got half a line.
I think Singletary isn’t a fool. He knows the handoff to Gore up the middle isn’t working. It will be interesting to see what kind of game Raye calls next week. It’s clear that the conservative playcalling with Hill wasn’t working. I don’t think Smith will have to sling it like he had to this week, but something in between could be effective.
If he starts next Sunday it’ll be in the toughest game on the schedule, so it’ll be a real test for A. Smith and the Niners.
And don’t Crabtree suddenly look good.

Imagine
we were playing down the whole time.
If from the start, we could have a more succesfful running game if we have a successful passing game.
So the run game could have opened up the game even more…

Guess what we need to do in the next NFL draft?
How about going after a #1 rated quarterback!!!!
by KY49erfan on Oct 25, 2009 1:31 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Is there one in this upcoming draft?
I personally am not seeing one. I hope to be wrong but not seeing it.

We have to wipe it clean and get to the QB.
Clemments and Crew better get lots of rest.

Have you read his comments all week?
Do you realize who you are defending and the point he is trying to make right now?
by bignerd on Oct 25, 2009 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I did...
But I also read a whole lotta other stuff from 49er fans that were pretty ridiculous too.
I mean, the first half was awful. The change at QB really meant something today because they used a whole lot more offense than the usual “Take what they give us” stuff. Nobody saw that coming.
Well, we're waiting....

I didn't even see the first half.
I just think it’s comical when someone talks shit like that after his team wins
But then, I’m an asshole.

I think I’m one of the few ninersnation posters who isn’t encouraged by today’s outcome. Alex Smith just isn’t this good- remember the last few years?- and the defense didn’t look anything like it had in the first 4 weeks. We’ll win the games we should win from here on out (STL, etc.) but I don’t expect anything more than that.

Why not he took a step forward and thats a huge plus for us because if continues to play like this we could have (I dare say) our franchise qb

I just wanna say...
if I wasn’t an Alex Smith fanatic, at least I didn’t appreciate the treadmarks when Dick Nolan’s son had the keys to the bus.
I can’t say that even in his better games that he had the confidence I saw today. That was really impressive to me. He really took charge.
There were problems with time issues, but some of that seemed to be confusion, one was too many men on the field, another was the wide receivers not setting in time, but for seeing his first live bullets in two years, he looked pretty damned cool today. That was the best thing. Well, that and the three TD passes.

The results were fantastic
but you’re right- how he got them were what counts. Moving in the pocket, avoiding pressure, dropping the ball in tight spots, strong arm. He looked VERY impressive.

#1 Quarterback
Listen, I just want someone that is durable and can take a lick and move our offense. I see the quarterback position as the weakest for us. We have to start somewhere and I figure this is the best place.
by KY49erfan on Oct 25, 2009 1:42 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I disagree.
And frankly, if I’m Singletary I’m handing Alex Smith the keys to the rest of the season until he proves that he’s not for real.

#1 Quarterback
Well—where do you go from there if he doesn’t play out? What if he gets hurt again! I’m thinking about the future! We ought to load up on a #1 rated quarterback and bring him along with the system, at least we will have one in the stable if we need him.
