What to think after 7 weeks..
I know this is one of many of what a lot of these fan posts are about, but I just got done watching the ARIZ - NYG and got to thinking. I'm not going to sit here and find stats to back up what I'm saying, this is an opinion.
The 49ers are 3-3, with identity completely in turmoil. Who is our QB? After watching todays game, it BETTER be Alex Smith. The offense is absolutely TERRIBLE under Shaun Hill, so it was nice to see a change. Why? I have no idea, there is a reason why we hadn't played Smith. So has Smith really got his crap together, and prove to us all the reason as to why we drafted him? I don't know, I'd like to think so. One thing I know for sure, this team is FAR better suited for a QB like Smith as opposed to Hill. With the addition of Crabtree, we have the WR's and TE needed to go downfield a little more, and Hill doesn't give us that option. Also, what goes along with that is a change in the play calling. More pass plays please, for Smith, he showed us he can do it.
Frank Gore... With him coming back, I would assume at 100%, it was certainly a disappointment. I don't know if it's the line or what, but this wasn't the performance I was expecting. I am hoping, though, with Smith, and with the downfield threat that we possibly could have, it will open up some opportunities for him.
Looking at the remaining schedule... I'm concerned. I'm concerned because of the piece of cake schedule the Arizona Cardinals have, compared to the Niners. There have been plenty of posts predicting the outcomes of the games, but in all honesty, that's not accurate. I didn't think Arizona would beat the Giants. But just looking at it, we are at a disadvantage.
In the end, I think it comes down to the play of our QB, Alex Smith. Although Hill has had success starting, he will not get us to the next level. I THINK and I am hoping that the Alex Smith we saw in the Second half, will be the Alex Smith for the rest of the season. If that's the case, I think we will win the division. If not, we will be battling for second place with the Seahawks, and unfortunately, no wildcard.
Sorry for the rambling, I needed to get a few things down while I watch the dang Cardinals take the division lead. Opinions more than welcome.
Go NINERS!!

As far as Smith's play in the 2nd half
I’ve read a lot of people saying that it would have been very different if the Texans had put together a game-plan for Smith and the spread offense during the week. But I don’t think anyone is giving enough credit to the coaching staff for pulling out an offensive formation no one knew we had. Smith played great, but the Texans D was looking around like “What, they’re in an obvious passing formation with more than 3 people out wide? WHAT IS GOING ON? Are we playing the Eagles this week?”
What I didn’t like was having to go to the spread and Smith out of absolute necessity. It would be nice to see the spread incorporated into a normal offensive game-plan, rather than one half of running the ball into a wall of bodies, then going exclusively to the spread because nothing else is working. But I think Smith under center gives Raye the option, and as the season goes on, provided Smith is the starter from here out, I hope Raye becomes comfortable with using it in the normal flow of play-calling.

I'm not sure...
I’ve heard that opinion from some people as well, that Smith might have not performed as well today had Houston been prepared for him. But one thing people with that opinion aren’t taking into account is that Alex Smith and Shaun Hill are going by the same exact playbook. Sometimes it isn’t about playcalling or coaching, but the natural aptitude of the player(s).
Smith sure can make passes that Shaun Hill could not. It will be interesting to see what direction Singletary and the staff would like to go by this coming Sunday.
Also, I don’t know about you, but I thought I saw some chemistry between Alex Smith and all the receivers today. They played as though they were overly familiar with each other, as opposed to Shaun Hill making passes to locations where they aren’t (a very common thing from him thus far).

If Alex Smith can do all the things Shaun Hill was doing right.....and then some
We can consider him an upgrade.
Personally, I see no reason why Alex Smith can’t run the exact same plays Shaun Hill did.
Alex Smith under center shouldn’t automatically mean 3 turnovers a game.

Remaining Schedule
If the Smith of the second half remains our starting QB for the rest of the season, I think we have a shot at beating anybody. We certainly have the weapons for a shootout, we just haven’t had the protection or the QB. We seem to have found those two things today (even with Barry Sims at RT!). I think given the chance our D can effectively frustrate the Indianapolis offense. If we can just score four TDs I think we can win.
I also think we can beat Tennessee, the inconsistent Eagles, and possibly Green Bay and Chicago.

If Smith is the guy we all saw today
We’ll be on easy street and he’ll win comeback player of the year. But, he’s not. He played a great game, but it was a fluky situation and I doubt he can keep it up.
Here are my doubts:
1. Our offensive line still sucks. They will not be able to protect him like they did this afternoon (morning?).
1A. Houston was up big and wasn’t blitzing, this made protection much easier.
2. Houston definitely was not prepared for the spread (nor should they have been). A team that is prepared for the spread will do better against it.
3. Alex Smith has not consistently played like this, he won’t keep it up.
But, at the same time, he did a lot of good things. Here’s why I’m optimistic:
1. The line did protect Smith better for some reason. It’s possible this has to do with the schemes the spread and Smith forced the D into rather than just a temporary slowing of the flood of defensive pressure.
2. Smith was clearly less effected by pressure from the defense.
3. Smith was clearly less effected by pressure from the defense.
4. Smith got the ball to his receivers (6 to VD, 4 to JM, 3 to MC, 2 to IB) instead of just dump offs.
All in all, a great performance from Smith, he made some great throws and he didn’t make too many bad ones. I don’t expect to see Smith like that again, though I do expect him to be deservedly promoted for it. He clearly gives this offense another dimension, and as long as he can take care of the ball, he’s an instant upgrade. If he starts spraying the ball and/or turning it over, we’ve got problems. Hill looked awful in this game, and not much better in the last (at least in the first half, I stopped watching at halftime). I’m also really excited by Crabby’s performance (3 BIG 3rd down catches!). He looks like a stud.

I have hope that maybe he pans out that way we don’t have to waste a draft pick on a qb

2. Smith was clearly less effected by pressure from the defense
This is probably the biggest reasons for hope.
Alex actually had pocket presence and when it looked like he was going to be sacked or if the ball was going to be tipped or something, the ball still came flying out of the crowd.

Naw
This is the biggest reason for hope:
3. Smith was clearly less effected by pressure from the defense.
I don’t know what it was. There were a couple more times this game where Hill hit his 5th step on his 5 step drop and have to immediately sidestep a defender. That, intuitively, should be on the line. But Smith never really looked rushed. So either Houston started backing off or the line started protecting better. If Houston was backing off, why? Were they doing it because of the score? That shouldn’t have been the case, especially once we made a game of it. So it was either the personnel difference or that Houston was more worried about Smith beating them on a blitz. I’ve got another idea, but I’m going to put it in its own fanpost.

Alex sidestepped some pressure
And avoided two plays that would’ve been a sack for Hill, throwing one away and running for yardage on the second. I also think we just have to account for the fact that guys play better and with more confidence when the QB is making plays. It’s aslo pretty easy for a defense to look fresh and strong when they’re only on the field for three plays at a time. Once we started having drives, those D-lineman get a bit tired and everyone is back on their heals. Success breads success.

Long season
Micro view, we’ve lost two in a row and the division lead. Panic sets in as we fans feel a repeat of disappointment from the past six seasons. Macro view says we’re 3-3, better at this point than any season since 2002. We’re 3-0 in the division and winning the West was always going to come down to beating AZ here in December. So we need be no worse than one game back of them going into that game.
Tonight AZ won a road game that most people had as a loss. We’ll need to do the same to a road team on our schedule, whether that be Sunday in Indy or later in Philly. Our identity is still the same; defense, limiting mistakes while being effective at running the ball on offense and (gulp) special teams. That we now can make our own plays at the QB position adds to this and will assist the success of all those goals.
I think many fans have gone so long without being in a legit division race we’ve forgotten how back and forth it can be. Leading now is nice. Leading in December is what matters. I still like our chances, even more so with Smith throwing as he did today.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.

Don't despair...
We may be 3-3 and are now second place in the NFC West, but I feel we are definitely on the verge of something very special; something that could very well explode out of nowhere beginning this Sunday. If a team like the New York Giants, previously argued “the best team in the NFL”, can suddenly drop from an undefeated streak to a 5-2 tally, there is no reason a team that is 3-3 could suddenly explode to finish the regular season at 13-3.
I’m sure my optimism may seem misplaced, but I like to keep my faith in the team. Again, don’t despair, because it looks like we’re on the verge of something very special.

I like your optimism
And if Smith starts and continues to play well and show that he has developed and matured, much like Vernon Davis, we’ll be fine. As you said, the NYG got drilled last week then lost again at home. Philly lost in Oakland. Chicago got dominated in Cincy. And I don’t think Indy will go 16-0. So let’s go in there, win the turnover battle (or at least be even) and pull out a close high-scoring win.

who knows what to think
i think i’m not a believer in alex smith yet, but this is the 1st time i’ve ever wanted him as our qb. i don’t believe he will have this type of performance against indy, though. now i’m nervous about the cardinals again. today’s cards are not the same team we beat earlier in the yr. that team that played last night would’ve killed us. our offensive line problems still haven’t been addressed and what about the non-existent running game? i still think the yorks are 1 step above al davis. our owners suck. we have no running game and we let sheets go. now we have fools muffing punts because we let rossum go! stupid!! when we were 3-0 i thought we might make the playoffs. now, i don’t.
