Golden Nuggets: Marvel Smith and Michael Crabtree dominate the headlines
And we're back for another round of links. Naturally a vast majority of these end up having to do with the flurry of Michael Crabtree news from yesterday. It's tough at this point to tell what's news and what's non-news. Yes Crabtree is supposedly coming to town and one would imagine it's for the purpose of negotiating. And yet, the links would have you believe Scot McCloughan has nothing planned with them at this point.
As many folks said in the threads from yesterday (primarily this one), we're probably now at a point where we might as well just hope for a signing, but in reality pay next to no attention to it. That would certainly make life easier.

Who cares if he's on the bandwagon
Like it or not, his talent could really help the 49ers. Let’s see how many fans hate him after he scores some touchdowns….
That said, I’m sure Singletary will whip him into shape.

i agree, i could care less, as long as he can contribute to the team that’s all i care about

I hope I'm wrong
but I’ve got a bad feeling about Crabtree. He might have skills. He might be able to help the O. But so much of the Niner rebirth is based on having the right attitude.
Well, if he signs, at least we know Coach Sing will be watching him carefully. He missed boot camp. If he doesn’t come with the right work ethic, I have no doubt Coach will sit his ass down.

It's all been a bluff
Crabtree has everything to lose. With a new CBA with hard rookie caps in 2011 looming, next year’s draft will be filled with great players of all positions. The latest I’ve seen is 5-6 wide receivers of comparable talent who’d enter the draft without a broken foot, a year and a half out of football and no diva contract tag. That doesn’t count all the quarterbacks, D and O linemen, corners, etc., whose value to a team would be higher than Crabtree.
If Crabtree sits out all of this year he loses four million plus and a year in his life. He could conceivably slide all the way out of the first round, meaning almost all of that guaranteed money would be gone. He’d be yet another year away from a second contract. In short, there is no way he can make the money he’s about to lose.
Any agreement with another team, if true, is unenforceable and so Parker and Crabtree cannot count on it and can’t even go to anyone to complain if they get stiffed. It is unlikely that a team who wanted Crabtree this year would be willing to pay him more than the Niners’ offer because, quite frankly, in the next draft Crabtree’s value will have plummeted.
Long short, this has all been a bluff and at the end either Crabtree signs or he commits financial suicide. If he does the latter he’s probably to unstable to be counted on as a pro football player.
His choice.

Correction: too unstable
Gotta keep ahead of the spelling police. I can’t afford another arrest on my record.

Just sign!!!
I just really hope he signs, i have been waiting way to long for this moment and i think its finally here. Lets just look at the bright side of things for a sec and remember that this kid was the top reciever in college and aside from the diva label we know this kid has tremendous upside. Who knows this kid may turn out to be a player totally opposite of a diva in part because we really dont know whos running the show. We all know what kind of agent parker is and the experience he has with the agent business, he has alot of great talent under his belt and including the best wideout at the pro level which im sure helps alot when it comes down to manipulating crabtree. At the end of the day this is still a business and most of us dont really know what goes on behind the curtain . With mike singletary as his coach i have a strong feeling this kid will mature and have a good mentality and he will bring some of those great plays he performed in college. I still think that him signing is alot better than getting a 3rd or 4th rounder in next years draft because it would be a total waste of a top 10 pick and we would probably end up drafting another bear pascoe, which would leave us with nothing for a top 10 pick. So lets just add a real threat to the recieving corps and even if he doesnt catch any balls im sure defenses will have to pay attention to one of the best recievers that ever played the game at the college level.(even if it was in the spread offense)

The one that really gets to me..
Is this Peter King article that hands out the 1/4 season awards. Not even a honorary mention of Coach Singletary for Coach of the Year. Who has done more with less? Singletary has to be in the conversation right? I think this is a blatant case of East Coast Bias.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/peter_king/10/06/mail/index.html?eref=T1
The one that really pisses me off is no mention of Patrick Willis for Defensive Player of the Year. Really? No mention at all? Does Mr. King have Rabbit Ears on his TV, and only get local games? Did he not watch the 49ers/Vikings game? I am stupefied that there is a list of Great Defensive Players and Patrick Willis is not on it. No mention at ALL! He quite possibly could be the Best Defensive Player in the LEAGUE! Never have I been more pissed about the East Coast Bias more than after reading that article.
That will be the LAST Peter King article I will ever read. He obviously is blind past the Mississippi. Is anyone else IRATE that neither Coach Sing NOR Patric Willis didn’t make their list? Am I Biased to the point that I am blinded by my Niner Passion that I have overestimated Coach SIngletary and Patrick Willis’s Abilities? I watch a LOT of football, both College and Pro. I have NOT seen a better defensive player than Patrick Willis period! Coach Singletary deserves honorable mention with the job he is doing in San Fran, despite the talent he has to work with. I mean they are 3-1 with hardly any offensive players. Is that not a heroic effort? Am I way off base here on either of these points? Or has the East Coast Bias caused Mr. King and many of his East Coast Contemporaries to go from Biased to Myopic?
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!
