Week 4 NFL Power Rankings and the 49ers
Even with all the Crabtree talk, we still want to hit up our weekly features, including the composite power rankings. Nine sets of rankings probably isn't all that many in the grand scheme of the Internet, but I figure a grab-bag of random rankings is sufficient for our purposes. I've made one addition this week: the previous week's ranking is included in parenthesis. I've even included last week's composite rankings at the end of the rankings so we can see how things are moving in the composite.
ESPN - #12 (15) - Mike Singletary is keeping the 49ers grounded, a good move given how many games remain.
- Arizona - #19 (19)
- Seattle - #24 (23)
- St. Louis - #32 (32)
The Big Lead - #9 (10) - Patrick Willis is the best defensive player in the NFL. Try to argue this and I’ll show up at the nearest bar at noon, watch 12 straight college football games, run up a huge tab, claim some scraps off the dance floor, then write about it. Do you dare?
- Arizona - #20 (20)
- Seattle - #24 (19)
- St. Louis - #32 (29)
Fox Sports - #11 (12) - WHAT A SURPRISE: Well, the fact that the Niners actually should be 4-0 (damn you, Favre!) is surprising enough, period. And guess what, they're not going away. WHAT A LETDOWN: The only real downer has been the ridiculous holdout of first-round WR Michael Crabtree, although he is reportedly is in the Bay area to talk with the team brass.
- Arizona - #18 (19)
- Seattle - #22 (21)
- St. Louis - #30 (30)
CBS Sports - #14 (17) - Mike Singletary has that defense playing well. And the offense isn't making big-time mistakes. That's his stamp on this team.
- Arizona - #18 (18)
- Seattle - #22 (19)
- St. Louis - #30 (30)
Pro Football Talk (via NBCSports.com) - #12 (15) - Apparently, the possibility of getting a Super Bowl ring is all the pot-sweetening that Michael Crabtree needed.
- Arizona - #22 (22)
- Seattle - #25 (24)
- St. Louis - #32 (31)
NFL.com (Brandt) - #14 (16)
- Arizona - #18 (20)
- Seattle - #25 (25)
- St. Louis - #32 (32)
NFL.com (Brooks) - #11 (13)
- Arizona - #18 (18)
- Seattle - #26 (24)
- St. Louis - #31 (29)
NFL.com (Carucci) - #9 (8)
- Arizona - #17 (16)
- Seattle - #23 (21)
- St. Louis - #32 (31)
WhatIfSports.com - #7 (10)
- Arizona - #16 (23)
- Seattle - #20 (22)
- St. Louis - #32 (28)
Average 49ers Ranking: 11.00 (12.89)
Average Cardinals Ranking: 18.44 (19.44)
Average Seahawks Ranking: 23.44 (22.00)
Average Rams Ranking: 31.44 (30.22)

Agreed,
What I keep thinking about is what these so called ‘experts’ would be saying had we beat the Vikings. The rationale going for the Broncos in these rankings (I don’t know where they’d average, but I’m guessing 5-7 range) has been their being undefeated, aside from the fact that the best team they’ve played was a Bengal team that looked out of sync, and they were luckier winning that game than the Niners were losing to Minnesota. I don’t know, where I’m going with this, but the Vikings loss somehow presents a little hypocrisy in justifying our ranking being as low as it is for the power rankings.
Once we beat Atlanta, it will be interesting where they put us then.
Chris Cohan- YOU'RE FIRED!
Never ever thought I'd agree with him about something

I've never been happier to have Crabs
I Have A Question
Did PFT mention the 49ers and a Super Bowl ring in the same sentence? I just want to make sure the tea i got from Starbucks wasn’t laced

31.44 is probably last.
I’m not 100% sure, because you’d have to show everyone’s average score, but 31.44 would likely be last place out of 32 teams.
Everyone hates a pink-shirt-wearing communist.
playoff team
we are starting to get the respect of being in the elite catagory of contending teams. i do feel however every analyst seems to hate our progress and almost doesnt want to talk about the team success. the times are changing and our culture is going to sneak on them by storm and i think hill is very underated at the helm we just need a little bit more help from the o line to being a true super bowl contender
LOL rams

I've got two problems
Carucci dropped us from 8 to 9 even though we pounced on the Rams
And whatifsports moved the Cards from 22 to 16
WTF?
They got better just because of the BYE week?
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

I agree with the first sentence, but I don’t think I quite understand the rest….
"Pat is still just scratching the surface." - Coach Singletary on LB Patrick Willis
Glad it wasn't just me
I read it three times and just figured it wasn’t worth trying to decipher.
"This could be another Very Special Team" ... Superbowl winning Niners lineman Dan Audick ...

Maybe...

that seems like a good explanation

giants
why are the giants regarded so high when they havnt even played a playoff team from last year yet
Perception being reality
And they may be that good. They’re perceived to have great depth especially on defense, solved their one glaring issue (play makers at WR) and are coming off a 12 win season that saw them win the East and are one season removed from being champs. They’ve got the street cred plus play in the media’s division.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
giants recievers
its not hard to look good and put up numbers on bum defenses the jury still is out for me on these giant recievers
No disagreement
That they had such a good game against Dallas, The Media’s Team, on SNF, it helps provide the perception that they are very improved. I’ll be interested to see how Eli and his WRs do after Thanskgiving when Giants Stadium gets more cold and windy.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
I'd rank us as 10
At this point, no higher than 8 and no lower than 12. A win over ATL makes us a no arguments / all legit top 10 team in my opinion. At 4-1, any analyst that ranks us out of the top ten will either have a bias or has chosen to not pay attention.
