by Swager on Nov 1, 2009 1:17 PM PST up reply actions

Let's the Overreacting Begin...

Well, I was expecting another Atlanta game, but we held Manning to 0 TDs and 3 sacks.

Yeah yeah moral victories suck, but like the Texans game I see something to build on here. The Colts were more disciplined and won the TO battle. That’s what cost the game.

On another note, who we rooting for? Cardinals to beat the Panthers or Panthers to beat the Cards?

Oops, English fail in the title

by Badly Browned on Nov 1, 2009 1:19 PM PST up reply actions

Is this really a moral victory?

Sure the first half was good, but doing nothing in the second. Not much victory there.

by thegame1921 on Nov 1, 2009 1:21 PM PST up reply actions

Well, if Jimmy Raye wasn’t our coordinator I would say so. Our depleted OLine did give critical sacks, but overall didn’t seem like the deer-in-the-headlights OLine like we have seen before. Befuddling that we didn’t go into the spread at all that last series. Still, I think our turnovers that killed some good drives hurt the most. Offensive playcalling in the 2nd Half and terrible KR/PR hurt as well.

Until Jimmy Raye shows he can do more than just sit on his hands and passively call the offense with the lead I will only be so much as cautiously optimistic the Niners can go .500

by Badly Browned on Nov 1, 2009 1:36 PM PST up reply actions

There goes the myth about airing the ball out

Passed twice as much as ran. Couldn’t sustain drives long enough without a mentionable run.

Field position killed them in the game. Produced 1st downs but hard to score points when every position starts at the 10 yard line.

by bignerd on Nov 1, 2009 1:19 PM PST reply actions

game plan isn't...

just “pass more”…it’s when to pass…

by (Florida) Danny Tuccitto on Nov 1, 2009 1:21 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly

Just jabbing back after reading all week how the offense needed constant 4 or 5 WR sets and let Alex just air it out. Not so simple is it. The offense lost balance in the second half and didn’t produce a point.

by bignerd on Nov 1, 2009 1:23 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah

If we’d thrown the ball more we might have won.

by 10forTech on Nov 1, 2009 1:23 PM PST up reply actions

Cannot throw 6 straight outs to Crabtree per drive to produce a touchdown. Anyone notice the difference between the Texan game? Indy’s Cover 2 defense, takes away all the seam passes down the middle of the field which accounts for most the 49ers deep passes. The 49ers had to run the ball cause available passing routes were limited.

by bignerd on Nov 1, 2009 1:25 PM PST up reply actions

Didn't we run the ball?

Did we win?

And there’s no need to be patronizing. I never advocated:

…6 straight outs to Crabtree per drive…

by 10forTech on Nov 1, 2009 1:30 PM PST up reply actions

I was just pointing out that the Crabtree out route was the only pass play that worked.

Not an attack on you. The team didn’t really run the ball. Beginning the 4th Qtr the offense had run the ball 18 times and passed 27 times. The 4th Qtr was mostly passing, so you can imagine that final stat is going to look.

by bignerd on Nov 1, 2009 1:33 PM PST up reply actions

Did we watch the same game?

their defense stuffed the run.

We made progress with the pass.

by 10forTech on Nov 1, 2009 1:57 PM PST up reply actions

Mmm . . . for 49ers standard the run wasn’t getting stuffed. It was a mixed bag of results. There were a few drives where the run didn’t work but also a few were the run was working. They needed both run and pass to score points. The team passed the ball the entire 4th Qtr and nothing happened.

by bignerd on Nov 1, 2009 2:02 PM PST up reply actions

Yes

But you know they were expecting us to pass in the 4th because we were behind.

We put together a string of passes at the end of the 1st half that resulted in a touchdown. We should have come out throwing in the second half, IMHO.

by 10forTech on Nov 1, 2009 2:11 PM PST up reply actions

We started the second half "balanced"...

…and weren’t particularly successful. We didn’t get pass happy until the fourth quarter after the Colts went ahead. That last quarter is why we had so many more passes than runs.

by Bigmouth on Nov 1, 2009 6:30 PM PST up reply actions

3rd quarter...

6 runs, 5 passes. The main reason we had more passes than runs in the first half was because of that six-play scoring drive — all them passes — to end the 2nd quarter. I really think you’re drawing the wrong conclusion from these stats. When we passed, we had success. When we strove for balance, we stalled.

by Bigmouth on Nov 2, 2009 7:52 AM PST up reply actions

Like I already said...

…“We didn’t get pass happy until the fourth quarter after the Colts went ahead.” And even then, we drove from our own 21 all the way to the Colts’ 30 — primarily through passing — on our first possession of the fourth.

I really think the problem isn’t our ratio of passes to runs, which can mislead for the reasons we’ve just discussed. It’s the timing and allocation. We should be passing more at the start of the game, when high-risk high-reward play calling makes sense, then running at the end when low-risk calls that eat up time are optimal. To use an analogy from Advanced NFL Stats, it’s like portfolio investing.

by Bigmouth on Nov 2, 2009 11:13 AM PST up reply actions

Great Game Niner Fans

by coltsfan723 on Nov 1, 2009 1:20 PM PST reply actions

Was it the defense that let us down?

Or Jimmy Raye’s gameplan?

I think it was the defense that let us down late, allowing the Colts to easily march down the field and kill the clock. Fuck Dallas Clark, by the way. Overall though, I can’t blame the game on the defense, they held Petyon Manning to 0 TD passes and the Colts to just 18 points (and he was sacked 3 times). The defense had to come up big at the end, but couldn’t.

Overall, the offense partially stunk and the O-Line let Smith get sacked when it mattered most. However, Barry Sims did a fantastic job against Dwight Freeney despite allowing a sack. I just think it came down to the Colts being the better team.

by Andrew Davidson on Nov 1, 2009 1:21 PM PST reply actions

Hey, remember that one time when we were arguing and I was wrong? Yeah, me either.

by SanFranSoldier on Nov 1, 2009 1:23 PM PST up reply actions

I think the defense just fine

Cannot be blamed for only giving up 18 points to the Colts, giving them four 3 and outs, sacking Manning better than most teams in the league.

If you want to blame a unit, blame the punt return . . . again. Constantly that unit gave up good field position. When the Colts punter kicks the ball 65 yards and the 49ers get a measly 8 yard return is an epic fucking fail.

by bignerd on Nov 1, 2009 1:28 PM PST up reply actions

I agree

the defense did a fine job, I’m just saying they couldn’t come up big at the end because the Colts are the better team, and know how to finish off an opponent.

Brandon Jones making a catch at the 5-yard line on a punt return is ridiculous, so I think I tend to agree that the punt return unit can go straight to hell.

by Andrew Davidson on Nov 1, 2009 1:31 PM PST up reply actions

I'd like to see the braintrust logic

in cutting Rossum. Who suggested what, who pulled the trigger. It’s one thing if you’ve got a plan, but the one guy who’s a real returner still on the roster, Spurlock, doesn’t see the field as a returner. Battle was a fail. Robinson tries but he’s running in slo mo, you don’t want to put a precious d-back to return where he could get hurt, especially in a game against the Colts. Jones, let’s face it, doesn’t know what he’s doing back there.

Either put Spurlock back there to return, or cut him and get someone who can return.

32 passes, 18 runs

you wanted more running?

or did you want Alex Smith to be in the shotgun every time 49ers wanted to pass?

by Andrew Davidson on Nov 1, 2009 1:34 PM PST up reply actions

More real passes

Less horizontal passes vs one of the fastest D’s in the NFL. I would have rather seen Gore get more runs up the middle than those little dump passes that were being called.

Amy Mainzer my brain thinks your brain is HOT!

by cybermaldonado on Nov 1, 2009 1:40 PM PST up reply actions

Wasn’t a lot of vertical passing options. The Colts run a cover 2 defense which takes away the deep passes in the middle. More runs up the middle is how an offense is suppose to attack that defense. We still have the LOLine. It’s seem the LOLine cannot run block after the 1st drive of a half.

Under normal circumstances I’d call this a moral victory. But to be honest, I don’t expect Jimmy Raye or anyone on this team to realize the obvious and make changes to their gameplan. I have a sickening feeling that it’s gonna be run-run-pass for the rest of the season. As great as Singletary seems to be, the coaching looks like it will keep this team out of the playoffs

The 49ers played well but just couldn’t beat a very good Indy team at home. It looked like 49ers football again, like the 1st month of the season. If they continue to play like that the team will win the next 4 out of 5 games.

Rossum getting cut continues to kill the the team.

the dumb thing at the end of the half

was excessively celebrating in the end zone after VD’s TD.

that was dumb, Josh Morgan (and the rest of the team showboating) should’ve realized that the Colts and field position equals points allowed.

by Andrew Davidson on Nov 1, 2009 1:45 PM PST up reply actions

Yep

Morgan continues to make a bonehead play each game.

ATL – slowing up on a TD run.
HOU – was the 12 man on the field which Alex converted to a delay penalty.
IND – the celebration penalty was atrocious. Basically gave the Colts a cheap 3 points before half. I was yelling at my TV the second he joined VD.

by bignerd on Nov 1, 2009 1:50 PM PST up reply actions

Chilo Rachal could’ve just as easily been flagged instead of Morgan. He was doing the same thing, “snapping photos” of VD.

whatever...

excessive celebration is a BS call no matter what, this is a game of emotion and skill, i mean seriously i scream at the TV in my home… i couldnt imagine the emotion i had if i was really on the field, the No-Fun-League is wrong on their stance

by danknerd49 on Nov 1, 2009 1:57 PM PST up reply actions

wrong or not

rules are rules and players know the rules. when you break a rule, regardless of how dumb it is, you still get penalized. the fact that excessive celebration is 15-yards is dumb, considering holding penalties are only 10-yards. however, players need to realize committing those penalties hurt their teams and shouldn’t excessively celebrate.

Have you watched any CFL games? They are allowed to have team celebrations in the end zone, and it does not make the game any better. In fact, it’s quite ridiculous to watch.

by Andrew Davidson on Nov 1, 2009 2:02 PM PST up reply actions

Andrew

I love watching the CFL, I think I told you this before even though you do not like the CFL. Anyways… I agree rules are rules; I just dislike how the NFL is becoming more and more pansy, anyone who makes eye contact with Tom Brady gets a flag.

by danknerd49 on Nov 1, 2009 2:08 PM PST up reply actions

the excessive celebrations in the end zones don’t make the sport any more enjoyable. wasn’t trying to knock the CFL, just the dumb team celebrations in the end zone.

The Worst Call of the Game

Was when the Colts ran that hurry up play and got a cheap 1st down. Addai came out of the game so the officials by rule are suppose to give the 49ers time to substitute their own players. The 49ers defense got screwed over on that play.

So who here thinks that maybe

we won’t make the playoffs again…. and we should start looking at other coaches? mike may be here for a while, but really after another 7-9 season and all these great coaches that aren’t coaching (cowher, shannahan, gruden) do you really need to have the mike singletary experiment last another year at the risk of wasting away the franchise? he is a great interview and the whole nutcracker drill is really nice and all that, but if they don’t produce wins, and lets face it, they aren’t, then maybe it’s time to go in another direction. Just saying

Other coaches yes, but not a head coach.

We need a new OL coach and a new OC (That pains me to say that because I think that some of Alex’s issues are due to just that, as the Skins QB’s problems have been as well). I think that Mike can fire the guys up and is a perfect guy to lead this young team.

Wherever Mike Shannahan go's he brings a rushing game

His zone blocking schemes are unequalled in the NFL. Look at his Denver teams. Hes made nobodys into 1,000 yard rushers. Gore would be unstoppable in a Shannahan offense. But i dont see it happening.

Mike Holmgren on the otherhand has expressed interest in joining the 49ers maybe in the frost office after hes done coaching in Seattle. I would be ecstatic about having Holmgren being the HC or GM or anything between. I dont see any of this happening though.

Norv Turner might get fired if SD doesnt get far in the playoffs too. The 49ers would be stupid to not make him the OC again if hes available. This i see as a possiblity.

by Beatclash on Nov 1, 2009 2:02 PM PST up reply actions

I forgot about

Holmgren.

Any decision making spot on the team he had would help the 49ers tremendously. Plus he is part of the Walsh era, so that would be cool to bring back full circle.

and Coffee only had 1 rush I believe.

so the ypc is a bit misleading.

by Andrew Davidson on Nov 1, 2009 2:17 PM PST up reply actions

I don't disagree completely

just saying the ypc were misleading. Gore should’ve had a few more runs up the gut, but the run-calls that Raye make don’t give Gore a great chance at going anywhere, because they are all essentially the same play.

Why Cant Jimmy Raye Conceed?

That we need to transition to a more shotgun/spreed offense with A Smith under center? Pride should be checked in at the door at kickoff… get over yourself and your fundamental strategy and call the plays that help make us win the best!

by danknerd49 on Nov 1, 2009 1:50 PM PST reply actions

Pats realized that with Brady and actually if I remember the Colts realized that with Manning.

At least 50% (or close to it I believe) of their throws are from the shot. That gives them a better read of the D. I would agree that Raye needs to learn to be flexible. Someone sign him up for some yoga classes LOL

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Nov 1, 2009 2:02 PM PST up reply actions

Raye seemed to give up a bit on the running game by the 4th quarter

The thing i didnt like about it, was he called lots of passing plays out of running formations, with alex under center, and only 2 recievers. I suppose it keeps the defense guessing about run or pass….but it obvious that Alex is best out of the shotgun, and if youve decided to just pass the ball heavily then why not just put Alex in his best position to make something happen?

The offensive line just isnt going to make the run heavy offense that Raye originally wanted possible, and its obvious hes making adjustments. I just dont get what hes trying to do sometimes…hes so predictable, and stubborn with his playcalling. I dont see him being replaced in the offseason either, so it worries me that he might be the OC for a while .

by Beatclash on Nov 1, 2009 1:56 PM PST reply actions

On one sack he completing got flustered, watched the defense line and didn’t bother to look down field. I think that’s the play he tried to scramble and Freeney got him from behind. He looked panicked on that one play so I think that is why the play calling went back to the drop back passes cause Alex wouldn’t look at the pass rush.

by bignerd on Nov 1, 2009 2:05 PM PST up reply actions

by danknerd49 on Nov 1, 2009 2:09 PM PST up reply actions

The Mathis sack was out of shotgun

And he just used his speed to beat Snyder to get the sack in 2 seconds. That is not Alex’s fault. Thats SNyder getting beat on a play and mathis being a good passrusher.

The Freeney sack wasnt on a shotgun play if i remember right. But either way it was a coverage sack. Alex was in the pocket and got jumpy after he didnt find anyone open. The Colts earned that sack.

Alex was NOT jumpy like people say he was today. Alex can run and he knows that. Just because hes moving out of the pocket trying to extent plays doesnt mean hes getting happy feet. Ive always thought Alex plays best when in open space. Its when hes throwing in the pocket that he makes overthrows.

by Beatclash on Nov 1, 2009 2:12 PM PST up reply actions

He had happy feet on that one play. Sam Ryan yelling how no one was open on the Freeney sack yet they are showing the replay and both Bruce is open deep and Crabtree is open for 15 yard out. Alex stood in the pocket for half second and just got antsy.

Honestly we did better than I though we would.

I didn’t watch the game nor follow it here or anywhere having a huge work deadline to meet., so I quite possibly have a misguided viewpoint. Despite what we want and wanted to say before we are a young team. I mean look at it. We have a young team that needs some seasoning. Our D is good, darn good, but it is young. We have a guy (Crabtree) that’s in his second game, not second year, not second half of the season, second game. We have a QB that is playing in his second game this year with only spurious work with bad coaches in prior years, but he is showing some seasoning I feel (again maybe false hope and misguided). I think you get the idea without me running thru a litany of things. Yes we would have loved to have won but we didn’t and this was against the Colts. I mean look at the smackdown that the Colts have been giving to other teams (including and of note, in our division): 31-10 Cards, 34-17 Hawks, 42-6 Rams, 31-9 Titans. And we lost to them by 4 points. Did I want a loss? Did the 9ers want a loss? Did any of you want a loss? Heck no! But we can see some valuable things in this game I feel.

Now you guys tell me how stupid I am for feeling that way. :-)

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Nov 1, 2009 2:10 PM PST up reply actions

Absolutely...

I did noit watch the game either, but honestly, all Niners flans should be pleased. We finally have all the offense weapons we have lacked in the past 7 years and the O-Line will be much improved over the off season. The D is really young and still solid. There is no way we are going to win the super bowl this year anyway and if we make it to the playoffs we might make it out of the first round if we are lucky. If we are 9 – 7 or 8 – 8 this year that has to be a good sign. Alex Smith is for real and we has a an O-Line next year he will light it up. Patience is virtue. GO NINERS!

I didn't see the game but I read play-by-play.

We lost but it seemed close.

I can’t believe in the attitude of so many 49ers fans here, first of all many of you expected the Colts to win, and the rest of the NFL expected a blowout. But look what we got.

Now look at the remaining games, I’m sure you would predict even better performance against the rest of the teams. After this game I feel better how the team is overall than before this game.

Plus we played in Indianapolis so it doesn’t completely mean that we couldn’t hang with them in this game. Atleast some of the mistakes in the game based on what I am reading here are avoidable like some stupid penalties.

Let’s raise our heads up

by fortyniners on Nov 1, 2009 2:36 PM PST reply actions

But the frustration comes with how the team has lost the last two games. Mental errors, punt returns beat us again. Than the crowd saying we needed to pass more when the team mostly passed all game is frustrating.

Great young players,49ers are in a rebuilding year

Several points:

1) The 49ers have great young players: I would not trade PWilly, Vernon Davis, or Crabtree for any other linebacker, tight end or reciever in the NFL. That is just scratching the surface. There are many others, all young. The pass rush and secondary (and linebackers) were all great today, and that was without Clements, who is too far along in his career to be key to figure in our future pass defense plans.

2) Alex Smith looked excellent again. He was constantly pressured. There are many plays (play action) that he is very good at that they cannot even call against a team like the colts because their pass rush is too dangerous.

3) Considering the injury to Staley the Oline did better than expected, but

4) we are in the last year of a rebuilding cycle due to the profound weakness of the Oline, which is not adequate to protect an NFL quarterback or run a normal offense

5) with 2 1st round draft peaks next year, outstanding young skill players (Smith, VD, Crabtree, Gore, maybe Josh Morgan), and a very well-defined weakness (the offensive line) the 49ers are well positioned to finish their rebuilding and become real contenders next year.

6) considering the protection he gets, Alex Smith looks like an excellent QB !

The thing that worries me about VD is he’s going out soon on his contract. we’ve only got him signed thru 2011 but that may just be me being pessimistic. If Staley comes back I think things could bode well for us going forward. I think that Sando from ESPN sums it up well: http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/8084/wrap-up-colts-18-49ers-14
