It's time for some honesty
Most niners fans are spending this Monday thinking up ways to chalk up Sunday as a "moral victory" and "a good effort." These exercises are, in the end, useless because the 49ers once again are without a quarterback who can concomitantly lead an NFL team. Hill looked awful against a cellar dwelling d. I know the Alex Smith bandwagon is overflowing with newcomers, but the fact is the niners have less of a definitive starting quarterback than they did in the preseason.
If we look at the game itself, it becomes obvious that it would be misguided to use the Texan's defense as a measuring stick for the rest of the NFL. The Texan's have the league's number 21 pass defense after last week's game. The niner's next opponent, the Colts, have number 9. Even if Bob Sanders sits, the Colts wont leave VD wide open 20 yards up the middle of the field as the Texans did. Crabtree looked like he knew what to do when he was on the field (and boy does Al Davis look dumb) but I would expect him to receive maybe half the 1 on 1 match ups he got from Dunta Robinson this week. Rest assured the Colts will disect the film on him and won't make the mistake of giving him a 5 yard cushion on all his curl routes.
Everyone is going to pick the niners to lose next week and they probably will. What's further is Smith will probably show everyone he's still Alex Smith and hasn't magically turned in Joe or Steve overnight. If Smith had really looked this much better from the jump, then why did he consistently make more mistakes in preseason and training camp than Hill? I guess this is pessimistic but I'm getting tired of winning in spite of a quarterback. This team will never sniff more than the first round if the 2010 draft does not address the offensive signal caller.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

I think I get it!
Pessimism is honesty and optimism is dishonest. In which case I prefer dishonesty because it is a whole lot more fun.

You don't get it.
It depends on what the facts are. The facts for the 49ers at present probably warrant a certain amount of pessimism. There are also many situations where people run around going, “The sky is falling! The sky is falling!”, when it isn’t. Wisdom is being able to tell the difference. Dishonesty is never preferable. You’ll just end up looking like Saddam’s spokesgeek, Baghdad Bob.

21 is closer to the league average than 9.

What was Houston's defense BEFORE the game?
Comparing Houston’s defense with the 49er game included is poor statistical analysis.
Everyone hates a pink-shirt-wearing communist.
You want to make an assessment based on a half of football?
Frankly I am one of those calling for Smith to be the QB, did I say he’s gonna lead us to the promise land? NO, I can’t say that, all I can say is he needs a shot. We do need a franchise QB and the only two who could possibly be that guy on the roster are Smith and Davis, and no way do I want Davis starting. We can assess this season, but we don’t need a 1st round QB there aren’t any worth drafting.

You don't know that about Smith you haven't seen him since 06-07
And that was with a bad shoulder………you do know who the niners are right?

rcleverly...
…you should change your name to rdummy. alex smith was handcuffed by his crappy hc, nolan. Without that 200 lb. sack of crap hanging from his shoulder he will be fine. He hasn’t played a single down without being injured in 3 years. You will be eating your words at the end of the season. He may not be Joe, but he will be one of the top 10 qbs in the league. You heard it here first, remember that.
Niner fans are clueless.
They want Crabtree (a rookie) starting right now but they don’t want Davis to even see the field because he’s a rookie. Walsh had Montana on the field during his rookie season at selected times with plays called just for him that Walsh knew would build his confidence for the future. Davis should get the same treatment as he has the ability to be the best Niner QB since Steve Young.

key word Bill Walsh. Mike Singletary is not Bill Walsh.

BTW
Al Daivs looks dumb for paying JeMarcus all that money, jury is out on DHB until he has a half decent QB!

So you'd be opposed to both Clausen and Locker?
And ok with Smith and Hill for another year? no matter what kiper and mcshay shay no one has any idea how good a qb will be in the NFL. all i’m saying is i’m ready for the next guy, whoever that is
Would you change your mind
…if Smith has a 300+ yard, 4 TD game against the Colts and we beat them?
The future ain't what it used to be.
yeah
next you’ll tell me santa claus is real. i think we both know that the o-line is not capable of that.
HE'S NOT!??!?

You don't think the O-Line is capable so why expose a rookie to that?
You can’t judge Smith there is not enough of his career there to judge his entire career!

I guess no one...
unless you count joe flacco, ben rothlesburger, tom brady, carson palmer, kurt warner, drew brees, eli manning and all the other QBs over the years who found sucess their second years as starters. and those are just the guys I can name off the top of my head who still play in the league.
Breakdown
Brees had a QB drafted while he was playing because he wasn’t fitting the bill in SD and it was after his 2nd year Not to mention his 3rd year was his worst……Roethlisberger owes all of his success to D and a running game plus an all pro OL and a team that was stacked for success when he arrived….Brady took over a playoff team with Parcells and Belicheks influence. Flacco had as good of a season last year as the one you’re describing you don’t like of Smith’s……Carson was almost called a bust before he turned it around as well….Warner was almost 30 before his first good season, which was due to injury or it may have never happened. on top of that he left the Giants then they went on to win a superbowl….Eli isn’t fairing too well this year and he wasn’t successful in his 2nd season or 3rd…….All of these QB’s you named all fell into better situations than Smith, they all had better Offenses to work with and some had better overall teams. A few of them joined playoff teams(brady, roethlisberger, and flacco) And to add to that majority of these guys sat either half of a season or a whole season. So find a successful QB two years removed from a horrible team….You’re reaching with all those players and none of them had a situation anywhere near Smith, plus they had the same OC!

heres the top ten QBS
included are:
1. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints (this one wont count, you were right)
3. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers
5. Eli Manning, New York Giants
9. joe flacco (in his second year) he also won more games than alex. i know he’s defense is good but theres a lot to be said if the rookie qb doesn’t lose you the game (ex mark sanchez vs the bills)
matt ryan has been on and off this list all year and he is also in his second year.
joe flacco was also in there until a week ago.
kurt warner won two league MVPs. no matter where he is now he was once legit.
palmer led his team to 8-8 his first year as a starter and 11-5 his second as a starter. statistics aside (which are all better than smith’s) he was more sucessful at winning games, which is ultimately more important.
farve also looked good in his second year in the league. qb rating of 85.3 and more TDs than picks. those are solid numbers, albiet not spectacular numbers. I know where you’re coming from bro, I really do. Most qbs need a learning curve. i just think that by no fault of his own Alex Smith’s career was destined to fail because of how poorly he was managed for the first four years. he had the tools most guys have, he just got fucked by the nfl’s worst o-line that doesn’t play in oakland and coaching changes. we’re all niners fans we should all get along. i’m just depressed and i miss golden joe and flash 80.
Matyt Ryan is a pretty good second year guy...just sayin.

Clasusen isn’t coming out and I don’t think we’ll have a chance at locker and bradford well is injury prone. Give Alex Smith his second shot its his time to shine lets see what he can do

Clausen sucks!!!
he is dumb as a bag of rocks, and that wont do for a qb in the nfl
The sooner St Peter 'drafts' that old coot
…the better the NFL will be. The guy makes me puke.

He should be forced to sell
Too bad they don’t have hostile takeovers in the NFL. There ought to be some sort of no-confidence vote for owners.
The NFL can force a family out for owning race tracks (the Rooneys) because it might tarnish it’s bright image, but a horrible owner like Al Davis gets to keep hanging on.
Maybe he sucks the lifeblood out of his high draft choices which is why he’s still alive?
If we can't get a first down...
It’s because we suck. If Alex Smith throws 3 TDs in one half, it’s because they suck. Can’t win with you. Actually, I won’t see the game this Sunday, you have already explained every detail of it, I guess it doesn’t make sense to watch it now – No hope for us, right?
