2010 PRO BOWL VOTING 49ERS
Pro Bowl Ballot (click here)
Before someone tells me that this should be a FanShot, I just wanted to clarify that this could very well create some good discussion. Yes, you can comment in a FanShot but its likely that it wont see nearly as much traffic. And this matter needs all the traffic it can get. Therefore, I'd like to keep it a FanPost.
With that out of the way, I am curious to see who everyone would like to see represent the Niners in the all-star game. We're only 6 games in to the year and there's alot of football left in the season. It's very premature but the more votes, the better chance our guys will have to get in. He are the candidates that they have listed for us (don't kill the messenger please).
Offense: Shaun Hill (I think it's safe to assume most will not vote for him and Alex Smith isn't on there yet), Frank Gore, Isaac Bruce, Josh Morgan, Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis, Eric Heitmann, Joe Staley, Tony Pashos, Adam Snyder (as Guard), Moran Norris
Defense: Michael Lewis, Nate Clements, Shawntae Spencer, Isaac Sopoaga, Justin Smith, Dashon Goldson, Patrick Willis, Takeo Spikes, Manny Lawson, Parys Haralson
Special Teams: Arnaz Battle, Michael Robinson, Andy Lee, or Joe Nedney
I think it's safe to say that if Vernon Davis stays on pace and Willis as well, those two should be shoe-ins without our help (but still vote). Besides those two, it's not as clear as to who else could possibly go with exception of Gore. Gore has alot of work to do to get back on pace for a Pro Bowl selection this year.
Like I said, it's a little premature, so if you want to "Rec" this post to keep it up for a while to give everyone a chance to vote for our favorite 49ers, I am sure all of the players would appreciate all the votes they can get. So go vote, vote, vote!!!
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

I think Davis is a lock
Gore’s not having a Pro Bowl season this year. Willis is a lock. I think Clements makes it (name recognition is a powerful thing).
by smileyman on Oct 26, 2009 11:28 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Willis and Davis are probably locks
but gore will have to own to catch up statistically but i have no doubt he can do it.
i think that the announcers giving heitmann deserved pats on the back during the recent fox broadcasts might help get his name out there.
wanna hear a funny joke? the Buccaneers picked Gaines Adams over Patrick Willis
by rcleverly on Oct 26, 2009 11:33 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Gore
could make it on name recognition also. he need about 750 or so to break 1000 yards rushing. If he stays healthy, it’s quite possible. TD’s will factor in also. If the Niners use him alot in the redzone that could very well pay off. Key for him is he has to stay healthy and get about 75 yards a game
by Drew K on Oct 26, 2009 11:38 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't know if Gore will be able to do that
Gore has only had one game this year where he’s rushed for 75 or more yards (that was the Seattle game).
22 rushes for 30 yards at AZ
16 carries for 207 at Seattle
13 carries for 32 at Houston
Not good numbers at all. If we open up the passing game some that should give him a better chance to do it but it’s looking kind of bleak for him right now.
by smileyman on Oct 26, 2009 11:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well looking at those numbers
it’s an average of 89.7 yards a game for those 3 games so its possible. Only if he stays healthy of course. 10 games left; with 14 yards a game less, it gets him over 1000. If you’re talking average he could get 140 yards in one game and in a second get 10 yards and thats an average of 75 in those two games, so it could work out like that.
Like you said though, pass needs to open that up for him.

Gore is 32nd..
in rushing League wide as of today. I’m a 49er fan, but I could not be a football fan voting for Gore if I had to vote today.
That’s why the Pro-Bowl is bogus.
Well, we're waiting....

After the Seahawk game he was ranked pretty high. If he can put together a solid month he might get back in the race based on reputation and general Pro Bowl voting ignorance. Outside Peterson no other back is really putting together a great season in the NFC. If I am missing someone than let me know.

Check that..
“nother page has him at 14.
But I still cant vote for Gore, not with Jackson on a bad team, Peterson, Barber, and Turner.
Well, we're waiting....
by drummer on Oct 27, 2009 12:29 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Barber???
he hasn’t done that much better than Gore and for you to even mention a Cowboy…. Wow, unbelievable.
Btw, Gore has more yards a carry (5.3) than Barber (4.8), Turner (3.4), Peterson (5.0) and Jackson (4.4). He only trails Barber by 100 total yards so for you to say that about Gore in comparison to Barber is sac-religous.

z0Mg!!
I mentionedz a C0wb0Yz!!!
Go look up 1997. Nap Kaufman.
Go look up 1997. Mike Alstott.
Do it.
Well, we're waiting....
by drummer on Oct 27, 2009 1:01 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why not? ..
Kaufman in 7 game rushed for over 100 yards in 3 games prior to burning DEN for a then record 227. He wound up with over 1200 yards.
Alstott, a FB in RB clothing, rushed for 665 that same year because he was a GL back.
Tell me who went to the Pro-Bowl that year?
Well, we're waiting....

I did..
But I’m responding to how you cooked Gore’s numbers for 3 games. But hey, even PFR has him a 63 ypg, but if minus SEA, he rushed for less 80 yds total.
PRO BOWL!!

Guessing Alstott
Probably because he was classified as FB and that was considered a separate position from RB in 1997.
Napolean Kaufman was a RB for the Raiders. Mike Alstott played for the Bucs so I’m not understanding the Cowboys reference.
Kaufman probably didn’t make the squad because the AFC was stacked with good RB’s. Terrel Davis was ripping the league apart, I remember Eddie George was a monster back then, I even think Jerome Bettis was at his hey day with the Steelers. AFC also had Curtis Martin and maybe Fred Taylor was beginning his career, Marshall Faulk was an excellent but shadowed RB for the Colts.
Kaufman to me was one of those players who was effective but delusional Raider fans propped him up too much. Tyrone Wheatley was zOmg for those fans too.

I put this out there...
To show the absurdity of qualification’s regarding Pro Bowl balloting, and the usage if stats (that aren’t DVOA) that are less than the sensational situations that are on the highlight reels that determine who is Pro-Bowl worthy. I mean, DAL recently had a host of Pro-Bowlers who didn’t win a playoff game. Even though we know Alstott was an FB, he still has listed in the record books as an RB, with more PB’s than Thurman Thomas. Alstott is a 3 time All Pro. Thomas only twice. Yet, Alstott has never rushed for over 1000 yds in his career.
The real reason why the NFL is putting out a vote this early is for marketing purposes. You will see a campaign on Sundays that will correlate the voting, much like any All Star game. If you buy into this, fine. Just remember that you have a ballot on the back of your box od Wheaties.

Michael Turner is a good one
A mini slump in the beginning few weeks but easily my #2 choice.
I’m not even sure Barber has competed in two games for the Cowboys . . . the same goes for Felix Jones.
The Saints have three headed running back committee and they haven’t even stayed healthy.
Maybe Ahmad Bradshaw of the Giants is #3 for putting together two good games against bottom dweller competition.
It’s a sad, sad list.
by bignerd on Oct 27, 2009 2:33 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but...
NOV is when RB’s really make a push. Weather is a huge factor here. Playoff position on front runners as well. The positive for the 49ers could be the Gore has the legs for NOV. He really hasn’t done anything outside of SEA. His ankle is still healing. But he hasn’t taken that much of a beating yet, and great RBs own NOV. Gore peaking into the soft latter half of the sched could be fantastic, given that the opposing denfenses won’t stack the box like they did in the early part of the season where the 49ers really stole the opening game. Yet, every other team knows how important the run game is as well, but their respective offenses are more in sync with the passing game and blocking schemes to run the rest of the playbook.
If I had a choice, Stephen Jackson would take my vote over Gore right now. Post NOV? I doubt Gore would survive a whole season in crap STL on the turf like Jackson hasn’t for a full season like Gore had grass for 8 games. Soft grass as well. SJax has to carry more weight than Gore does this season.
Lemme put it this way:
Which RB is being more wasted?
Gore?
SJax?

And he should be voted for on the ballot.

It's funny you said that
because I almost put him instead of Clements. Clements was the bigger name though and this is really Spencer’s first season starting. I may change it later if it’s possible. I only have three options on the poll or I would have added a bunch of guys to the poll. Maybe Fooch or one of the other guys can help with editing the poll…

It's by DB's..
Which includes a whole defensive backfield, including scrubs that aren’t starters who may, just may, be a a SS, FS, or DB, even just being a ST player that is a DB.
Sooooooo….
But hey, go look it up yourself, and tell me how you mix a base of Cherry Kool-Aid and Baking Soda to make a base and smoke it in a glass pipe.

by drummer on Oct 27, 2009 1:50 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't trust any CB stats sites
Someone else has an ongoing fan post where they show ranks of individual players. Whatever website he used for rankings it had Jared Allen as the 47th ranked DE. I’m also pretty sure Clements was ranked #1 for at least one week.
I’m going to trust my eyes over these statistical, individual breakdowns on defensive players.
by bignerd on Oct 27, 2009 2:25 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The NFL stats really show..
You can’t really qualify DBs measuring on stats alone. Really, the only thing we know about a lock down CB is when the ball is not thrown on their side of the field. Yet, Clements is getting more work on his side of the field. Is that due to Spencer? Well, I would think that if I could beat the 49ers best CB, I can beat the lesser CB. If I had my best WR on Clements, I think I could beat that.
Clements has been burned a lot these past 2 seasons. But, if he is still your best CB, then how do I vote over better secondaries in the NFC?
Well, we're waiting....
by drummer on Oct 27, 2009 3:08 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I obiously didn't think that
I was merely stating that there are only 2 starting CB’s per team. You were the one that threw Spencer in to the vast crowd of “DB’s”, not me. Comparing a SS or ST or special situations guy to RCB is not comparing apples to apples. Different assignments, duties, abilities, etc.
You rarely make sense and when you don’t you just fly off the wall with some insane cut-down. Is that your capacity? I mean really, its not necessary to insult people if you can’t back up (with stats, links, or whatever else you have other than opinion) what your spouting off.

Everybody vote for Crabtree!!!
Haha, just for the heck of it.
It’s a shame about Shawntae Spencer. He has truly become a lock-down corner. He won’t make the Pro Bowl though because his name will never show up in stats. Opposing teams almost never throw towards him so he won’t get stats on interceptions, tds, passes defensed, tackles, etc. He is having a heck of a year though.
As for who I think will make it:
Vernon Davis, Patrick Willis.
Should make it but won’t because of similar reasons as I listed for Spencer:
Justin Smith, Aubrauyo Franklin, Ray McDonald, Shawntae Spencer, Andy Lee, (Eric Heitmann?).
by Riding The F Train on Oct 27, 2009 3:06 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
crazy thought here, but
should we maybe vote against our players so they dont get injured in a meaningless game?
i think we should each put in 100 votes for Jon Beason.
I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.
by these3words on Oct 27, 2009 9:26 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
With new voting
I would change my Heitmann vote to Spencer. Other than the catch by Johnson on Sunday (what a throw BTW as teh coverage was perfect) I can not recall a catch of significance he has given up. And he’s doing this with average safety help and average at best pass-rush. Those factors have to be included when judging a CB.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.

I just saw
after the Texans game and his 3 TD’s, Vernon Davis is all alone at the top of the receiving touchdown list for the season with 6. He leads the entire NFL. If he continues the pace, he should be a shoe-in for the Pro Bowl.
by mountaindew77 on Oct 27, 2009 6:24 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Michael Robinson
should make it on special teams. He has been a great tackler and is always in on the coverage. When he was the upback, he was a devastating blocker. Last season Rossum’s kickoff return for a TD occurred only because MRob threw two great blocks. Now that they have him returning kickoffs, he is averaging 26.4 yards per return. In his best career season, Rossum averaged 26.8. Unlike Spurlock and Delanie, you can depend upon Michael to hold on to the ball.
