49ers-Falcons Wednesday Injury Report
The 49ers remain a bit banged up this week. I remain convinced part of the reason Dave Baas is struggling is the continued injury issues. I realize he's been practicing a bit (or fully as in today) and playing each week, but it can't be easy to get into a sufficient rhythm to be a successful player. I'd love to hear other opinions, but Baas has definitely struggled and he has definitely been banged up. Maybe they're related, maybe not.
The Falcons are currently in decent shape with their only non-practice guy being a backup safety. While it's nice to have a leg-up on a team, it's even better to beat a team that has no excuses. The Falcons have no excuses at this point, at least that I can tell.

I'm sure this has been discussed elsewhere, but I can't sift through the thousands of posts.
What are the odds of Crabtree playing on Sunday? Or maybe the game 2 sundays from now?
Why do San Francisco teams insist on having terrible offenses? Frank Gore and Pablo Sandoval can't do it all.
sunday
He’s not gonna be on the 53-man roster this Sunday (roster exemption). Probably gonna play some after the bye at Houston.

Thanks!
Other than that, I think we’ve proven we can win without Gore. This will be a tough game, playing an average-to-above-average team without our offensive star, but I have hope.

Beating the Rams...
… without Gore and beating the Falcons without Gore are two totally different situations.
How did Rossum get injured?
Was he injured before the Rams game?
I don’t believe he was listed on the injury report….
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.
I had read
that he had an illness (I think flu)(and don’t recall where I read it) before the rams game. Then when I saw he was not actiive for the game I thought that was why, but it was a coaches decision in order to have an extra LB. And now it’s his back?? This was weird to me also.
I will say that with exception to the td that got brought back on Coffees penalty, Rossum has looked a little slower this year.
It's the...
… Rich Aurilia ghost injury train!
whats with the signing of another OLB
I never noticed, but if Manny or Haralson go down we don’t have much behind them.
Brooks has showed really good signs but I dunno about 3 downs. Harris the same.
Is Evans capable of playing OLB in a 3-4, even for a short time?
I thought I read they signed an OLB for the practice squad today.

yeah
It just made me realize that we have no depth at that position. On the positive side, Manny has been playing very well.
What is going on with Justin Smith?
He’s skipped every Wednesday’s practice. Is he just that good that he always gets the day off?
Yes
I think they call it a “veterans perk” or something like that. Bruce and some of the other vets get it alot of the time (Spikes is another that comes to mind).
Not sure on if the players can decline it and practice, or if Sing thinks they need the extra work so it wasn’t offered, as to why others aren’t on the list of vets that rested. Usually there’s a few that might get/take the morning off and practice in the afternoon instead. So that part I don’t know.
Anyone else have a take on this?
I figure this
They are all in great shape but the older vets are probably more prone to injury. They are also more assignment sound. There probably isn’t much scheming going on in practice. Just making sure people are working on techniques and assignments. Vets don’t need much of that anymore and its better for the younger players to get more snaps. So it makes sense to allow them to skip some practices.
J.Smith
I think Smith’s position is a very demanding one, especially considering he gives it 1000% every down. For an older guy that has so much money tied to him, the 49ers are probably just trying to prevent him from wearing down over 16 weeks (or more!).
Is it time to play Wragge?
I’m not suggesting full-time replacement but Baas but he is playing like a guy who is injured. Wragge would give us more consistency particularly in pass blocking and Baas would have two weeks without game contact to heal.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
Would you...
… deactivate Baas in this case? If so, you’re then left with a second-year guy backing up the center.
I wouldn't since he can still play
This way only in an emergency. Seems his injury is good enough that he can play but bad enough that it affects his ability. Might as well let a healthy player with experiece play and give him two weeks of healing.

If you don't deactivate him...
… you have your backup center playing LG, so if the center goes down, he’ll have to shift over to a position he hasn’t practiced at all week. I guess if Heitmann goes down at all, it’s going to be a hot mess, but at least an actual backup there will have had some practice there during the week.
I remember Baas being considered a G/C when he was drafted, but I don’t think he’s played any center since getting here.
