QB Alex Smith Odds & Predictions

Last week, the day before the 49ers took on Houston, we ran official Michael Crabtree predictions.  The closest prediction ended up coming in from 49er16 who went with 5 receptions for 50 yards.  Crabtree finished up with 5 receptions for 56 yards.  I don't have a prize at this point, but given how close he came, I'll see what I can come up with.  More to come on that.

Earlier yesterday I received an email from Bodog with some interesting odds for this weekend.  The first two are related to Alex Smith:

Alex Smith - Total Passing Yards Week 8 vs. the Indianapolis Colts

Over/Under: 179.5

Alex Smith - What will he throw more of Week 8 of the 2009 NFL Regular Season?

TD Passes: +105

Interceptions: -135

Feel free to consider those, but also, throw out your general predictions for Smith's performance on Sunday, whether it be the actual yardage total, and/or touchdowns and interceptions.

After the jump we have a few more interesting, non-49er odds...

Star-divide

If Jake Delhomme Starts Week 8 vs. the Arizona Cardinals, what will happen first?

He will throw a TD Pass                                                  3/2
He will throw an interception                                            1/1
He will get pulled from the game for another QB                5/1
None of the above                                                          10/1

If Jake Delhomme does not start, how many passing Yards will the Carolina Panthers have Week 8 vs. the Arizona Cardinals?

Over/Under                    200.5

Jake Delhomme - Total Interceptions Thrown Week 8 vs. the Arizona Cardinals

Over    1            Even
Under  1             -130

Crabtree

I figured for last week it was a one-time thing. Kind of like this one is a one-time thing because I had the odds emailed to me. People can feel free to make Crabtree predictions in here though.

Good job 49er16 but where’s my props!
just kidding.
I thought I was pretty close too on the Crabtree prediction with 5 catches for 60 yards. I guess it was offset by a bunch of predictions I made about his play getting those yards that were half wrong.

I think I missed that one, but just read it over again. Maybe we’ll just say price is right rules (closest without going over!)

and what if someone would have said 57 yards,
so close…

I'm an optimistic Smith supporter

And I’m still starting Matt Stafford over him in fantasy this week. Colts have only given up two touchdowns through the air all year. Over because of the adequate passing attempts, but take the INTs as well.

Guy I dropped to get Smith? Delhomme (its a deep league), who has reached the point of total worthlessness. “More than 1 INT” is an even money bet, haha.

Smith

O/U on yards – I would bet over with no hesitation.

TD/INT – This is tougher. If we win it’ll obviously be TDs. But any other scenario is possible. Especially if he’s trying to bring us back, more INT are a possibility. I see a 2-TD 1-INT game so I’ll take the TDs.

Prediction – 22/31, 256 yards, 2TD, 1INT, sacked twice.

And how about 6 receptions for Crabtree, including his first TD.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

over

on the yards. either because alex smith is finally the real deal. or because The Paytonettes get up by 28 early and its pass pass pass against a vanilla defense.

If I was a gambling man

I’d take those odds in a heartbeat. I’m thinking around 250 yards passing with a couple of TDs and 1 INT.

Predictions

Alex Smith
O/U 179.5 - I say take the under, because the Colts are expecting a pass-oriented attack, we will run the ball efficiently. Smith won’t need to pass for more than 179 yards, because our ground game will keep the Colts off the field.

TDs vs. INTs – Take TDs, because he’ll thrown 2 compared to just 1 INT. Vernon Davis catches both again.

Alex Smith’s line – 170 yards passing, 2 TDs, 1 INT

Game results: SF 20 IND 17

If you may or not be able to tell, I’m being quite optimistic here.

by Andrew Davidson on Oct 30, 2009 12:07 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

well looks like good numbers ill say

i think smiths line will be 1Int. and 200 yards passing.(withen 10 yards either way on passing)

no TD i think any TD will come with the run. rushing i think you will have right around 120 yards

i think final score is 31-10

I sure hope not

Because I’m taking the over, so if the Colts do win by a blowout I hope it’s 38-10 instead of 31-10.

how if your taking over for TD-INT then you need the score at

least 14 for you as you need smith to get two TD and doesn’t matter if we score 31 or 38

I meant to the over in the over/under

as in total points, not regarding the Alex Smith’s TD/INT numbers, I’m talking total score.

hence the reason I mentioned if the colts win by a blowout I hope it’s a higher score than you predicted. try to keep up, I know you’re a colts fan, but that’s no excuse.

Honest question

How much of that do you credit to the Colts defense and how much is more related to the passing games the Colts have played? I’m only seeing one good passing game on the past schedule (Arizona) and two decent QBs, Warner and Pennington, the latter playing on a team that prioritzed the run vs Indy.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Oct 30, 2009 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

well i think

that id atribute the majority of it to the defense. the reason is almost any QB not named (russell, anderson, or Quin can throw a pass to an open reciever and you would see more TD you would think. so yea im sure the QB’s we have faced has something to do with it like it always does but i think most is thanks to the defense

Fair enough

I would see it as both but I’m an outsider, thus I’ve seen less of Indy but also have no bias. I don’t doubt the Colts D is very good as they are built to play with the lead and get after the QB in a way we’d like to. But in paying attention to the passing games they’ve defeated, only Warner in AZ and the receivers in both AZ and Seattle stood out a being a threat. Jacksonville, Tennessee, Miami and especially STL (we know from our big win) have no WRs I would consider a threat. These passing games are one step above STL and Cleveland, IMO.

I also couldn’t help but think that if the Niners had the #6 pass defense with that schedule, this board would be questioning how legit it is based on past opponents.

well you will always have those questions

espcially when you have had an easy scheduel tthis season so far. as you may no we are known to have a good D and especially a good pass D in general. while the QB and WR on the teams you have mentioned are not great. exeption (AZ) and theres have struggled this season. id still give the edge in the reason to the D but do see what you are saying. our real test will start next week i think though but as of right now i say you got to give the D the credit cause a QB and WR can have a good game, make passes and catch if they are playing in the NFL even if they are not great.

Never have to apologize for playing well

And ultimately the 16 game season proves the strengths and exposes the weaknesses. Larger sample sizes reduces speculation. As for our offense, if your D shuts us down we won’t be considered a good test. If Smith has a good game some people on our end will say it’s because Indy’s defense it overrated since they hadn’t played anyone. I think we should feel good about any success since your team is one of the best out there. For me, no matter how well or poorly Smith plays I’ll remember that it’s only been 6 quarters of game time (including last week) and I expect he and Crabtree, and thus the unit as a whole, to get better.

Appreciate the back & forth.

your welcome i imagine that means your out.

ill just end i suppose by saying that although up to this point with the exeption of a game or two mabye smith has been a bust. however i hope that the last game was a sign of good things cause your team def has gotten better since the last few years and crabtree i think if last week was any indication will only help. and gore is a decent running back so keep working on the line and the corners and i think your are def. in contention year in and year out for the division mabye heven become the favorites if smith can actually be consistant. anyway i think at the least we see if smith has learned anyting from his two year hiatias

My predictions

Smith 17/26, 188 Yards, 0 TD, 1 INT

Gore 125 Yards 2 TD

Remember people, only two people have scored a passing TD against the Colts:
Seneca Wallace – TD thrown with 00:19 in 4th Quarter Down 10-34
Kurt Warner – Warner is much better than A Smith (as of today)

Also, they give up there TDs on the ground. This is not a good week for Smith to get his first start back.

Titans: (4-4)
Bears: (5-4)

Jaguars: (6-5)
@ Seahawks: (7-5)
Cardinals: (8-5)
@ Eagles: (8-6)
Lions: (9-6)
@Rams: (10-6)

Record: 10-6

Arizona must lose to:
@Bears or Seahawks at home
Vikings
@Niners (obviously we will destroy them)
Packers

I pick Arizona to finish 10-6 also, we win the tie braker and go to the playoffs

In all seriousness

I think we should run a “spread type offense” and pass a majority of the game.

Alex’s last year in college he had 32 TD passes and just 4 INT’s. Yes, it’s just college and I know that. However, you have to consider the efficeincy. He seems to make less mistakes when working for a shot gun.

Maybe Raye should consider running a run-and-shoot type of offense like the Jerry Glanville ran for the Houston Oilers when they had guys like: Warren Moon, Mike Rozier, Alonzo Highsmith, Drew Hill, Ernest Givens, Curtis Duncan and Haywood Jefferies, etc. I beleive that Buddy Ryan was running the defense at the time also. I remember them giving the Niners hell in the 80’s when we played them a few times.

Colts defense is built precisely to stop the spread,

I don’t have any predictions but want to say that I’m not going to be too down on Smith if he has a bad game this week. The Colts are about the worst match up he could go against and expecting him to do fine is a lot to ask a guy who has had almost zero playing time for the last couple years. A lot of how Smith plays I think we be on what Gore and the coaching staff do to help him out.

Amy Mainzer my brain thinks your brain is HOT!

by cybermaldonado on Oct 30, 2009 3:52 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Is that a joke?
Colts defense is built precisely to stop the spread,

The Pats have owned the Colts by running a spread style offense. Not to mention that the Colts having 2 rookie corners and a banged up SS in Sanders makes it a bit easier to have an edge there. I say go after them early and go after them often.

As of right now, the Colts are overrated. They haven’t beat a SF defense, or a Baltimore defense, or A Patriots offense who can go blow for blow with, or a Broncos defense (probably best in the NFL right now)…. they play all of these teams coming up. Those will be the tests. They HAVE NOT been tested at all yet. Our defense is getting no credit here.

Is Manning good? Yes, the best QB in the NFL arguably right now. Does that mean he’s NOT capable of mistakes or having a bad game? Absolutely not.

Look they have an edge, but it doesn’t equal that Alex Smith or our defense is going to get pumbled this weekend. I happen to think the Colts will win also but it doesn’t mean I am completely writing the NIners out before the game even begins.

Sanders banged up??

i guess you can caracterize it like that but i say finally healthy after returning from knee surgery. as he has said (feels better now than he ever has). anyway as i also have said we have had an easy schedule so far but i wouldnt say overrated because we have done exactly what we should have done and that is beat and beat well for the most part the teams we were expected to.

yea but i think this is defrent in at least as much as it was said before the titans game

that he could play but they decided and he did or at elast as you thinking that of course he says that. they decided to wait till after the bye which he was wanting to make sure he was ready. and although i guess anytime a player praises the player backing him up it can be taken as only saying it to be nice but i dont see that as being the case as bullitt wasn’t just in there replacing him 100% cause even before the injury bullitt had plenty of playing time as he wil know.( sanders doesn’t play every play plus with his history he shares reps)

done exactly what we should have done and that is beat and beat well for the most part the teams we were expected to.

And thats what I am saying, you haven’t played anybody with maybe the exception of the Cards worth saying is worthy.

If you guys play your typical “Cover 2” like you normally do, the seam routes can work against you. If Crabtree, Morgan, and Bruce have any kind of success then your in real trouble because Vernon Davis can explode at anytime. Now we have a QB that can get him the ball.

Our defense isn’t all that bad either. Pre-Atlanta we were ranked 4th overall in the NFL. All I am saying is that when teams are over confident, that’s typically when they get beat or upset and slapped back in to reality.

Obviously the Colts are the favorite but there are weaknesses and they can be exploited

ill first say i dont think they are over confident that is usually when you get stupid statment if you know what i mean (MJD). yea i know you were not necessaraly saying we are. also yea that is the weakness fo the cover 2 but everyone knows that but can you exploit it and most teams have trouble doing that and you wouldnt be able to do it all game. yea your teaam for the most has been good on D but does have some big wholes i think.

I just dont think their defense will be able to keep up.

Alex Smith – 25/35 283 YDS 2 TD 0 INT
Gore – 20 ATT 135 YDS 2 TD RUSHING
Crabtree – 8 REC 75 YDS 2 TD

REALLY?

One half is half of one whole game.
In one half smith had 206 yards 3 TD’s.
That is without a full week of preparation.

If we were to double one half of play it would equal a whole game.
So if we extrapolate the statistics it would be 412 yards and 6 TD’s.

Even though I disagree with 412 yards and 6 TD’s
283 YDS is 69% and 33% of those extrapolation.

Again, with no game plan or preparation.

plus you must be stariotyping us colts fans with you assuming i live in indy cause i dont. also just cause he did that in a half doesn’t mean he would do it in a full game most times when a player does a lot in one half they trail off the second half they dont double there first half stats that just isn’t how it works. also we are a diffrent team.

in all due respect ANGELSFAITH

First why are you coming to a 49er message board to just stir the pot by saying the same things over and over again to different people? Second do you know how to spell anything at all? It is possible that every post I have read from you has at least one misspelling. I think that you can agree with the fact that the colts have not been fully tested, their defense has played well thus far against the teams they have played against but the have not been tested. This week could be a test a may not be a test. So how about you just unplug the keyboard until Sunday and then watch the game.

Predictions:
Alex Smith 17/25 195yds 2TD
Frank Gore 27 touches(rec and rush) 155 total yards 2TD both rushing

(show some respect) and if you have to say with all due respect then you obviously dont mean that show it with what you right. plus im not the one trying to stir up anything you and goatfather are trying to cause trouble with me i have been civil the whole time as you would know if you read my posts

so

many people have openly admitted that “your” team will beat “our” team. We have admitted that your team is more talented than ours. All we have said is that you can’t write us off as a for sure win. All you have is done is come to a struggling teams message board and bad mouth us. Cut our hopes down. To me that is not being civil. That is stirring the pot. and not a couple conversations have led to the same thing almost all of them have. I hope we kick your a$$ this week and you can eat all your words.

by metalman763 on Oct 31, 2009 1:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

idk what you are talking about

i have not once bad mouthed your team i not once said your team was bad. i have only stated that you are awfully high on smith even though he has only had one good half. i have stated repeatedly if you read my posts that you team is good but has big holes. i have stated that the week point is the QB and that i hope he does do well and if that happens then you with crabtree that looks like he will be a great reciever and gore who i think is a good running back, that you could be contenders at least in your division year in and year out if not winning it. to me that isn’t CUTING DOWN HOPES AT ALL.

obviously

this conversation/argument is going no where so im just going to leave it at go back to your own message board and talk sh!t about the Niners we know they are struggling we are just trying to be optimistic and all you are doing is pointing out obvious facts that we all know already. it is fairly annoying. so good luck on the game tomorrow…NOT later

OBVIOUSLY YOU DONT KNOW WHAT SHIT IS

because if you did you would know i wasn’t talking any as you claim and as i just told you mabye your editor can show you and explain what a conversation is and take you through my posts and you can see that i did no such thing cause obviously you need some help with it

We don't allow that kind of language here

It’s against site decorum.

Many people now have issues with your posts. Do you really want to continue to argue that you’re in the right? You are, after all, a Colts fan at a 49ers site.

Do us all a favor and just chill.

man i havent done anyting so yea i still beleive im in the right

plus u didn’t start it two 49ers posters (metalman)being one started it. second what language?? if you mean the word (shit) i wasn’t the one that first used it it was the poster above me. second i didn’t call anyone that but he said i was talking in that manner and obviously he didn’t know what that ment if he thought i was. second if you got a problem with me then talk to fooch. i would be happy to talk to someone who will show me the respect i have shown this site.
i was having perfectly pleasent conversations with people before goatfather started this and metalman continued it.

Smith

275 yards, 2 tds, 1 int and a fumble lost.

Delhomme

I would take none of the above at 10-1 odds and hope for a fumble lost.

predictions

Smith
I’m gonna go with 20 out of 30 for 258 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT’s. 2 rushes for 16 yards. sacked once.

Thats my official prediction but I think thats if it will be a really close game. If unfortunately we end up playing from behind more than I expect, than it will be more like 2 TD’s and 1 INT, and sacked twice, but I’m not counting on that.

Crabtree
In the first scenario, I think Crabtree gets more attention from the defense so doesnt improve the stats too much from last game. 6 Catches for 70 yards.

Gore
I think change of pace in this game is where we see Gore get 22 carries for 120 rushing yards, and that does not include longs runs of more than 20 yards.

just looked at Ninjames nuggets

and Crabtree’s Thursday transcript about his performance. Not sure how much better he could have done but he’s aware of many things he could have done better. So that somehow make’s me feel better.

Gotta be more optimistic and change my predictions. If 49ers are going to upset Colts, it’s gonna to have nice story lines come together aswell, like Crabtree with his first touchdown. So Crabtree will get 6 catches for 80 yards, and 1 TD.

Now I feel we have too many offensive weapons so not sure how else the offensive TD’s will be spread out. It would be a random guess,Gore Morgan Bruce, maybe even Walker since he’s getting lots of snaps.

Looks like Gore's gonna have a big game!

I don’t think so.
He may slip a big gainer in there and get over 100, but I just don’t see much more. We haven’t been able to run on anyone, even teams with horrible records versus the run.

What I like are Gore’s chances of passing yards out of the backfield. Whether we are successful through the air or not, Gore will get a lot of dump-offs in a game where we will have to score points.

This will be a shootout

Alex will have his best game as a pro QB, and Crabtree will have that monster game we all knew he was capable of.

My new signature will read:

look i see these predictions you guys are making and i also made one.

HOWEVER by the numbers you give you would think we were predicting a game for some star QB a (farve) or something. look i know you all hope that smith will be able to prove himself and show that he has gotten better and isn’t the #1 draft Bust in 05 however i know at leasts for me i would want to see some games played and him do well before i say something like that. all im saying is is it not premature to after seing two quarters of him this season after basically two years off to just assume he will come out and be a (rivers or schaub) type QB?? to me just because he had a great half coming in last week does not mean he will be able to throw for almost 300 yards and 3TD. could it happen sure it could happen but i think the chances are not great. i guess that although he in his 5 year career has done nothing you all still have the confidence that he will live up to his #1 draft pick status and will then hopefully hold him to it and not be satisfied with anything less. for your sake i hope he does well but dont get your hopes up becase of one half see what happens over some games. if you didn’t know he in his career in a single season worth of him playing no matter how many games he has never ended with more TD than interceptions his closest was 06 when he had 16TD and 16INT in 16 games

Seneca Wallace threw for 257 yds in Indy

His doing that certainly tells me that Alex can throw for at least 250.

Also realize that some of the predicted numbers are a compliment to Indy. A belief that either you guys will take such a big lead that we’ll be forced to pass and thus rack up some attempts and yardage in a double digit loss, or that Smith will play well but be forced to try and win a shootout against a great offense. If Smith was a rookie QB or even getting his first playing time this season, I’d say people are being unrealistic. But because he has started games, has talent and played well last week, it’s not at all out of the realm of reality that he’ll put up good stats Sunday.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

well like i said yes it is possible.

well actually he hasn’t as far as people have said started a game this will be his first start since november 12, 2007 against use where we killed him. he is talanted though and it makes sense what you said about having to throw. i thank you for bringing reasoning without insult or stiring up any trouble like a couple of people. nice talking to you
