What Alex Smith Starting Could Mean Both Long And Short Term
Watching the 2nd half of the Texans game had me in an interesting state of mind. First off i was disenchanted by the play of the offense in the first half, obviously not the first time this has happened in the during the 2009 season. But then as Alex Smith threw his 1st, 2nd and 3rd touchdown passes i found myself in another state of mind. Complete and utter shock. Was this the same Alex Smith that thew 1 touchdown compared to 11 interceptions his rookie season? Then i thought to myself, "of course it wasn't" Arnaz Battle is no longer our number one receiver!!! Was this the same Alex Smith that improved to 12 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in his second season? And again i answered "no". The confidence he showed was something i haven't seen from a 49ers QB since Jeff Garcia and a confidence i have not seen since Alex Smith's college career at Utah.
Now what does this mean? Well i will have to see more then a half of this type of play from him in order to make a full judgment. But what i did see was a crisp accurate throw, a presence in the pocket and even more so an ability to run the offense in a way that a QB needs to. By this i mean reading the coverage, stepping away from pressure and either finding an open receiver or running for positive yardage. On many occasions Smith also looked off his 1st or 2nd target to find an open receiver, this will happen much more if the offensive line gives him time to pass. Not only did the offense look completely different with Alex Smith in the game but the other 10 players appeared to rally behind the new signal caller. The offensive line played better, the running game found a little bit of success and most of all the receivers appeared to be in sync with Smith.
Both the short and long term implications of Smith's success are huge for the 49ers franchise.
1. More short term: If Smith is able to manage the offense and open up the passing game then our offense will find success that we have not seen in a couple of seasons and the running game will be able to do what we all thought it could before the regular year began, 8 defenders will not be in the box and a healthy Frank Gore will take advantage. We have a good defense and if our offense can put up three Touchdowns a game the 49ers will be in position to win most of them and we will be contending for the playoffs in December.
2. Long Term: Alex Smith has already been considered a bust by most of the NFL and many of the 49er faithful, including myself. If he can have success this year then that bust label will be removed and we will have the QB we drafted in 2005. This also means that the 49ers will not have to spend a draft pick on a QB in the near future especially with Nate Davis on the roster. Remember Alex Smith is still young and it isn't like the talent he had at Utah completely left him. He has just been able to reacquire confidence and get healthy again.
I understand that all this is because of one half of football in which he really had no pressure on him coming into a game down 21-0 with not much expectations. Houston didn't game plan for him and the 49ers ran an offense they have never ran. But as the season continues and if Smith shows some of what he did in the 2nd half against the Texans then we will see with our own eyes the actual QB of the future starting. A lot remains to be seen but as Steve Young said on KNBR today " If my optimism is blind please don't give me glasses, i don't need 20/20 vision at this time"

In just one half of play, Smith was 15-of-22 for 206 yards, three touchdowns and a desperation pick at the end of the game. It’s hard to believe he can keep this up, and in the future, he’ll need to avoid fumbling a lot (he has tiny hands), but if Smith can continue playing like this, the 49ers will be a Super Bowl contender.<blockquote

Thank You
I have not been an Alex Smith supporter. I even went as far as to call him a “bust” in the off-season and even mentioned releasing him following this season in a separate thread just weeks ago.
But i am all about the success of the 49ers franchise and if Alex Smith continues what he started in the 2nd half against Houston then of course the success of this team will be fast tracked.

Soooo..
You gonna compare him now to his rookie season, when he was, well, a rookie in his first year in a horrible team.
How about this? The entire team, including the HC, is different than the 2005 season as well? Maybe then you wouldn’t need to put Smith’s td-int ratio because it really has no context into ONE HALF OF FOOTBALL.
I don’t know why I ask sometimes.

BTW, the real point is that if you’re gonna measure Smith by a season, then the proper season would have been his second as a starter. Putting in the “1td – 11ints” is more nocal stat-ness that doesn’t have any context.

I’ve been saying this to people all week. I’m not ready to go see if Goodwill still has that #11 jersey somewhere. Let’s see how he performs this Sunday in the face of the pressure that we all know Indy is gonna bring. If he’s the Smith of old, he’ll crumble. If not…?
You know, sometimes it just clicks for a QB. I remember one busted QB out of Tampa. Middle 80s, I think. Got traded out west, sat a couple seasons behind a legend, and turned out pretty decent when he got his start.
Here’s hoping.

that he showed the most confidence since Garcia is not correct, IMO. I saw at least as much confidence emanating from Nate Davis during the preseason and Alex is going to have his hands full next season keeping Nate from starting.

I’d be confident playing against 2nd and 3rd stringers as well. Shaun Hill played with confidence and so did JTO, yes JTO, he was confident that he would screw up eventually. The Nate Davis Bandwagon is the most annoying vehicle since the suped up Cavalier. C’mon with this Nate Davis stuff.

Nate may be good he may be horrible. Playing against 3rd stringers in practice won’t tell you anything except that he’s good enough to beat guys that will never make an NFL team. One things for sure. LOL! It’s funny how far half a football game will take a player around here. 82% think he is the QB of the future when just about everybody thought he was a bust a week ago. I mean I hope Alex Smith succeeds and we don’t need to use a draft pick on a QB, but I am quite skeptical that he is suddenly a different QB than we have seen in the past.
by SuperStarAR on Oct 29, 2009 10:17 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Although I am skeptical
and am taking a let’s wait and see approach, I don’t think saying “that he is suddenly a different QB than we have seen in the past” is a valid statement, and I’ve seen it, or something similar thrown around a lot. It’s not suddenly different, we haven’t seen the guy play a real game in around 2 years before last weekend. Maybe he finally had the time to take his experiences for the first 3 years, both good and bad (mostly bad) and evaluate them from a different stand point. Having seen the pro game more, having studied more film and observed other QBs, maybe has helped him develop the mental aspect of the game that he was missing.
I was always under the impression that when drafted, the perception on Smith and Rodgers was that Rodgers was more pro ready then, but Smith had the higher ceiling. Maybe my memory is off. Now this doesn’t mean I’m expecting a 180 from Smith, and think we’ll see 400+ yards and 6TDs every game from him. But maybe, just maybe, the time off has been good for him and he’s actually an improved QB. But again, I’m not ready to jump on the bandwagon just yet. I’ll let things play out a little first.
by Sebaz49 on Oct 29, 2009 10:30 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The question in the poll was, “COULD Alex Smith Actually be the 49ers QB of the future?” To which 83% say yes it’s possible that he COULD be. If the question was, “WILL Alex Smith be the 49ers QB of the future?” the results would probably be a lot different.

I’m glad, health permitting, we’ll get to find out. One less unknown in the offseason. And we’ll find out with more than just one half or a couple of games. health--a significant difference for Smith this year
I agree that it’s nice that we’ll get to see Smith play this year. If he doesn’t pan out and we have to cut bait and draft a 1st-round QB, that’s of course disappointing, but not the end of the world. While I understand why there are so many “Smith’s-a-bust”-ers, we really only have about a season and a half to go on because he was playing with a broken shoulder in year three. Hill is a quality back-up, and Davis is a guy whose potential I’m excited about—but at this point, I hope Smith makes like year 2 when he took every snap for the Niners.

I agree..
Hey, at least we get to see what we have here. Worst case, he fails, we know neither him or Hill are the future and we know it with certainty and we keep drafting QBs until we find one. The problem is we spent a lot of money on a guy whom got hurt so we havn’t properly been able to evaluate him. Which I feel has kept us off the table when it came to using a high draft pick on another QB. At least this year, we get to see what we have, good or bad. Well said Spurred. I’m just glad we get to see once and for all, what we actually have.

I think it's funny too!
I have voiced on here plenty of times how I just thought Hill had looked pretty terrible all year, except for maybe two drives. I said during pre-season that I hoped Smith would win the starting role and was not happy or hopeful when the Hill was named the Starting QB, I still thought the 49ers would win their division and even go 11-5, but never because of Hill, just because of our defense and a running game.
When I was saying all that I was getting blasted by the masses here at NinersNation.. Especially on the one where I wanted Smith as starting QB over Hill. I pointed out stats, where the only two teams Hill had beat that was over 500 was a Tampa Bay game where they had already made the playoffs and sat most their starters the 2nd half, and a Jets team where we now know Farve was hurt and was not his normal game changing self.
Now there are all theses Smith supporters come out of the wood work, where were you during the pre-season?
I remember a few of us Smith supporters getting blasted about how we weren’t supporting the team and everything we said was only negative.. blah..blah..blah… It’s nice to know that there are now a lot of folks seeing, or admitting what the few of us had said from the start of preseason.
HILL SUCKS.. Period!!! Anyways enough ranting for now!

Hill Doesn't Suck
he just has physical limitations that most NFL QB’s and Alex Smith don’t have. I appreciate everything Shaun Hill has done for this team, he has been the true professional and a winner. But it is clear where the talent is at the QB position for the 49ers. And if Smith can continue it will only benefit the 49ers organization.
And in the end aren’t we all about winning as 49ers fans?

Hill doesn’t suck, he just has physical limitations tham most NFL QB’s and Alex Smith don’t have.
So what you’re saying is that Hill doesn’t have the talent of an average NFL QB. So why was he our starting QB? Where is everyone who talked about what a great game manager he was? If Smith has a bad game, es everyone going to jump back on the Hill bandwagon?

You are right!
Fair-honest-constructive criticism is certainly a very good thing, and that’s what I have seen from most of the younger 49er fans, but I have also noticed that the younger guys seem to have less patience, get frustrated a little more quickly, and express themselves more aggressively. None of that is necessarily bad, but can lead to very "hard" comments. Regardless, I personally enjoy reading all of the comments. I was not trying to be argumentative, just wanting the younger guys to cut us older ones a little slack if we see things a little differently form what you do.

LOL
Cornelius, I’m 28 but what you wrote cracked even me up. Of course we have less patience and get frustrated easily. We have grown up in a world where everything is at our fingertips. If I look something up, and can’t find it within 5 minutes, I close the window and do something else. We have grown up in a world where every 5 minutes, our show is stopped, so we can watch something that only lasts 30 seconds for another 5 minutes. My whole life has been built around increments of 5-10 minutes. It’s what’s wrong in this world. Now the question remains….whose fault is that? Mine the kid that was just doing what he could to grow up, or the older generation (yours) that allowed it to happen and pushed it?
LOL. Just food for thought. I totally agree with you though, just helping to make your point by being a little more aggressive at the end. LOL ;-) Keep posting my friend.

I'm Sorry you think it is Classless!
What I think is Classless is people so quickly jumping on and off bandwagons as if certain players are the savior for our teams future! For crying out loud, people are jumping off of Hill’s Jock just as quickly as they were jumping on it in pre-season! Now if you have a problem with the word Sucks or Jock for that matter! I’m Sorry; I’m just calling like I see it!
Ok, I’ll say it in terms that you might find more dignified just to please you. Bottom line, I never thought Smith was a good QB! As a matter a fact, I always viewed him as a pretty lousy QB., There, is that better because you know deep down I do care what you think. Um, Not really! Get over it, I hardly care what your opinion is of someone who uses the word Sucks!
As a matter of fact, I think it’s pretty classless you feel the need to verbally attack someone by calling them classless because of something as petty as the word Sucks! So if I would have to guess what type of person you see yourself as it would be, a prim and proper, snob nosed debutant that is offended by the word "sucks" because in their mind that should only be said in the bedroom.
And just so you know, I turn 40 next week, I am not some little kid, Oh and I do speak my mind because I can. I have spent over 20+ years now in the military, and know exactly why I get to say what I want to say! Yes its old classless military statement, Freedoms aren’t free! They are paid for by someone’s spilt blood, and still paid by those willing to risk their own blood to keep those freedoms. So I will use the word "Sucks" whenever and however I want. I find it obviously less offensive than you, and additionally I think it is quite accurate in describing Hill’s quarterbacking skill set!
11-5... My 49ers pre-season prediction!

Generation Gap:
Perhaps it’s a generation thing. Think of the history of the word "sucks" and what it may have meant 50 years ago. Right now it means nothing more than "played poorly" or "very poorly." There was a time when it meant something a little more like it "sounds." I hate the word because of what it conjures up in my mind, for the younger generation it is probably quite different. Go ahead, use what ever words you like—we old guys will try very hard not to let words bother us (but it will probalby be with varying degrees of success).

I never thought that Smith was a bust.
I just thought he wasn’t number1 overall material, and I still don’t believe he is. I think everyone that called Smith a bust really jumped the gun. He hasn’t had enough time surrounded by good players or in the same system. Him sitting on the bench and having the system down and watching from the sideline, plus resting his arm was th ebest thing to happen to him. It’s good to have Nate Davis just in case that arm acts up again. But there is no need to draft a QB early whether it’s a winning team or not. If he doesn’t have protection the FO knows what it needs to do. Any QB can look great with a sound running game and protection.

Yup
I want us to stay as far away from a top 3 round QB as possible. It would be such a gift to have Smith become an above average QB so we can really, and I mean really focus on the lines during the draft. I wanted despretly for us to go with Rodgers (Cal bears!!) and was a little bit let down with Smith, but without regurgitatiing the reasons (and there are many) why Smith hadn’t yet got a fair shake, it was nice EVEN FOR A HALF to see the mobility, arm and football brain he was billed to be. Nothing can recreate the magic that was Montana, Young and to me really Garcia, but we have a young team with some decent options at QB. Please oh please York, lets get some line help! Looking back, and I believe it was said up a ways, Smith was a high ceiling player that is finally giving us some hope (vs previous play) that may be the case and I for one am stoked. It has been a fun week of speculation and waiting so far!

+1,000,000 on Garcia. He was great for a few years there. But, the QB options are only half-decent unless Smith can show that he can consistently perform somewhat near the level at which he performed last week. I have zero expectations that he’ll perform that well going forward.

QB's
But there is no need to draft a QB early whether it’s a winning team or not. If he doesn’t have protection the FO knows what it needs to do. Any QB can look great with a sound running game and protection.
Nope, not buying this at all. QB is perhaps the biggest need on the team minus one good half of Alex Smith and your solution is to ignore it in the draft? Abd then to say any QB can look great with a sound running game and protection is all kinds of silliness. How’s Tarvaris Jackson working out?
QB is the most important position in football. Notice how arguably 2 best franchises in the last decade (Pats and Colts) have also had the two best quarterbacks. And most of the other top QB’s in the league have been on consistent winners (Big Ben, McNabb, Rivers, Eli) or at least have had prolific offenses (Drew Brees and Kurt Warner). Then look at the worst franchises over the last decade, the Niners (yes), Raiders, Lions, Browns. Have any of them had any decent QB’s the last 5 years? The best way to have a consistent contender is to find a great quarterback and doing so should be the Niners top priority, even if it means they have to use a 1st round pick this year to hope they find the right guy.

It wasn’t because he played poorly. He had a good sophomore season and got hurt 3 games into his 3rd. He was coming around when he got hurt the first time. I considered him an injury-bust. When it comes to play, it’s was still too early to label him a bust. The guy was playing pro-ball at 20 years old! He’s only a few months older than Flacco and Ryan. He can still do it. 2 first round picks
Think about what seems to have happened last week:
1) After all the talk and fear of losing Crabtree, he showed up and looks great.
2) Alex Smith gets playing time and looks like he might be ready to realize the potential he was believed to have in 2005. (i.e., better than Aaron Rodgers at full maturation.)
These are potentially huge events.
If Crabtree had sat out the season and gone elsewhere, that is a “1” wasted.
If Alex Smith had languished and eventually been traded, that is a “1” wasted.
Realizing the potential of your first round draft picks is generally absolutely critical to rebuilding. You can say I am drinking kool-aide, but scouts said Alex Smith was young and unprepared and that he would take longer than Rodgers to mature, but that he had MORE potential (-more athletic, more speed, excellent reads and intangibles).
The 49ers have just transformed from a fool’s hope to real contenders, though that actually starts next year after we draft Oline and …other stuff.
We have 2 1’s in 2010. If we have a good draft, and Alex Smith plays well, the 49ers are a real contender. (This assumes Crabtree is a star, Vernon Davis and Patrick Willis continue their pro bowl level excellence, etc.

in the short term, the difference between Rodgers and Smith
has nothing to do with Rodgers and Smith and everything to do with their offensive systems.
Rodgers came into an offensive system that was ranked 8th, 2nd, 9th, 18th, and 3rd over the last 5 seasons, yardage-wise
By contrast, Smith comes into an offensive “system” (using that term loosely) that was ranked 23d, 32nd, 26th, 32nd and 26th over the last 5 seasons, yardage-wise.
It makes sense that Rodgers would have success because of that continuity. Correlatively, it makes sense that it will be an uphill climb for both Smith and the Niners’ offense.

Singletary seems emotional and pig headed but
going back to his days in Chicago as a great middle linebacker, he always actually seemed extremely intelligent. I read his biography ages ago. I think he wrote it himself more or less. Very authentic, impressive and interesting. (I recommend it.)
I think he understands the situation in SF. This is a time to develop players, not “win at any cost”. So far so good.
We have some great skill players at key positions: Davis, Willis, Gore, Crabtree, Smith (we hope). After the next draft we can be contenders. Rebuilding is a process, not a transformation that comes from speeches and emotion. (That comes after you have the Hampton’s and Dent’s and Payton’s in place.)

He must have ignored his offensive line
An offensive line is 100% necessary for even a mildly effective running game. For a passing game, it’s only 90% necessary. Our LOLine is useless, thus, our passing game is going to be more useful than the running game because our QB doesn’t need the LOLine to perform adequately quite as bad as Gore.

Its simple
With our weak offensive line/pass protection you need a mobile quarterback. A few of those plays Smith made to get out of the pocket, Hill would of been sacked. The way I see it is that give both Hill and Smith all of the time in the world Hill would be a better quarterback. Hill would of got us in field goal range that last play. You see Alex Smith, he looked like he was flustered on that 4th down play. WIsh they would of called a timeout. But I hope Smith is our QB of the future, it gives us so many options for the draft!
How many times has Joe Montana thrown an interception in a super bowl?
by Tony C on Oct 29, 2009 8:42 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Hill would have got us the field goal?
I don’t think so, he can hardly throw downfield. Not to mention Smith was under pressure on that final drive and Hill could have been sacked at some point while Smith wasn’t, that would have really hurt.
by Brendan Scolari on Oct 30, 2009 1:46 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I Doubt It As Well
Do you know how many times that happens at the end of the game. I mean there were only 32 seconds left and with the delay of game it was 4th and 10.
Besides if our defense had held them on 3 and out and we didn’t have a holding penalty Smith would have had 2:00 or something and two timeouts starting from outside the 20. At the point the chances of him leading us into field goal range would have increased at least two fold. Starting from inside your ten with a limited amount of time left really lowers the odds of scoring at the end of the game.

Look at the game film
Alex Smith came in with the Niners down 21-0 and was successful when the Niners stayed in the spread offense which just happens to resemble the offense he was successful with in college. Are the Niners going to be able to keep their defense off the field running the spread exclusively? No, so the longterm solution isn’t going to be Smith. Both Smith and Hill are placeholders until either Davis develops or the Niners get someone better in this draft.
by thomas d on Oct 30, 2009 10:22 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Wouldn't You Rather Be An Optimist?
They can’t run the spread offense entirely, that just doesn’t work in the NFL. But what they could do is filter it in here and there, about 25-30 percent of the time. Who says Smith’s success in the 2nd half cannot translate to a more traditional NFL offense? We have not seen him fail at that this season so until we do shouldn’t we be reserving judgment?
Listen i am not advocating Alex Smith here as the saving grace of this offense, especially after just one half. But what i am doing is giving him another chance to prove that he isn’t a bust, at least in my mind. His success means 49ers success and both are what we as 49er fans strive for. Lets just take a wait and see approach until about week 11 then assess his success at that point.
This Nate Davis bandwagon is also starting to piss me off a little bit. Handing the mantle over Davis after just 4 pre-season games is way too premature. I think as a project Nate Davis could be the answer, but he is nowhere near ready and won’t be in the 2010 season either.

I’m not doubting your premise or your conclusion, but… why, exactly does the premise lead to the conslusion? Is it because defenses will adjust? Is it because it was a “once in a blue moon” effort from Smith? As written, you provide no actual evidence that Smith will NOT be successful. I dont think that
anyone but the Dolphins use the spread offense exclusively…and even they put themselves in normal formations from time to time.
If the Niners can mix it in here and there, it only increases the Niners chance of offensive success. The more you can mix up the play-calling, the more you increase the looks you present to a defense. The Niners last Sunday did not run the spread exclusively anyhow, they mixed it up quite a bit if you go back and watch it again…or even the highlights for that matter.
The Patriots ran this sort of offense in 2007 when Brady threw 50 TD passes. I’m not implying that Smith would or could come close to that record so don’t get off track of the point here. The point is this, if Smith has the defense spread out, his passing efficeincy sky rockets. His last year at U of Utah he had 32 TD passes and 4 INT’s. Now this is pro versus college but consider the efficeincy rate there.

belief
If Smith takes a pounding from defenses every game then he’ll suffer bad. It might be good to use both Smith and Hill. Why? Because they both do certain things well. Hill is a good game manager and doesn’t make horrible mistakes often. Smith can throw and read defences well. Perhaps there’s some way to use them both? Either way as long as the line isn’t doing well then it won’t matter what quarterback you have a brutal beating will eventually put fear into a quarterback and he’ll make mistakes.

With all due respect
I can’t think of one team that used alternating QB’s in the same season that ever succeeded. The current situation in Philly is just plain weird. Just last week Vick was put in on a 2nd and 10 , threw a 4 yard pass, and then was taken out. WTF was that all about?
The future ain't what it used to be.

Down 0-21
WITH NO EXPECTATIONS OF PRODUCING
No pressure to have Smith second guess his reads.
This week I expect the Alex Smith of the preseason. This preseason he had quite a bit of pressure to win the starting job, resulting in “same ole Alex Smith”
His passes still float just as the old ones did. That and 2nd guessing will have him throw at least 2 INTs.

Float?
did you mean the one over throw to Gore that would have resulted in a short gain or loss even? Those passes looked pretty crisp and on target.
I think that coach Singletary will just tell him to relax and go out there and have fun. If Alex is having fun, he increases our chances of winning
