Any Positives Out There Niner Fans?

Hey guys I go as Livemaxxx and I need a favor. I do a weekly post on Stampedeblue, where I analyze a teams strength's and weaknesses. I try to be fair and add a little humor to it. I do this post against weekly Colt opponents and we have you guys this week! So far I have Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Patrick Willis, and that's it. Can you guy's point me to any other good players on your squad? Please be reasonable and try not add players cause of "Homerism"

LT Joe Staley & C Eric Heitmann are good lineman but not Pro Bowl level.
CB Shawntae Spencer has played at a very high level this year . . . could be Pro Bowl.

Actually, if I were you I would just study SS Mark Roman (#28) because Manning is just going to survey the field and throw against him the entire game.

SS Mark Roman (#28)

Roman is a free safety that wears #26? I mean, I know he’s not someone you’re going to care enough about to remember, but you’d think that his number has been called enough over the past few years (who the #$%@ just got beat deep…? Number 26!) to have it burned into your brain.

I have a memory that tries to block out the bad. In my defense it really hard to pick up his jersey number as he is laying on the ground and the camera is panning towards the WR’s TD celebration. I can usually tell it’s Roman without seeing the jersey. If it’s a pass that looks like it could have been defended and for some unexplainable reason wasn’t than Mark Roman was on coverage.

Roman has played more SS this season with Lewis’s brain getting scrambled often. Yet, it’s even sadder to think his natural role is FS.

by bignerd on Oct 25, 2009 8:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Agree on Smith and Lee

Spencer has been decent, but pro bowl level is probably pushing it.

And considering the OL’s play this season, it’s hard to call anybody good on it with a straight face. Heitmann has never been the same since the leg injury, and Staley gets pushed around at LT too often.

by dgriot on Oct 25, 2009 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe they just look like good lineman paired next to three turnstiles. I think Staley’s play has been pretty solid. His main job is pass protection. He has given up 3 sacks this season but two of them were early in the game against Jared Allen and Mario Williams on plays were it looked like Shaun Hill was designed to throw an immediate pass, instead just tucked it and took the sack.

What criticisms do you have against Spencer? Given the number of ball thrown it seems QBs have avoided throwing his direction. Andre Johnson only had 2 catches paired against him today.

by bignerd on Oct 25, 2009 8:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Thinking about it

You might be right on Spencer – I always picture him playing too soft in coverage and making mistakes, and haven’t given him enough credit for his turnaround and solid play this year as a starter. Knee jerk reaction on my part, my bad.

by dgriot on Oct 25, 2009 9:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I hope you are not trying to put words into my mouth. I don’t believe in shutdown corners.

The blogger wanted to know 49ers strengths. Spencer ought to get a mention because he’s played very well this season and could get recognized in the end. He’s not a ball hawk but he has been good in coverage, especially against big, physical receivers like Boldin and Johnson.

by bignerd on Oct 25, 2009 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Add Crabtree to your list of playmakers.

I was really skeptical before Sunday, but that kid is the real deal.

Fo-rizzle

Key 3rd down catches, excellent hands, even when knowing he’s gonna get drilled. A serious talent.

Some of the players

I wouldn’t count on Roman for the game yet, Lewis did have a scary injury but might be back for the Colts game and in that case Roman won’t start.

Definitely J.Smith and A.Lee.

I would add Josh Morgan at WR to be a sleeper pick at this point. Crabtree took some of his playing time, but this game Morgan had a better game at #3 WR than some of the games being #2.

Also CB Spencer as well. Had an excellent season so far, and he helped keep Texans and A.Johnson to a below average day, even though TE Daniels had a huge day.

DE Justin Smith (#94)

He’s relentless and he’s usually all over the place.

BTW: Is McKillop going to get his first NFL start next week?
Dallas Clark is going to have a career day……

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Oct 25, 2009 11:29 PM PDT reply actions

Gulp, good point

More than likely Scott won’t play a lot of snaps. Whens teams go to 3 WR sets the 49ers have brought in Roman for Spikes to increase their coverage ability (insert joke here). Unless another safety supplants Roman in practice he’ll back on the field playing that hybrid LB/SS role.

by bignerd on Oct 26, 2009 12:44 AM PDT up reply actions

The 49ers need to learn how to defend the TE

Dallas Clark (IMO) is much more dangerous than Owen Daniels because of the way the Colts use him.

Be afraid fellow niner fans, be very afraid…..

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Somebody should sign up for a "Texan Forever" account

And post some BS about how Daniels is unequivocally the best TE in the game.

Daniels

Daniels might not be the best TE, but he’s a very good TE. He’s improved each year and is looking really good this season (my primary football fantasy team thanks him).

I'm not saying he's not good

It amazes me how consistenly rude you are.

As for the tight end thing. When did I say that Owen Daniels is “unequivocally the best TE in the game.” PLEASE QUOTE ME. That’s right, you can’t. Because I never said that.

Once again, you twist my words and make some hyperbolic statement.

It’s unreal.

Owen Daniels is among the best tight ends in the game. That is indisputable. Is he the BEST tight end in the game? We will know at the end of the year.

I don’t know why accurately portraying what other people say is such a problem for you. I guess if something doesn’t “fit” your desired version of events, you just fix it so that it does.

When you're touting your TE and WR

That are in the “young and promising” category as being better than far, far more established and still very good players, that’s hyperbole.

Is Andre Johnson “very, very good?” Yes. Is Owen Daniels “very, very good?” Yes. But when I, and others, try to tell you that they need to show more to be considered better than Reggie Wayne and Tony Gonzalez, you get in a tizzy and call us haters. Andre Johnson still hasn’t strung together two 1000 yard seasons. Owen Daniels has not gone over 1000 yards once. They’re good, but let’s wait till they show some consistent excellent performance before calling them the best or better than other players who HAVE shown that consistency of excellence.

You don't have to IMO that

Clark is better.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Oct 26, 2009 2:07 AM PDT up reply actions

Wasn't a bad strategy

The TD to Daniels hurt since it was just a two man route and Goldson got fooled. Other than that, I’ll take the TE having Daniels’s numbers if the star WR has only two catches. Without the 8 yard TD drive, the strategy held a talented offense in their building to 17 points. If Clark has 7 catches but Wayne has 2, we’re in better shape than those being reversed.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Oct 26, 2009 9:25 AM PDT up reply actions

3 man route

Goldson pulled up to double the crossing receiver, there was also another receiver on the side away from Daniels that was on a deep comeback. It just shows the limitations in our safetys. ERIC BERRY!!!!

Without the 8 yard TD drive, the strategy held a talented offense in their building to 17 points.

Not to mention that 8 yard drive was MADE by a tackle… of PWilly, by an offensive lineman. And he still almost made the tackle. Would have brought up 3rd and long, a likely FG. Grr….

You have been DFiBrillated.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Oct 26, 2009 6:14 PM PDT up reply actions

So did Spikes get injured a bit?

I missed the beginning and then saw McKillop on a bunch of plays.

But anyway he had a huge preseason and is excellent on special teams. So I think McKillops will pick it up fast at the pro level in regular season games. Against the run for sure but will need safety help on the coverage.

by fortyniners on Oct 26, 2009 2:01 AM PDT up reply actions

In addition to the three you listed

Crabtree, Spencer, Justin Smith and Andy Lee as mentioned above by others are legit positives.

Aubrayo Franklin has a thankless job yet does it well.

From a career perspective, you may want to feature Isaac Bruce’s numbers. He’s a future HOF player and this is his last season.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Oct 25, 2009 11:44 PM PDT reply actions

Definitely Justin Smith and probably Crabtree (not a star at this level yet, but he looks like he’s on his way). Joe Staley is a very solid LT. That’s probably just about it.

A little while ago CB Nate Clements would’ve been on the list, but he’s got people around here kinda pissed this season. Seems like he’s gambling and losing a little to much and/or lost a step.

Idolizing Robb Nen since 2002...

by Smoke on the Water on Oct 25, 2009 11:48 PM PDT reply actions

Except the part

that atleast Clements is still a good and strong tackler when the running backs go his way, hence some of our success against the run this season.

Addai isn’t going to have a good Running game just like all the other RB’s against SF so far (that only means yards but not TD’s and receiving by RB)

by fortyniners on Oct 26, 2009 1:59 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think he's lost a step

He’s always been a high-risk guy, going for the INT (and usually not making it) vs. going for the safe play, mistiming jumps, etc. But he’s a sure tackler, great in run help, and a solid #2 CB (or top rate safety masquerading as a CB, pending on how you look at it). Granted, he’s being paid like a #1, but considering the 49ers aren’t in any cap trouble + might have to overpay to lure FAs, it’s no big deal.

by dgriot on Oct 26, 2009 6:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Smith looked good.
