49ers Make Roster Changes; Pashos to IR
The San Francisco 49ers today announced that they have placed T Tony Pashos on the Injured Reserve List. Pashos suffered a fractured scapula in Sunday’s game at Houston. Pashos was signed by the 49ers on September 7, 2009, and went on to appear in five games, starting for the first time this past week at Houston.
They have since signed T Chris Patrick from the Chiefs practice squad to fill his roster spot. As for who will get the start at RT, nothing has been stated as of yet.
The team has also announced that they have released LB Marques Harris and promoted LB Diyral Briggs to the active roster from the practice squad. Briggs spent the first six games of the regular season on the 49ers practice squad, after being signed as an undrafted free agent by San Francisco in 2009 out of Bowling Green.
Harris was signed by the 49ers on April 30, 2009, and appeared in four games this season

Boone at RG
Does anyone know if its even possible for this guy to go?

Boone seems like he'd be a good RG
in the same regard that Rachal seems like he’d be a good RG. Big and dominating, but it didn’t work out for one so I’m hesitant about the other.

Rachal's feet are slow?
what is that from?
by goatfather on Oct 27, 2009 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not exactly...
… sure if you asking because you don’t think they’re slow or if you feel like foosball is putting words in your mouth, but I’m going to answer as if you don’t think they’re slow.
Generally, the biggest reasons for failure in pass protection is the lack of proper footwork. Maybe Rachal’s feet aren’t slow, per se, but his lack of experience in footwork makes them slow.
by sfgfan on Oct 27, 2009 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
wierd
he has slow feet, but yet was proclaimed as the best pulling guard on the team?
by goatfather on Oct 28, 2009 8:14 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Again.
He’s not slow because he’s slow downhill. His feet are slow in the agility sense, being able to get into proper position to pass pro. Example of this is when you compare LTs to RTs. Most LTs tend to have better/quicker footwork.
Also, being the best pulling guard on the 49ers isn’t necessarily saying a whole lot.

What was all that about last week then?
Good that we got an OT though, and pleased for Briggs.

I'm intrigued
He might be a pure pass rush specialist. I know he’s skinny, but if he can slip by the OT to get to the QB on obvious pass rushing downs than it’s an improvement.

Come in fresh on some 3rd downs against Tackles who don’t get to see much of him and his speed/moves. Let’s see if he has developed.

This Chris Patrick guy
was obtained from the Cheifs practice squad. We’re seriously that deperate? Plus the guy is only 280 and really tall 6’4 at the tackle position?. People are going to get major leverage on this guy.
Where is Boone? And why is there never any talks about Wragge? Is he that bad? Or what about Cody Wallace? Are all of these guys fails? Worse than Rachal even?
We need to do really well in free agency next year
by Drew K on Oct 27, 2009 1:36 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Cause those guys don't play Tackle.
And Boone did a very poor job at pass blocking from the Tackle spot against backups in pre-season. Plus, had we promoted him we couldn’t have taken Patrick from the Cheifs PS to replace Boone on our PS.

Guys can be rotated though if there are needs at certain positions
Like C to G is not a huge transition. If you were going G to C thats a different story. But Snyder moved to G. I think shuffles could be made depending on the level of talent. I think the main concern, you sort of touched on it, is that they are all just so young
by Drew K on Oct 27, 2009 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not too much rotation
Since the line depends so much on cohesion, footwork and knowing who to block when teams blitzing. Tackle is a tough and lonely position, lik DB. We can’t afford any (more) mistakes out there.

Yeah
You have to look at the teams that consistently have great O-lines. They all have one thing in common, seasoned vets that can teach the younger guys you do draft. You have to have a foundation before you can build a house. Just look how much better we looked on that side when Pashos finally got the playbook down and in to the grove. There was a difference if you paid close attention. So even a guy who doesn’t necessarily stand out in the NFL can make a difference between having a rookie go start on the O-line in the NFL.
Sucks about Pashos though. I thought he was going to do fine in there

Tough about Pashos
I don’t think he made any errors on Sunday and this allowed Snyder to take some snaps away from Richal. As for Patrick, he is smaller but that goes with the McKitrrick school of lineman for those who’ve been clamoring for a return to that.
Congrats to Briggs! I guess he’s picked up the defense (and special teams responsibilities) while on the PS and the coaches now prefer the young guy with upside over the vet who knew Manusky’s system. Or they got the feeling some other team was going to pluck him from our PS. I certainly hope to see him get some chances to rush the QB.

He’s a ball hawk. I follow the Sooners and he was all over the place all the time. I’ve seen a bit of that now that they moved him back to safety (at least in preseason) before he was injured. I think he had 4 picks? All against other teams 1st stringers too.
In ’07 he got Big 12 defensive player of the year. He made an impact from the time he was a freshman. I remembered thinking back then that he would have a chance to be something in the NFL

Roman is less of a liability at SS. Also Roman is better in Pass protection than Lewis. With indy’s pass heavy offense Roman might be the better option anyway

So has Goldson
I’m with whoever is asking about R Smith, but lay off Roman, he has had a better overall season than Goldson! DB is our biggest defensive need, and not to mention the 49ers were waiting to draft Byrd whom the Bills took ahead of us and that’s why they decided to trade the pick.

by Drew K on Oct 27, 2009 2:22 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
sound defensively
he knows where he is supposed to be, and plays consistently. Unfortunately at FS he was consistently getting beat.
He used to wear the Helmet and in this game it might not be a bad idea. He would be the most experienced center fielder on the defense. He would best make adjustments to Mannings adjustments. We know the D had a lot of communication problems in the last game. Giving the “dot” back to Roman may be their best bet.
by goatfather on Oct 27, 2009 2:31 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I dont know about that
I saw him bite on pumps and make all kinds of mental errors last week. Against Atlanta as well. I think people are forgiving of those things because of one good play he made at the end when he jumped and blocked that pass creating a 4th down. Think about how much Peyton Manning pumps to get DB’s to bite though and go back if you have the means to and look at how much Roman bit on the PA passes and pump fakes by Schaub and then tell me he will be better back there than Lewis. Thats all I ask
by Drew K on Oct 27, 2009 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Haven’t paid too much attention to Goldson but it seems when the defense has been beat deep it’s been the CB releasing the WR to Goldson who bites on some sorta fake or shorter route.

Goldson was way out of position on the Owens TD
For some reason he failed to see Owens coming Uncovered up the middle. Instead, he began sprinting immediately to the right side of the field when he saw that it was a play action pass.
He forgot to check underneath.

The question I have about Goldson
Is will it get better? First year starter so, will we see improvement in the final eight games vs the first eight? Will be get slightly more consistent throughout the year and be better next season when paired with Berry or Mays? Should he be moved to SS next year?
I’m not happy with his consistency but he has been better at FS than Goldson, certainly in coming toward the LOS and tackling people.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
by SpurredOn on Oct 27, 2009 9:58 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wonder as well, but he has been in the system for a couple of years
I understand Sing saying that there is a communication gap on defense, our corners and FS don’t seem to be on the same page. We have a lot of blown coverage instead of bad play calling. It’s something that can be sorted out, and I hope it does. I do think Goldson can be an effective SS, I often think there isn’t enough action for him out there and he loses focus for not being active on every down. SS is more active than FS. I think our coverage holds up until it reaches that 2nd level and it also sucks in man coverage on post routes over the middle. I think there is also a hole in the ILB (spikes) as in he may be the guy you want to have cover TE’s (at least his position). SO Willis can focus on backs and not TE’s. Personally I’d go with Biggs and the other backup OLB and trying Lawson at ILB. He would be better suited for covering big TE’s and could bolster the pass rush blitzing up th emiddle since he has a frame that would aid in batting balls down, that are thrown in the middle of the field. His athletecism IMO would be better served next to willis.

IMO, Roman is not better in coverage. Lewis is not as fast but he puts himself in position and I don’t see him biting on pump fakes nearly as much as Roman.
You’re right though. We need help back there next year.
Wouldn’t mind seeing Berry or Mays at FS with Reggie Smith playing SS. Or if we ended up with Mays cause Berry was gone already, even flip-flop that with Mays SS and Reggie FS

Roman is more mentally...
… sound in pass protection. He just fails when it comes to actual physical talent. Combine Roman and Goldson into one player (in some kind of fusion technique) and the 49ers have one fairly decent safety.

Waiting for someone to bring this up
I was debating on making a fan post over this observation. There is an argument to be made that Mc Boo Foo and the 49ers would have been better off just drafting all the Cal players the last 4/5 years.
We’d have Rogers at QB, Jackson at WR, Alex Mack at G/C and Lynch at RB (ok, not an improvement). Just don’t hope as a unit they don’t play like Cal in a big game.
by bignerd on Oct 27, 2009 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No
We can skip Lynch. As I noted above, he’s a notch below Frank Gore. Also, Gore was just coming off his 1600 yard season so the 49ers were not looking for a RB i the draft. I just included him because he was another top tier Cal pick.

Chris Patrick interview at Nebraska
What position do you expect to play in the NFL?
Chris Patrick: I’ve heard every position on the line except for center. I can play tackle, but I can also play guard so that’s just another valuable asset that I can do. A team can put me wherever they want and I can bring multiple things to the table because of my versatility.
by goatfather on Oct 27, 2009 3:13 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
and
What do you feel is your greatest strength as a football player?
Chris Patrick: I think the most important thing as an offensive lineman is you’ve got to be big and strong obviously, but you have to have very good technique with your hands. The biggest thing in the NFL is that if you can pass block you’re going to play for a long time. I’m solid fundamentally and technique wise and with my hands and feet and playing at Nebraska, I’m very familiar with pass protection.

Ugh. I'm sick of
All these players coming in for their “versatility” especially on the offensive line. I don’t want a guy who can play five positions, I want a guy who doesn’t suck at one of them. I want a guy who is above average at one, not a guy who understands the terminology to line up and play four of them at a low level.

Well our offensive problems aren't entirely the fault
of our line. Rewatching that Houston game there was plenty of blame to go around. Gore didn’t hit several of his holes quick enough so they filled up. There was serious miscommunication with Hill and the offense on the entire first half. Coffee on his runs showed no ability to cut to the open hole.
Lots of blame to go around.

So, will these roster moves help the OL?
They needed to do something but not sure if this is going to help or hurt. If Smith can continue to provide a decent passing attack then the running game should be more effective. Defense fell apart. we are getting some pressure but the secondary is so full of holes it isn’t funny.

i believe there was talk about that in the offseason
is it too late to do this? It seems like something you would need an offseason to get him properly acclimated to the position.
