I'd resign vernon right now based on what he has been and come out on top!!

He will be the number 2 TE of the whole league, maybe number 1

This just after analyzing what Jimmy Raye likes to do.  Our best match up week in and week out is always Davis.  He's too big for D-Backs, too fast for LB's and just a beast in the training room.  He appears to have it all coming together and with Smith in, who's to say how great he can be.  If only the FO seen this comment and resigned him before the season, and had us come out on top.

Star-divide

So the question at hand has to be, who are your pro-bowl TE's in the NFC thus far?  I know who the #1 is, IMO.  Someone find Fearless Frog and let him compare that guy in Seattle to the Duke from the 49ers.

This for my main man Shleko:

In what way?

And based off of what?

My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.

by shlecko on Jun 27, 2009 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Should have been more specific

Yards, Td’s, yac yards. Pro Bowl year for him and big year for the Niners. Gonzalez matured into one of the best tight ends in the league under Raye. Vernon’s tackle-breaking ability and speed that are, IMO, better than Gonzalez ‘at any point in his career is where the confidence coes from. He doesn’t have the hands, but Davis is explosive. This is the first year we won’t be disappointed after having strong expectations for him. Teams know he is there and they won’t see him coming and we have the Rams twice. Vernon’s “BREAKOUT YEAR” is upon us!!

Wow, really?

You think Davis will lead all Tight Ends in the league in rec yards, TD’s and YAC?

Hmm. Okay >_>

My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.

Aside from the probowl what do you think is going on with Vernon? Is this Raye's system?  A lucky game?

Or another player over achieving in a contract season, please weigh your thoughts and keep it clean!

Correction

Just a heads-up that Vernon Davis is signed through 2010. Rotoworld has it here, and the NFLPA website also has it (and they’re significantly more official than Rotoworld.

Production

I honestly believe that Hill wouldn’t have even considered making those three throws Smith made to Davis for the TDs. I think Davis’ results from yesterdays game was the result of having a QB willing to throw into a tighter spot down the field, which is where Vernon should be more.

by sfgfan on Oct 26, 2009 4:12 PM PDT reply actions

Those same throws from Hill would have taken 3 more seconds each..

I actually like Hill but he has not had many good passes this year.

Smith also looked like he has touch on some of his passes.

He is the best in the NFL

His stats show it. I hope those who said he was a bust are eating their words.

I'm so glad I had him on my fantasy team this week.

His age definitely gives him an advantage over Gonzalez and his speed over Witten. He’s stopped whining and stopped pounding his chest (to a certain degree) and he’s realized football’s a team game (I know, it’s kinda sad if you realize that after entering the NFL, let alone your 3rd season). Nonetheless, he will mature and gain experience. The fact that Singletary made him a captain proves that he either has trust in Davis or is hoping that Davis will turn out to be something special (gut feeling). Hopefully Davis can deliver on a consistent basis.

I started him all last year too and he was decent then aswell

But this year is just the best. He is the best TE in the league. I went to Chris Cooleys blog and told him “How ya like VD now sucka? He’s making big money making big plays.”lol

Its not about being classy or not

Its about proving that people like Cooley need to stop acting like A-Holes. VD is proving hes the man and Cooley needs to be reminded of that. Not to mention the 9ers fans who said he was a bust. He was just underutilized.

Maybe in a few years

We’ll see some “Davis to Davis…touchdown!” calls. Then again, Smith might just be gearing up for a long, successful career. Especially if he gets some O-line and D support next year.

Alaska is a state, dammit! Can I get a Niner game on TV up here?

It's the nature of the casual fan to wants easy-to-understand statistics ...

… like receptions, yards, and (most annoyingly) TDs.

And to put too much stock in them, ignoring the context in which those yards were created. I’ve been arguing on this board since i got here that people were writing off Vernon’s pass catching ability at their peril, because they couldn’t understand the context in which he put up his numbers.

Now, of course, people who were calling him a bust will start saying he’s an all pro. He’s the same guy, doing just as well as he’s done the last two years. The difference compared to last year is that the team has decided to start throwing. The difference compared to two years ago is that the team has QBs who can hit the broad side of a barn.

by Ronaldinho on Oct 26, 2009 9:29 PM PDT reply actions

whoops didnt finish

that guy definitely hasn’t come up with touchdowns in our two closest loses. and he definitely is a terrible blocker. its not like he was the pro bowl alternate last year or anything

by rcleverly on Oct 26, 2009 10:43 PM PDT up reply actions

TDs are a function of a well-working passing offense

But they’re a really unimportant stat.

Blaming VD for not catching more TDs when Shaun Hill was the guy throwing the ball is as dumb as blaming him for not catching TDs when he was kept in to block last year.

When a TE is leading your team in catches and yards, he’s not the problem with your passing offense.

by Ronaldinho on Oct 27, 2009 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm staying so out of this

Sooner or later someone is going to do a post like this on me.

My only comment is I’ve been loyal to VD on my fantasy teams for years. This year he just wasn’t in the right slot for me to draft him and now he’s going gangbusters with the TD production.

by bignerd on Oct 26, 2009 10:27 PM PDT reply actions

vernon davis

is only good because is only good because of the genius interworkings of the Jimmy Raye offense. total system player

/sarcasm

so nice to see this guy showing the league what a baller he is.

pro bowl fo sho? I think…yes

Sarcasm?

Raye usually has productive TE’s. Tony Gonzalez best season was with Raye as coordinator!
