hey fooch
what is going on with SB Nation? NN has been acting really strange for me today. After I read a post it still acts like I haven’t. For example when I click back to the home page this thread still says 18 new comments even though I am here now and reading them. I guess what i’m trying to say is it’s not recognizing when I read a post. Is it my computer or the Nation as a whole?

temporary problem
The network tech folks shut that feature off (I think elsewhere around the network as well) b/c it was causing some kind of problem. Should be back on sometime soon.

Was that his first press conference? I don’t think i’ve ever seen him speak before…
by Badly Browned on Oct 7, 2009 12:03 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm pretty sure...
… he had some sort of press conference/interview in front of a lot of people after he was drafted (i.e. when the 49ers presented their draft picks).

I liked
What I saw. Crabtree gave the right answers, but he seemed happy to finally be signed and looks excited to play.

he should've just said.
you know, i left it up to my agent. He thought that this would’ve been the best thing for me. Now I am signed and we are going to play.

I think
For him to admit he was humbled by everything is good. It shows that he wishes it could’ve gone differently. Diva or not, this is a guy who loves to play football and I want to see what he can bring.

What was he supposed to say?
I mean, thats the thing with these press conferences. You gotta go by the script or he will get lambasted. You can tell he’s camera shy.

Thought it was important to note
What Singletary said about Crabtree, “I never heard him say anything, and that’s important.”
Yes, we have to blame crabs for this holdout, but in the end he was probably just listening to his agent and letting him do his job. It all got done, we got an extra year out of it, and Crabs will be playing in 2 weeks. So it’s time to move on and get more excited for this team.

basically said that the team is focused on the falcons and he is more concerned with the players on the field at the moment. It was previously stated by the Coach Sing that he would not be playing this week. He did say that things might change during the bye week. He confirmed what everyone was saying, that he’s a hard worker, a football player. So, we just gotta wait now and see how quickly he can pick up Raye’s system.
by Typecast on Oct 7, 2009 12:24 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
D’oh….
Hill was good. Seemed very poised and carried himself well. Basically said that while he looks forward to playing with Crabtree (and not having to answer holdout questions anymore) that he still has his eyes focused on the Falcons game.

Hill is kind of like an extension of Sing right?
When you listen to Hill speak, it’s obvious how affected he is by Sing, and you can see how Sing loves him. He’s more mature than most players, more like a coach wouldn’t you say?

I Love
That Crabtree said it was a humbling experience. At least he told the truth. Because there is no way in heck that he wasn’t humbled by it. Plus him saying that he is not a number guy, i wonder how true that is, but it was the right thing to say at the right time.

Someone who has YAC ability
by Drew K on Oct 7, 2009 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
Just look at his Yac at Tech. Not just was he a physical receiver when in the open field he just dominated. I look for him to open up the offense in the second half of the season with his abilities. The more playing time he gets the more open our offense will be. Davis is also very good in space, this will open up the running game and dramatically improve our offense as a whole

by TrojanCBB on Oct 7, 2009 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I Am Pretty Sure
That the signing team is responsible for the entire amount of the guarantee. I heard this multiple times from NFL insiders when some people mentioned signing then trading him. But i don’t have a definitve answer from the NFL. I am researching that now. Either way he won’t be traded.

by TrojanCBB on Oct 7, 2009 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i think it depends on whether its deemed a signing bonus or not. if the guaranteed part is a signing bonus then they owe it.
At USC we're not snobs, we're just better than you.
by TrojanCBB on Oct 7, 2009 12:43 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I Am Pretty Sure

Playoffs? Playoffs? Playoffs? Your Talking about Playoffs? Yes Sir I am!!!!!!!!!!!
by nocal81 on Oct 7, 2009 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
so we would pay him all of it up front and then it would be counted against the cap split up for the six years.
But I thought it was just guaranteed portion of the salary. so that you cant cut him without having to pay. guess not.
At USC we're not snobs, we're just better than you.
by TrojanCBB on Oct 7, 2009 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
That is why the guaranteed part of Smith’s contract ends this year. So we can release him after the season without any salary cap hit. If we were to release Crabtree after 3 seasons then then we would be responsible for the remaining 9 million guaranteed. I could be wrong though
Playoffs? Playoffs? Playoffs? Your Talking about Playoffs? Yes Sir I am!!!!!!!!!!!
by nocal81 on Oct 7, 2009 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You are mistaken
The Niners would be on the hook for all his bonus/guaranteed money. And it would all count against the cap next year. So the Niners would have to pay him $18M to watch him play somewhere else and take a $18M cap hit. What would be worth that?
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.
by methodrampage on Oct 7, 2009 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would guess
that as part of the trade the Niners could ask for $$ which would offset part of the bonus. But I doubt they should trade him.

For Jamarcus Russell. We all know Shaun Hill’s noodle arm is the culprit holding back the offense.
ZOMG . . . Jamarcus Russell! Defenses will drop back 25 yards and weez can run da ball.
by bignerd on Oct 7, 2009 12:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
BS, his arm is fine (not great), its the O-Line dude...No solid, consistant run game. so we go through the air
until the O-line can open up holes for Gore and Coffee we will be looking for the pass to set up the run..Which sucks because I know there have been many 3rd downs were we wimped and a couple of 4th down situations that Sing would have loved to punch it through on a run but there is no confidence right now.. Crab won’t be able to help with that unless he can block as good or better than VD..
by WC-Ninerhead on Oct 7, 2009 12:35 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No way!
We need Jamarcus, 4.4 YPA is irrefutable evidence that Shaun Hills sucks. If not Jamarcus lets trade Willis straight up for Tom Brady.

sure didn’t come off as a diva… also, I will echo those above who said it was telling that Sing stated “I hadn’t heard a thing from Michael.” It goes to show that this whole mess was engineered by his agent.

Disappearing act
Fooch, the promoted FanShots are still doing that disappearing act. I don’t remember if there was an actual reason for this or if it’s just a bug they haven’t fixed.
Basically, the FanShots, if they’re promoted to the front page, disappear from the “FanShots” page and don’t exist in the “Archives” page, either.
by sfgfan on Oct 7, 2009 1:42 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
FanShots
Are you talking about this FanShot in particular? Because when I create them straight to the front page (as I did with this one), it doesn’t show up in the FanShot list. I’ll email our people to see about correcting that.
by Fooch on Oct 7, 2009 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's right.
I think that was the explanation you gave me last time, too. I’m not 100% sure if I’ve seen it lately with a non-Fooch FanShot. Though, it’d be cool to have the ones you create on the FanShot page, too.

YES or NO question:
Does Crabtree supplant Josh Morgan in the starting lineup at any point this season?
by Florida Danny on Oct 7, 2009 1:57 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Morgan
I see him ending up in a 3rd receiver role for now…I like the idea of having him on the field along with Bruce and Morgan. Bruce is clearly a “possession receiver type” (big catch week 1 aside). Morgan is still hard to categorize in my mind…is he a deep threat? An all-around threat?
by Fooch on Oct 7, 2009 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i'll record that...
as a “NO.” ;-)
by Florida Danny on Oct 7, 2009 2:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
OK...simpler question:
Does Crabtree start any games this season, either by supplanting one of the current starters or because one (or more) of the WRs ahead of him on the depth chart get injured?
by Florida Danny on Oct 7, 2009 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wide Receivers
With next week’s bye week I’m gonna save this post for then, but I definitely plan on doing a rundown of the receivers. I really am curious to see what happens with Brandon Jones and Jason Hill at this point.
I don’t think Crabtree becomes a starter this season, but I see him as a sort of 6th man (to use an NBA comparison). He’ll get a lot of playing time but won’t technically be starting.
