Trade deadline is upon us...

Like the headline has stated there are only 2 weeks to go before the trade deadline will pass and of course there will begin a lot of rumors as to who should, could and need to get traded. It was just reported that the browns traded Braylon Edwards to the Jets. Before yesterday's interesting day with hammer and crabtree I was one who was thinking that maybe the 49ers would make a play for a wr before the trade deadline.  I'm sure we will hear and read a lot of rumors involving our beloved team but I am sure that I am not the only one who believes that something a little more is needed on the offensive side of the ball. I'm not saying that need is a wide receiver because of the new developments of yesterday but I will say that I believe the team needs to make a move for a more savvy offensive lineman to help give Shaun Hill protection.  I no longer believe we need anything added on defense because the defense just looks great and I'm more content with Manny,Willis, Spikes and Parys than ever before.

I am not in the know but I know what we need as do you; so with the trade deadline coming up does anyone feel that the 49ers should be making a move for a new player? Or even quite possibly another draft pick? I don't see us trading away a player but you just never. What should the 49ers do before the trade deadline?

Two weeks ago...

I would have wanted a safety to replace Michael Lewis, but he was solid against the Vikings and had one of his best games against the Rams. I like Adam Snyder, but I like him better as the first guy off the bench at any O-Line position, that said the price usually isn’t right on tackles. Maybe it’s just afterglow of the 35-0 beatdown of the Rams talking, but I think the 49ers have a pretty solid roster right now, no disgruntled players..do we really want someone elses problem right now? Those are the guys that usually go on the block.

I'd like to pick up a young, healthy good Offensive Guard

someone with two or three years in the league that could have signing issues with the team they are on currently.
The Niners could offer a draft pick from next years draft or a wide receiver.

They're called RUNS for a reason.

i think we all

agree that someone on the line would be great because what we have right now is not cutting it as this exact moment. Good teams will expose the weakness. Johnny I’m actually okay with M.Lewis at safety and I think it would compliment him well to pick a very good FS up in the draft to put beside him. Not that Goldson isn’t good I am just not sold on him being THE guy but he could prove me wrong

Goldson has been playing pretty damn well. Berry and Mays could potentially be upgrades in the draft but I the o-line is a much, much more pressing need that we’ll probably need to address with at least one of our two first round picks.

I think...

… the 49ers could definitely shore up their offensive line. Snyder/Pashos thing is iffy at best, and apparently the guards are just flat out iffy (which is to be expected by a second year guy and a guy who has always been iffy).

by sfgfan on Oct 7, 2009 10:01 AM PDT up reply actions

With that said...

… a midseason trade is just very unlikely. I just don’t see teams deciding by week 6 that’s its time to hangup the cleats and throw in the towel. They should really push the trade deadline back to at least past the half-way mark of the season, say, around week 10.

by sfgfan on Oct 7, 2009 10:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Disagree

I always hate to see the Yankees make a late season trade a month before being in the playoffs… Although with the NFL cap, things would be a little different… I would think you would only see teams under the cap that werent expecting to make the playoffs making these trades. Any contender would not be willing to give up a player of considerable caliber to get a similar player. So the only thing you can really trade are future pics. You would be mortgaging your teams future for a possible short term gain… But also football is not like baseball…. you need to learn the system… baseball is a game not a sport…

Uh.

I’m pretty sure that most, if not all franchises, would rather take a shot at the Super Bowl when they have the chance, rather than speculate on whether or not they have the chance next year. I’m not saying it’s good business, but I don’t think the book is as slammed shut as you think it is on this.

I’m not even saying teams should give up a lot to trade for marquee players. Most of the trades that go down at the MLB deadline are mediocre role players, and the situation still applies to the NFL, where mediocre isn’t that different than elite at a lot of positions.

An example of this is the San Diego fan post someone put up sometime ago. They have a lot of pending free agent veterans that aren’t RFAs and only so many tag(s) to go around. You don’t have to give up a first or second round pick to pick up a guy in the last year of his contract. If a team believed that a trade involving a third, fourth, or even fifth round pick could improve their team enough to make them more competitive in the quest for a Super Bowl, they’ll do it. If a team is holding onto a pending FA they don’t intend to franchise, they’ll gladly take the third, fourth, or fifth round pick for it, rather than let the player get away in FA for nothing.

i'd like week 8

I Don't See Any

Offensive Linemen available. Unless of course the Chargers want to avoid losing Marcus Mcneil without getting any compensation during the off-season. But they are still in the thick of things. I would agree that they should move the trade deadline back like in MLB to at least the midway point. This way teams that are not in contention can trade to teams that are in contention and stockpile pick for the draft.

yeah i agree

i don’t see any lineman out there for us to get which means that we more than likely will not make any moves during the trade deadline. And I also agree that they should push the deadline back; i wouldn’t say week 10 though I would say week 8 right at the half way point. By then teams know what they want and need and can see where they are heading

Perhaps week 10 might be pushing it...

… but I think week 8 is a bit early to throw in the towel, too.

So how do the Niners "fix" the O-line?

Next year’s draft? Offseason? Better coaching?

Alaska is a state, dammit! Can I get a Niner game on TV up here?

by kinglouie33 on Oct 7, 2009 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Fixing the O-Line....

… (among other things) shouldn’t be that big of a problem considering the team will have four picks in the first three rounds, and maybe even more (depending on how the whole tampering thing goes). I don’t think the Jets will get penalized that high, but you’ll never know.

Basically, the 49ers could probably use a couple of starters, especially with Baas, I believe, on the final year of his deal. A replacement for Baas and a new RT should do a lot to solidify the OL for the future (but probably not immediately).

Draft

8 offensive lineman in the 2010 NFL draft; hold an entire offensive line “competition”…haha. Resign everyone else and let them ride the team chemistry train.

by Drew Kerr on Oct 7, 2009 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Just kidding obviously

Staley and Heitmann are good. The rest of them are questionable. Bass, Rachal, and Snyder or Pashos definitely need to work harder

by Drew Kerr on Oct 7, 2009 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions

How long did we hire Pashos for? And other thoughts

I thought we got him for only 1 yr but I read nocal say we had him thru 2k11.
Also regardless of that I say we pick up Colledge from GB in FA and maybe also McNeill (though he’s not a right) Then there might be some picks around for O-Line like OT Charles Brown from USC, OG Zane Beadle from Utah and/or OC John Estes from HI (Heitmann is good but a bit long in the tooth, does anyone know how Cody Wallace is?)
So imagiine a line with Staley and McNeill at bookend tackles, Heitmann and Wallace (and maybe bringing in Estes) at Center with Chilo and Colledge as your tackles and for depth you have Brown (T) , Beadles (or Estes) at G. Oh and let’s not forget our boy on the PS now, Alex Boone. That’s not too shabby a line, not fabulous but not too bad at all.

Pashos

It’s a 1-year contract. Over at nflpa.com they have player base salaries and it only shows 2009 (they show all years of a contract).

by David Fucillo on Oct 7, 2009 5:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks Mr Fooch :-)

I was wondering and also wondering “The Place” for looking up contracts.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Oct 7, 2009 5:19 PM PDT up reply actions

I Was Shocked To Read That

Pashos was signed through 2011. I mentioned that on my previous fan post. But fooch got his information from NFLPA so i guess we go with that. I will attempt to find that link that showed him signed through 2011

Playoffs? Playoffs? Playoffs? Your Talking about Playoffs? Yes Sir I am!!!!!!!!!!!

by nocal81(Vincent) on Oct 7, 2009 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Pashos was always a 1 yr contract

He thought he would be starting on our team and turn it into a lucrative deal. He signed 1 yr for less than he wouldve made with the Jags if he just renegotiated his contract. So not only is he making less, you think he is signed for 2 years? The only reason he took less, is to get game tape on him so he can sign a bigger deal in the off season. Trust me, it’s 1 year.

by hudd07 on Oct 10, 2009 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I wonder if Alex Boone could step in as a Guard after the bye week.

They also picked up the Guard from the Minnesota Vikings, he is on the practice squad

They're called RUNS for a reason.

by connie mack on Oct 7, 2009 9:43 PM PDT reply actions

I doubt it

I’d like to see him stay on the PS and try to earn a roster spot next season

Who makes the decisions to make trades?

I know Coach is excited about every single player that is there. He just said recently the line has potential to be the best in the league, but they have underperformed. He said he will meet with offensive line coach and see what is wrong, hopefully meetings like those will turn it around.

Sometimes a player can step up and play better, but that hasn’t happened with the guards or with the Pashos signing at the tackle rotation. Besides just every day practicing, another thing that could happen is the coaches to have a meeting like this. Kind of like a batting or pitching coach in baseball look specifically at body physics of a player and see if some technical adjustment can improve the player besides just getting more and more practice.

But in terms of the trade, it would have to be all about the money aspect and come from above in the organization. So, Coach isn’t going to say, we are pressured and need a new offensive lineman, just like he wasn’t at WR during Crabtree’s holdout.

Why the O-line sucks

They are slow off the snap.

yeah no way they are one of the best lines in the NFL.

I LOVE Sing but everytime he says that I’m like, WTF?

He says they COULD be one of the best

And they probably could, but they need a LOT of work.
