Fooch's Note: This is a great idea for a FanPost and definitely worthy of the front page. I think I'll put together something a little more formal later in or after the season. But for now, what were you wildly wrong about?
I was just sitting back thinking to myself, how many times have I put my foot in my mouth based off of comments in the offseason? Way too many to count. We all are here to stress our opinions during our rooting for the SF 49ers.
Just wanted to touch base on a few things that I KNEW would be the case and so far this season it has just not been the case.
#1 49ers pass rush- NEVER thought it would be as successful as it has. I thought Manny may come around and after the PB& J weight gain program, I just knew he'd be weak this season. Insert foot here :().
#2 49ers blew it not taking E Brown, boy was I wrong with this one. Our backup OLB and Starters are young and hungry and I look for them to get better as the season progresses. And we have an extra round 1 that looks good. Deposit left foot here :()
#3 Crabtree WILL NOT sign!- We all know how that worked out!
#4 The Titans would be fine without Haynesworth, and the Redskins would be a lot better, yeah right!
Please share your thoughts that have been proven to be wrong!!
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

I'm with you
on the pass rush. I never thought it would be as successful as it has. Even when we don’t sack the QB, he is on his bum a lot.

They weren't stunting with the pass rush
they were going man on and pure strength

And me!
After the anemic pass rush during the pre-season I was sure the 9ers would be duds again this year. The current rush gives me a rush.

So far just Mike Nolan’s defense. I didn’t think he’d have anything on that line to make that unit competitive. I’m still not convinced that defense is elite. So far I think Nolan has been out scheming some pretty dim witted offenses but I didn’t expect them to even be average.
Oh wait, Nate Davis showing any kind of promise this season was the other one.

I have to admit, I was wrong about Crabtree to. I also thought he would never sign with the Niners because they weren’t budging on their offer. I thought for sure he was going to sit out the year.

One thing that Crabtree did was nothing. He did not talk trash... He did not make threats
So now, I am very pleased he is a 49er…. Especially with Nate Davis coming up in a year or two… that could be two thirds of the best receiving core around. the other, and many had their doubts, is Vernon Davis.. that kid is a blocker and receiving TE.. I am, after a long drought, reallly excited about the 49ers future.

Yea, I caught up all the trash talk by other folks and I kind of put that on him
So, I was wrong about him on that account. I must say though that the “diva” thing is still out there as an unknown. I will reserve final judgment on that for a while yet..

In My Opinion I Am Always Right, Thats What Makes Me Never Wrong
But back to reality
1. I Thought Alex Smith would win the starting job. Not because he deserved it but because the 49ers had so much invested in him
2. I Was also upset with us not drafting Everett Brown and trading the pick to Carolina. Well look at it now!!! Probably going to have a top 10 pick now
3. Didn’t think i would ever join a site like this. Or twitter for that matter. LOL
4. Thought Indianapolis would have a whole bunch of issues without Dungy and Harrison.
5. Expected Buffalo to contend in the east LOL
Well that all i am going to admit right now. Remember i am 100 percent right 99 percent of the time!!!!

4. Thought Indianapolis would have a whole bunch of issues without Dungy and Harrison.
With you on that one. After Anthony Gonzales went down with his injury, and after Marvin Harrison got left on the side of the road, I figured that would be even more for that offense to overcome. Instead, they remain one of (if not the) the best teams in the NFL.
IMO, this is further proof that the quarterback makes the receivers – and the coordinator, for that matter.
My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.

1. I said that Crabtree would definitely sign before the first game. Then I said that he would definitely sign by the end of week 2. WRONG on both counts.
2. I said we should expect the offensive line to be better. WHOOPS.
3. I thought the defensive line was woefully undermanned and criminally unimproved from last year.

Well these were my bold predictions
For fun I have included Fearless Frog’s response to each of my predictions. Darn those Seagulls, always flapping around! Should be fun to see how much he was out to lunch about.
My predictions are marked with a P, his response is marked with an FF.
P. Niners go 12-4 in regular season and make it to the Super Bowl.
FF. This is so idiotic that I don’t even know where to begin. I’ll remind you that the 49ers haven’t even had a single winning season in the last 6 seasons despite being in arguably the weakest division of the decade. I’ll leave it at that.
P. Three Niner WRs have 600+ Yard Seasons and at least 3 Touchdowns
FF. Possibly, but unlikely, especially when you factor in that Shaun Hill or Alex Smith will be manning the helm.
P. Gore breaks the 1200 Yard Mark this season
FF. Possible, likely even.
P. Alex Boone wins the starting RT spot
FF. Not a chance. There’s a reason the team gambled on signing Marvel Smith. And veterans always take precedence on the depth chart, meaning if Smith gets injured again or continues to be ineffective like he recently has, those two clowns Adam Snyder and Barry Sims will get the nod. Boone will be fortunate to even make the team.
P. Micheal Spurlock beats out Allen Rossum for the starting kick returner spot
FF. This is also extremely unlikely. Rossum was great last season, including taking a kick all the way to the house, he’d get the benefit of the doubt even if Spurlock was awesome in camp and preseason.
P. Niners top receivers are Morgan, Jones and Bruce
FF. I expect it to be Bruce, Crabtree, and Hill in that order, but there’s little point in arguing this.
P. Alex Smith wins and holds onto the starting spot
FF. Wins, possibly. Shaun Hill has a reputation of stinking it up in practice. Holds on? Unlikely, unless he’s highly improved since the last time he started.
P. Tarell Brown wins Walt Harris’ spot
FF. This is possible, still doesn’t bode well for the 49ers. All this would really mean is that you can confirm that Dre Bly is done.
P. Gore, Spurlock, Morgan, Jones, Boone, Staley, Haralson, Tarell Brown, Willis, and Nedney go to the Pro Bowl
FF. An absolute joke. Gore could run train over everyone and he still wouldn’t beat out Adrian Peterson, Michael Turner, or the Carolina RBs, to name a few. Spurlock probably won’t even be the starting kick returner. None of the wide receivers will have a shot in hell when you factor in who’s throwing them the ball, the run-first offense, and competition at WR. Boone will be lucky to not be stashed on the practice squad. Staley won’t solely due to established OTs who’ll get in by name recognition alone (Walter Jones, Orlando Pace, Flozell Adams, Bryant McKinnie, etc. Haralson isn’t even the best pass-rusher on the team. Tarell Brown wouldn’ t even be voted past Nate Clements even if Clements continued to suck. Willis is almost a lock at this point, so you can include him. Nedney, not a chance.
Willis and maybe Gore are the only 2 that even have a remote shot.
P. Niners sweep the Cards and the Seachickens (and the Rams of course)
FF. So they’re going to go 6-0 in division play? They couldn’t even beat the Seahawks led by Seneca Wallace, and barely beat the Rams.
P. Curtis Taylor, Scott McKillop, Bear Pascoe, Ricky Jean-Francois, Michael Crabtree, Alex Boone, and Glen Coffee all make the 53 man roster
FF. It’s unlikely all of them make it.
P. Ahmad Brooks leapfrogs Manny Lawson and becomes a starting (and dominant) OLB
FF. The organization would never give up on Lawson that quickly, especially since he’s an asset in coverage. And if Lawson hasn’t lived up to his first round status yet, how would Brooks suddenly become even a starting-caliber OLB?
P. Mike Singletary wins coach of the year
FF. Even if the 49ers made the playoffs this would be highly unlikely.
P. A Niner rookie wins rookie of the year
FF. The only one who has even a snowball’s chance in hell is Crabtree, and unless he’s channeling the spirit of Rookie Anquan Boldin, this is not going to happen.
P. Alex Smith wins comeback player of the year
FF. Absolutely not. There are about a dozen candidates who would win over Smith even if he had a Pro-Bowl worthy season. Tom Brady, Matt Hasselbeck, and Carson Palmer would win it over him even if they had barely acceptable bounce-back seasons.
P. Niners end Kurt Warner’s career with a constant barrage of monster sacks (personally I’d like to see Justin Smith or Jeff Ulbrich do it. Just seems so fitting.)
FF. They had Smith and Ulbrich last season and their pass-rush was as useless as ever, so this isn’t going to happen. In fact, it’s more likely Darnell Dockett bursts through the paper o-line and hurts Smith or Hill.
P. Niners secondary ends the season in the top ten in interceptions
FF. This is almost an impossibility.
P. Niners D ends the season in the top 5 in the NFL
FF. Won’t even be top 5 in the NFC even if everyone performs way over their heads.
P. Niners offense ends the season ranked number 8 in the entire NFL
FF. Don’t have the talent for that.
P. Niners D ends the season for at least 8 opposing players
FF. Considering how rarely a player is out for the season due to an opposing defense, this is almost impossible.
P. Spurlock runs 3 kicks back for touchdowns and ends the season as the number 1 kick returner in the NFL
FF. Just, no.
P. Niners special teams end the season ranked in the top 5 in the NFL (hardly a bold prediction)
FF. Their special teams wasn’t all that great last season aside from Lawson.

I can’t believe how much Kool Aid I was swigging when I was talking about the rookies and Spurlock and Alex Smith! Man, that’s almost embarrassing!
However, I think I may have had some statements in there that seemed to others to be crazy but have since become definite possibilities. (12-4 record, D being top 5 in the NFL, secondary top 10 in interceptions, special teams ranked top 5, etc.)
What do you all think? (By the way, I’m seriously impressed if you read that whole comment.)

The thing I love about Davis this year is how he’s not afraid to take the hard hits. He’s got no problems going across the middle. He’ll go up between two defenders, even if it means getting killed.
Gotta love a player who’ll take a beating for the team.

TBH
I haven’t been too wrong about anything so far this year, at least not 49ers-wise. I had faith that Haralson would, if not solve the pass rush problem, at least be “good enough”. Lawson has been a welcome addition, but I never really gave up on him either. I hoped that after a year of recovery his knee would be ready to go. I never once thought Crabtree wouldn’t sign. I thought the offense would also be “good enough”, and I thought the defense would be awesome. It’s been fun to watch this team play, but from August I knew we were good. The 49ers haven’t really “surprised” me.
Seeing Vernon play so well has been a nice surprise. I HOPED he’d be this good, but to see it in person has been awesome.
What HAS surprised me is the Broncos being 4-0. Fluke or not, they haven’t lost and that’s pretty ridiculous. Same with the Bengals and how good their defense has looked. And stupid Green Bay- I thought they were going to win that division, but alas. They look like crap.

Before the season
I predicted a 10 win season—looks like we should get that.
I knew Crabtree would sign, only I thought it would happen the first week of the regular season.
My big mistake was in expecting a breakout year for Alex Smith (whom I still think Nolan did wrong by). I hope he gets a chance to prove he’s not a bust with another team.

I was wrong about...
Pass rush. Could still be a little better, but it apparently does exist, sometimes makes a difference, and against teams with weak O-lines, its actually knocking the snot out of quarterbacks. The offense in general and QB play aren’t quite as crummy as I thought they’d be, and they’ve even won a game in which Frank Gore saw almost no playing time. Admittedly, it was the Rams, who’ve begun playing something that looks like Division II college football the last couple of years for some reason, but they won. Last year, the 49ers would have sunk without a trace.

Dang!!
I was going to post a fanpost like this in the next week or so. Beat me to it. Anyway, I’ve been wrong on too many things to remember but here’s what I can think of:
1) 6-7 wins is what we can expect. It’s still possible but I’d be pretty disappointed with either win total at this point.
2) The defense would not be much better than average. I was pretty adamant about this. Oops.
3) Nate Clements is in decline. I’ve been pretty impressed with his play so far, Vikings game aside.
4) Crabtree would sign before the season started, another thing I was adamant about.
5) Once the season started and Crabtree hadn’t signed I expected him to sit out the whole year.
6) The Seahawks and Rams would be a lot better, the Cardinals would be worse. Only the Cards are following form so far. The Rams are completely incompetent.
7) The pass rush would be not very good again. Looking good so far at least.
8) Josh Morgan would be the Niners leading receiver easily. Hasn’t really come to fruition yet.
9) Not really anything I predicted, but I didn’t expect the defensive line to play so well. McDonald, Justin Smith, and Franklin are all playing like studs.

I tip my cap that you're willin to post this
After the final preseason game there were many strong opinions flying around stating what the Niners couldn’t and wouldn’t do; many of those have thus far been proven wrong.
I’ve been pretty spot on with my few hard declarations relating to the Niners. I was wrong in thinking that San Diego’s defense was fixed and would make them a top 5 team in the league and for predicting that Pittsburgh would add an improved running game to their talented squad and be a dominant 13-3.

Don't evaluate Morgan by his stats ...
… or even a memorable drop or two.
Morgan is in a place that’s similar (but not as bad) as to where VD was last year: he’s in a situation on offense where he could play very well, and not put up very impressive statistics.
He’s simply not having enough balls thrown to him, and he won’t so long as this team is helmed by Shaun Hill, who prefers (or is coached to, let’s not rehash that) throw short.

I was a little more optimistic than most of you, even though I don’t have actual quotes of saying it but I thought that:
*Crabtree would sign before week 1 and compete for R.O.Y. (WRONG!)
*Crabtree would sign mid-way through the season (1/4th, pretty close)
*The Niners would win 9-10 games(Possible)
*The 49ers would win Division(It’s a Lock!)
*Singletary would win Coach of Year! (Maybe?)
*Our Defense would be top 10(Definitely)
*Offense would be worst in Sacks, turnovers, and yards(Wrong!)

No solid runnig attack at 1/4 mark.
I must say that I had high hopes for a more effective running attack and I am quite disappointed at what we have so far. I know Gore had the on great day of 2 80 yrd TD runs but putting those aside for the moment we have only 405 yrds for the year over 4 games which is not what was advertised. I realize that it is not time to panic yet but certainly a concern.

The primary wrongs that come to mind:
- I believed Alex Smith would give Shaun Hill a better run for his money.
- Glen Coffee would not be that big of a drop-off from Gore.
- Crabtree would sign before the season started (though I did change this to before the deadline after the season did start).
In non-49ers related stuff:
- I didn’t think Sanchez (and the Jets) would have any success so early.
- I thought Tennessee’s defense would still be top 10 worthy.
- I, too, thought the Seahawks would rebound.
