Monday Night Football Cast
via www.blogcdn.com
Since joining NN, I have wanted to create a FanPost discussing the history of MNF as well as current events. Now I don't know about you all, and can only speak for myself, but I feel that the announcing for MNF has gotten more and more diluted as the years have passed by. Diluted meaning a lack of personality in announcing. I think with the exception of former Coach John Gruden, that I can without blinking, say that I whole-heartedly dislike the other two guys announcing (Mike Tirico and Ron Jaworski). How does one go from listening to the likes of people such as Howard Cosell, Don Meredith, Frank Gifford, Al Michaels, Dan Dierdorf and John Madden to Mike Tirico (who barely says a word) and a worn out and tired QB in Jaworski? Good question huh? Even the sideline reporting has become less interesting...I mean c'mon, O.J wearing his Isotoners (who knew the gloves would be so fitting)? Lynn Swann? Eric Dickerson? ...all better in my opinion than Suzy Kolber and Michele Tafoya...I mean if you're gonna give us chicks to be responsible for sideline reports, I would much rather see a Hawaiian Tropics girl with half a brain or even a Playboy Bunny (I hear Kendra Wilkinson likes football), something to look at, eye candy, ya know? The one thing that remains solid for me is Hank Williams Jr. doing the theme song prior to kickoff (hope they never replace him). Anyway, to sum up, I think that this could be an interesting topic of discussion. The 49ers have had some special moments on MNF throughout the years.
I want to sort of have fun with this topic. If you could pick 3 announcers (a fantasy announcer draft if-you-will), who would they be? Guys THAT ARE STILL ALIVE prefferably, but its up to you. Who's gonna be on your dream team? Mine goes like this:
1. Al Michaels (got to have a guy who has been there and done it before)
2. Steve Sabol (NFL Films guy)
3. James Earl Jones (He's Darth Vader, arguably one of the most recognizable voices on the face of the planet).
Okay, well that just about does it for me. Hope everyone has some fun with this topic. Feel free to throw out your most favorite MNF memories also. I am sure there are some classics that we all can share and, or, re-visit.
Side Note: The Arizona Cardinals come to San Francisco (OUR HOUSE) for a Monday Night game December 14th. Cannot wait for a chance to exculpate last years Monday night game. Who knows, maybe Crabtree or Gore will set a MNF record. Would be icing on the cake if we can pull off the win, 'ey?
Attached in the poll are few MNF football moments in time, vote for your favorite. Really wanted to go ALL Niners moments but decided it would be more interesting to mix it up (Something of which Jimmy Raye needs to learn)
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Madness in the booth
Bring back Dennis Miller (a very funny guy as long as you have a history degree, and have a thesaurus handy), the master of the obscure reference,
team him up with his MNF replacement: Madden, the master of the ridiculously obvious reference,
and ressurect Sam Kinison to do play by play ("Hand off to Coffee… HE’S THRU!!! HE’S THRU!!!! 3 YARD GAIN!!!! 3 YARD GAIN!!!! OH MY GOD!!!! AHH AAAAAHHHHHHH!)
That would be a fun team…. for one game.

Most memorable...
would be Rice’s record breaking night and Bryant Young’s broken leg… (honorable mention)- Stokes being spit on by Romanowski… he did what I as a fan wanted to do.
As far as the booth commentator this would be my list:
Al Michaels
Frank Gifford
John Madden
Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

Probably Sexist
But I’m with you on the proliferation of the sideline reporteress.
Less so than eye candy, I want someone who knows their stuff asking thoughtful questions on the field, and I get the feeling they won’t let a dude on the field if the best example of a question he can come up with is how it feels for a dude to play his last game before his 40th birthday.
49er 'til I die! (if they don't kill me first)

3. James Earl Jones
If you’re going to come up with non-booth guys for their voice, then I’d have to give my vote to Morgan Freeman.

(XKCD ftw)
Or who’s that guy that from 300 and Deadliest Warrior on Spike? He’d make a solid color guy.
My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.

If I could pick 3 announcers
I’d pick Kruk and Kuip, mixed in with a lot of Jon Miller. How’s that for your announcers? Miller can do the play-by-play, and Kruk and Kuip can take turns analyzing the game and drawing funny stuff on people using the telestrator thingy. :)
I know, I know. We’re talking about football here, not exactly those three guys’ area of expertise, but they’re just awesome.
(But on the real) If I had my pic of guys, it’d be Al Michaels, Steve Young, and Frank Caliendo. Why not Frank? After all, he DOES in fact have experience working with/for the NFL. He’s no dummy to the sport.

With Caliendo
You get like 15-20 more guys in the booth with all those impressions. Who knows, that may happen one day. Especially considering we see different guys every year. Or have at least since Madden and Michaels

I love this kind of nonsense
and a worn out and tired QB in Jaworski?
Actually, Jaws was a pretty good QB back in the day but beyond that, he lives near NFL Films, and has an office and a key to the building there.
Nobody (with the exception of working coaches) watches more tape than Jaworski.
That fact (combined with the fact that he actually PLAYED the game) contributes to the reality that he’s one of the best informed announcers in the business.
Nobody is better at breaking down film for the average fan than Jaws.
Anyone that doesn’t appreciate his knowledge of the game . . . doesn’t appreciate knowledge of the game.
