Hows that crow tasting, Ray Ratto?

Good gracious remember this article?

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/10/04/SPJB1A1285.DTL

God and they wonder why the Chronicle is going down the tubes. That has got to be the least informed piece of " sports journalism" since the last Rick Reilly gee-aren't-pro-sports-silly piece.

Star-divide

This to me, this season speaks to a total failure on the part of the San Francisco media. No, the local writers are not responsible for Chilo forgetting how to block or Mark Roman blowing coverage, but the 9ers playoff hype machine has been going full blast since training camp, despite VERY few changes to the starting lineup compared to last year. As soon as the team had a decent start against bad teams, the hyperboles started. The media starting selling the niners as a "Raven's like defense." To me the only guys the niners have that would sniff the field on the ravens D are Willis and Clements.

Sure, the defense has showed growth and the play of a couple players has really blossomed this year, but if I see another "Aubrayo Franklin is a great/the top DT in football" article I'm going to puke. I'm going to get killed for that on this site, but I'm so sick of this guy being called "great". He does a solid job with most run plays, but if you look at an NFL scouting report he gets a rating around 68/100 (Source Scouts INC). WHY? because he cannot create any pressure in the pass game and frankly, does not have the physical gifts of the truly elite tackles. Sure, a lot of teams give their DT the assignment of pure run stopping , but the one's considered elite have more than 7 solo tackles through 6 games. I don't care what bill of goods Manusky and J Smith try to sell me on that one. The rest of the NFL's fans and I will agree to disagree.

I know most people think I'm fulla BS at this point and probably stopped reading to comment by now, but I will continue to beat my drum that this is a 8-8 team AT BEST. 7-9 would be a positive step from last year so lets put some things in perspective. It's pathetic that the entire offense is predicated around running when the only guy who can run block worth his salt is Vernon Davis. For all the Joe Staley lovers out there, just watch the recording of the Texans game. The guy gets schooled in pass blocking terribly at least once a series and gets minimal push when they run.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

what’s the difference between the media and you? After a 3-1 start, they were praising the 49ers. Now that they’re 0-2 in their last two games, you’re criticizing the 49ers. I’m sure this will all continue in the ups and downs of the entire season.

Other kids may be sayin' hi-ho, but The Gooch just says yo.

by whobob on Oct 26, 2009 7:20 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

the difference is

that i’m criticizing the COVERAGE of the niners, not the team itself. the team is playing at their ability. I just despise it when writers decide they know more about the sport than anyone else IE the franklin article or the ratto article. the truth is even when the team was 3-1 there’s no such thing as a guaranteed playoff spot. to say so makes our area’s sports media look stupid.

the media anointed them an elite team after 4 games. I’m just saying that was a mistake. No matter how you cut it this team will always give you a ton of effort, but all too often comes up short on talent.

So

you criticize the media’s assessment, and then make one of your own?

I despise when bloggers like yourself think you know more about the game than you do.

Enough with the post your anlysis on other posts shows that your credibility as whatever you are, pertaining to the niners, is way off base. Saying Jusin Smith isn’t any good shows that you know nothing. Spikes is also a serviceable ILB, and Spencer has done nothing to call him great or horrible. Your assessment is simply an age old comparison to the teams of the old and pessimism that seems pretty ridiculous. this is the same guy that called Flacco’s 16 and 16 season better than Smith when he did it with far less talent. The same guy that sauys off the top of his head roethlisberger was great in his first two seasons. Then Brees, who had a worse 3rd year than smith’s 2nd with far more talent. Being upset with sport writers for trying to have a big story and make the big predicition is wierd especially when they do it all the time and is their job. The niners have enough season left to win and make the playoffs, if you want to jump off the ship abandon it completely, fans like you disgust me, to the fullest. If you don’t believe pick the Colts as your team or go with the Vikes, but move around the Niners, we still have a shot at the playoffs this is the NFL rookie!

wow great guy

i was refering to j smith’s QUOTE ON franklin. smith has been a standout all year. I described the team as average. 8-8 would make an average football team. i just have a bone to pick with the people who said essentially the same roster as last year would be 6 wins better this year. the offense has struggled against every quality opponent.

oh and i said flacco is having a good second season. and brees put up much better numbers than alex smith.

i made no mention of spikes and spencer. both have been fine.

The media starting selling the niners as a “Raven’s like defense.” To me the only guys the niners have that would sniff the field on the ravens D are Willis and Clements.

That’s BS

essentially the same roster as last year would be 6 wins better this year..

Someone predicted 13 wins…and you’re happy to see them eat Crow? Do you know how bad of a fan you sound like?

In response to the pther post I asked how many QB’s in their 2nd season is at th etop of the league in QB play…NONE and you responded with inaccurate answers, as usual!

i didnt get the

Memo that said being critical makes me a bad fan. Add smoth to those guys that would start on the ravens d. And all the qbs I mentioned did all have successful seasons their second year taking snaps.

Brees 3rd year was worse than Smiths 2nd and he had way more talent.

Roethlisberger wasn’t great his team was, far from anything Smith had. Brady had the best of them all but he was added to a playoff team. Palmer sat out a year and still didn’t do great. If you notice I said a top of the league as in top 10 and most of these guys were no where near, esecially Warner.

I don't think he can tell you how it tasted.

I mean, it’s kind of tough to taste anything when you swallow all your food whole.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

This has got to be the strangest fanpost ever

Why are you gloating over that he was wrong for saying that we had playoff spot locked up? The hype can be misguided (esp agreed on Staley, totally laughable that people think he’s anywhere near Pro Bowl caliber) but I can’t understand how you can even begin to take joy in our team failing to live up to the hype. I mean, huh? What? Not to mention the article is 3 weeks old…did you bookmark it just for a moment like this? Are you even a fan? Ugh.

to me

This level of play is sad. I’ve watched my favorite team fall from the class of the nfl to the doghouse. I just want this team to finally do the things it takes to be winners again. I’m ashamed that I bought the hype too and after these efforts against benchmark teams I’m not as happy as I was preseason. I just want to raise standards.

You're 'ashamed'?

Lighten up already. Good grief.

Did you actually read this article?

He’s talking about the Niners making the playoffs at 7-9. You, on the other hand, are talking like he called us a 10-6 or 11-5 team.

He’s not wrong about the Niners. He was wrong about the Cards. 7-9 doesn’t get anyone into the playoffs in the West this year.

Maybe before you tell anybody to eat crow about playoff predictions you should wait until you see who actually makes the playoffs? We’re not out of it yet.

He said 6 more wins than last year

That’s 13-3

The big problem with bay area football has always been the media

Ray Ratto is a moron. Most of the bay area writers are morons. Who cares. When it comes down to it, what we as fans think matters the most. The media may help with facts but who cares about their oppinion!?

the way the media

should be used is a tool for teams to give out information to fans, Vegas and their opponents. it also gives players and coaches a forum to explain their decision making. it shouldn’t be used like this. guess i’m an idealist. or douche….w/e

i really don't understand the point of this post

don’t remember any fanposts or fanshots from the author three weeks ago…saying HOLD the HYPE you guys are all wrong, this team will struggle…
kind of seems like Hindsight argument, kind of looks like cheap “told you so type of agrument” which is quite hilarious since once again never remember this guy saying anything before..IF you are a fan, don’t let your panties get tied in a knot because they’re struggling…BE a real fan, and stick with em’——- otherwise stay quiet.
